(If you are in danger)

If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.

A word first

Money pain sits on a man's chest because it touches everything he is meant to carry. The rent. The children. His wife. His parents. His name. A short month starts to feel like a verdict on who he is.

It is not a verdict. It is a test, and Allah named it before it came: loss of wealth sits in the same verse as fear, hunger and the loss of lives (Al-Baqarah 2:155). It visited prophets and companions. Now it is visiting you.

Here is what Allah says about provision, what the Prophet ﷺ taught about debt and work, the words to say, and what to do this week.

✦

Who provides

There is no creature on the earth but that its provision rests with Allah. He knows where it lives and where it is laid to rest. All of it is in a clear record.

Hud 11:6

It rests with Allah. He took the provision of every creature on Himself. The bird, the ant, your children. You are a means of their provision, not its source. That takes a weight off your back, and it sends you out to work.

Wa man yattaqillaha yaj'al lahu makhraja, wa yarzuqhu min haythu la yahtasib, wa man yatawakkal 'alallahi fa-huwa hasbuh, innallaha balighu amrih, qad ja'alallahu li-kulli shay'in qadra

Whoever is mindful of Allah, He makes a way out for him, and provides for him from where he does not expect. Whoever puts his trust in Allah, He is enough for him. Allah carries out His command. Allah has set a measure for everything.

At-Talaq 65:2 to 3

A way out, and provision from where you were not looking. The condition is taqwa, mindfulness of Allah. In money that means taking the halal road when the haram one is quicker. The way out comes through that door.

Shaytan threatens you with poverty and orders you to indecency, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.

Al-Baqarah 2:268

The fear of poverty has an author. It is the voice that says: cut the corner, skip the charity, sign anything, there is no other way. Allah promises the opposite. Know which voice you are hearing.

Sa-yaj'alullahu ba'da 'usrin yusra

Allah will bring ease after hardship.

At-Talaq 65:7, its close

That verse speaks of the man whose provision has been made tight. It ends with a promise.

What the Prophet ﷺ taught

The bird goes out

'Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: if you relied on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out in the morning hungry and come back in the evening full.

The bird goes out. It does not sit in the nest and wait. Trust is in the heart. Going out is in the wings. Both are in the hadith.

Jami at-Tirmidhi 2344 · Hasan (Darussalam)

The work of your own hands

Al-Miqdam reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: no one has ever eaten better food than what he ate from the work of his own hands, and the Prophet of Allah Dawud ʿalayhi as-salām ate from the work of his own hands.

A prophet and a king worked with his hands. No honest work is beneath you. The job that feels small this month is better food than any easy money.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2072

Whoever seeks to be free of need

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that some of the Ansar asked the Prophet ﷺ and he gave them, then they asked again and he gave again, until what he had ran out. Then he said: whatever good I have, I will not hold it back from you. Whoever keeps himself from asking, Allah keeps him chaste. Whoever seeks to be free of need, Allah makes him free of need. Whoever strives to be patient, Allah makes him patient. And no one has been given a gift better or wider than patience.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1469

He sought refuge from debt

'A'ishah reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge in his prayer from sin and from debt. Someone said: how often you seek refuge from debt! He said: when a man falls into debt, he speaks and lies, and he promises and breaks his promise.

He knew what debt does to a man's word. If you are in debt, guard your word harder than ever. Tell the people you owe the truth. Promise only what you can keep.

Sahih al-Bukhari 832

Look at the one below you

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: when one of you looks at someone who has been given more than him in wealth and in form, let him look at someone below him.

Comparison is a thief. The screen in your hand shows you the man above you all day long. The hadith turns your head the other way.

Sahih Muslim 2963a

Wealth is in the soul

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: wealth is not having many possessions. Wealth is the richness of the soul.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6446

Charity does not shrink wealth

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: charity does not decrease wealth.

When money is tight, the instinct is to stop giving. Give something anyway. Small, steady and sincere. It is a statement of whom you trust.

Sahih Muslim 2588

What to say

Make the halal enough

A man came to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib who could not pay what he owed for his freedom, and asked for help. 'Ali said: shall I not teach you words the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me? If you had a debt the size of a mountain, Allah would pay it for you. Say:

Allahummak-fini bi-halalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bi-fadlika 'amman siwak

O Allah, make what You have made lawful enough for me, so that I need nothing You have forbidden, and by Your bounty make me free of need for anyone but You.

Jami at-Tirmidhi 3563 · Hasan (Darussalam)

Refuge from the weight of debt

The supplication of refuge the Prophet ﷺ used to say ends with the weight of debt and being overpowered by men. Say it in the morning and the evening. Its full text is on When Worry Will Not Let You Rest.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6369

Count what remains

Wa idh ta'adhdhana rabbukum la'in shakartum la-azidannakum, wa la'in kafartum inna 'adhabi la-shadid

And when your Lord proclaimed: if you are grateful, I will surely give you more. But if you are ungrateful, My punishment is severe.

Count what you still have, out loud. A roof. A body that works. People who love you. Gratitude is not pretending the month is fine. It is refusing to let the shortage be the only thing you see.

Ibrahim 14:7

What to do this week

  1. Write it all down. Every debt, every bill, every due date. Fear grows in the dark. A list is a plan waiting to happen.
  2. Call the people you owe before they call you. Tell the truth. Ask for time. Debt pulls a man toward broken promises. Break that pull with honesty.
  3. Stay clear of interest. Allah permitted trade and forbade riba plainly (Al-Baqarah 2:275). Do not trade His promise of a way out for a quick loan.
  4. Take the work in front of you, even if it is beneath what you had. Dawud ʿalayhi as-salām ate from the work of his hands.
  5. Give something in charity, however small.
  6. If you cannot feed your family, tell your masjid or someone you trust. Allah named the poor, the needy and those in debt among those zakat is for (At-Tawbah 9:60). It was made for this.
  7. Say the words 'Ali taught every morning and every evening.

The bird goes out hungry and comes back full. Go out. Trust Him. And let Allah be the One who fills you.
