The Surah · Verses 1 to 53

Alif-Laaam-Raa; tilka Aayaatul Kitaabil Hakeem

Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book of wisdom.

A kaana linnaasi 'aaban an awhainaaa ilaa rajulim minhum an anzirin naasa wa bashshiril lazeena aamanoo anna lahum qadama sidqin 'inda Rabbihim; qaalal kaafiroona inna haaza lasaahirum mubeen

Is it a wonder to people that We revealed to a man from among them: warn the people, and give good news to those who believe that they have a sure footing with their Lord? The disbelievers said, "This is clearly a magician."

Inna Rabbakumul laahul lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda fee sittati aiyaamin summas tawaa 'alal 'Arshi yudabbirul amra maa min shafee'in illaa mim ba'di iznih; zalikumul laahu Rabbukum fa'budooh; afalaa tazakkaroon

Your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself above the Throne, directing the affair. There is no intercessor except after His permission. That is Allah, your Lord, so worship Him. Will you not remember?

Ilaihi marji'ukum jamee 'anw wa'dal laahi haqqaa; innahoo yabda'ul khalqa summa yu'eeduhoo liyajziyal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati bilqist; wallazeena kafaroo lahum sharaabum min hamee minw wa 'azaabun aleemum bimaa kaanoo yakfuroon

To Him is the return of all of you. The promise of Allah is true. He begins the creation, then repeats it, so that He may reward with justice those who believed and did righteous deeds. And those who disbelieved will have a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment for what they used to deny.

Huwal lazee ja'alash shamsa diyaaa'anw walqamara nooranw wa qaddarahoo manaaz zila lita'lamoo 'adadas sineena walhisaab; maa khalaqal laahu zaalika illa bilhaqq; yufassilul aayaati liqawminw ya'lamoon

He is the One who made the sun a radiance and the moon a light, and determined for it phases, so that you may know the number of years and the reckoning. Allah did not create that except in truth. He explains the verses in detail for a people who know.

Inna fikh tilaafil laili wannahaari wa maa khalaqal laahu fis samaawaati wal ardi la Aayaatil liqawminy yattaqoon

In the alternation of the night and the day, and in what Allah created in the heavens and the earth, are signs for a people who are mindful.

Innal lazeena laa yarjoona liqaaa'anaa wa radoo bilhayaatid dunyaa watma annoo bihaa wallazeena hum 'an Aayaatinaa ghaafiloon

Those who do not expect the meeting with Us, and are content with the life of this world and are at rest in it, and those who are heedless of Our signs,

Ulaaa'ika maawaahumun Naaru bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon

their refuge is the Fire, for what they used to earn.

Innal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati yahdeehim Rabbuhum bi eemaanihim tajree min tahtihimul anhaaru fee jannaatin Na'eem

Those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will guide them by their faith. Rivers will flow beneath them in the gardens of delight.

Da'waahum feehaa Subbaanakal laahumma wa tahiyyatuhum feehaa salaam; wa aakhiru da'waahum anil hamdu lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen

Their call in it will be, "Glory to You, Allah," and their greeting in it is peace, and the last of their call is, "Praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds."

Wa law yu'aijilul laahu linnaasish sharras ti'jaalahum bilkhairi laqudiya ilaihim ajaluhum fanazarul lazeena laa yarjoona liqaaa'anna fee tughyaanihim ya'mahoon

If Allah hastened evil for people the way they seek to hasten good, their term would have been decided for them. So We leave those who do not expect the meeting with Us wandering blindly in their transgression.

Wa izaa massal insaanad durru da'aanaa lijambiheee aw qaa'idan aw qaaa'iman falammaa kashafnaa 'anhu durrahoo marra ka al lam yad'unaaa ilaa durrim massah; kazaalika zuyyina lilmusrifeena maa kaanoo ya'maloon

And when harm touches the human being, he calls upon Us, lying on his side, or sitting, or standing. Then when We remove his harm from him, he passes on as though he had never called upon Us for a harm that touched him. In this way what they used to do is made attractive to those who go to excess.

Wa laqad ahlaknal quroona min qablikum lammaa zalamoo wa jaaa'at hum Rusuluhum bil baiyinaati wa maa kaanoo liyu'minoo; kazaalika najzil qawmal mujrimeen

And We destroyed generations before you when they wronged, and their messengers came to them with clear proofs, and they were not going to believe. In this way We repay the criminal people.

Summa ja'alnaakum khalaaa'ifa fil ardi mim ba'dihim linanzura kaifa ta'maloon

Then We made you successors in the earth after them, so that We may see how you would act.

Wa izaa tutlaa 'alaihim aayaatunaa baiyinaatin qaalal lazeena laa yarjoona liqaaa'ana'ti bi Quraanin ghairi haazaaa aw baddilh; qul maa yakoonu leee an ubaddilahoo min tilqaaa'i nafsee in attabi'u illaa maa yoohaaa ilaiya inneee akhaafu in 'asaytu Rabbee 'azaaba Yawmin 'Azeeem

And when Our clear verses are recited to them, those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Bring a Quran other than this, or change it." Say, "It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. I fear, if I disobeyed my Lord, the punishment of a great Day."

Qul law shaaa'al laahu maa talawtuhoo 'alaikum wa laaa adraakum bihee faqad labistu feekum 'umuram min qablih; afalaa ta'qiloon

Say, "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. I lived among you a lifetime before it. Will you not reason?"

Faman azlamu mimmanif taraa 'alal laahi kaziban aw kazzaba bi Aayaatih; innahoo laa yuflihul mujrimoon

So who does greater wrong than one who invents a lie about Allah, or denies His verses? The criminals do not succeed.

And they worship besides Allah what neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say, "Do you inform Allah of something He does not know in the heavens or the earth?" Glory to Him, and He is far above what they associate.

Wa maa kaanan naasu illaaa ummmatanw waahidatan fakh talafoo; wa law laa kalimatun sabaqat mir Rabbika laqudiya bainahum fee maa feehi yakhtalifoon

And people were not but one nation, then they differed. And were it not for a word that had gone forth from your Lord, it would have been decided between them concerning what they differ about.

W yaqooloona law laaa unzila 'alaihi aayatum mir Rabbihee faqul innamal ghaibu lillaahi fantaziroo innee ma'akum minal muntazireen

And they say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The unseen belongs only to Allah, so wait. I am waiting with you."

Wa izaaa azaqnan naasa rahmatam mim ba'di darraaa'a massat hum izaa lahum makrun feee aayaatinaa; qulil laahu asra'u makraa; inna rusulanaa yaktuboona maa tamkuroon

And when We give people a taste of mercy after hardship has touched them, they at once have a plot against Our signs. Say, "Allah is swifter in planning." Our messengers record what you plot.

Huwal lazee yusaiyirukum fil barri walbahri hattaaa izaa kuntum fil fulki wa jaraina bihim bireeh in taiyibatinw wa farihoo bihaa jaaa'at haa reehun 'aasifunw wa jaaa'ahumul mawju min kulli makaaninw wa zannooo annahum uheeta bihim da'awul laaha mukhliseena lahud deena la'in anjaitanaa min haazihee lanakoonannna minash shaakireen

He is the One who moves you along on land and sea, until, when you are in the ships and they sail with them on a good wind and they rejoice in it, a stormy wind comes upon them, and the waves come at them from every side, and they think they are surrounded. They call upon Allah, sincere to Him in religion: "If You save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful."

Falammaaa anjaahum izaa hum yabghoona fil ardi bighairil haqq; yaaa aiyuhannaasu innamaa bagh yukum 'alaaa anfusikum mataa'al hayaatid dunyaa summa ilainaa marji'ukum fanunabbi 'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon

Then when He saves them, they at once transgress in the earth without right. People, your transgression is only against yourselves, an enjoyment of the life of this world. Then to Us is your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do.

Innamaa masalul hayaatid dunyaa kammaaa'in anzalnaahu minas sammaaa'i fakhtalata bihee nabaatul ardi mimmaa yaakulun naasu wal an'aam; hattaaa izaaa akhazatil ardu zukhrufahaa wazziyanat wa zanna ahluhaaa annahum qaadiroona 'alaihaaa ataahaaa amrunaa lailan aw nahaaran faja'alnaahaa haseedan ka allam taghna bil-ams; kazaalika nufassilul aayaati liqawminy yatafakkaroon

The likeness of the life of this world is only like water We sent down from the sky. The plants of the earth mingled with it, from which people and cattle eat, until, when the earth had taken on its adornment and was beautified, and its people thought they had power over it, Our command came to it by night or by day, and We made it a harvested field, as though it had not flourished the day before. In this way We explain the verses for a people who reflect.

Wallaahu yad'ooo ilaa daaris salaami wa yahdee mai yashaaa'u ilaa Siraatim Mustaqeem

And Allah calls to the Home of Peace, and He guides whom He wills to a straight path.

Lillazeena ahsanul husnaa wa ziyaadahtunw wa laa yarhaqu wujoohahum qatarunw wa laa zillah; ulaaa'ika ashaabul jannnati hum feehaa khaalidoon

For those who do good is the best, and more. No darkness will cover their faces, and no humiliation. Those are the companions of the Garden, remaining in it.

Wallazeena kasabus saiyi aati jazaaa'u saiyi'atim bimislihaa wa tarhaquhum zillah; maa lahum minal laahi min 'aasimin ka annamaaa ughshiyat wujoohuhum qita 'am minal laili muzlimaa; ulaaa'ika Ashaabun Naari hum feeha khaalidoon

And those who earned evil deeds, the repayment of an evil deed is its like, and humiliation will cover them. They will have no protector from Allah. It is as if their faces were covered with pieces of the night, dark. Those are the companions of the Fire, remaining in it.

Wa yawma nahshuruhum jamee'an summa naqoolu lillazeena ashrakoo makaanakum antum wa shurakaaa'ukum; fazaiyalnaa bainahum wa qaala shurakaaa'uhum maa kuntum iyyaanaa ta'budoon

And on the Day We gather them all together, then We say to those who associated others, "Stay in your place, you and your partners." Then We will separate them, and their partners will say, "You were not worshipping us.

Fakafaa billaahi shaheedam bainanaa wa bainakum in kunnaa 'an 'ibaadatikum laghaafileen

Allah is sufficient as a witness between us and you. We were unaware of your worship."

Hunaalika tabloo kullu nafsim maaa aslafat; wa ruddoo ilal laahi mawlaahu mul haqqi wa dalla 'anhum maa kaanoo yaftaroon

There every soul will be tested for what it sent ahead, and they will be returned to Allah, their true Master, and what they used to invent will be lost to them.

Qul mai yarzuqukum minas samaaa'i wal ardi ammany yamlikus sam'a wal absaara wa mai yukhrijul haiya minal maiyiti wa yikhrijul maiyita minal haiyi wa mai yudabbirul amr; fasa yaqooloonal laah; faqul afalaa tattaqoon

Say, "Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight? And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who directs the affair?" They will say, "Allah." So say, "Will you not then be mindful of Him?"

Fazaalikumul laahu Rabbukumul haqq; famaazaa ba'dal haqqi illad dalaalu fa annnaa tusrafoon

That is Allah, your true Lord. So what is there after the truth except error? How then are you turned away?

Kazaalika haqqat Kalimatu Rabbika 'alal lazeena fasaqooo annahum laa yu'minoon

In this way the word of your Lord has come true against those who defied, that they do not believe.

Qul hal min shurakaaa 'ikum mai yabda'ul khalqa suma yu'eeduh; qulil laahu yabda'ul khalqa summa yu'eeduhoo fa annaa tu'fakoon

Say, "Is there any of your partners who begins creation and then repeats it?" Say, "Allah begins creation and then repeats it. How then are you deluded?"

Qul hal min shurakaaa 'ikum mai yahdeee ilal haqq; qulil laahu yahdee lilhaqq; afamai yahdeee ilal haqqi ahaqqu ai yuttaba'a ammal laa yahiddeee illaaa ai yuhdaa famaa lakum kaifa tahkumoon

Say, "Is there any of your partners who guides to the truth?" Say, "Allah guides to the truth. Is one who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or one who does not guide unless he is guided? What is wrong with you? How do you judge?"

Wa maa yattabi'u aksaruhum illaa zannaa; innaz zanna laa yughnee minal haqqi shai'aa; innal laaha 'Aleemum bimaa yaf'aloon

And most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Conjecture avails nothing against the truth. Allah is Knowing of what they do.

Wa maa kaana haazal Quraanu ai yuftaraa min doonil laahi wa laakin tasdeeqal lazee baina yadaihi wa tafseelal Kitaabi laa raiba fee mir Rabbil 'aalameen

And this Quran could not have been invented by anyone other than Allah, but it is a confirmation of what came before it, and a detailed explanation of the Book, in which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

Am yaqooloonaf taraahu qul faatoo bisooratim mislihee wad'oo manis tata'tum min doonil laahi in kuntum saadiqeen

Or do they say he invented it? Say, "Then bring a surah like it, and call upon whoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful."

Bal kazzaboo bimaa lam yuheetoo bi'ilmihee wa lammaa yaatihim taaweeluh; kazaalika kazzabal lazeena min qablihim fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatuz zaalimeen

Rather, they denied what they could not encompass in knowledge, and whose interpretation had not yet come to them. In the same way, those before them denied. So see how the wrongdoers ended.

Wa minhum mai yu 'minu bihee wa minhum mal laa yu'minu bih; wa Rabbuka a'lamu bilmufsideen

And among them are those who believe in it, and among them are those who do not believe in it. Your Lord is most knowing of the corrupters.

Wa in kazzabooka faqul lee 'amalee wa lakum 'amalukum antum bareee'oona mimmaaa a'malu wa ana bareee'um mimmaa ta'maloon

And if they deny you, say, "For me is my work, and for you is your work. You are free of what I do, and I am free of what you do."

And among them are those who listen to you. But can you make the deaf hear, even though they do not reason?

Wa minhum mai yanzuru ilaik; afa anta tahdil 'umya wa law kaanoo laa yubsiroon

And among them are those who look at you. But can you guide the blind, even though they do not see?

Innal laaha laa yazlimun naasa shai'anw wa laakin nannaasa anfusahum yazlimoon

Allah does not wrong people at all, but people wrong themselves.

Wa Yawma yahshuruhum ka al lam yalbasooo illaa saa'atam minan nahaari yata'aarafoona bainahum; qad khasiral lazeena kazzaboo biliqaaa'il laahi wa maa kaanoo muhtadeen

And on the Day He gathers them, it will be as though they had stayed no more than an hour of the day, recognizing one another. Those who denied the meeting with Allah have lost, and they were not guided.

Wa imma nuriyannaka ba'dal lazee na'iduhum aw natawaffayannaka fa ilainaa marji'uhum summal laahu shaheedun 'alaa maa yaf'aloon

And whether We show you part of what We promise them, or take you, to Us is their return. Then Allah is a witness over what they do.

Wa likulli ummatir Rasoolun fa izaa jaaa'a Rasooluhum qudiya bainahum bilqisti wa hum laa yuzlamoon

And for every nation there is a messenger. So when their messenger comes, it is judged between them in justice, and they are not wronged.

Wa yaqooloona mataa haazal wa'du in kuntum saadiqeen

And they say, "When is this promise, if you are truthful?"

Qul laaa amliku linafsee darranw wa laa naf'an illaa maa shaaa'al laah; likulli ummatin ajalun izaa jaaa'a ajaluhum falaaa yastaakhiroona saa'a tanw wa laa yastaqdimoon

Say, "I hold no power over harm or benefit for myself, except what Allah wills. For every nation there is a term. When their term comes, they cannot delay it by an hour, nor bring it forward."

Qul ara'aitum in ataakum 'azaabuhoo bayaatan aw nahaaram maazaa yasta'jilu minhul mujrimoon

Say, "Have you considered, if His punishment came to you by night or by day, what part of it would the criminals seek to hasten?"

Asumma izaa maa waqa'a aamantum bih; aaal'aana wa qad kuntum bihee tasta'jiloon

Then, when it has fallen, will you believe in it? Now? And you were seeking to hasten it.

Summa qeela lillazeena zalamoo zooqoo 'azaabal khuld hal tujzawna illaa bimaa kuntum taksiboon

Then it will be said to those who wronged, "Taste the lasting punishment. Are you repaid for anything but what you used to earn?"

Wa yastambi'oonaka ahaqqun huwa qul ee wa Rabbeee innahoo lahaqq; wa maaa antum bimu'jizeen

And they ask you to inform them, "Is it true?" Say, "Yes, by my Lord, it is certainly the truth, and you cannot escape."

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Overview

He Calls to the Home of Peace.

Verse 25 states where the whole invitation is going, and the destination is named rather than described. And Allah calls to the Home of Peace. Dar as-Salam. Not the house of reward or the house of pleasure. Peace, which is what a man is actually short of. Part One is the argument for accepting that invitation, and it is built out of two portraits placed against each other. The man in verse 12, who prays in every posture available to a human body while the pressure is on and walks away from it the moment it lifts. And the field in verse 24, green and admired and owned, right up to the night the command arrived.

Verses 1 to 24

He Passes On As If He Never Called.

Verse 7 names the condition without insulting it. Those who do not expect the meeting with Us, and are content with the life of this world and are at rest in it. Radu bil-hayati ad-dunya watma'annu biha. Satisfied with it, and settled in it. Not vicious. Comfortable. The verse treats settledness in this life as the diagnosis. Verse 11 then explains why nothing has happened yet, and the logic is worth following. If Allah hastened evil for people the way they seek to hasten good, their term would have been decided for them. Men want good delivered instantly and would be finished if the other side of their record were delivered on the same schedule. Verse 12 is the most exact description of prayer under pressure in the Quran. When harm touches the human being, he calls upon Us, lying on his side, or sitting, or standing. Three postures, which together cover every position a body can occupy, meaning he prays continuously, in whatever state he is in. And then the sentence that follows: when We remove his harm from him, he passes on as though he had never called upon Us for a harm that touched him. Not as though he had forgotten. As though it never happened. Verse 14 gives the reason a man is standing where he is standing. Then We made you successors in the earth after them, so that We may see how you would act. The position is a viewing arrangement. Verses 22 and 23 run the same pattern at sea, in more detail, and add the promise men make in the storm: if You save us from this, we will surely be among the grateful. Then verse 23: when He saves them, they at once transgress. And the correction is aimed exactly where it belongs. People, your transgression is only against yourselves. Verse 24 is the parable, and its power is in the timing. Rain, plants, people and cattle eating, and then the earth takes on its adornment and is beautified, and its people think they have power over it. That is the peak of the sentence, the moment of maximum confidence, and the command arrives in the very next clause, by night or by day. And the closing image is a field cut flat, as though it had not flourished the day before. Not decline. Not decay. A harvest.

Verses 25 to 44

The Best, and More.

Verse 26 contains two words that every reader should notice. For those who do good is the best, and more. Al-husna wa ziyadah. The best of what was promised, and then something additional beyond it that the verse declines to name. Whatever a man is expecting, the verse says there is an increase on top of it that has not been described. Verses 31 and 32 give the argument in its cleanest form. Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Who controls hearing and sight? Who brings the living from the dead? Who directs the affair? They will say, Allah. And then verse 32 lands: so what is there after the truth except error? There is no third category. A man who has conceded the answer and then lives as though he had not is not occupying a middle position, because none exists. Verse 35 asks the question that decides who is worth following. Is one who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed, or one who does not guide unless he is guided? Every authority a man submits to is either a source or a recipient, and the verse asks him to check which. Verse 36 then names what most opposition is actually made of. Most of them follow nothing but conjecture. Conjecture avails nothing against the truth. Zann, supposition, the thing men hold with confidence and no basis. Verse 41 gives the exit from a pointless argument, cleanly and without hostility. For me is my work, and for you is your work. You are free of what I do, and I am free of what you do. Verses 42 and 43 then explain why some arguments cannot be won. Among them are those who listen to you, and among them are those who look at you, and neither the listening nor the looking is the issue. Can you make the deaf hear? Can you guide the blind? A man can be physically present, attentive, facing you, and not receiving. And verse 44 closes the section by removing the last complaint available. Allah does not wrong people at all, but people wrong themselves.

Verses 45 to 53

I Hold No Power Over My Own Harm.

Verse 45 measures a lifetime from the far side. It will be as though they had stayed no more than an hour of the day. And it adds a detail that makes it worse: recognizing one another. The faces are familiar and the years are gone. Verse 49 is the answer to men demanding a demonstration, and it is the most disarming thing a man in his position could say. I hold no power over harm or benefit for myself, except what Allah wills. The Prophet, peace be upon him, disclaims control over his own condition before saying a word about theirs. Anyone who represents something larger than himself should read that line before he answers a challenge. Verse 51 catches the belief that arrives too late, and the single word in it does the work. Then, when it has fallen, will you believe in it? Now? Aal'ana. Now, after refusing it while there was still a choice, when belief costs nothing because the thing is already in the room. Verse 53 closes Part One with a question asked in a tone the surah does not soften. They ask you to inform them, is it true? And the answer is given under oath. Yes, by my Lord, it is certainly the truth, and you cannot escape.

Structural Summary

Verses One to Fifty-Three. Allah Calls to the Home of Peace.

The surah names being settled and satisfied in this life as the condition to worry about, and explains that the delay men enjoy exists because instant delivery would work in both directions. It describes a man praying in every posture a body can hold while the pressure lasts, and walking on as though it never happened once it lifts. It gives the world as a field at the height of its beauty, owned in the mind of its people, cut flat overnight. It promises the best and something more that it will not name, reduces every rival authority to the question of whether it guides or is guided, and names conjecture as the material most opposition is made of. And it has the one carrying the message disclaim any power over his own harm before answering a demand for proof.

The Practice

Take It Into the Week

Verse 12. Look back at the last crisis you prayed through. Ask honestly what happened to that intensity after it lifted.

Verse 24. Name the thing you currently think you have power over. Read the verse again with that thing in the sentence.

Verse 41. Find the argument you have been losing energy to and close it with that line, without hostility, and walk.
