The Surah · In Two Parts
One hundred and twenty-three verses, read in two sittings. At-Tirmidhi records that Abu Bakr asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, what had turned his hair grey, and he answered that Hud and its sisters had. Read it and the reason is not hard to find. The surah runs one nation after another, each given a messenger, each refusing, each ending, and it does not soften any of it. But its final instruction, in verse 112, is not about them. It is a single word addressed to the man carrying the message, and it is the hardest thing in the chapter.
Part One He Built It While They Laughed. A man described in two moods, ruined by both. The blind and the deaf set beside the seeing and the hearing. A prophet who refused to look down on his own followers. A boat built in a desert under mockery. A son who thought a mountain would hold. And a promise attached to seeking forgiveness that most men never test. Remain Steadfast as You Were Commanded. A she-camel and three days, guests who did not eat, Shu'ayb on the scales and on a people's dealings, and the closing instruction that turned a man's hair grey.Verses 1 to 60
