When You Are Alone

Loneliness, and the One who is nearer than your own neck vein.

(If you are in danger)

If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.

A word first

Loneliness is not the same as being by yourself. A man can be lonely in a full house. In a marriage. In a masjid on Friday. It is the feeling that no one sees you, and that no one would notice if you were gone.

If that last thought is getting heavy, stop here and call someone. The numbers are at the top of this page. Then come back.

What I want to give you is the truth this feeling hides. You are seen. You are heard. And you were made for people, so loneliness is not your permanent address.

He is near

We created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.

Qaf 50:16

He knows what your soul whispers. The thoughts you have never said to anyone. He is closer than the vein in your neck. There is no distance for loneliness to live in.

He said: do not be afraid. I am with you both. I hear and I see.

Ta Ha 20:46

Allah said this to Musa ʿalayhi as-salām and his brother Harun ʿalayhi as-salām as He sent them to Pharaoh, the most dangerous man on earth. I hear and I see. That is the answer to the thought that no one sees you.

When he said to his companion: do not grieve, Allah is with us.

At-Tawbah 9:40, a part

The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr in the cave, hunted, with the searchers outside. Abu Bakr said: if one of them looked down at his feet, he would see us. The Prophet ﷺ said: Abu Bakr, what do you think of two whose third is Allah? (Sahih al-Bukhari 3653).

Ma wadda'aka rabbuka wa ma qala

Your Lord has not left you, and He has not turned against you.

Ad-Duha 93:3

Jundub ibn Sufyan reported that the Prophet ﷺ fell ill and did not rise for the night prayer for two or three nights. A woman came and mocked him: I think your companion has left you. Then Allah sent down this surah (Sahih al-Bukhari 4950). If He said it to His Messenger ﷺ in that season, take it for yours. Your Lord has not left you.

You were made for people

One body

An-Nu'man ibn Bashir reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: you see the believers, in their mercy, love and kindness to one another, like one body. When one part of it hurts, the whole body answers it with sleeplessness and fever.

That is how it was meant to be. If you are hurting and no one answers, part of the body has gone numb. That is not the design, and it is not your shame. Go and find the rest of the body.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6011

Remembered in a better gathering

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah says, I am with My servant when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me to himself, I remember him to Myself. If he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it.

You, alone in your room at night, saying His name. And your name mentioned in the highest gathering there is. A lonely man is not a forgotten man.

Sahih Muslim 2675

Go to the house of Allah

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: no people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it together, except that tranquility descends on them, mercy covers them, the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them among those with Him. And Allah helps the servant as long as the servant helps his brother.

Two doors out of loneliness are in that hadith. Go to the masjid. And help someone.

Sahih Muslim 2699a

Meet a need

'Abdullah ibn 'Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: whoever sees to the need of his brother, Allah sees to his need. Whoever relieves a Muslim of a hardship, Allah relieves him of one of the hardships of the Day of Resurrection.

Loneliness turns a man inward. Service turns him out. Find someone whose need you can meet this week. A visit to the sick. A meal for a widow. A call to the old man at the masjid. Often you will find the loneliness was on both sides.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2442

What to say

The prayer of Zakariyya

Zakariyya ʿalayhi as-salām was old, and he had no child. He called to his Lord:

وَزَكَرِيَّآ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِى فَرْدًۭا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ

Wa Zakariyya idh nada rabbahu rabbi la tadharni fardan wa anta khayrul-warithin

And Zakariyya, when he called to his Lord: my Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors.

The next verse begins: so We answered him. He was given Yahya ʿalayhi as-salām. Ask Allah for company. For a wife, a child, a brother, a friend. It is a prophet's prayer, and there is no shame in it.

Al-Anbiya 21:89 · Al-Anbiya 21:90

✦

What to do

  1. Pray at the masjid, at least one prayer a day. Arrive early. Stay after. Give salam to the man beside you.
  2. Call one person today. Not a message. A voice.
  3. Visit someone who is sick or old. Allah said you would find Him with them (Sahih Muslim 2569).
  4. Talk to Allah out loud when you are alone. He hears and He sees.
  5. Ask for company with the prayer of Zakariyya ʿalayhi as-salām.
  6. Put the screen down at night. Other people's lives on a feed are not company.
  7. If loneliness has become a weight you cannot lift, talk to a doctor or a counselor. That is a means, and the means are from Allah.

We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. Put two fingers on your neck. Feel the pulse. He is nearer than that.
