Alif-Laaam-Raa; Kitaabun uhkimat Aayaatuhoo summa fussilat mil ladun Hakeemin Khabeer

Allaa ta'budooo illal laah; innanee lakum minhu nazeerunw wa basheer
that you worship none but Allah. I am to you from Him a warner and a bringer of good news,
Wa anis taghfiroo Rabbakum summa toobooo ilaihi yumatti'kum mataa'an hasanan ilaaa ajalim musammanw wa yu'ti kulla zee fadlin fadlahoo wa in tawallaw fa inneee akhaafu 'alaikum 'azaaba Yawmin Kabeer
and that you seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance. He will grant you good enjoyment for a stated term, and give every possessor of merit his merit. But if you turn away, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.
Ilal laahi marji'ukum wa Huwa 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer
To Allah is your return, and He has power over all things.
Alaa innahum yasnoona sudoorahum liyastakhfoo minh; alaa heena yastaghshoona siyaabahum ya'lamu maa yusiroona wa maa yu'linoon; innahoo 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor
They fold up their chests to hide from Him. When they cover themselves with their garments, He knows what they conceal and what they declare. He is Knowing of what is within the chests.
There is no creature on the earth but that its provision is upon Allah, and He knows its dwelling place and its place of storage. All of it is in a clear record.
Wa Huwal lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal alrda fee sittati aiyaaminw wa kaana 'Arshuhoo alal maaa'i liyablu wakum aiyukum ahsanu 'amalaa; wa la'in qulta innakum mab'oosoona mim ba'dil mawti la yaqoolanal lazeena kafaroo in haazaaa illaa sihrum mubeen
He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and His Throne was upon the water, so that He may test which of you is best in deed. And if you say, "You will be raised after death," those who disbelieve will say, "This is nothing but clear magic."
Wala'in akhkharnaa 'anhumul 'azaaba ilaaa ummatim ma'doodatil la yaqoolunna maa yahbisuh; alaa yawma yaateehim laisa masroofan 'anhum wa haaqa bihim maa kaanoo bihee yastahzi'oon
And if We delay the punishment from them for a counted period, they will say, "What holds it back?" On the Day it comes to them, it will not be turned away from them, and what they used to mock will surround them.
Wa la'in azaqnal insaana minnaa rahmatan summa naza'naahaa minhu, innahoo laya'oosun kafoor
And if We give the human being a taste of mercy from Us and then remove it from him, he is despairing and ungrateful.
Wala'in azaqnaahu na'maaa'a ba'da darraaa'a massat hu la yaqoolanna zahabas saiyiaatu 'anneee; innahoo lafarihun fakhoor
And if We give him a taste of ease after hardship has touched him, he says, "The evils have departed from me." He is exultant and boastful,
Illal lazeena sabaroo wa 'amilus saalihaati ulaaa'ika lahum maghfiratunw wa ajrun kabeer
except those who were patient and did righteous deeds. For them is forgiveness and a great reward.
Fala'allaka taarikum ba'da maa yoohaaa ilaika wa daaa'iqum bihee sadruka ai yaqooloo law laaa unzila 'alaihi kanzun aw jaaa'a ma'ahoo malak; innamaa anta nazeer; wallaahu 'alaa kulli shai'inw wakeel
Perhaps you would leave part of what is revealed to you, and your chest is tightened by it, because they say, "Why has a treasure not been sent down to him, or an angel come with him?" You are only a warner, and Allah is Guardian over all things.
Am yaqooloonaf taraahu qul faatoo bi'ashri Suwarim mislihee muftarayaatinw wad'oo manis tata'tum min doonil laahi in kuntum saadiqeen
Or do they say he invented it? Say, "Then bring ten invented surahs like it, and call upon whoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful."
Fa il lam yastajeeboo lakum fa'lamooo annamaaa unzilla bi'ilmil laahi wa al laaa ilaaha illaa Huwa fahal antum muslimoon
And if they do not respond to you, then know that it was sent down with the knowledge of Allah, and that there is no god but Him. Will you then be Muslims?
Man kaana yureedul hayaatad dunyaa zeenatahaa nuwaffi ilaihim a'maa lahum feehaa wa hum feehaa laa yubkhasoon
Whoever wants the life of this world and its adornment, We will pay them in full for their deeds in it, and they will not be diminished in it.
Those are the ones who will have nothing in the hereafter but the Fire. What they made in it has collapsed, and what they used to do is worthless.
Afaman kaana 'alas baiyinatim mir Rabbihee wa yatloohu shaahidum minhu wa min qablihee Kitaabu Moosaaa imaamanw wa rahmah; ulaaa 'ika yu'minoona bih; wa mai yakfur bihee minal Ahzaabi fan Naaru maw'iduh; falaa taku fee miryatim minh; innahul haqqu mir Rabbika wa laakinna aksaran naasi laa yu'minoon
Is one who stands on clear evidence from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it, and before it the Book of Musa as a guide and a mercy? Those believe in it. And whoever of the factions disbelieves in it, the Fire is his appointed place. So do not be in doubt about it. It is the truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe.
Wa man azlamu mimmanif taraa 'alal laahi kazibaa; ulaaa'ika yu'radoona 'alaa Rabbihim wa yaqoolul ashhaa duhaaa'ulaaa'il lazeena kazaboo 'alaa Rabbihim; alaa la'natul laahi alaz zaalimeen
And who does greater wrong than one who invents a lie about Allah? Those will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied about their Lord." The curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers,
Allazeena yasuddoona 'an sabeelil laahi wa yabghoonahaa 'iwajanw wa hum bil Aakhiratihum kaafiroon
those who turn others from the way of Allah and want it crooked, and who disbelieve in the hereafter.
Ulaaa'ika lam yakoonoo mu'jizeena fil ardi wa maa kaana lahum min doonil laahi min awliyaaa'; yudaa'afu lahumul 'azaab; maa kaanoo yastatee'oonas sam'a wa maa kaanoo yubsiroon
They could not escape on the earth, and they had no protectors besides Allah. The punishment will be doubled for them. They were not able to hear, and they were not seeing.
Ulaaa'ikal lazeena khasirooo anfusahum wa dalla 'anhum maa kaanoo yaftaroon
Those are the ones who lost themselves, and what they used to invent has been lost to them.
Laa jarama annahum fil Aakhirati humul akhsaroon
Without doubt, in the hereafter they are the greatest losers.
Innal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati wa akhbatooo ilaa Rabbihim ulaaa'ika Ashaabul Jannati hum feehaa khaalidoon
Those who believed and did righteous deeds and humbled themselves before their Lord, they are the companions of the Garden, remaining in it.
Masalul fareeqini kal a'maa wal asammi walbaseeri wassamee'; hal yastawiyaani masalaa; afalaa tazakkaroon
The likeness of the two parties is like the blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing. Are they equal in likeness? Will you not remember?
Wa laqad arsalnaa Noohan ilaa qawmihee innee lakum nazeerum mubeen
And We sent Nuh to his people: I am to you a clear warner,
Al laa ta'budooo illal laaha inneee akhaafu 'alaikum 'azaaba Yawmin aleem
that you worship none but Allah. I fear for you the punishment of a painful Day.

The chiefs who disbelieved among his people said, "We see you only as a human being like us, and we see that only the lowest among us follow you, at first glance. And we do not see in you any merit over us. Rather, we think you are liars."
Qaala yaa qawmi ara'aitum in kuntu 'alaa baiyinatim mir Rabbee wa aataanee rahmatam min 'indihee fa'um miyat 'alaikum anulzimuku moohaa wa antum lahaa kaarihoon
He said, "My people, have you considered, if I am on clear evidence from my Lord, and He has given me mercy from Himself, and it has been obscured from you, should we compel you to accept it while you are averse to it?
Wa yaa qawmi laaa as'alukum 'alaihi maalan in ajriya illaa 'alal laah; wa maaa ana bitaaridil lazeena aamanoo; innahum mulaaqoo Rabbihim wa laakinneee araakum qawman tajhaloon
My people, I ask you no wealth for it. My reward is only from Allah. And I am not going to drive away those who believed. They will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people who are ignorant.
Wa yaa qawmi mai yansurunee minal laahi in tarattuhum; afalaa tazak karoon
My people, who would help me against Allah if I drove them away? Will you not remember?
Wa laa aqoolu lakum 'indee khazaa'inul laahi wa laaa a'lamul ghaiba wa laa aqoolu inee malakunw wa laaa aqoolu lillazeena tazdareee a'yunukum lai yu'tiyahumul laahu khairan Allaahu a'lamu bimaa feee anfusihim innee izal laminaz zaalimeen
And I do not say to you that I hold the treasuries of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel, nor do I say of those your eyes look down upon that Allah will never give them good. Allah knows best what is in their souls. I would then be among the wrongdoers."
Qaaloo yaa Noohu qad jaadaltanaa fa aksarta jidaalanaa faatinaa bimaa ta'idunaaa in kunta minas saadiqeen

He said, "Only Allah will bring it to you, if He wills, and you cannot escape.
Wa laa yanfa'ukum nusheee in arattu an ansaha lakum in kaanal laahu yureedu ai yughwi yakum; Huwa Rabbukum wa ilaihi turja'oon
And my counsel will not benefit you, however much I want to counsel you, if Allah wants to leave you astray. He is your Lord, and to Him you will be returned."
Am yaqooloonaf taraahu qul inif taraituhoo fa'alaiya ijraamee wa ana bareee'um mimmaa tujrimoon
Or do they say he invented it? Say, "If I invented it, then upon me is my crime, and I am free of the crimes you commit."
Wa oohiya ilaa Noohin annahoo lany-yu'mina min qawmika illaa man qad aamana falaa tabta'is bimaa kaanoo yaf'aloon
And it was revealed to Nuh: no one of your people will believe except those who have already believed. So do not be distressed by what they have been doing.
Wasna'il fulka bi-a'yuninaa wa wahyinaa wa laa tukhaa tibnee fil lazeena zalamoo; innahum mughraqoon
And build the ship under Our eyes and by Our revelation, and do not address Me concerning those who did wrong. They are going to be drowned.
Wa yasn'ul fulka wa kullamaa marra 'alaihi malaum min qawmihee sakhiroo minh; qaala in taskharoo minnaa fa innaa naskharu minkum kamaa taskharoon
And he was building the ship, and every time a group of his people passed by him, they mocked him. He said, "If you mock us, we will mock you as you mock.

And you will come to know who will be visited by a punishment that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment will fall."

Until, when Our command came and the oven overflowed, We said, "Load into it a pair of every kind, and your family, except those against whom the word has already gone forth, and those who have believed." And none had believed with him except a few.

He said, "I will take refuge on a mountain that will protect me from the water." He said, "There is no protector today from the command of Allah, except for one on whom He has mercy." And a wave came between them, and he was among the drowned.

That is from the news of the unseen, which We reveal to you. You did not know it, you or your people, before this. So be patient. The good outcome is for those mindful of Allah.

They said, "Hud, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not going to leave our gods on your word, and we do not believe you.

And if you turn away, I have delivered to you what I was sent with. And my Lord will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him in anything. My Lord is Guardian over all things."
Wa lammaa jaaa'a amrunaa najainaa Hoodanw wallazeena aamanoo ma'ahoo birahmatim minnaa wa najainaahum min 'azaabin ghaleez
And when Our command came, We saved Hud and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and We saved them from a harsh punishment.
Wa tilka 'aad, jahadoo bi Aayaati Rabbihim wa 'asaw Rusulahoo wattaba'ooo amra kulli jabbaarin 'aneed
And that was Ad. They rejected the signs of their Lord, disobeyed His messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.
Wa utbi'oo fee haazihid dunyaa la'natanw wa Yawmal Qiyaamah; alaaa inna 'Aadan kafaroo Rabbahum; alaa bu'dal li 'Aadin qawmin Hood
And they were followed in this world by a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection. Without doubt, Ad disbelieved in their Lord. Away with Ad, the people of Hud.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
A Book Made Firm, Then Explained.
Verse 1 describes the Book with two verbs that a builder will recognize. Its verses were made firm, then explained in detail. Uhkimat, then fussilat. The structure is set first, and only then is the detail worked out. What follows in Part One is that method applied to men. Verse 3 gives the promise: seek forgiveness, turn back, and He will grant you good enjoyment for a stated term and give every possessor of merit his merit. Verse 52 repeats it with a specific yield attached. And between them stands the account of a man who built a ship in a dry place while the people around him laughed, and who then lost his own son to a mountain that was not there.
Verses 1 to 24
Two Moods, and One Reversal.
Verse 5 describes something people do without noticing. They fold up their chests to hide from Him. Even when they pull their garments over themselves, He knows what is inside. Verse 6 then makes the promise that removes the reason for most of a man's fear. There is no creature on the earth but that its provision is upon Allah. Not most creatures. Not the deserving ones. Verses 9 and 10 give the human being in two states, and the point is that both are failures. Given mercy and then having it removed, he is despairing and ungrateful. Given ease after hardship, he says the evils have departed from me, and he is exultant and boastful. Loss makes him hopeless and relief makes him arrogant, and both reactions are described as the same defect showing itself in different weather. Verse 11 gives the only exception, and it is not a personality type. Except those who were patient and did righteous deeds. Verse 12 then speaks to the man carrying the message with unusual tenderness. Perhaps you would leave part of what is revealed to you, and your chest is tightened by it, because they say, why has a treasure not been sent down to him. The pressure is named exactly, and then answered by shrinking the job: you are only a warner. Verses 15 and 16 are the hardest economics in the surah. Whoever wants the life of this world and its adornment, We will pay them in full for their deeds in it, and they will not be diminished in it. The work is not wasted. It is paid, completely, here, and the account closes at the grave. Verse 16 finishes it: what they made in it has collapsed, and what they used to do is worthless. Verse 24 gives the comparison the section has been building toward, and note that it uses four faculties rather than two. The blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing. A man can be missing the input or missing the response, and the verse pairs them so nobody escapes on a technicality.
Verses 25 to 49
He Built It While They Laughed.
Verse 27 gives the objection of the chiefs, and the phrase inside it is one every movement hears. We see that only the lowest among us follow you, at first glance. Badiya ar-ra'y, on a surface reading, without inspection. They dismissed his followers by appearance and admitted in the same breath that they had not looked. Verse 29 is Nuh refusing the trade that was being offered. I am not going to drive away those who believed. And verse 31 is the most careful thing any caller has ever said about his own limits. I do not say to you that I hold the treasuries of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel. Three claims disowned in one breath, none of which anyone had asked him to disown. He strips himself of every advantage before making his case. And then the last clause, which is the reason he said it: nor do I say of those your eyes look down upon that Allah will never give them good. Allah knows best what is in their souls. He refuses to grade the people the elite had already graded. Verse 37 gives the instruction and verse 38 gives the working conditions. He was building the ship, and every time a group of his people passed by him, they mocked him. A man building something no one has asked for, in a place with no water, in public, on instruction. That is the entire job description of anyone acting on something he alone was shown. Verse 41 is what he said when they finally boarded. In the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. The going and the stopping, both attributed. Verses 42 and 43 are the loss. He calls his son, and the son answers with the most reasonable sentence in the surah: I will take refuge on a mountain that will protect me from the water. It is a plan. It is based on evidence. Mountains are high and water is low. And verse 43 answers it in one clause. There is no protector today from the command of Allah. Then verses 45 through 47, which are the part of the account most readers pass over. Nuh appeals, quoting the promise back: my son is of my family, and Your promise is true. And the answer redefines the word he used. He is not of your family. It is a deed that is not righteous. The relationship is measured by conduct, not by blood, and a prophet had to be corrected on it. Verse 47 is his response, and it should be studied by anyone who has ever prayed for something he had no right to. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking You for what I have no knowledge of. He does not defend the request. He takes refuge from having made it.
Verses 50 to 60
Add Strength to Your Strength.
Verse 52 repeats the instruction from verse 3 and attaches two specific returns to it, which is unusual. Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance. He will send the sky upon you in abundance, and add strength to your strength. Rain, and added strength. Istighfar is presented as an input with material outputs, to a people who were the strongest of their age and were being offered more. Verse 55 is Hud alone in front of a nation, and what he says is a challenge nobody makes unless he is certain. So plot against me, all of you, then give me no respite. Verse 56 gives the ground he was standing on when he said it, and it is the line to keep from this part. I rely upon Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but He holds it by its forelock. Every living thing in the confrontation, including the ones threatening him, held at the front of the head. Then the clause that finishes it: my Lord is on a straight path. The power is not arbitrary. Verse 57 then defines what a man is actually responsible for. If you turn away, I have delivered to you what I was sent with. Delivery, complete. And the warning that follows is not about him: my Lord will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him in anything. Verse 59 gives the epitaph of Ad in three clauses, and the third is the one that explains the first two. They rejected the signs, disobeyed the messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant. They did not end up with no authority over them. They ended up with the wrong one.
Structural Summary
Verses One to Sixty. In the Name of Allah Is Its Course and Its Anchorage.
A Book made firm and then explained, offering a stated enjoyment and every man his due to whoever seeks forgiveness and turns back. A human being shown in two moods, hopeless in loss and boastful in relief, with patience and righteous work named as the only exception. The world's work paid in full here and closed at the grave. Then a prophet who refused to look down on the people the elite had already dismissed, who disowned every advantage before making his case, who built a boat in a dry place under public mockery, and who was corrected when he appealed for a son on the basis of blood. And a second prophet, alone before a nation, inviting them all to plot and naming what he was standing on.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 52. Take the promise literally for thirty days. Istighfar daily, and watch for the rain and the added strength.
Verses 9 and 10. Ask which of the two you become. Hopeless when it is removed, or boastful when it returns. Then read verse 11.
Verse 47. Look at what you have been asking for. If you cannot say you know it is good for you, add the words Nuh added.
