Ta'awwudh · Seeking Refuge

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytani ar-rajim. I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.

The Name · Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Bismillahi ar-Rahmani ar-Rahim. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

This is the only chapter of the Quran that opens without the bismillah.

The Surah · In Three Parts

At-Tawbah is the last long chapter revealed, and it reads like it. The treaties are being closed out. The army is being called. The men who will not come are being named one after another until the community can see them.

It carries two names. At-Tawbah, the repentance, for the passage where three men who stayed behind are cut off from everyone and then forgiven in the same chapter that exposed them. And Bara’ah, the disavowal, from its first word.

Ibn Abbas gave it a third name. Asked about At-Tawbah he said it is al-Fadihah, the exposer, because it kept coming down saying “and of them, and of them” until they thought it would not leave anyone out. Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

On the missing bismillah, Ibn Abbas asked Uthman why Bara’ah was placed beside Al-Anfal without the line of mercy between them. Uthman said the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to have new revelation placed where he directed, and he died without telling them about this one, and its subject resembled Al-Anfal, so he joined them. Reported by Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi.

Three parts, in order.

Four months of notice. Treaties honored where they were honored. Protection granted to an enemy who asks for it. A question about whether a second loyalty is running underneath the first. And two ways of keeping the form while emptying it, one done with metal and one done with a calendar.
