The Surah · Verses 54 to 109
Wa law anna likulli nafsin zalamat maa fil ardi laftadat bih; wa asarrun nadaamata lammaa ra awul 'azaab, wa qudiya bainahum bilqist; wa hum laa yuzlamoon
And if every soul that wronged owned everything on earth, it would offer all of it as ransom. They will hide their regret when they see the punishment. Judgment is passed between them in justice, and they are not wronged.
Take note. To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Take note. The promise of Allah is true, but most of them do not know.
Huwa yuhyee wa yumeetu wailaihi turja'oon
He gives life and He gives death, and to Him you are returned.
Yaaa aiyuhan naasu qad jaaa'atkum maw 'izatum mir Rabbikum wa shifaaa'ul limaa fis sudoori wa hudanw wa rahmatul lilmu'mineen
Mankind, an admonition has come to you from your Lord, and a healing for what is in the chests, and guidance and mercy for the believers.
Qul bifadlil laahi wa birahmatihii fabizaalika falyaf rahoo huwa khairum mimmaa yajma'oon
Say, in the bounty of Allah and in His mercy, in that let them rejoice. It is better than what they accumulate.
Qul ara'aitum maaa anzalal laahu lakum mir rizqin faja'altum minhu haraamanw wa halaalan qul aaallaahu azina lakum am 'alal laahi taftaroon
Say, have you considered the provision Allah sent down for you, and you made some of it forbidden and some of it lawful. Say, did Allah permit you, or are you inventing a lie against Allah.
Wa maa zannul lazeena yaftaroona 'alal laahil kaziba Yawmal Qiyaamah; innal laaha lazoo fadlin 'alan naasi wa laakinna aksarahum laa yashkuroon
And what will they assume, those who invent lies against Allah, on the Day of Standing. Allah is the holder of bounty toward people, but most of them are not grateful.
You are in no situation, and you recite no portion of the Quran, and you people do no work, except that We are witness over you while you are absorbed in it. Not the weight of an atom escapes your Lord, on the earth or in the sky, nor anything smaller than that or larger, except that it is in a clear record.
Alaa innaa awliyaaa'al laahi laa khawfun 'alaihim wa laa hum yahzanoon
Take note. The allies of Allah have no fear upon them, nor do they grieve.
Allazeena aamanoo wa kaanoo yattaqoon
Those who believed and were conscious of Allah.
Lahumul bushraa filha yaatid dunyaa wa fil Aakhirah; laa tabdeela likalimaatil laah; zaalika huwal fawzul 'azeem
For them is good news in the life of this world and in the Hereafter. There is no changing the words of Allah. That is the great triumph.
Wa laa yahzunka qawluhum; innal 'izzata lillaahi jamee'aa; Huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem
And let their speech not grieve you. All honor belongs to Allah. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Alaaa inna lillaahi man fis samaawaati wa man fil ard; wa maa yattabi'ul lazeena yad'oona min doonil laahi shurakaaa'; iny yattabi'oona illaz zannna wa in hum illaa yakhrusoon
Take note. To Allah belongs whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth. And those who call on partners besides Allah do not follow them. They follow only conjecture, and they only guess.
Huwal lazee ja'ala lakumul laila litaskunoo feehi wannahaara mubsiraa; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawmai yasma'oon
He is the One who made the night for you to rest in it, and the day giving sight. In that are signs for a people who listen.
Qaalut takhazal laahu waladan Subhaanahoo Huwal Ghaniyyu lahoo maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ard; in 'indakum min sultaanim bihaazaaa; ataqooloona 'alal laahi maa laa ta'lamoon
They said, Allah has taken a son. Glory be to Him. He is the Free of need. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. You have no authority for this. Do you say about Allah what you do not know.
Qul innal lazeena yaftaroona 'alal laahil kaziba laa yuflihoon
Say, those who invent lies against Allah will not succeed.
Mataa'un fiddunyaa summa ilainaa marji'uhum summa nuzeequhumul 'azaabash shadeeda bimaa kaanoo yakkfuroon
An enjoyment in this world, then to Us is their return, then We make them taste the severe punishment for their rejection.
Watlu 'alaihim naba-a-Noohin iz qaala liqawmihee yaa qawmi in kaana kabura 'alaikum maqaamee wa tazkeeree bi Aayaatil laahi fa'alal laahi tawakkaltu fa ajmi'ooo amrakum wa shurakaaa'akum summa laa yakun amrukum 'alaikum ghummatan summmaq dooo ilaiya wa laa tunziroon
And recite to them the account of Nuh, when he said to his people, my people, if my standing among you and my reminder of the signs of Allah is heavy on you, then upon Allah I rely. Gather your affair and your partners, then let your affair not be a burden of doubt on you, then carry it out against me and give me no delay.
Fa in tawallaitum famaa sa altukum min ajrin in ajriya illaa 'alal laahi wa umirtu an akoona minal muslimeen
And if you turn away, I asked you for no payment. My payment is only upon Allah, and I was commanded to be of those who submit.
Fakazzaboohu fanajjainaahu wa mamm'ahoo fil fulki wa ja'alnaahum khalaaa'ifa wa aghraqnal lazeena kazzaboo bi aayaatinaa fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul munzareen
They called him a liar, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We made them successors, and We drowned those who called Our signs a lie. So look how the end was for those who were warned.
Summma ba'asnaa mim ba'dihee Rusulan ilaa qawmihim fajaaa'oohum bilbaiyinaati famaa kaanoo liyu'minoo bimaa kazzaboo bihee min qabl; kazaalika natba'u 'alaa quloobil mu'tadeen
Then after him We sent messengers to their people, and they came to them with clear proofs, but they would not believe in what they had already called a lie. In this way We seal the hearts of those who cross the limits.
Summa ba'asnaa mim ba'dihim Moosaa Wa Haaroona ilaa Fir'awna wa mala'ihee bi aayaatinaa fastakbaroo wa kaanoo qawmam mujrimeen
Then after them We sent Musa and Harun to Pharaoh and his assembly with Our signs, and they were arrogant, and they were a criminal people.
Falammaa jaaa'ahumul haqqu min 'indinaa qaalooo inna haazaa lasihrum mubeen
So when the truth came to them from Us, they said, this is clear magic.
Qaalaa Moosaaa ataqooloona lilhaqqi lammmaa jaaa'a kum asihrun haazaa wa laa yuflihus saabiroon
Musa said, do you say this about the truth when it has come to you. Is this magic. And the magicians do not succeed.
Qaaloo aji'tanaa litalfitanaa 'ammaa wajadnaa 'alaihi aabaaa'anaa wa takoona lakumal kibriyaaa'u fil ardi wa maa nahnu lakumaa bimu' mineen
They said, did you come to turn us away from what we found our fathers upon, so that greatness in the land becomes yours. We are not believers in the two of you.
Wa qaala Fir'awnu' toonee bikulli saahirin 'aleem
And Pharaoh said, bring me every learned magician.
Falammaa jaaa'assa haratu qaala lahum Moosaaa alqoo maaa antum mulqoon
So when the magicians came, Musa said to them, throw what you are going to throw.
Falammaaa alqaw qaala Moosaa maa ji'tum bihis sihru innal laaha sa yubtiluhoo innal laaha laa yuslihu 'amalal mufsideen
So when they threw, Musa said, what you have brought is magic. Allah will void it. Allah does not set right the work of the corrupters.
Wa yuhiqqul laahul haqqa bi Kalimaatihee wa law karihal mujrimoon
And Allah establishes the truth by His words, even if the criminals hate it.
Famaaa aamana li-Moosaaa illaa zurriyyatum min qawmihee 'alaa khawfim min Fir'awna wa mala'ihim ai yaftinahum; wa inna Fir'awna la'aalin fil ardi wa innahoo laminal musrifeen
And none believed in Musa except descendants from his people, in fear of Pharaoh and their assembly persecuting them. And Pharaoh was high in the land, and he was of those who cross every limit.
Wa qaala Moosaa yaa qawmi in kuntum aamantum billaahi fa'alaihi tawakkalooo in kuntum muslimeen
And Musa said, my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely on Him, if you are those who submit.
Faqaaloo 'alal laahi tawakkalnaa Rabbanaa laa taj'alnaa fitnatal lilqawmiz zaalimeen
So they said, upon Allah we rely. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people.
Wa najjinaa birahmatika minal qawmil kaafireen
And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.
Wa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaa wa akheehi an tabaw wa aa liqawmikuma bi Misra bu yootanw waj'aloo bu yootakum qiblatanw wa aqeemus Salaah; wa bashshiril mu'mineen
And We revealed to Musa and his brother, settle your people in houses in Egypt, and make your houses places of prayer, and establish the prayer. And give good news to the believers.
Wa qaala Mosaa Rabbanaaa innaka aataita Fir'awna wa mala ahoo zeenatanw wa amwaalan fil hayaatid dunyaa Rabbanaa liyudillo 'ansabeelika Rabbanat mis 'alaaa amwaalihim washdud 'alaa quloobihim falaa yu'minoo hatta yarawul 'azaabal aleem
And Musa said, our Lord, You gave Pharaoh and his assembly ornament and wealth in the life of this world. Our Lord, they use it to lead people away from Your path. Our Lord, wipe out their wealth and harden their hearts, so they do not believe until they see the painful punishment.
Qaala qad ujeebad da'watukumaa fastaqeemaa wa laa tattabi'aaanni sabeelal lazeena laaya'lamoon
He said, the call of you two has been answered, so stand straight, and do not follow the path of those who do not know.
Wa jaawaznaa bi Baneee Israaa'eelal bahra fa atba'ahum Fir'awnu wa junooduhoo baghyanw wa 'adwan hattaaa izaaa adrakahul gharaqu qaala aamantu annnahoo laaa ilaaha illal lazeee aamanat bihee Banooo Israaa'eela wa ana minal muslimeen
And We took the children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers followed them in oppression and hostility, until when the drowning reached him he said, I believe that there is no god except the One the children of Israel believe in, and I am of those who submit.
Aaal'aana wa qad 'asaita qablu wa kunta minal mufsideen
Now. And you disobeyed before, and you were of the corrupters.
Falyawma nunajjeeka bibadanika litakoona liman khalfaka Aayah; wa inna kaseeram minan naasi 'an aayaatinaa laghaafiloon
So today We save you in your body, so you may be a sign for those who come after you. And many of the people are heedless of Our signs.
Wa laqad bawwaanaa Baneee Israaa'eela mubawwa-a sidqinw wa razaqnaahum minnat taiyibaati famakh talafoo hattaa jaaa'ahmul 'ilm; inna Rabbaka yaqdee bainahum Yawmal Qiyaamati feemaa kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon
And We settled the children of Israel in a place of truth, and We provided them from the good things. They did not differ until the knowledge came to them. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Standing concerning what they used to differ in.
Fa in kunta fee shakkim mimmaaa anzalnaaa ilaika fas'alil lazeena yaqra'oonal Kitaaba min qablik; laqad jaaa'akal haqqu mir Rabbika falaa takoonanna minal mumtareen
And if you are in doubt about what We sent down to you, then ask those who read the Book before you. The truth has come to you from your Lord, so do not be of those who waver.
Wa laa takoonanna minal lazeena kazzaboo bi Aayaatil laahi fatakoona minal khaasireen
And do not be of those who called the signs of Allah a lie, or you will be of the losers.
Innal lazeena haqqat 'alaihim Kalimatu Rabbika laa yu'minoon
Those upon whom the word of your Lord has come true do not believe.
Wa law jaaa'at hum kullu Aayatin hattaa yarawul 'azaabal aleem
Even if every sign came to them, until they see the painful punishment.
Falaw laa kaanat qaryatun aamanat fanafa'ahaaa eemaanuhaaa illaa qawma Yoonusa lammaaa aamanoo kashafnaa 'anhum 'azaabal khizyi fil hayaatid dunyaa wa matta'naahum ilaa heen
If only there had been a town that believed and its belief benefited it, other than the people of Yunus. When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in the life of this world, and We let them enjoy for a time.
Wa law shaaa'a Rabbuka la aamana man fil ardi kulluhum jamee'aa; afa anta tukrihun naasa hattaa yakoonoo mu'mineen
And if your Lord had willed, everyone on earth would have believed, all of them together. Will you then compel people until they become believers.
And it is not for a soul to believe except by the permission of Allah. And He places defilement on those who do not use their reason.
Qulin zuroo maazaa fissamaawaati wal ard; wa maa tughnil Aayaatu wannuzuru 'an qawmil laa yu'minoon
Say, look at what is in the heavens and the earth. And the signs and the warnings are of no use to a people who do not believe.
Fahal yantaziroona illaa misla ayyaamil lazeena khalaw min qablihim; qul fantazirooo innee ma'akum minal muntazireen
So do they wait for anything but the like of the days of those who passed before them. Say, then wait. I am with you among those who wait.
Summma nunajjee Ruslanaa wallazeena aamanoo; kazaalika haqqan 'alainaa nunjil mu'mineen
Then We save Our messengers and those who believed. In this way, as a right upon Us, We save the believers.
Qul yaaa ayyuhan naasu in kuntum fee shakkkim min deenee falaa a'budul lazeena ta'budoona min doonil laahi wa laakin a'budul laahal lazee yatawaffaakum wa umirtu an akoona minal mu'mineen
Say, people, if you are in doubt about my religion, then I do not worship what you worship besides Allah, but I worship Allah who takes your souls, and I was commanded to be of the believers.
Wa an aqim wajhaka liddeeni Haneefanw wa laa takoonannna minal mushrikeen
And set your face to the religion, inclining to truth, and do not be of those who associate.
Wa laa tad'u min doonil laahi maa laa yanfa'uka wa laa yadurruka fa in fa'alta fa innaka izam minaz zaalimeen
And do not call besides Allah on what does not benefit you and does not harm you. If you do, then you are of the wrongdoers.
Wa iny yamsaskal laahu bidurrin falaa kaashifa lahoo illaa Huwa wa iny yuridka bikhairin falaa raaadda lifadlih; yuseebu bihee man yashaaa'u min 'ibaadih; wa huwal Ghafoorur Raheem
And if Allah touches you with harm, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He wants good for you, there is no repelling His bounty. He gives it to whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Qul yaaa aiyuhan naasu qad jaaa'akumul haqqu mir Rabbikum famanih tadaa fa innamaa yahtadee linafsihee wa man dalla fa innamaa yadillu 'alaihaa wa maaa ana 'alaikum biwakeel
Say, people, the truth has come to you from your Lord. Whoever is guided is guided for his own soul, and whoever strays only strays against it. And I am not a guardian over you.
Qattabi' maa yoohaaa ilaika wasbir hattaa yahkumal laah; wa Huwa khairul haakimeen
And follow what is revealed to you, and be patient until Allah judges. And He is the best of judges.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
The One Town That Turned in Time.
Part One ended with a man told to disclaim power over his own harm. Part Two opens with the ledger closed. Everything on earth offered as ransom, and refused. Regret hidden rather than spoken, because there is nothing left that speaking would buy.
Then the chapter turns and names what has already been sent. Verse 57 gives the revelation four descriptions in one line. An admonition. A healing for what is in the chests. Guidance. Mercy. The order matters. It corrects you first, then it treats the injury underneath the behavior, then it shows the road, then it carries you down it.
Verse 61 is the surveillance verse, and it is not a threat. You are in no situation, reciting nothing, doing no work, without Allah witnessing you while you are absorbed in it. The phrase for absorbed describes a person pouring themselves into something, too far in to notice they are watched. Not one atom on earth or in the sky is outside the record.
Then three messengers in sequence. Nuh, who tells his people to gather everything they have and use it against him. Musa, who watches magicians fall and a king drown mid sentence. And the people of Yunus, one town in the entire record that believed while there was still time to believe.
The chapter closes on the Prophet, peace be upon him, and it closes small. Follow what is revealed. Be patient until Allah judges.
Verses 54 to 70
A Healing for What Is in the Chests.
Verse 58 sits directly after the healing verse and tells you what to do with it. In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy, in that let them rejoice. It is better than what they accumulate. The verb is a command to be glad. The comparison is to what people gather, and gathering is the wider word. Wealth gathers. Reputation gathers. A record of achievements gathers. The verse does not say the gathered thing is worthless. It says the given thing is better.
Verse 59 catches a specific habit. Allah sent down provision, and people took it upon themselves to sort it into forbidden and permitted. The question that follows is one question with no third answer. Did Allah permit you, or are you inventing against Allah. Religion invented at the level of what is allowed and what is banned is still invention.
Verses 62 to 64 define the allies of Allah, and the definition arrives one verse after the claim. No fear upon them and no grief. Then, immediately, who they are. Those who believed and were conscious of Allah. No lineage, no station, no title. Two conditions, both available.
Verse 65 is addressed to a man being talked about. Let their speech not grieve you. The reason given is not that the speech is false. The reason is that all honor belongs to Allah, entirely, with none of it in the possession of the people speaking. What they are withholding from you was never theirs to withhold.
Verses 71 to 93
Gather Your Affair.
Nuh gets four verses and the first of them is one of the boldest speeches in the Quran. If my standing among you and my reminding you is heavy on you, then upon Allah I rely. Gather your affair. Gather your partners. Do not leave your plan half formed and full of doubt. Then carry it out against me and give me no delay. He invites the full weight of everything they have. He has no ship yet, no army, no protection. He has reliance, and he speaks from it as though it were a wall.
The pattern that follows is stated plainly in verse 74. Messengers came after him with clear proofs, and the people would not believe in what they had already called a lie. The rejection was decided before the evidence arrived. Evidence cannot correct a verdict that was reached without it.
Musa before Pharaoh runs the same shape. The truth arrives and is immediately renamed. This is clear magic. Verse 78 exposes the real objection under the accusation. Did you come to turn us away from what we found our fathers upon, and so that greatness in the land becomes yours. Inheritance and status, in one sentence. Nothing about whether it was true.
Verse 83 is the quiet number in this passage. None believed in Musa except descendants from his people, in fear. Not a nation. A handful, frightened. That was the beginning of it.
Then verse 90. Pharaoh, going under, produces the correct sentence. I believe that there is no god except the One the children of Israel believe in. The answer comes back in one word. Now. Belief offered at the moment the water closes is not belief, it is arithmetic. And verse 92 does something stranger than punishment. We save you in your body, so you may be a sign for those who come after you. The man who claimed to be a lord is preserved as an exhibit.
Verses 94 to 109
Would You Compel People.
Verse 98 is the exception the whole chapter is named around. If only there had been a town that believed and its belief benefited it, other than the people of Yunus. The construction admits one case. Every other community in the record left it too late. Yunus, peace be upon him, had already withdrawn from them when they turned. They believed with the punishment visible and not yet landed, and it was lifted off them.
Read alongside verse 90 the pair is exact. Pharaoh believed after the water had him and was refused. Nineveh believed before the sky fell and was spared. The difference is not the words. The difference is the minute.
Verse 99 removes the pressure that sits on anyone carrying a message. If your Lord had willed, everyone on earth would have believed, all of them together. Will you then compel people until they become believers. The question is rhetorical and the answer is no. Guidance was never assigned to you as an output you are responsible for producing.
Verse 107 states the mechanism directly. If Allah touches you with harm, no one removes it except Him. If He wants good for you, no one repels His bounty. Both directions closed to every other hand.
And the chapter ends on two verbs. Follow what is revealed to you, and be patient until Allah judges. One hundred and nine verses of argument, evidence, drowned kings and spared cities, resolving into an instruction a person can carry out today.
Structural Summary
Verses Fifty-Four to One Hundred and Nine. The One Town That Turned in Time.
A closed ledger. Four names for what was sent down. A witness over every absorbed moment. Nuh inviting the worst his people can gather. Musa watching the truth outlast the magic. Pharaoh believing one minute late. Nineveh believing in time. And a closing instruction with nothing in it about outcomes.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 57. The revelation is called a healing for what is in the chests. Name one thing in your chest right now that you have been treating as a character trait rather than an injury. Read the passage that speaks to it before you read anything else this week.
Verse 61. Allah witnesses you while you are absorbed. Pick the activity you disappear into most completely. Before you start it next time, say bismillah out loud. The point is to enter it awake.
Verse 99. The verse asks whether you would compel people to believe. Identify one person you have been arguing into faith or into change. Stop making the case. Continue making dua for them. The result was never yours to produce.
