When Worry Will Not Let You Rest
The mind that will not stop, the chest that is tight, and the words the Prophet ﷺ said in distress.
By Mike Rashid King • Allah's Humble Servant
(If you are in danger)
If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.
A word first
Worry is pain you carry ahead of time. The bill not yet due. The result not yet back. The conversation not yet had. The mind plays the worst version on a loop, the chest tightens, and sleep does not come.
The Prophet ﷺ knew this. He asked Allah for refuge from it by name. That tells you two things. Worry is real. And there is a door out of it.
If your worry has turned into panic, or has lasted for months, or has taken your sleep and your appetite, see a doctor. Anxiety can be treated, and seeking treatment is part of the Sunnah. What follows is the rest of the cure.

What Allah says
Alladhina amanu wa tatma'innu qulubuhum bi-dhikrillah, ala bi-dhikrillahi tatma'innul-qulub
Those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.
Tatma'innu. The heart settles, the way water settles when you stop shaking the glass. Allah did not say hearts find rest once every problem is solved. He said in the remembrance of Him. The problem may still be there in the morning. The heart can be at rest anyway.
La yukallifullahu nafsan illa wus'aha
Allah does not place on a soul more than it can bear.
If it is on you, you can carry it. Not because you are strong. Because He measured it before He placed it.
We know that your chest is tightened by what they say.
Fa-sabbih bi-hamdi rabbika wa kun minas-sajidin
So glorify the praise of your Lord, and be among those who prostrate.
Allah said this to His Prophet ﷺ. Your chest is tight. We know. Then He gave the prescription: praise, and prostration. When your chest is tight, put your forehead on the ground.

What he said in distress
The words of distress
Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say at a time of distress:
لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ، وَرَبُّ الأَرْضِ، وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ
La ilaha illallahul-'Azimul-Halim. La ilaha illallahu rabbul-'arshil-'azim. La ilaha illallahu rabbus-samawati wa rabbul-ardi wa rabbul-'arshil-karim
There is no god but Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the noble Throne.
There is no request in it. No list of problems. Only Allah, named and named again: the size of Him set beside the size of what you fear. Your problem is real. It is also under the Throne.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6346 · Sahih Muslim 2730a
Refuge from worry and grief
Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to say:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, from the weight of debt and from being overpowered by men.
Al-hamm is worry over what is coming. Al-hazan is grief over what has passed. Between them sits the present, the only place you can act. The rest of the supplication names what worry becomes when it is left alone: helplessness, laziness, fear. Ask for refuge from the whole chain.
The call from inside the whale
Yunus ʿalayhi as-salām called out in the darkness, from the belly of the whale (Al-Anbiya 21:87):
لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin
There is no god but You. Glory be to You. I have been one of the wrongdoers.
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: no Muslim calls with it for anything, ever, except that Allah answers him.
And Allah said: so We answered him and saved him from the distress, and so We save the believers (Al-Anbiya 21:88). And so We save the believers. That line is about you.
Jami at-Tirmidhi 3505 · Sahih (Darussalam)
Allah, Allah is my Lord
Asma' bint 'Umays reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her: shall I not teach you words to say in distress?
Allahu, Allahu rabbi, la ushriku bihi shay'a
Allah, Allah is my Lord. I associate nothing with Him.
Short enough to say in a panic. In a waiting room, in traffic, in the dark at three in the morning.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1525 · Sahih (Al-Albani)
Do not leave me to myself
Abu Bakrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: the supplications of the one in distress are:
اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلاَ تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ
Allahumma rahmataka arju, fa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn, wa aslih li sha'ni kullah, la ilaha illa ant
O Allah, it is Your mercy I hope for. Do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye, and set right all my affairs. There is no god but You.
Do not leave me to myself. That is the fear under most worry: that it is all on me. It is not. Ask Him not to leave it on you.
Sunan Abi Dawud 5090 · Hasan in chain (Al-Albani)

How the believer is built
Good in every affair
Suhayb reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: how wonderful is the affair of the believer. All of it is good, and that is so for no one but the believer. If something good reaches him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If harm reaches him, he is patient, and that is good for him.
Worry asks: what if it goes wrong? The believer has his answer ready. If it goes right, I will be grateful. If it goes wrong, I will be patient. Both roads are good for me. There is no third road to fear.
The pages have dried
Ibn 'Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ told him, when he was a boy: know that if the whole nation gathered to benefit you with something, they could benefit you only with what Allah had already written for you. And if they gathered to harm you with something, they could harm you only with what Allah had already written against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.
Much of worry is an attempt to control what was settled before you were born. Do your part. The pages are dry.

What to do
- Name the worry. Write it down in one sentence. A fear with a name is smaller than a fear in the dark.
- Split it in two: what you can do today, and what you cannot. Do the first. Hand the second to Allah with the words of distress.
- Pray two rak'ahs and stay in sujud longer than usual. Your chest is tight. Put your forehead on the ground.
- When you lie down and the loop starts, say the words of Yunus ʿalayhi as-salām.
- Walk. Eat. Sleep at night. A tired body makes a loud mind, and the body is a trust you were given.
- Keep the morning and evening remembrance. A heart at rest is built every day, not in the emergency.
- If the worry is constant, or it comes as panic, see a doctor or a counselor. Seeking treatment is part of the Sunnah (Sunan Abi Dawud 3855).
Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest. Say His name now, slowly, and let the glass settle.
