The Strong Man

Power is access. Access is the test. Restraint is the higher form of power, and the only kind that compounds.

The man with options

You built something. Maybe it is money. Maybe it is a body you earned in the gym at five in the morning for years. Maybe it is a name, a following, a business, a seat at a table where decisions get made. However you got there, a room changes when you walk into it now.

And the messages come. The look that lasts a second too long. The woman at the event who already knows who you are. The late call that starts about business. The hotel in another city where nobody knows your wife. A broke man with no name gets tempted too, but his options are few. Yours grow with everything you build.

That is what nobody tells the successful brother. Success is not the reward that comes after the test. Success is the test. Here is the whole of it, in four lines:

  1. Power is access.
  2. Access is the test.
  3. Restraint is the higher form of power.
  4. It is the only kind that compounds: in his marriage, his name, his children, his peace and his akhirah.

Every rung you climb hands you more access, and access is exactly what Allah is watching.

The Prophet ﷺ said: the world is sweet and green, and Allah is placing you in it to see how you act. So beware the world, and beware women, for the first trial of the Children of Israel was in women. And he said: I have not left behind me a trial more harmful to men than women.

Sahih Muslim 2742 · Sahih al-Bukhari 5096

He said this to men, out of mercy. He did not say women are evil. He named the place where men break. A general who knows where the wall is weakest does not insult the wall. He guards it.

✦

What he called strong

The word he used for the strong man was the wrestler, the one who puts other men on the ground. Then he turned the picture over. The strong man is not the one who throws others down. The strong man is the one who controls himself when he is angry.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6114

He said it about anger. I read desire into it too, because it is the same muscle. Anger says: hit him. Desire says: take her. Both are the self demanding to be obeyed right now. The man who can hold his hand when he is furious and hold himself when he is tempted is the strongest man in any room, whatever he lifts.

Allah does not pretend the pull is small. He named it, and He put women first in the list.

Zuyyina lin-nasi hubbush-shahawati minan-nisa'i wal-banina wal-qanatiril-muqantarati minadh-dhahabi wal-fiddati wal-khaylil-musawwamati wal-an'ami wal-harth, dhalika mata'ul-hayatid-dunya, wallahu 'indahu husnul-ma'ab

Made beautiful for people is the love of what they desire: women and sons, heaped-up hoards of gold and silver, fine branded horses, cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of the life of this world, and with Allah is the best return. (Surah Aal Imran 3:14)

Women, sons, gold, horses, land. Read that list again. It is the life of a successful man. Allah is not condemning the list. He is telling you the list was made beautiful on purpose, so it would test you. A man who says he does not feel the pull is either lying or not paying attention. Feeling it is human. What you do next is the measure of the man.

Wallahu yuridu an yatuba 'alaykum, wa yuridul-ladhina yattabi'unash-shahawati an tamilu maylan 'azima. Yuridullahu an yukhaffifa 'ankum, wa khuliqal-insanu da'ifa

Allah wants to turn to you in mercy, and those who follow their desires want you to swerve far away. Allah wants to lighten your burden, for man was created weak. (Surah An-Nisa 4:27 to 28)

Created weak. That is not an insult. It is the honest starting point. The strong man does not begin by believing he is unbreakable. He begins by knowing exactly where he breaks, and he builds his life around that knowledge.

The locked door

If you want to see a strong man face temptation, look at Yusuf ʿalayhi as-salām. Young. So beautiful that the women of the city cut their hands when they saw him. A servant in the house of one of the most powerful men in Egypt, far from his father, far from anyone who knew his name. No witness. No consequence anyone could see.

And the woman in whose house he was sought to seduce him. She locked the doors and said: come to me. He said: I seek refuge in Allah. He is my master, who has made my stay good. Wrongdoers never succeed. (Surah Yusuf 12:23)

She locked the doors. Plural. Every exit closed. The situation was built for him to fall. And the first thing out of his mouth was not an argument, not a negotiation with himself, not "maybe just this once." It was Allah. Ma'adhallah. I seek refuge in Allah.

Then Allah tells us something that should comfort every brother reading this.

Wa laqad hammat bihi wa hamma biha lawla an ra'a burhana rabbih, kadhalika li-nasrifa 'anhus-su'a wal-fahsha', innahu min 'ibadinal-mukhlasin

She was set on him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. So it was, that We might turn evil and indecency away from him. He was one of Our chosen servants. (Surah Yusuf 12:24)

He would have inclined to her. Yusuf ʿalayhi as-salām was a man. The pull was real. Allah did not make a statue and call it chaste. He showed us a man who felt it and turned anyway, and then He told us who did the turning: that We might turn evil away from him. Strength against temptation is not something you manufacture alone. It is given to the one who runs toward Allah.

And he did run. Literally. They raced to the door (12:25). He did not stand in the room trying to be strong. He left the room. That is the first lesson of the strong man: you do not wrestle temptation where it lives. You get out.

When she gathered the women of the city and threatened him openly, he did not trust his own strength. He prayed.

Qala rabbis-sijnu ahabbu ilayya mimma yad'unani ilayh, wa illa tasrif 'anni kaydahunna asbu ilayhinna wa akun minal-jahilin

He said: My Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they call me to. And if You do not turn their scheming away from me, I will incline toward them and be one of the ignorant. (Surah Yusuf 12:33)

Prison is dearer to me. A man chose a cell over a bed, because he knew which one was freedom. And look at his honesty: if You do not turn it from me, I will incline. The strongest man in the story admits he cannot do it alone. And the surah keeps the rule for every one of us: I do not claim my soul is innocent. The soul commands evil, except where my Lord has mercy (12:53).

Now watch where the story goes. The man who would not take what was not his was taken out of prison and put over the storehouses of Egypt.

And so We established Yusuf in the land, to settle in it wherever he wished. We bring Our mercy to whom We will, and We do not let the reward of those who do good be lost. (Surah Yusuf 12:56)

He refused the master's wife, and he ended up running the country. That is the pattern. Restraint came before rule. Allah does not hand a nation's storehouses to a man who cannot guard himself in a locked room.

✦

The man in the shade

The Prophet ﷺ named seven people Allah will shade on the Day when there is no shade but His. One of them is a man invited by a woman of position and beauty, who says: I fear Allah.

Sahih al-Bukhari 660

Read the description carefully. Not just beauty. Position. Mansib, status. That is the temptation of the successful man exactly. It is not a stranger on the street. It is the woman who matches his level, who moves in his circles, who could open doors for him, who makes falling feel like it fits. And the man who turns her down with three words, I fear Allah, gets a place in the shade when the sun is a mile away.

Then there is the man in the cave. The Prophet ﷺ told of three men from before us who were trapped when a rock sealed the mouth of a cave. Each called on Allah by a deed he had done only for Him. One said: O Allah, I loved my cousin more than any man loves a woman. In a year of hardship she came to me in need, and I gave her a hundred dinars on the condition that she give herself to me. When I was over her, she said: fear Allah, and do not break the seal except by its right. So I got up and left her, and I left the money. O Allah, if I did that for Your sake, open this for us. And the rock moved.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3465

He had everything a strong man has in that moment. Money. Leverage. Opportunity. Nobody watching. He was already there. And he stood up. Years later, with his life sealed behind a stone, that one act of restraint was the deed he reached for. It moved a rock.

Every time you get up and walk away, you are putting something in the bank. You will not see the balance for a long time. But a day is coming when you will need it, and it will be there.

✦

The power that compounds

The world says a strong man takes what he wants. Some brothers answer with the opposite mistake: a righteous man should feel nothing, and if you feel the pull you must be a hypocrite. Hold both claims up and both fail. The first makes a man a servant of his appetite. The second makes him ashamed of being a man. The truth sits above them both: a man feels the full weight of desire, and he governs it. That governing is the higher form of power.

It starts with command. The man who cannot say no to himself is taking orders. He just cannot see who is giving them. Every time desire says now and he obeys, he trains himself to obey. Every time it says now and he says no, he trains himself to lead.

Here is the difference between the two kinds of power. The power of taking is spent the moment you use it. The night ends, the thrill is gone, and you are left with less than you had: less trust, less peace, a heavier account. The power of restraint is never spent. Every time you hold, it is banked, and it grows. Look at where it grows.

His marriage. A wife who never has to wonder where her husband is gives him something no money buys: a home he can rest in. Every door he does not open outside is a wall he builds around his own house. The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever guarantees me what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I guarantee him Paradise. The tongue and the private parts. Guard those two and almost everything else in a man's life stays clean.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6474

His name. A name takes forty years to build and one week to lose. We have all watched powerful men in business and sport lose everything they built, not because they were weak at their work, but because they were weak in one room. A hidden life is a leash someone else is holding: the woman, her friends, a screenshot, a rival. The man with nothing to hide cannot be blackmailed and cannot be cornered. His word is worth the same in every room, so every year it is worth more.

His children. Your son is learning what a man is by watching you, and your daughter is learning what to expect from one. They will not remember your speeches. They will remember whether their father could be trusted. A man who holds himself is building something in them that will outlive him, and the Prophet ﷺ named a righteous child who prays for his parents among the deeds that keep running after death (Sahih Muslim 1631).

His peace. Chasing costs hours. The phone at midnight, the planning, the covering, the guilt afterward, the energy spent managing two lives. Every one of those hours was taken from your prayer, your children, your training and your work. Restraint gives the time back, and with it the sleep of a man with nothing to manage. A man who stops leaking is suddenly a man with surplus.

Sahih Muslim 1631

His akhirah. This is the one that outweighs the rest, and the one where the return never stops.

Wa amma man khafa maqama rabbihi wa nahan-nafsa 'anil-hawa, fa-innal-jannata hiyal-ma'wa

But as for the one who feared standing before his Lord and held his soul back from desire, Paradise will be his home. (Surah An-Nazi'at 79:40 to 41)

Held his soul back. Naha, he forbade it. The verse does not describe a man without desire. It describes a man who told his desire no, because he pictured himself standing in front of his Lord. The Prophet ﷺ put the whole thing in one line: the Fire is veiled with desires, and Paradise is veiled with hardships. What looks sweet at the door leads somewhere bitter. What looks hard at the door leads home.

Quran 79:40-41 · Sahih al-Bukhari 6487

✦

The open door

None of this is a call to become a monk. Islam does not ask a man to kill his desire. It asks him to point it. The Prophet ﷺ said: young men, whoever among you is able to marry, let him marry. And whoever cannot, let him fast, for it is a shield for him.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5065

And when the Companions heard that even a man's intimacy with his wife is charity, they asked: one of us fulfills his desire and gets a reward for it? He said: tell me, if he put it in the haram, would he not carry a sin? So when he puts it in the halal, he has a reward.

Sahih Muslim 1006

Same strength. Same drive. One door leads to sin and the other leads to reward. The strong man does not starve himself. He feeds the marriage. He brings his best to his own wife: his attention, his time, his gentleness, his desire. If your wife is getting your leftovers while the world gets your best, you are not a strong man. You are a distracted one. I wrote about what she is owed in Treat Her Well.

✦

The gaze is the gate

Qul lil-mu'minina yaghuddu min absarihim wa yahfazu furujahum, dhalika azka lahum, innallaha khabirun bima yasna'un

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Allah is fully aware of what they do. (Surah An-Nur 24:30)

Notice the order. The eyes first, then the private parts. Allah begins where it begins. Nobody falls into zina in a single step. It starts with a look you kept, then a message you answered, then a meeting you did not need. That is why Allah did not only forbid the act. He said: do not come near it (17:32). The road is forbidden, not only the destination.

Jarir ibn 'Abdullah asked the Prophet ﷺ about the sudden glance, the one you did not plan. He told him to turn his eyes away. And he told 'Ali: do not follow one look with another. The first is yours. The second is not.

Quran 17:32 · Sahih Muslim 2159 · Sunan Abi Dawud 2149 · Hasan (Al-Albani)

The first look happens. You are a man, the world is full of people, and the screen in your pocket pushes images at you all day. The first is not on you. The second one is a choice, and the strong man makes it in under a second. Eyes down. Thumb up. Gone.

And he does not put himself where the fall is easy. The Prophet ﷺ said no man is alone with a woman except that Shaytan is the third of them, and that no man should be alone with a woman unless a mahram is with her. Today that means the closed office, the hotel room meeting, the long ride, the private messages that would embarrass you if your wife read them. The strong man does not test himself in those places. He just does not go.

Jami at-Tirmidhi 2165 · Sahih (Darussalam) · Sahih al-Bukhari 5233

✦

If you have already fallen

Some brothers reading this are not standing at the door. They walked through it, maybe more than once. Shaytan's next move is to tell you that you are finished, that you might as well keep going because you are already that man.

You are not finished. Allah says: O My servants who have gone too far against yourselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Allah forgives all sins (39:53). Stop today. Turn to Him in private. Close the door you used. Do not announce what Allah covered. And then guard yourself harder than a man who never fell, because you know exactly where your wall is weak. I wrote for you in When You Feel Far from Allah.

Quran 39:53

✦

The drills

Strength is trained. Here is the program.

  1. Name Allah first. When the moment comes, say it out loud if you can: Ma'adhallah. Yusuf ʿalayhi as-salām answered with Allah before he answered with an argument (12:23).
  2. Leave the room. Do not stay and try to be strong. He raced for the door (12:25).
  3. Turn the eye on the first glance. The second look is not yours (Sahih Muslim 2159, Sunan Abi Dawud 2149).
  4. Never be alone with a woman you are not married to. No closed office, no hotel room meeting, no late ride (Sahih al-Bukhari 5233).
  5. Audit the phone tonight. Unfollow, mute and delete every door you keep open on it. A temptation you have to go looking for is weaker than one that finds you.
  6. Marry, or fast. Marriage if you are able, fasting as a shield if you are not (Sahih al-Bukhari 5065).
  7. Give your wife your best, not what is left. Your time, your attention, your desire (Sahih Muslim 1006).
  8. Keep close to men who fear Allah. The masjid, a circle, brothers who would notice if you started drifting.
  9. Guard the tongue as well. The flirting message and the joke that opens a door are where it begins (Sahih al-Bukhari 6474).
  10. Make the prayer of Yusuf your own: My Lord, if You do not turn it away from me, I will incline (12:33). Ask for help every day. The strongest man in the story did.

The quiet work

Nobody will clap for the door you did not open. There is no post for it. No one will know about the message you deleted, the invitation you declined, the hotel bar you walked past, or the look you broke off. That is the point. The strength that matters most is the strength no one sees except Allah.

But it shows. It shows in a marriage that holds. In children who trust their father. In a name that stays clean for forty years. In a man who looks other men in the eye because he has nothing to hide. In the shade on a Day when there is no other shade.

Power is access. Access is the test. Restraint is the higher form of power, and it is the only kind that compounds: in your marriage, your name, your children, your peace and your akhirah. Any man can take. It takes a strong one to hold. Yusuf ʿalayhi as-salām held in a locked room, and Allah gave him a kingdom. Hold, and see what He gives you.

Ma'adhallah. That is what a strong man says.
