When You Feel Far from Allah
Sin, numbness and the feeling that the door has closed. It has not.
By Mike Rashid King • Allah's Humble Servant
(If you are in danger)
If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.
A word first
This pain leaves no bruise. You pray and feel nothing. Or you stopped praying. Or there is a sin you keep going back to. Every time you tell yourself you are finished with it, and every time you are not. Underneath it all runs a quiet voice: Allah is done with you.
That voice is lying. I want to show you, from the Quran and the Sunnah, exactly how it lies.
If you have drifted so far that you feel you must start from the beginning, I wrote Come Back for you. Start there, or start here.

What Allah says
Qul ya 'ibadiyal-ladhina asrafu 'ala anfusihim la taqnatu min rahmatillah, innallaha yaghfirudh-dhunuba jami'a, innahu huwal-ghafurur-rahim
Say: O My servants who have gone too far against yourselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Allah forgives all sins. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Read who He is speaking to. Not the righteous. Those who went too far against themselves. And look at what He calls them: My servants. Even there, at their lowest, He calls them His.
When My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls on Me. So let them answer Me and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.
In many places in the Quran, when the people ask the Prophet ﷺ about something, the answer begins with one word: say. Here it does not. Allah answers Himself. I am near.

What the Prophet ﷺ taught
Allah comes running
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah says, I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length. If he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him the length of two outstretched arms. And if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.
I am as My servant thinks of Me. If you think He is done with you, you are thinking wrongly of the Most Merciful. Think well of Him. Take one step. He promised more than one in return.
The man and his camel
Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than one of you would be whose camel, carrying his food and drink, ran off in a waterless desert. He gave up hope, lay down in the shade of a tree, and then found the camel standing beside him. He took hold of its reins and, from the force of his joy, said: O Allah, You are my servant and I am Your lord. He misspoke from the force of his joy.
That is how Allah receives you when you come back. Not with a ledger. With joy.
If you did not sin
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: by the One in whose hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would take you away and bring a people who sin and then ask Allah's forgiveness, and He would forgive them.
You were never expected to be without sin. You were expected to come back. The coming back is the worship.
Again, and again
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said of his Lord: a servant committed a sin and said, O Allah, forgive me my sin. Allah said: My servant sinned, and he knew that he has a Lord who forgives sin and holds to account for it. Then he sinned again and asked again, and Allah said the same. Then again, and Allah said: do as you wish, I have forgiven you.
That is not permission to sin. It is the answer to the man who thinks he has asked too many times. You have not. Keep asking, and mean it each time.
An earth full of sins
Abu Dharr reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah says: whoever meets Me with sins nearly filling the earth, without associating anything with Me, I will meet him with forgiveness the same size.
✦
What to say
The master of asking forgiveness
Shaddad ibn Aws reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: the master of asking forgiveness is to say:
O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep Your covenant and Your promise as far as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor on me, and I acknowledge my sin. So forgive me, for no one forgives sins but You.
He said that whoever says it in the day with certainty and dies before evening is among the people of Paradise, and whoever says it at night with certainty and dies before morning is among the people of Paradise.
Look at the order. Who He is. Who you are. What He gave. What you did. Then the request. A man honest about both sides of that ledger is already on his way back.
Leave the cover in place
Abu Hurayrah reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: all of my nation will be pardoned except those who expose themselves. Among that is a man who does something at night, and Allah covers it for him, and in the morning he says: so-and-so, last night I did such and such. His Lord covered him through the night, and in the morning he pulls off the cover of Allah.
Name the sin to Allah, in private. Allah covered it. Leave it covered, and take it to the One who forgives.
✦
What to do
- Pray the next prayer. Not every prayer you missed. The next one. Start there. The steps are in Pray.
- Say the master of asking forgiveness once in the morning and once at night.
- Change one thing around the sin you keep returning to. The phone, the friend, the route home, the hour. A sin usually has a door. Close the door.
- Sit with people who remember Allah. The masjid, a study circle, a brother whose faith is stronger than yours right now.
- Read one page of the Quran a day, even when you feel nothing. In my own life the feeling came back after the practice, rarely before it.
- Think well of Allah. That is not a feeling to wait for. It is a choice. He said: I am as My servant thinks of Me.
You felt far. He said: I am near. Believe Him over the feeling.
