Illness, injury and pain that will not leave. What the pain is doing, and what to say over it.

(If you are in danger)

If you are thinking of ending your life, or you are in danger now, call your local emergency number. In the United States, call or text 988. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, call the Samaritans on 116 123. You are not a burden, and asking for help is part of the cure.

A word first

If you are reading this in pain, read slowly. Or press Listen and close your eyes. You do not have to finish the page. Take what you need and leave the rest for another day.

Pain shrinks the world. The room gets small. The day gets short. Everything you meant to do waits behind the one thing you feel. Most men end up in that room sooner or later. I have been in it.

Nothing here replaces your doctor. The Prophet ﷺ told the sick to seek treatment, and you will find his words below. This page gives the other half of the cure: what Allah says about your pain, what the Prophet ﷺ did with his own, and the words to say over the place that hurts.

The One who heals

Ibrahim ʿalayhi as-salām described his Lord to his people. He named the One who created him, guided him, fed him and gave him drink. Then he said:

Wa idha maridtu fa-huwa yashfin

And when I am ill, it is He who heals me.

Ash-Shu'ara 26:80

Look at how he said it. I fall ill. He heals. Ibrahim ʿalayhi as-salām put the illness on himself and gave the healing to Allah. Courtesy with his Lord, even in sickness. The doctor and the medicine are means. The healing is His.

Then Ayyub ʿalayhi as-salām. He lost his health, his wealth and his children, and he stayed patient. When he finally called out, he did not complain about Allah. He complained to Him.

Wa Ayyuba idh nada rabbahu anni massaniyad-durru wa anta arhamur-rahimin

And Ayyub, when he called to his Lord: harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.

Al-Anbiya 21:83

Two sentences. A fact and a name. Harm has touched me. You are the Most Merciful. He did not tell Allah what to do. He told Allah what he felt and who He is. The next verse is the answer.

Fastajabna lahu fa-kashafna ma bihi min durr, wa ataynahu ahlahu wa mithlahum ma'ahum rahmatan min 'indina wa dhikra lil-'abidin

So We answered him and removed the harm that was on him, and We gave him back his family and as many again with them, a mercy from Us and a reminder for those who worship.

Al-Anbiya 21:84

A reminder for those who worship. The story was kept for you. You are allowed to say it hurts. Say it to Him.

What the pain is doing

Nothing is wasted

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: no fatigue, no illness, no worry, no grief, no harm and no distress reaches a Muslim, not even a thorn that pricks him, except that Allah wipes away some of his sins by it.

Not even a thorn. The smallest pain is counted. The long night in the hospital is counted. The ache you never mention is counted. Pain feels like waste. In the scale of Allah it is not waste.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5641 · Sahih al-Bukhari 5642

The leaves fall

'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud visited the Prophet ﷺ while he was burning with fever. He said: you have a severe fever. The Prophet ﷺ said: yes, I have the fever of two men among you. 'Abdullah asked: is that because you have a double reward? He said: yes. No Muslim is struck by harm, a thorn or anything greater, except that Allah drops his sins from him the way a tree drops its leaves.

The best of creation ran a fever twice as hot as ours. Pain is not a sign that Allah has turned from you. It visited him ﷺ more than anyone.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5648

Your good deeds keep running

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: when a servant falls ill or travels, the same reward is written for him as for what he used to do when he was healthy and at home.

If illness has taken your prayer in the masjid, your fasting, your work, your training, your service to others, the record keeps writing. You lost the strength. You did not lose the reward.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2996

He is with you in the sickbed

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: on the Day of Resurrection Allah will say, son of Adam, I was sick and you did not visit Me. He will say: my Lord, how could I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: did you not know that My servant so-and-so was sick, and you did not visit him? Did you not know that if you had visited him, you would have found Me with him?

You would have found Me with him. Read that from the bed. The sick room is not the place Allah left. It is the place He told us to look for Him.

Sahih Muslim 2569

The size of the reward

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: the size of the reward comes with the size of the trial, and when Allah loves a people He tests them. Whoever accepts it has acceptance, and whoever resents it has resentment.

Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas reported that a man asked: Messenger of Allah, who among people is tested most severely? He said: the prophets, then those most like them, then those most like them. A man is tested according to his religion. The trial stays with the servant until it leaves him walking on the earth with no sin on him.

That is the frame. I do not say it to make your pain small. I say it so your pain means something.

What to say over it

Your hand on the place that hurts

'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As complained to the Prophet ﷺ of a pain he had felt in his body since he became Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ told him: put your hand on the part of your body that hurts and say Bismillah three times. Then say seven times:

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir

I seek refuge in Allah and in His power from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.

What I feel, and what I fear. The pain now, and the dread of what it might become. Both handed over, seven times, with your own hand on the place.

Sahih Muslim 2202

The words he said over the sick

'A'ishah reported that when the Prophet ﷺ sought protection for one of his family, he passed his right hand over them and said:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَاسَ، اشْفِهِ وَأَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Allahumma rabban-nas, adhhibil-ba's, ishfihi wa antash-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama

O Allah, Lord of mankind, take away the harm. Heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.

Say it over the one you love who is sick, with your hand on them. Teach it to them, so they can say it over you.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5743

Seek the cure

Usamah ibn Sharik reported that the Bedouins asked: Messenger of Allah, should we seek treatment? He said: seek treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without making a cure for it, except one, old age.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down its cure.

Go to the doctor. Take the medicine. Do the therapy. Trust in Allah never meant refusing the means He made. I wrote about that balance in Tawakkul.

Sunan Abi Dawud 3855 · Sahih (Al-Albani) · Sahih al-Bukhari 5678

What to do

For the days when the pain is loud.

  1. See a doctor and tell them everything. Pain that is new, sharp or getting worse needs a professional today.
  2. Put your hand on the place. Say Bismillah three times, then A'udhu billahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir, seven times.
  3. Pray as you are able. The Prophet ﷺ told a man in pain: pray standing, and if you cannot, sitting, and if you cannot, on your side (Sahih al-Bukhari 1117). The steps of each prayer are in Pray.
  4. Listen to the Quran when you cannot read it. Allah calls it a healing and a mercy for the believers (Al-Isra 17:82). Shifā: Seven Verses for the Wounded Heart is a place to start.
  5. Let people visit you, and let them help. Allah is with the sick, and the visit is a door for both of you.
  6. Do not wish for death. The Prophet ﷺ forbade it: if you are doing good, you may add to it, and if you have done wrong, you may yet turn back (Sahih al-Bukhari 5673). If that wish is becoming a plan, call for help now. The numbers are at the top of this page.

Ayyub ʿalayhi as-salām said two sentences, and Allah answered him. Harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful. Say yours tonight.
