صَلَاةُ الْعِشَاء

Isha: The Night Prayer

Form4 rakatAloud then silentAll five prayers

NoteA sound mainstream Sunni method. Schools differ in small details. This teaches, it does not rule.

How this prayer differs

Isha is four fard rakat. The fard are the obligatory units of the prayer.

The first two rakat are recited aloud, the last two silently. Isha shares the four-rakat count of Dhuhr and Asr, but opens aloud like Maghrib and Fajr.

The Adhan is the standard call, with no dawn line. The first two rakat carry a surah after Al-Fatiha, the final two carry Al-Fatiha alone.

There are two sittings. A middle sitting after the second rakat, called the first Tashahhud, and the final sitting after the fourth.

Isha and Fajr are the heaviest prayers upon the heedless and the most rewarded in congregation. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said that praying Isha in congregation is as standing half the night.
