When You Have Been Wronged
Betrayal and injustice. Nothing is lost with Allah, and your prayer has no veil.
By Mike Rashid King • Allah's Humble Servant
(If you are in danger)
If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.
A word first
Someone hurt you, and they had no right to. A partner who betrayed you. A boss who cheated you. Family who lied about you. A system that ground you down. And maybe they are doing fine. That is often the part that burns most.
If you are in danger from someone, get safe first. Call the police or your local emergency number. Allah commands justice (An-Nahl 16:90), and seeking it is no failure of patience.
What follows is for the heart: what Allah says to the wronged, what the Prophet ﷺ lived, and how to carry this without letting it carry you.

Nothing is lost
Never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only gives them time until a Day when eyes will stare in horror.
Never think it. Not once. The delay you see is not neglect. Every account is still open.
Your prayer has no veil
Ibn 'Abbas reported that when the Prophet ﷺ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he told him: beware the prayer of the wronged, for there is no veil between it and Allah.
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: three prayers are not turned back. The fasting man until he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the prayer of the wronged. Allah raises it above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven for it, and the Lord says:
وَعِزَّتِي لأَنْصُرَنَّكَ وَلَوْ بَعْدَ حِينٍ
Wa 'izzati la-ansurannaka wa law ba'da hin
By My might, I will surely help you, even if after a while.
Even if after a while. Your prayer went straight up. The answer comes on His schedule, not yours.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2448 · Jami at-Tirmidhi 3598 · Hasan (Darussalam)
Injustice is darkness
Ibn 'Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: injustice will be darkness upon darkness on the Day of Resurrection.
Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah says: O My servants, I have forbidden injustice for Myself, and I have made it forbidden among you, so do not wrong one another.
Injustice is the one thing Allah has forbidden to Himself. What was done to you will never be done by Him. Not one atom of it will go unweighed.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2447 · Sahih Muslim 2577a

What to do with the anger
The repayment of a wrong is a wrong like it. But whoever pardons and puts things right, his reward is with Allah. He does not love the wrongdoers.
Allah lays out both roads. Justice, measured exactly, never more. Or pardon, with the reward on Allah Himself. Pardon is not forced on you. It is offered, with a reward no one else can pay.
Wa laman sabara wa ghafara inna dhalika la-min 'azmil-umur
And whoever is patient and forgives, that is of the matters of firm resolve.
Firm resolve. Forgiveness is not the weak option. It is the strongest thing a wounded man can do.
The strong man
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: the strong man is not the one who throws others down. The strong man is the one who controls himself when he is angry.
Pardon raises you
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah does not increase a servant for pardoning except in honor.
You fear that letting it go makes you smaller. Allah promised the opposite.
He chose their future
'A'ishah asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he had ever had a day harder than the day of Uhud. He told her of the day he presented himself to Ibn 'Abd Yalil ibn 'Abd Kulal, who would not answer him. He walked away overwhelmed with grief and did not come to himself until he reached Qarn ath-Tha'alib. He looked up and saw a cloud shading him, and Jibril ʿalayhi as-salām in it. Jibril told him Allah had heard what his people said to him, and had sent the angel of the mountains to do whatever he commanded. The angel greeted him and said: if you wish, I will bring the two mountains together over them. The Prophet ﷺ said: rather, I hope that Allah will bring out from their descendants people who worship Allah alone, with no partner.
Wronged, rejected and grieving, with the power to end them in his hand, he chose their future. That is the strongest man who ever lived.
The good deed and the bad are not equal. Repel evil with what is better, and the one between you and whom there was enmity will be as though he were a close friend.

What to say
Allah is enough for us
Ibn 'Abbas said: Allah is enough for us, and He is the best One to trust in. Ibrahim ʿalayhi as-salām said it when he was thrown into the fire, and Muhammad ﷺ said it when people told him: the people have gathered against you, so fear them.
Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil
Allah is enough for us, and He is the best One to trust in.
Allah made the fire cool and safe for Ibrahim ʿalayhi as-salām (Al-Anbiya 21:69). And the believers who said it came back with favor from Allah, untouched by harm (Aal Imran 3:174).
✦
What to do
- Get safe. If someone is hurting you, leave and call for help. Patience never means staying in danger.
- Seek your right through the proper means: the law, an elder, a fair arbitrator.
- Take your complaint to Allah first. Your prayer has no veil.
- Say Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil when the anger rises.
- Do not let the wrong make you a wrongdoer. Hold yourself in anger. Do not lie about them, even if they lied about you.
- Pardon when you are ready, if you can. Not to excuse them. To set yourself free, for a reward that sits with Allah.
- If what was done to you still rules your sleep, your trust or your body, talk to a counselor. That wound is real, and treating it is a means Allah allowed.
Never think that Allah is unaware. He is not. Put it down. He is holding it.
