The Surah · Verses 38 to 72
Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo maa lakum izaa qeela lakumun firoo fee sabeelil laahis saaqaltum ilal ard; aradeetum bilhayaatid dunyaa minal Aakhirah; famaa ma taaul hayaatiddunyaa fil Aakhirati illaa qaleel
You who believe, what is with you that when you are told march out in the way of Allah, you sink heavily toward the ground. Are you satisfied with the life of this world instead of the Hereafter. The enjoyment of the life of this world in the Hereafter is only a little.
Illaa tanfiroo yu'az zibkum 'azaaban aleemanw wa yastabdil qawman ghairakum wa laa tadurroohu shai'aa; wal laahu 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer
If you do not march out, He will punish you with a painful punishment and replace you with a people other than you, and you will not harm Him in anything. And Allah is able to do all things.
Illaa tansuroohu faqad nasarahul laahu iz akhrajahul lazeena kafaroo saaniyasnaini iz humaa filghaari iz yaqoolu lisaahibihee la tahzan innnal laaha ma'anaa fa anzalallaahu sakeenatahoo 'alaihi wa aiyadahoo bijunoodil lam tarawhaa wa ja'ala kalimatal lazeena kafarus suflaa; wa Kalimatul laahi hiyal 'ulyaa; wallaahu 'Azeezun Hakeem;
If you do not support him, Allah has already supported him, when those who disbelieved drove him out, the second of two, when the two of them were in the cave, when he said to his companion, do not grieve, Allah is with us. So Allah sent down His stillness upon him and strengthened him with forces you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest. And the word of Allah is the highest. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.
Infiroo khifaafanw wa siqaalanw wa jaahidoo bi amwaalikum wa anfusikum fee sabeelil laah; zaalikum khairul lakum in kuntum ta'lamoon
March out, light or heavy, and struggle with your wealth and your selves in the way of Allah. That is better for you, if you only knew.
Law kaana 'aradan qareebanw wa safaran qaasidal lattaba'ooka wa laakim ba'udat 'alaihimush shuqqah; wa sayahlifoona billaahi lawis tata'naa lakharajnaa ma'akum; yuhlikoona anfusahum wal laahu ya'lamu innahum lakaa ziboon
Had it been a near gain and an easy journey, they would have followed you. But the distance was long for them. And they will swear by Allah, if we had been able we would have gone out with you. They destroy themselves, and Allah knows that they are liars.
'Afal laahu 'anka lima azinta lahum hattaa yatabai yana lakal lazeena sadaqoo wa ta'lamal kaazibeen
May Allah pardon you. Why did you give them permission before it became clear to you who was truthful and you knew the liars.
Laa yastaazinukal lazeena yu'minoona billaahi wal Yawmil Aakhiri ai yujaa hidoo bi amwaalihim wa anfusihim; wallaahu 'aleemum bilmut taqeen
Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask your permission to be excused from struggling with their wealth and their selves. And Allah knows those who are conscious of Him.
Innamaa yastaazinukal lazeena laa yu'minoona billaahi wal Yawmil Aakhiri wartaabat quloobuhum fahum fee raibihim yataraddadoon
Only those ask your permission who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, and their hearts have fallen into doubt, so they waver in their doubt.
And if they had wanted to go out, they would have prepared equipment for it. But Allah disliked their being sent, so He held them back, and it was said, sit with those who sit.
Law kharajoo feekum maa zaadookum ilaa Khabaalanw wa la awda'oo khilaalakum yabghoona kumul fitnata wa feekum sammaa'oona lahum; wallaahu 'aleemum biz zaalimeen
Had they gone out among you, they would have added nothing to you except ruin, and they would have rushed about between you seeking to stir you into discord, and among you are men who listen to them. And Allah knows the wrongdoers.
Laqadib taghawul fitnata min qablu wa qallaboo lakal umoora hattaa jaaa'al haqqu wa zahara amrul laahi wa hum kaarihoon
They sought discord before, and they turned matters over against you until the truth came and the command of Allah appeared, while they hated it.
Wa minhum mai yaqoolu' zal lee wa laa taftinneee; alaa fil fitnati saqatoo; wa inna Jahannama lamuheetatum bil kaafireen
And among them is one who says, give me permission and do not put me to trial. They have already fallen into the trial. And Hell surrounds the disbelievers.
In tusibka hasanatun tasu'hum; wa in tusibka museebatuny yaqooloo qad akhaznaaa amranaa min qablu wa yatawallaw wa hum farihoon
If good comes to you it distresses them. And if a disaster strikes you they say, we took our precaution before, and they turn away rejoicing.
Qul lany-yuseebanaaa illaa maa katabal laahu lanaa Huwa mawlaanaa; wa 'alal laahi falyatawak kalimu 'minoon
Say, nothing will strike us except what Allah has written for us. He is our Protector. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
Qul hal tarabbasoona binaaa illaaa ihdal husnayayni wa nahnu natrabbasu bikum ai yus eebakumul laahu bi'azaa bim min 'indiheee aw biaidee naa fatarabbasooo innaa ma'akum mutarabbisoon
Say, are you waiting for anything to happen to us except one of the two best outcomes. And we are waiting for Allah to strike you with a punishment from Him or by our hands. So wait. We are waiting with you.
Qul anfiqoo taw'an aw karhal lany yutaqabbala min kum innakum kuntum qawman faasiqeen
Say, spend willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. You have been a defiantly disobedient people.
Wa maa mana'ahum an tuqbala minhum nafaqaatuhum illaaa annnahum kafaroo billaahi wa bi Rasoolihee wa laa yaatoonas Salaata illaa wa hum kusaalaa wa laa yunfiqoona illaa wa hum kaarihoon
And nothing prevented their spending from being accepted from them except that they rejected Allah and His Messenger, and they do not come to the prayer except while they are lazy, and they do not spend except while they are unwilling.
Falaa tu'jibka amwaaluhum wa laaa awlaaduhum; innamaa yureedul laahu liyu'az zibahum bihaa fil hayaatid dunyaa wa tazhaqa anfusuhum wa hum kaafiroon
So let neither their wealth nor their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them with it in the life of this world, and that their souls should depart while they are disbelievers.
Wa yahlifoona billaahi innnahum laminkum wa maa hum minkum wa laakinnahum qawmuny yafraqoon
And they swear by Allah that they are of you, and they are not of you, but they are a people who are afraid.
Law yajidoona malja'an aw maghaaraatin aw mudda khalal lawallaw ilaihi wa hum yajmahoon
If they could find a shelter or caves or a place to enter, they would turn to it and bolt.
Wa minhum mai yalmizuka fis sadaqaati fa-in u'too minhaa radoo wa illam yu'taw minhaaa izaa hum yaskhatoon
And among them is one who criticizes you concerning the charity. If they are given from it they are pleased, and if they are not given from it they are angry.
Wa law annahum radoo maaa aataahumul laahu wa Rasooluhoo wa qaaloo hasbunal laahu wayu'teenallaahu min fadlihee wa Rasooluhooo innaaa ilallaahi raaghiboon
And if only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger gave them and said, Allah is enough for us, Allah will give us of His bounty, and His Messenger, we turn to Allah in hope.
Innamas sadaqaatu lilfuqaraaa'i walmasaakeeni wal 'aamileena 'alaihaa wal mu'al lafati quloobuhum wa fir riqaabi walghaarimeena wa fee sabeelil laahi wabnis sabeeli fareedatam minal laah; wal laahu 'Aleemun Hakeem
The charity is only for the poor and the needy, and those working on it, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for freeing necks, and for the debtors, and in the way of Allah, and for the traveler. An obligation from Allah. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Wa minhumul lazeena yu'zoonan nabiyya wa yaqooloona huwa uzun; qul uzunu khairil lakum yu'minu billaahi wa yu'minu lilmu mi neena wa rahmatul lillazeena aamanoo minkum; wallazeena yu'zoona Rasoolal laahi lahum 'azaabun aleem
And among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, he is an ear. Say, an ear of good for you. He believes in Allah and trusts the believers, and is a mercy to those of you who believed. And those who hurt the Messenger of Allah will have a painful punishment.
Yahlifoona billaahi lakum liyurdookum wallaahu wa Rasooluhoo ahaqqu ai yurdoohu in kaanoo mu'mineen
They swear to you by Allah to please you, while Allah and His Messenger have more right that they should please Him, if they are believers.
Alam ya'lamooo annahoo mai yuhaadidillaaha wa Rasoolahoo faanna lahoo Naara jahannama khaalidan feehaa; zaalikal khizyul 'Azeem
Did they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger, for him is the fire of Hell, remaining in it. That is the great disgrace.
Yahzarul munaafiqoona an tunaz zala 'alaihim Sooratun tunabbi 'uhum bimaa feequloobihim; qulistahzi'oo innal laaha mukhrijum maa tahzaroon
The hypocrites are wary that a chapter will be sent down about them telling them what is in their hearts. Say, mock. Allah will bring out what you are wary of.
Wala'in sa altahum layaqoolunna innamaa kunnaa nakhoodu wa nal'ab; qul abillaahi wa 'Aayaatihee wa Rasoolihee kuntum tastahzi'oon
And if you ask them, they will say, we were only talking idly and playing. Say, was it at Allah and His signs and His Messenger that you were mocking.
Laa ta'taziroo qad kafartum ba'da eemaanikum; in na'fu 'an taaa'ifatim minkum nu'az zib taaa'ifatam bi annahum kaanoo mujrimeen
Do not make excuses. You have disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon one group of you, We will punish another group because they were criminals.
Almunaafiqoona wal munaafiqaatu ba'duhum mim ba'd; yaamuroona bilmunkari wa yanhawna 'anil ma'roofi wa yaqbidoona aidiyahum; nasul laaha fanasiyahum; innal munaafiqeena humul faasiqoon
The hypocrite men and the hypocrite women are of one another. They order what is wrong and forbid what is right, and they hold back their hands. They forgot Allah, so He forgot them. The hypocrites are the defiantly disobedient.
Allah has promised the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, remaining in it. It is enough for them. And Allah has cursed them. And for them is a lasting punishment.
Kallazeena min qablikum kaanoo ashadda minkum quwwatanw wa aksara amwaalanw wa awlaadan fastamta'oo bikhalaaqihim fastamta'tum bikhalaaqikum kamas tamta'al lazeena min qablikum bikhalaa qihim wa khudtum kallazee khaadooo; ulaaa'ika habitat a'maaluhum fid dunyaa wal Aakhirati wa ulaaa'ika humul khaasiroon
Like those before you. They were stronger than you in power and greater in wealth and children. They enjoyed their share, and you have enjoyed your share as those before you enjoyed theirs, and you talked idly as they talked. Those are the ones whose deeds have collapsed in this world and the Hereafter. And those are the losers.

Has the news of those before them not reached them, the people of Nuh, and Ad, and Thamud, and the people of Ibrahim, and the companions of Madyan, and the overturned towns. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. Allah was not going to wrong them, but they were wronging themselves.

And the believing men and the believing women are allies of one another. They order what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they establish the prayer, and they give the zakah, and they obey Allah and His Messenger. Those, Allah will have mercy on them. Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Allah has promised the believing men and the believing women gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, remaining in them, and good dwellings in gardens of everlasting stay. And approval from Allah is greater. That is the great triumph.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
The Test Nobody Volunteered For.
Tabuk was the hardest call the community ever received. Distance measured in weeks, heat at its worst, harvest ready to be brought in, and an enemy nobody had beaten. Every condition that lets a man tell himself no was present at once.
Verse 38 opens with a physical description rather than an accusation. You sink heavily toward the ground. The word is used of a body that will not lift. Then the question underneath it. Are you satisfied with the life of this world instead of the Hereafter.
What follows is the most sustained portrait of hypocrisy in the Quran, and it is built almost entirely out of ordinary behavior. Asking for an exemption with a religious reason attached. Swearing an oath to smooth a room. Feeling relief when someone else’s plan fails. Complaining about how the money was handed out. Praying, but late and heavily. Giving, but resenting it.
The passage closes with two verses that mirror each other word for word, one describing the hypocrites and one describing the believers, with the same grammar and the inverse content. Read them side by side. That comparison is the whole point of the section.
Verses 38 to 49
Light or Heavy.
Verse 39 states the cost of sitting out and then removes any sense that Allah needs the participation. He will replace you with a people other than you, and you will not harm Him in anything. The opportunity is the favor. Losing it is the loss.
Verse 40 answers the anxiety directly. If you do not support him, Allah has already supported him, and the proof offered is the cave. Two men, no army, pursuit at the entrance, and the sentence recorded for all time is do not grieve, Allah is with us. That was the lowest point of the mission by any measurement available at the time. It is cited here as evidence of sufficiency.
Verse 41 is the whole instruction in three words. March out, light or heavy. Light and heavy have been read as young and old, poor and rich, unencumbered and burdened, eager and reluctant. The construction covers all of them because it names no exception. It does not ask for the readiness to be there first.
Verse 43 is the most striking correction in the Quran. May Allah pardon you. Why did you give them permission. The pardon arrives before the reproach, in the same breath, so the man being corrected never spends a moment uncertain of his standing. And the thing he is corrected for is being too accommodating. He excused men who wanted excusing, and by doing so he lost the information the situation was designed to produce.
Verse 47 supplies the mercy hidden inside their absence. Had they gone out among you, they would have added nothing except ruin, rushing between you looking for a crack. Then the line that should stop any reader: and among you are men who listen to them. The danger was never the hypocrites alone. It was the audience they had.
Verse 49 catches the technique exactly. Give me permission and do not put me to trial. He does not say he is afraid. He frames staying home as spiritual caution. The answer is one clause long. They have already fallen into the trial.
Verses 50 to 60
The Man Who Criticized the Distribution.
Verse 50 describes a specific kind of heart. Good news about someone else lands as an injury, and bad news lands as vindication. We took our precaution before. There is real pleasure in having been right about a thing going badly, and this verse names it without softening.
Verse 51 is the reply and it is given to the Prophet, peace be upon him, to say out loud. Nothing will strike us except what Allah has written for us. Not a claim that nothing bad will happen. A claim about who is writing.
Verse 52 is one of the most confident sentences in the Book. Are you waiting for anything to happen to us except one of the two best outcomes. Victory or martyrdom. There is no third branch where a believer loses, which is why the position cannot be attacked from the outside.
Verses 53 and 54 explain why some spending is refused, and the reasons are behavioral. They do not come to the prayer except while they are lazy, and they do not spend except while they are unwilling. The prayer happens. The money moves. And neither is accepted, because the state the act is performed in is part of the act.
Then verse 58, and it is worth slowing down here. Among them is one who criticizes you concerning the charity. If they are given from it they are pleased, and if not they are angry. A complaint dressed as a principle, with the personal share sitting underneath it, exposed by the fact that it evaporates the moment he is paid.
And the response to that complaint is verse 60, which fixes eight categories of recipient permanently and closes with “an obligation from Allah.” The objection produced legislation. Nobody would ever again have to argue about it in a room, because the list was taken out of human hands entirely.
Verses 61 to 72
Two Communities, Same Sentence Structure.
Verse 61 records an insult and then keeps it. They said he is an ear, meaning he listens to everyone and believes what he is told. The reply does not deny the description. An ear of good for you. He believes in Allah and trusts the believers. What they identified as a weakness is restated as the mercy they are personally living inside.
Verse 64 catches them at their most exposed. The hypocrites are wary that a chapter will be sent down telling them what is in their hearts. They were not afraid of being caught doing something. They were afraid of being read.
Verse 65 is the excuse, and it is the excuse people still use. We were only talking idly and playing. It was a joke. The answer refuses the frame rather than the tone. Was it at Allah and His signs and His Messenger that you were mocking.
Now put verse 67 and verse 71 next to each other, because they are built to be read that way.
The hypocrite men and the hypocrite women are of one another. They order what is wrong and forbid what is right, and they hold back their hands. They forgot Allah, so He forgot them.
The believing men and the believing women are allies of one another. They order what is right and forbid what is wrong, and they establish the prayer, and they give the zakah, and they obey Allah and His Messenger. Those, Allah will have mercy on them.
Same structure, inverted at every position. The first group is described as being of one another, the second as allies of one another, which is a stronger word carrying protection. The first holds back its hands, which is the closed fist. The second establishes the prayer and gives the zakah, which is the open one. And the closing clause of each is the exact consequence of its opening one.
Verse 69 then turns the address around, from them to us. You have enjoyed your share as those before you enjoyed theirs, and you talked idly as they talked. Whole civilizations went down doing exactly what an ordinary comfortable person does on an ordinary day.
And verse 72 ends the section on the largest thing in it. Gardens, rivers, permanent dwellings, all of it listed, and then approval from Allah is greater. Everything material named first, and then outranked in five words.
Structural Summary
Verses Thirty-Eight to Seventy-Two. Light or Heavy.
A body that will not lift, and the question underneath it. Two men in a cave offered as proof of sufficiency. A command with no exemption written into it. A pardon delivered before the reproach. Excuses with religious language attached. A complaint about the distribution that produced permanent law. An insult accepted and returned as a description of mercy. And two communities given the same sentence structure with every term reversed.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 41. The verse says light or heavy, with no waiting period for readiness. Name the one obligation you have been postponing until conditions improve. Do the first physical step of it today, in whatever condition you are in.
Verse 49. The verse catches an excuse with religious wording on it. Listen for your own version this week, the one that sounds like caution and functions like avoidance. Say the real reason out loud to yourself once.
Verses 67 and 71. They differ at one visible point: the closed hand and the open one. Give something away this week that you can feel leaving. Not the surplus.
