(Pray · The words)
الدُّعَاءُ بَعْدَ الْأَذَان
The Dua After the Adhan
Said by the one who hears the call to prayer, once it ends. The Arabic, the transliteration and the English, with audio.
Allahumma Rabba haadhihid da'watit taammah, was salaatil qaa'imah, aati Muhammadanil waseelata wal fadeelah, wab'athhu maqaaman mahmoodanil ladhee wa'adtah
O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad the intercession and favor, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him
Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: whoever says this when he hears the call, my intercession will be his on the Day of Resurrection.
Al-wasilah is a station in Paradise. Al-maqam al-mahmud is the praised station Allah promised His Messenger ﷺ. You ask Allah to give him what was promised, and his intercession is promised to you.
✦
When to say it
When the caller finishes the Adhan, before the Iqamah. The full call, line by line, is in the Dhuhr guide.
✦
What it means
- Allahumma Rabba: O Allah, Lord of
- haadhihid da'watit taammah: this perfect call. The Adhan is complete: it calls to Allah alone and to the prayer.
- was salaatil qaa'imah: and the prayer about to be established.
- aati Muhammadanil waseelah: grant Muhammad al-wasilah. He ﷺ explained it himself: a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of the servants of Allah, and I hope that I am he.
- wal fadeelah: and the distinction, a rank of honor above the rest of creation.
- wab'athhu maqaaman mahmoodan: and raise him to a praised station. Allah promised it to him in the Quran (Al-Isra 17:79).
- alladhee wa'adtah: which You promised him.
✦
Why it matters
The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever says this when he hears the call, my intercession will be his on the Day of Resurrection.
He also taught the whole moment: when you hear the caller, repeat what he says. Then send blessings on him, for whoever sends one blessing on him receives ten from Allah. Then ask Allah to give him al-wasilah, and his intercession is assured for you.
Sahih Muslim 384 · Quran 17:79
Then stay with it. The supplication made between the Adhan and the Iqamah is not turned back. You ask for him first, then ask for yourself in the hour when asking is answered.
