The Surah · Verses 73 to 129

Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu jaahidil kuffaara walmunaafiqeena waghluz 'alaihim; wa maawaahum jahannnamu wa bi'sal maseer

Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. Their shelter is Hell, and it is a wretched destination.

Yahlifoona billaahi wa qaaloo wa laqad qaaloo kalimatal kufri wa kafaroo ba'da Islaamihim wa hammoo bimaa lam yanaaloo; wa maa naqamooo illaaa an aghnaa humullaahu wa Rasooluhoo min fadlih; fainy yatooboo yaku khairal lahum wa iny yatawal law yu'az zibhumullaahu 'azaaban aleeman fiddunyaa wal Aakhirah; wamaa lahum fil ardi minw waliyyinw wa laa naseer

They swear by Allah that they did not say it, and they did say the word of disbelief, and they disbelieved after their submission, and they attempted what they could not reach. And they resented nothing except that Allah and His Messenger enriched them from His bounty. So if they repent it will be better for them. And if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And they will have no ally on earth and no helper.

Wa minhum man 'aaha dal laaha la'in aataanaa min fadlihee lanas saddaqanna wa lanakoonanna minassaaliheen

And among them is one who made a pledge with Allah, if He gives us of His bounty we will certainly give charity and we will certainly be of the righteous.

Falammaaa aataahum min fadlihee bakhiloo bihee wa tawallaw wa hum mu'ridoon

Then when He gave them of His bounty, they were miserly with it and turned away, refusing.

Fa a'qabahum nifaaqan fee quloobihim ilaa Yawmi yalqaw nahoo bimaaa akhlaful laaha maa wa'adoohu wa bimaa kaanoo yakhziboon

So He put hypocrisy in their hearts, lasting until the Day they meet Him, because they broke with Allah what they had promised Him, and because they were lying.

Did they not know that Allah knows their secret and their private talk, and that Allah is the Knower of all that is hidden.

Allazeena yalmizoonal mut tawwi'eena minalmu'mineena fis sadaqaati wallazeena laa yajidoona illaa juhdahum fayaskharoona minhum sakhiral laahu minhum wa lahum azaabun aleem

Those who criticize the believers who give willingly of the charity, and criticize those who find nothing but their own effort, and they mock them. Allah has mocked them, and for them is a painful punishment.

Istaghfir lahum aw laa tastaghfir lahum in tastaghfir lahum sab'eena marratan falany yaghfiral laahu lahum; zaalika bi annahum kafaroo billaahi wa Rasoolih; wallaahu laa yahdil qawmal faasiqeen

Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them. That is because they rejected Allah and His Messenger. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

Farihal mukhallafoona bimaq'adihim khilaafa Rasoolil laahi wa karihooo ai yujaahidoo bi amwaalihim wa anfusihim fee sabeelil laahi wa qaaloo la tanfiroo fil harr; qul Naaru jahannama ashaddu harraa; law kaanoo yafqahoon

Those who were left behind rejoiced in their sitting, behind the Messenger of Allah, and they hated to struggle with their wealth and their selves in the way of Allah, and they said, do not march out in the heat. Say, the fire of Hell is hotter, if only they understood.

Falyadhakoo qaleelanw walyabkoo kaseeran jazaaa'am bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon

So let them laugh a little and weep much, as payment for what they have been earning.

Fa ir raja'akal laahu ilaa taaa'ifatim minhum fastaaa zanooka lilkhurooji faqul lan takhrujoo ma'iya abadanw a lan tuqaatiloo ma'iya 'aduwwan innakum radeetum bilqu'oodi awwala marratin faq'udoo ma'al khaalifeen

So if Allah returns you to a group of them and they ask your permission to go out, say, you will never go out with me, and you will never fight an enemy with me. You were pleased to sit the first time, so sit with those who stay behind.

Wa laa tusalli 'alaaa ahadim minhum maata abadanw wa laa taqum 'alaa qabriheee innahum kafaroo billaahi wa Rasoolihee wa maatoo wa hum faasiqoon

And never pray over any of them who dies, and do not stand at his grave. They rejected Allah and His Messenger, and they died while defiantly disobedient.

Wa laa tu'jibka amwaa luhum wa awlaaduhum; innamaa yureedul laahu ai yu'az zibahum bihaa fid dunyaa wa tazhaqa anfusuhum wa hum kaafiroon

And let neither their wealth nor their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them with it in this world, and that their souls should depart while they are disbelievers.

Wa izaaa unzilat Sooratun an aaminoo billaahi wa jaahidoo ma'a Rasoolihis taazanaka uluttawli minhum wa qaaloo zarnaa nakum ma'alqaa 'ideen

And when a chapter is sent down saying believe in Allah and struggle alongside His Messenger, the men of means among them ask your permission and say, leave us to be with those who sit.

They were pleased to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.

Laakinir Rasoolu wal lazeena aamanoo ma'ahoo jaahadoo bi amwaalihim wa anfusihim; wa ulaaa'ika lahumul khairaatu wa ulaaa'ika humul muflihoon

But the Messenger and those who believed with him struggled with their wealth and their selves. Those are the ones who have the good things, and those are the ones who succeed.

A'addal laahu lahum Jannaatin tajree min tahtihal anhaaru khaalideena feehaa; zaalikal fawzul 'azeem

Allah has prepared for them gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, remaining in them. That is the great triumph.

Wa jaaa'al mu'az ziroona minal A'raabi liyu'zana lahum wa qa'adal lazeena kazabul laaha wa Rasoolah; sayuseebul lazeena kafaroo minhum 'azaabun aleem

And those who made excuses among the desert Arabs came so that permission would be given to them, and those who lied to Allah and His Messenger sat. A painful punishment will strike those of them who disbelieved.

Laisa 'alad du'aaaa'i wa laa 'alal mardaa wa laa 'alal lazeena laa yajidoona maa yunfiqoona harajun izaa nasahoo lillaahi wa Rasoolih; maa 'alal muhsineena min sabeel; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem

There is no blame on the weak, nor on the sick, nor on those who find nothing to spend, when they are sincere toward Allah and His Messenger. There is no way against those who do good. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Wa laa 'alal lazeena izaa maaa atawka litahmilahum qulta laaa ajidu maaa ahmilukum 'alaihi tawallaw wa a'yunuhum tafeedu minaddam'i hazanan allaa yajidoo maa yunfiqoon

Nor on those who came to you so you could carry them, and you said, I find nothing to carry you on, and they turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears out of grief that they found nothing to spend.

Innamas sabeelu 'alal lazeena yastaazinoonaka wa hum aghniyaaa'; radoo biany-yakoonoo ma'al khawaalifi wa taba'al laahu 'alaa quloobihim fahum laa ya'lamoon

The way is only against those who ask your permission while they are rich. They were pleased to be with those who stay behind, and Allah sealed their hearts, so they do not know.

Ya'taziroona ilaikum izaa raja'tum ilaihim; qul laa ta'taziroo lan nu'mina lakum qad nabba annal laahu min akhbaarikum; wa sa yaral laahu 'amalakum wa Rasooluhoo suma turaddoona ilaa 'Aalimil Ghaibi washshahaadati fa yunabbi'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon

They will make excuses to you when you return to them. Say, do not make excuses, we will not believe you. Allah has already informed us of your news. And Allah will see your work, and His Messenger. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you were doing.

Sa yahlifoona billaahi lakum izanqalabtum ilaihim litu'ridoo 'anhum fa a'ridoo 'anhum innahum rijsunw wa maawaahum jahannamu jazaaa 'ambimaa kaanoo yaksiboon

They will swear to you by Allah when you turn back to them, so you will leave them alone. So leave them alone. They are filth, and their shelter is Hell, as payment for what they have been earning.

Yahlifoona lakum litardaw 'anhum fa in tardaw 'anhum fa innal laaha laa yardaa 'anil qawmil faasiqeen

They swear to you so that you will be pleased with them. And if you are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.

Al A'raabu ashaddu kufranw wa nifaaqanw wa ajdaru allaa ya'lamoo hudooda maaa anzalal laahu 'alaa Rasoolih; wallaahu 'Aleemun Hakeem

The desert Arabs are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely not to know the limits of what Allah sent down to His Messenger. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Wa minal A'raabi mai yattakhizu maa yunfiqu maghramanw wa yatarabbasu bikumud dawaaa'ir; alaihim daaa'iratus saw'; wallaahu Samee'un 'Aleem

And among the desert Arabs is one who takes what he spends as a loss and waits for the turns of fortune to go against you. Upon them is the evil turn. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

Wa minal A'raabi mai yu'minu billaahi wal yawmil AAkhiri wa yattakhizu maa yunfiqu qurubaatin 'indal laahi wa salawaatir Rasool; alaaa innahaa qurbatul lahum; sayudkhiluhumul laahu fee rahmatih; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

And among the desert Arabs is one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and takes what he spends as a means of nearness to Allah and of the prayers of the Messenger. It is indeed a nearness for them. Allah will admit them into His mercy. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Was saabiqoonal awwa loona minal Muhaajireena wal Ansaari wallazeenat taba'oo hum bi ihsaanir radiyal laahu 'anhum wa radoo 'anhu wa a'adda lahum jannnaatin tajree tahtahal anhaaru khaalideena feehaaa abadaa; zaalikal fawzul 'azeem

And the first to go ahead, from the emigrants and the helpers, and those who followed them in doing good, Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, remaining in them forever. That is the great triumph.

Wa mimmann hawlakum minal A'raabi munaafiqoona wa min ahlil Madeenati maradoo 'alan nifaaq, laa ta'lamuhum nahnu na'lamuhum; sanu'azzibuhum marrataini summa yuraddoona ilaa 'azaabin 'azeem

And among those around you of the desert Arabs are hypocrites, and among the people of Madinah. They have grown practiced in hypocrisy. You do not know them. We know them. We will punish them twice, then they will be returned to a great punishment.

Wa aakharoona' tarafoo bizunoobihim khalatoo 'amalan saalihanw wa aakhara saiyi'an 'asal laahu ai yatooba 'alaihim; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

And there are others who admitted their sins. They mixed a good deed with another that was bad. It may be that Allah will turn to them in mercy. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Khuz min amwaalihim sadaqtan tutahhiruhum wa tuzakkeehim bihaa wa salli 'alaihim inna salaataka sakanul lahum; wallaahu Samee'un 'Aleem

Take from their wealth a charity by which you cleanse them and raise them, and pray for them. Your prayer is a settling for them. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

Did they not know that it is Allah who accepts the repentance of His servants and takes the charity, and that Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Wa quli'maloo fasayaral laahu 'amalakum wa Rasooluhoo walmu'minoona wa saturaddoona ilaa 'Aalimil Ghaibi washshahaadati fa yunabbi'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon

And say, work. Allah will see your work, and His Messenger, and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will tell you what you were doing.

Wa aakharoona murjawna li amril laahi imaa yu'az zibuhum wa immaa yatoobu 'alaihim; wallaahu 'Aleemun Hakeem

And there are others held back for the command of Allah, either He will punish them or He will turn to them in mercy. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

And those who took a mosque for harm and disbelief and division between the believers, and as a station for whoever fought Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, we intended nothing but the best. And Allah bears witness that they are liars.

Laa taqum feehi abadaa; lamasjidun ussisa 'alat taqwaa min awwali yawmin ahaqqu an taqooma feeh; feehi rijaaluny yuhibbona ai yatatahharoo, wallaahu yuhibbul mmuttah hireen

Never stand in it. A mosque founded on consciousness of Allah from the first day is more deserving that you stand in it. In it are men who love to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who purify themselves.

Afaman assasa bunyaa nahoo 'alaa taqwaa minal laahi wa ridwaanin khairun am man assasa bunyaanahoo 'alaa shafaa jurufin haarin fanhaara bihee fee Naari Jahannnam; wallaahu laa yahdil qawmaz zaalimeen

Is one who founded his building on consciousness of Allah and His approval better, or one who founded his building on the edge of a crumbling bank, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Laa yazaalu bunyaanu humul lazee banaw reebatan fee quloobihim illaaa an taqatta'a quloobuhum; wal laahu 'Aleemun Hakeem

The building they built will not cease to be a doubt in their hearts until their hearts are cut to pieces. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Innal laahash taraa minal mu'mineena anfusahum wa amwaalahum bi anna lahumul jannah; yuqaatiloona fee sabeelil laahi fa yaqtuloona wa yuqtaloona wa'dan 'alaihi haqqan fit Tawraati wal Injeeli wal Qur-aan; wa man awfaa be'ahdihee minal laah; fastabshiroo bibai'ikumul lazee baaya'tum bih; wa zaalika huwal fawzul 'azeem

Allah has purchased from the believers their selves and their wealth, for the garden being theirs. They fight in the way of Allah, so they kill and are killed. A promise binding upon Him in truth, in the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran. And who is more faithful to his agreement than Allah. So rejoice in the sale you have made. And that is the great triumph.

Those who turn back to Him, who worship, who praise, who travel, who bow, who prostrate, who order what is right and forbid what is wrong, and who guard the limits of Allah. And give good news to the believers.

Maa kaana lin nabiyyi wallazeena aamanooo ai yastaghfiroo lilmushrikeena wa law kaanoo ulee qurbaa mim ba'di maa tabiyana lahum annahum Ashaabul jaheem

It is not for the Prophet and those who believed to ask forgiveness for the idolaters, even if they are relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the blaze.

And the asking of forgiveness by Ibrahim for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. Then when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he withdrew from him. Ibrahim was deeply tender, forbearing.

Wa maa kaanal laahu liyudilla qawmam ba'da iz hadaahum hatta yubaiyina lahum maa yattaqoon; innal laaha bikulli shai'in 'Aleem

And Allah would not let a people go astray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them what they should guard against. Allah is Knowing of all things.

Innal laaha lahoo mulkus samaawaati wal ardi yuhyee wa yumeet; wa maa lakum min doonil laahi minw waliyyinw wa laa naseer

To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and He gives death. And you have no ally besides Allah and no helper.

Allah has turned in mercy to the Prophet and the emigrants and the helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a group of them had nearly turned aside. Then He turned to them in mercy. He is Kind to them, Merciful.

And to the three who were left behind, until the earth closed in on them for all its width, and their own selves closed in on them, and they became certain that there is no refuge from Allah except to Him. Then He turned to them so they could turn back. Allah is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanut taqul laaha wa koonoo ma'as saadiqeen

You who believe, be conscious of Allah and be with the truthful.

It was not for the people of Madinah and those around them of the desert Arabs to stay behind the Messenger of Allah, nor to prefer themselves over him. That is because no thirst strikes them, and no fatigue, and no hunger in the way of Allah, and they tread no ground that angers the disbelievers, and they take nothing from an enemy, without a good deed being written for them by it. Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.

And they spend no amount, small or large, and they cross no valley, without it being written for them, so that Allah may reward them for the best of what they were doing.

Wa maa kaanal mu'minoona liyanfiroo kaaaffah; falaw laa nafara min kulli firqatim minhum taaa'ifatul liyatafaqqahoo fiddeeni wa liyunziroo qawmahum izaa raja'ooo ilaihim la'allahum yahzaroon

And it is not for the believers to march out all together. So why does a group from every division among them not go out to gain understanding in the religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, so that they may be careful.

Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo qaatilul lazeena yaloonakum minal kuffaari walyajidoo feekum ghilzah; wa'lamooo annal laaha ma'al muttaqeen

You who believe, fight those of the disbelievers who are near you, and let them find firmness in you. And know that Allah is with those who are conscious of Him.

Wa izaa maaa unzilat Sooratun faminhum mai yaqoolu aiyukum zaadat hu haazihee eemaanaa; fa ammal lazeena aamanoo fazaadat hum eemaananw wa hum yastabshiroon

And whenever a chapter is sent down, there are some of them who say, which of you has this increased in belief. As for those who believed, it increased them in belief, and they are glad.

Wa ammal lazeena fee quloobihim maradun fazaadat hum rijsan ilaa rijsihim wa maatoo wa hum kaafiroon

And as for those in whose hearts is sickness, it added defilement to their defilement, and they died as disbelievers.

Awalaa yarawna annahum yuftanoona fee kulli 'aamim marratan aw marrataini summa laa yatooboona wa laa hum yazzakkkaroon

Do they not see that they are tested once or twice every year. Then they do not repent and they do not take heed.

Wa izaa maaa unzilat Sooratun nazara ba'duhum ilaa ba'din hal yaraakum min ahadin summman sarafoo; sarafal laahu quloobahum bi annahum qawmul laa yafqahoon

And whenever a chapter is sent down, they look at one another, does anyone see you. Then they slip away. Allah has turned their hearts away because they are a people who do not understand.

Laqad jaaa'akum Rasoolum min anfusikum 'azeezun 'alaihi maa 'anittum hareesun 'alaikum bilmu'mineena ra'oofur raheem

A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering is heavy on him. He is deeply concerned for you, kind and merciful to the believers.

Fa in tawallaw faqul lhasbiyal laahu laaa ilaaha illaa Huwa 'alaihi tawakkkaltu wa Huwa Rabbul 'Arshil 'Azeem

So if they turn away, say, Allah is enough for me. There is no god except Him. Upon Him I rely. And He is the Lord of the great throne.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Overview

The Exposer, and the Three Who Were Left.

Part Three is where the chapter earns the name Ibn Abbas gave it. And of them, and of them, one group after another, until nobody could pretend the description was general.

And then it turns. Verse 91 exempts the weak, the sick and the poor by name. Verse 92 records men who came asking for a mount, were told there was none, and walked away crying because they could not afford to go. Verse 102 opens the door for men who mixed a good deed with a bad one and admitted it. Verse 106 leaves three men suspended with the outcome unnamed, and twelve verses later gives them the most exact description of guilt in the Quran.

The chapter that opens with disavowal ends with a mosque demolished, a purchase agreement, a father withdrawn from, three men forgiven, and two verses about the Prophet, peace be upon him, that read like nothing else in the chapter.

Zayd ibn Thabit said that when the Quran was being collected he found the last verses of At-Tawbah with Abu Khuzayma al-Ansari and with no one else. Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. These two verses were the hardest to find, and they are the two that describe how much the man carrying all of this cared about the people refusing it.

Verses 73 to 96

The Pledge Made in Need.

Verses 75 to 77 are three verses and one mechanism. A man makes a pledge with Allah. If He gives us of His bounty we will certainly give charity and certainly be of the righteous. Then it is given. Then he keeps it and turns away. And the consequence in verse 77 is not a punishment applied from outside. He put hypocrisy in their hearts, lasting until the Day they meet Him. The hypocrisy came after the broken promise, not before it. Something a man does to himself in a moment can become the shape of him for the rest of his life.

Verse 79 records the smallest cruelty in the chapter. They mocked the wealthy who gave generously, saying it was for show, and mocked the poor man who brought what little he had, saying it was not worth collecting. There is no amount that satisfies a mocker, because the amount was never the subject.

Verse 80 has a history. Ibn Umar reported that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, was asked to pray over Abdullah ibn Ubayy, he said he had been given a choice and would ask more than seventy times. Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. The verse is not arithmetic. Seventy stands for any number. And the man reading it said he would go past it anyway, which tells you what he was.

Verses 81 and 82 catch the excuse in the exact words it was spoken in. Do not march out in the heat. Say, the fire of Hell is hotter. Then, let them laugh a little and weep much. Not a threat. A ratio.

And then verses 91 and 92, which change the temperature of the entire chapter. No blame on the weak, the sick, or those who find nothing to spend, when they are sincere. And no blame on the men who came asking for transport, were told there was none, and turned away with their eyes overflowing out of grief that they could not spend. The men who wept because they had to stay are placed in the record beside the men who laughed because they got to. Both are exempt from the march. Only one of them is exempt from the verdict.

Verses 97 to 110

Two Foundations.

Verses 98 and 99 sit next to each other on purpose, and the difference between the two men is entirely internal. One takes what he spends as a loss and waits for your fortune to turn. The other takes what he spends as nearness. Same amount could leave both their hands. The verse classifies them by what the spending is to them.

Verse 101 says something that should end anyone’s confidence in his own detection. They have grown practiced in hypocrisy. You do not know them. We know them. The Prophet, peace be upon him, in his own city, is told he cannot identify them by looking. Anyone certain he can spot it in a room is claiming something that was withheld from the best of creation.

Then verse 102, and it is the most useful verse in Part Three for an ordinary person. Others admitted their sins. They mixed a good deed with another that was bad. It may be that Allah will turn to them in mercy. Not men who repented perfectly. Men whose record is genuinely mixed and who stopped arguing about it. The admission is the whole of what they did.

Verse 103 tells the Prophet, peace be upon him, to take a charity from them that cleanses and raises, and then to pray for them, because your prayer is sakan for them, a settling. Correction, then payment, then someone praying over you until you can rest.

And verses 107 to 110 give the case of the mosque built to cause harm. A building with a mihrab in it, put up by men who swore they intended nothing but good, and it was pulled down. Verse 109 puts the two structures side by side: one founded on consciousness of Allah and His approval, one founded on the lip of a crumbling bank that gives way with the builder still standing on it. Nothing in the verse compares the buildings. The comparison is entirely at the level of what is underneath them.

Verse 110 adds the part people miss. Their building will not cease to be a doubt in their hearts. Something built wrong keeps producing unease in the man who built it, for as long as he lives.

Verses 111 to 129

The Sale, and the Last Two Verses.

Verse 111 states a contract. Allah has purchased from the believers their selves and their wealth, and the price is the garden. Then, so rejoice in the sale you have made. A man is told to be pleased about a transaction in which he hands over the two things he owns and receives something he cannot inspect first. The guarantee offered is not evidence. It is the identity of the other party. Who is more faithful to his agreement than Allah.

Verse 112 then lists nine descriptions of the people on that side of the contract, with no verb between them. Turning back, worshipping, praising, travelling, bowing, prostrating, ordering right, forbidding wrong, guarding the limits.

Verses 113 and 114 handle something no one wants to face. Ibrahim, peace be upon him, kept asking forgiveness for his father because he had promised him he would, and stopped only when it became unmistakable. The verse does not criticize him for it. It calls him awwah, deeply tender, and halim, forbearing, in the same breath as recording that he withdrew. The tenderness is given as the explanation for how long he kept going.

Then verse 118, the three who were left. Ka’b ibn Malik, who told the truth about having no excuse when he could easily have lied, and was cut off from every person in the city for fifty nights. His account is recorded in al-Bukhari and Muslim. The verse describes what that did to him with a precision nobody has improved on. The earth closed in on them for all its width, and their own selves closed in on them. The outer world first, then the inner one, and the second is worse. And the way out is stated as the moment they became certain there is no refuge from Allah except to Him.

Then verse 119 lands, one line, immediately after. Be conscious of Allah and be with the truthful. Ka’b said afterward that Allah saved him by his truthfulness. The command arrives attached to a man who paid for it in advance.

Verses 120 and 121 answer everyone who thinks the account only records outcomes. No thirst, no fatigue, no hunger, no ground trodden that angers an enemy, no amount spent small or large, no valley crossed, without it being written. The steps count. Not only the arrival.

Verse 122 then prevents the obvious overcorrection. It is not for the believers to march out all together. A group must stay to gain understanding in the religion and to teach their people when they return. The chapter that spent ninety verses on men who would not go now says plainly that not everyone was supposed to.

And then the last two verses. A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering is heavy on him. He is deeply concerned for you, kind and merciful to the believers. After all of it, after the exposure and the disavowal and the demolished mosque, the chapter closes by telling the people what the man delivering it felt about them. And the final verse gives him the sentence to say when they turn away anyway. Allah is enough for me. There is no god except Him. Upon Him I rely. And He is the Lord of the great throne.

Structural Summary

Verses Seventy-Three to One Hundred and Twenty-Nine. The Exposer, and the Three Who Were Left.

A pledge made in need and broken in plenty, becoming permanent. Mockery aimed at both the large gift and the small one. An excuse about the heat, answered with a ratio. Men weeping because they could not go. A verdict withheld on three men and then reversed. Two buildings compared only at the foundation. A purchase in which both of a man’s assets are handed over. A father withdrawn from by the most tender of men. The earth narrowing, then the self narrowing. And a closing description of the one who carried all of it.

The Practice

Take It Into the Week

Verse 75. The verse records a pledge made in need and dropped in comfort. Name one thing you promised Allah during a hard stretch that ended when the stretch did. Restart it this week at whatever size you can actually sustain.

Verse 102. The verse describes men who simply admitted their sins, with no claim of a clean record. Say one of yours out loud in prayer tonight, named specifically, with no explanation attached to it.

Verse 121. The verse says no amount and no valley goes unwritten. Take the effort you have been treating as wasted because it produced nothing. Continue it this week on the understanding that the recording already happened.
