And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. Their gods whom they called upon besides Allah did not help them at all when the command of your Lord came, and they added nothing to them but ruin.

Wa kazaalika akhzu Rabbika izaaa akhazal quraa wa hiya zaalimah; inna akhzahooo aleemun shadeed

And such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. His seizing is painful and severe.

Inna fee zaalika la aayatal liman khaafa 'azaabal Aakhirah; zaalika Yawmum majmoo'ul lahun naasu wa zaalika Yawmum mashhood

In that is a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the hereafter. That is a Day for which people will be gathered, and that is a Day that will be witnessed.

Wa maa nu'akhkhiruhooo illaa li ajalim ma'dood

And We delay it only for a counted term.

On the Day it comes, no soul will speak except by His permission. Among them will be the wretched and the happy.

Fa ammal lazeena shaqoo fafin Naari lahum feehaa zafeerunw wa shaheeq

As for those who were wretched, they will be in the Fire, and in it they will have groaning and sighing,

Khaalideena feehaa maa daamatis samaawaatu wal ardu illaa maa shaaa'a Rabbuk; inna Rabbaka fa' 'aalul limaa yureed

remaining in it as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord wills. Your Lord does whatever He intends.

Wa ammal lazeena su'idoo fafil Jannati khaalideena feehaa maa daamatis samaawaatu wal ardu illaa maa shaaa'a Rabbuk; ataaa'an ghaira majzooz

And as for those who were made happy, they will be in the Garden, remaining in it as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord wills, a gift that will not be cut off.

Falaa taku fee miryatim mimmmaa ya'budu haaa'ulaaa'; maa ya'budoona illaa kamaa ya'budu aabaaa'uhum min qabl; wa innaa lamuwaf foohum naseebahum ghaira manqoos

So do not be in doubt about what these people worship. They worship only as their fathers worshipped before. And We will give them their share in full, undiminished.

Wa laqad aatainaa Moosal Kitaaba fakhtulifa feeh; wa law laa Kalimatun sabaqat mir Rabbika laqudiya bainahum; wa innahum lafee shakkim minhu mureeb

And We gave Musa the Book, and it was disputed about. And were it not for a word that had gone forth from your Lord, it would have been decided between them. And they are in disturbing doubt about it.

And your Lord will pay each of them in full for their deeds. He is Aware of what they do.

Fastaqim kamaaa umirta wa man taaba ma'aka wa laa tatghaw; innahoo bimaa ta'maloona Baseer

So remain on the straight path as you were commanded, and those who turned back with you, and do not transgress. He is Seeing of what you do.

Wa laa tarkanooo ilal lazeena zalamoo fatamassa kumun Naaru wa maa lakum min doonil laahi min awliyaaa'a summa laa tunsaroon

And do not lean toward those who do wrong, or the Fire will touch you, and you will have no protectors besides Allah, and you will not be helped.

Wa aqimis Salaata tarafayin nahaari wa zulafam minal layl; innal hasanaati yuzhibnas saiyi aat; zaalika zikraa liz zaakireen

And establish the prayer at the two ends of the day, and in the approaches of the night. Good deeds remove bad deeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.

Wasbir fa innal laaha laa yudee'u ajral muhsineen

And be patient, for Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good.

Falw laa kaana minal qurooni min qablikum ooloo baqiyyatiny yanhawna 'anil fasaadi fil ardi illaa qaleelam mimman anjainaa minhum; wattaba'al lazeena zalamoo maaa utrifoo feehi wa kaanoo mujrimeen

So why were there not among the generations before you people of remaining wisdom, forbidding corruption in the earth, except a few of those We saved from among them? And those who wronged pursued the luxury they were given, and they were criminals.

Wa maa kaana Rabbuka liyuhlikal quraa bizulminw wa ahluhaa muslihoon

And your Lord would not destroy the towns unjustly while their people were reformers.

Wa law shaaa'a Rabbuka laja'alannnaasa ummatanw waa hidatanw wa laa yazaaloona mukhtalifeen

And had your Lord willed, He would have made people one nation. But they will not cease to differ,

except those on whom your Lord has mercy, and for that He created them. And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled: I will fill Hell with jinn and people together.

Wa kullan naqussu 'alaika min ambaaa'ir Rusuli maa nusabbitu bihee fu'aadak; wa jaaa'aka fee haazihil haqqu wa maw'izatunw wa zikraa lilmu' mineen

And all that We relate to you of the accounts of the messengers is what We make your heart firm with. And in this has come to you the truth, and an instruction and a reminder for the believers.

Wa qul lillazeena laa yu'minoona' maloo 'alaa makaanatikum innaa 'aamiloon

And say to those who do not believe, "Work in your position. We are working.

Wantaziroo innaa mun taziroon

And wait. We are waiting."

Wa lillaahi ghaibus samaawaati wal ardi wa ilaihi yurja'ul amru kulluhoo fa'bu-dhu wa tawakkal 'alaih; wa maa Rabbuka bighaafilin 'ammaa ta'maloon

And to Allah belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and to Him the whole matter is returned. So worship Him and rely upon Him. And your Lord is not unaware of what you do.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Overview

The Instruction That Turned His Hair.

Part Two finishes the roll call and then, at verse 112, turns the whole surah on the man reading it. So remain on the straight path as you were commanded. Fastaqim kama umirt. One verb, and the qualifier that makes it hard: as you were commanded, not as you judge sufficient. Then the clause most people miss, which is why it is heavy: and those who turned back with you. He is told to hold the line and to hold it for the people who came with him. And then, immediately, a warning against overcorrecting: and do not transgress. Hold the standard exactly, carry others on it, and do not exceed it either. That is the instruction that a man could spend a life on.

Verses 61 to 83

The Guests Who Did Not Eat.

Verse 62 records what his people said to Salih, and it is worth reading carefully because it is a compliment used as a weapon. Salih, you were among us one in whom hope was placed before this. They had him marked for leadership. His refusal to carry their religion is treated as a betrayal of the position they had reserved for him. Any man who has declined to be what a group needed him to be has heard some version of that sentence. Verse 69 shows Ibrahim receiving strangers, and the detail is a lesson in hospitality: he did not delay in bringing a roasted calf. No conversation first, no asking who they were. Verse 70 is the turn, and it is subtle: when he saw that their hands did not reach for it, he found them strange and felt a fear. A guest who does not eat is a guest who has not come as a guest, and the ancient reading of that gesture was immediate. Verses 71 through 73 give the news to a woman past childbearing and answer her disbelief in one line: do you wonder at the command of Allah? Verse 74 then does something startling. So when the fear had left Ibrahim and the good news had reached him, he began to plead with Us for the people of Lut. He has just been told that his own family is receiving a son, and the first thing he does with the relief is argue for a city that is about to be destroyed. Verse 75 explains why he was like that, in three words: forbearing, often sighing, always turning back. Halim, awwah, munib. The pleading came out of that character, not out of a calculation. Verse 80 is Lut at the door with a mob outside, and it is the loneliest sentence in the surah. If only I had strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support. And verse 81 answers it immediately, before he finishes being alone. Lut, we are messengers of your Lord. They will never reach you. The support he wished for was already standing in the room.

Verses 84 to 95

Full Measure, and the Prayer That Interferes.

Verse 84 has Shu'ayb naming the offense and the condition in the same breath. Do not decrease the measure and the scale. I see you in prosperity, and I fear for you the punishment of an encompassing Day. He is not addressing a people in decline. He is warning men who are winning, about the method they are winning with. Verse 85 spells it out: give full measure and weight in justice, do not shortchange people in their goods, do not spread corruption. Verse 86 gives the alternative and it is one of the great phrases of the Quran. Baqiyyatullah khayrun lakum. What remains from Allah is better for you. The margin a man shaves off a transaction is set against the remainder that comes from Allah, and the smaller lawful remainder is called better. Then, in the same verse, he removes himself from the enforcement: and I am not a guardian over you. Verse 87 is the reply, and it has not changed in fourteen centuries. Does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worshipped, or that we should not do with our wealth what we wish? They locate the intrusion precisely. Not the belief. The interference of the belief with the accounts. And they say it with sarcasm, calling him the forbearing, the right-minded one. Verse 88 is his answer, and it is the sentence any reformer should carry. I only intend reform, as much as I am able. And my success is only through Allah. In uridu illa al-islah ma istata't, wa ma tawfiqi illa billah. The ambition is capped at his capacity, and the outcome is not attributed to him at all. Verse 90 closes his call on a name of Allah that appears rarely and lands here for a reason: My Lord is Merciful, Loving. Wadud, to men he is warning. Verse 91 is their threat, and it reveals what was actually protecting him: were it not for your family, we would have stoned you. Verse 92 is his answer, and it is the sharpest line he speaks. Is my family more honorable to you than Allah, and you have put Him behind your backs? They feared his clan and ignored his Lord, and he names the arithmetic out loud.

Verses 96 to 123

Remain Steadfast as You Were Commanded.

Verse 100 gives the record a shape a reader can picture. Some of them are still standing, and some are harvested. Ruins upright and ruins flattened, both from the same cause. Verse 101 assigns responsibility with no ambiguity: We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. Verse 102 then states the pattern in a single sentence worth remembering. Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. His seizing is painful and severe. Verse 105 describes the silence of that Day: no soul will speak except by His permission. Then the four closing instructions, verses 112 through 115, which are the practical core of the whole surah. Remain on the straight path as you were commanded, and hold it for those who turned back with you, and do not transgress. Do not lean toward those who do wrong, and note the word: tarkanu, to lean, to rest your weight on something, which is a smaller thing than joining them and is still forbidden. Establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in the approaches of the night, and then the reason attached: good deeds remove bad deeds. And be patient, for Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good. Verses 116 and 117 then deliver the most political statement in the surah, and it is worth reading twice. Why were there not among the generations before you people of remaining wisdom, forbidding corruption in the earth, except a few. Ulu baqiyyah, those with something left in them. Their societies fell because almost nobody was left standing against the corruption. And verse 117 states the rule that follows from it: your Lord would not destroy the towns unjustly while their people were reformers. Not while their people were believers. Muslihun, people actively repairing things. Belief alone is not what preserves a place. Verse 120 then tells the reader why any of these accounts were given at all. All that We relate to you of the accounts of the messengers is what We make your heart firm with. Not information. Ballast. And verse 123 closes the surah with the whole matter handed back. To Him the whole matter is returned. So worship Him and rely upon Him.

Structural Summary

Verses Sixty-One to One Hundred Twenty-Three. Remain on the Straight Path as You Were Commanded.

A man is reproached for refusing the position his people had reserved for him. Guests who do not reach for the food are recognized for what they are, and a man given good news about his own household spends it arguing for a doomed city. Lut wishes for a strong support while the support is already in the room. Shu'ayb warns a prosperous people about the method of their prosperity, hears religion accused of interfering with their accounts, and answers by capping his ambition at his capacity and assigning the outcome to Allah. Then the surah turns on the reader: hold the line exactly as commanded, carry the people who came with you, do not lean even slightly toward wrongdoers, pray at the ends of the day, and be patient. And it names what actually preserves a society, which is not belief but people actively repairing it.

The Practice

Take It Into the Week

Verse 112. Take one standard you have quietly lowered and restore it to what you were actually told, not to what you decided was enough.

Verse 113. Find the place where you have been leaning, not joining, just resting some weight on something you know is wrong. Stand up off it.

Verse 117. Pick one thing in your own circle that needs repairing and start repairing it this week. That verse says the repairing is what holds a place up.
