When You Lose Someone
Grief, and the tears of the Prophet ﷺ. Permission to weep, and words for the first blow.
By Mike Rashid King • Allah's Humble Servant
(If you are in danger)
If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.
A word first
If you have lost someone, I am sorry. A parent, a child, a wife, a husband, a brother, a friend. No words put them back, and I will not pretend these do.
What I can give you is what Allah said to the grieving, and what the Prophet ﷺ did when he grieved. He grieved often. He buried his wife Khadijah. He buried his uncle Abu Talib. He buried every one of his children except Fatimah. He knows the road you are on. He walked it first.
Grief is love with nowhere to go. It is not weakness, and it is not a lack of faith.

The tears of the Prophet ﷺ
He wept
Anas ibn Malik reported: we went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the house of Abu Sayf, where his son Ibrahim was breathing his last. The eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to flow with tears. 'Abd ar-Rahman ibn 'Awf said: even you, Messenger of Allah? He said: Ibn 'Awf, this is mercy. Then he wept more, and said:
The eye weeps and the heart grieves, and we say only what pleases our Lord. And at your parting, O Ibrahim, we are grieved.
Hold all three together. The eye weeps. The heart grieves. The tongue stays with what pleases Allah. That is the whole of grief, done right. Your tears are not a failure of faith. He ﷺ called them mercy.
A mercy placed in the heart
Usamah ibn Zayd reported that a daughter of the Prophet ﷺ sent for him, saying her son was dying. He sent back his greeting and this message:
إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا أَخَذَ وَلَهُ مَا أَعْطَى وَكُلٌّ عِنْدَهُ بِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى، فَلْتَصْبِرْ وَلْتَحْتَسِبْ
Inna lillahi ma akhadha wa lahu ma a'ta, wa kullun 'indahu bi-ajalin musamma, fal-tasbir wal-tahtasib
To Allah belongs what He took, and to Him belongs what He gave, and everything with Him has a term already set. So let her be patient and look to Allah for the reward.
She sent again and asked him by oath to come, and he went. The child was lifted to him with his breath rattling, and the Prophet's ﷺ eyes overflowed. Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah asked: Messenger of Allah, what is this? He said: this is a mercy that Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and Allah is merciful only to those of His servants who are merciful.
He gave her the words first. Then he went, and he wept with her. Words and presence. If you are the one sitting with the grieving, give both.

What Allah says
Allah told us loss would come. He named it before it arrived, so it would not find us thinking we had been forgotten.
Wa la-nabluwannakum bi-shay'in minal-khawfi wal-ju'i wa naqsin minal-amwali wal-anfusi wath-thamarat, wa bashshiris-sabirin
We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and fruits. And give good news to the patient,
Alladhina idha asabat-hum musibatun qalu inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un
those who, when a calamity strikes them, say: we belong to Allah, and to Him we return.
Ula'ika 'alayhim salawatun min rabbihim wa rahmah, wa ula'ika humul-muhtadun
Those are the ones on whom are blessings from their Lord, and mercy. And they are the rightly guided.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. We belong to Allah, and to Him we return. It is more than a phrase for funerals. It is a map. The one you lost belonged to Allah. So do you. And the road you are on ends where theirs went.
Then Ya'qub ʿalayhi as-salām. He lost Yusuf for years. His eyes went white from grief (Yusuf 12:84). When his sons told him he would waste away remembering, he said:
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
Qala innama ashku baththi wa huzni ilallah, wa a'lamu minallahi ma la ta'lamun
He said: I complain of my anguish and my grief only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.
Ya'qub ʿalayhi as-salām did not hide his grief. He took it to the right door. And in the next breath he told his sons: do not despair of the relief of Allah (Yusuf 12:87). Grief and hope sat in the same man at the same time. They can sit in you.

What to say
The words of Umm Salamah
Umm Salamah reported that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: there is no Muslim struck by a calamity who says what Allah commanded, we belong to Allah and to Him we return, O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me better than it in its place, except that Allah gives him better than it.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma'jurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha
We belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me better than it in its place.
When her husband Abu Salamah died, she thought: which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah? She said the words anyway. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself asked for her hand in marriage.
She said them before she believed them. You can too. The words do not wait for the feeling.
Patience is at the first blow
Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ passed a woman weeping at a grave and told her: fear Allah and be patient. She did not recognize him and said: leave me, you have not been struck by what struck me. Later she was told who he was, and she went to his door to apologize. He said: patience is at the first blow.
He did not scold her a second time. He told her where patience lives: in the moment the news lands. And the news lands again. On the birthday, at the empty chair, at the smell of their clothes. Each of those is a first blow. Meet each one with the words.
✦
What you can still do for them
Their record is still open
Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: when a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: a charity that keeps running, knowledge that benefits, or a righteous child who prays for him.
'A'ishah reported that a man told the Prophet ﷺ: my mother died suddenly, and I think that if she could have spoken, she would have given charity. May I give charity on her behalf? He said: yes, give charity on her behalf.
Your love has somewhere to go. Pray for them by name. Give in their name. Build something that keeps giving: a well, a copy of the Quran, a class, a kindness that outlives you both.
Sahih Muslim 1631 · Sahih al-Bukhari 2760
Feed the grieving
'Abdullah ibn Ja'far reported that when news came of his father's death, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: prepare food for the family of Ja'far, for something has come upon them that occupies them.
Grieving people forget to eat. The Sunnah is to feed them. If you are the one in grief, let people bring the food. Let them sit with you. Grief isolates. Do not let it.

What to do
- Weep. He ﷺ wept. Let the tears come and keep your tongue with what pleases Allah.
- Say the words of Umm Salamah, even before you mean them.
- Pray for the one you lost, by name, in your sujud.
- Give charity in their name, however small.
- Let people sit with you, and eat what they bring.
- Read Shifā: Seven Verses for the Wounded Heart slowly, one verse a day.
- If months pass and you still cannot sleep, eat or work, talk to a doctor or a grief counselor. Seeking treatment is part of the Sunnah, and it honors the one you lost to keep living well.
The eye weeps. The heart grieves. And we say only what pleases our Lord. Then we keep walking, toward the place they went.
