The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Overview

As-Saffat is one hundred and eighty-two verses, chapter 37, Makki. This is the first of three parts. It opens on three oaths sworn by ranks, and the thing sworn to is a single sentence. Your God is One.

The heart of this part is a courtroom scene, and what it records is an argument between people who ended up in the same place by different routes. The ones who followed blame the ones who led, and the leaders answer with something worth hearing carefully.

Stop them. They are to be questioned.

Verses 1–26 · Stop Them

Was-saffati saffa. By those ranged in ranks.

The oaths are by beings arranged in ranks, driving, and reciting a reminder, and the mufassirun read them as the angels. Inna ilahakum lawahid. What all of it is sworn to is one clause about oneness.

Wa hifzan min kulli shaytanin marid: guarded against every rebellious devil. La yassamma'una ila al-mala'i al-a'la. They cannot listen to the highest assembly. The access is described as closed.

Fastaftihim ahum ashaddu khalqan am man khalaqna: ask them for a ruling, are they stronger in creation, or those We have created. The question puts them in comparison with the rest of the created order rather than with each other.

Inna khalaqnahum min tinin lazib: We created them from sticky clay. The answer to the comparison is given as a material.

Wa idha dhukkiru la yadhkurun, wa idha ra'aw ayatan yastaskhirun: when reminded they do not remember, and when they see a sign they mock. The pattern is stated as a habit rather than as a position.

Uhshuru alladhina zalamu wa azwajahum wa ma kanu ya'budun: gather those who wronged, and their kinds, and what they used to worship. Wa qifuhum innahum mas'ulun. And stop them, for they are to be questioned. Qifuhum, halt them in place. Nobody is walking past this.

Ma lakum la tanasarun: what is with you, why do you not support one another. The mutual assistance that organized them in life is called for and does not arrive.

Halt them, they are to be questioned. And the network that carried them is asked to step forward.

Verses 27–40 · The Blame, and the Answer

And they will approach one another, questioning each other.

Wa aqbala ba'duhum 'ala ba'din yatasa'alun: they turn on each other. The first act after the halt is not a defense. It is an accounting between them.

Qalu innakum kuntum ta'tunana 'ani al-yamin: you used to come at us from the right. Ibn Kathir carries the readings that the right is the side of strength and of good, meaning they came dressed as the credible ones, from the direction a man does not defend.

Qalu bal lam takunu mu'minin: they answer, rather, you were not believers. Wa ma kana lana 'alaykum min sultanin, bal kuntum qawman taghin. And we had no authority over you. Rather, you were a transgressing people.

The leaders are telling the truth. That is the uncomfortable part. They had no power to compel anyone. The followers went, and the influence they now describe as coercion was persuasion they accepted.

Fa aghwaynakum inna kunna ghawin: so we misled you, we ourselves were astray. Fa innahum yawma'idhin fi al-'adhabi mushtarikun. That Day they are partners in the punishment. The shared enterprise ends in a shared sentence.

Illa 'ibada Allahi al-mukhlasin: except the chosen servants of Allah. The exemption clause that runs through this surah, and it is defined by sincerity rather than by role.

We had no authority over you. It is the truest thing said in the passage, and it is said by the men who led them.

Verses 41–74 · The Friend Who Almost Took Him

Is that better as an accommodation, or the tree of Zaqqum?

The Garden is described first. A known provision, fruits, honored, on couches facing one another, with a cup from a flowing spring. La fiha ghawlun wa la hum 'anha yunzafun. In it is no headache and they are not intoxicated by it. The pleasure is described by what it does not cost.

Then a conversation begins. Faqbala ba'duhum 'ala ba'din yatasa'alun: they approach one another questioning, the same phrase used for the accounting among the damned. Here it is the beginning of a conversation between friends.

Qala qa'ilun minhum inni kana li qarinun, yaqulu a innaka lamina al-musaddiqin: one of them says, I had a companion who used to say, are you really one of those who affirm this. The mockery is quoted in the exact tone it was delivered in.

Qala hal antum muttali'un, fattala'a fara'ahu fi sawa'i al-jahim: he says, would you look. So he looked and saw him in the midst of the Blaze.

Qala tallahi in kidta laturdin: by Allah, you nearly ruined me. Wa lawla ni'matu Rabbi lakuntu mina al-muhdarin. And were it not for the favor of my Lord I would have been among those brought forth.

Afama nahnu bimayyitin illa mawtatana al-ula wa ma nahnu bimu'adhdhabin, inna hadha lahuwa al-fawzu al-'azim: are we not going to die except our first death, and we are not to be punished. This is the great attainment. The joy is expressed as a question, twice, by a man who cannot quite believe the terms.

Limithli hadha falya'mali al-'amilun: for the like of this, let the workers work. One line, and it is the only instruction in the whole passage.

Then the contrast. Ashajaratu az-zaqqum, a tree growing in the very root of the Blaze, its emerging fruit like the heads of devils, and the observation that they found their fathers astray and rushed along in their footsteps.

He looked down, saw the man who used to mock him, and said, you nearly ruined me.

Why This Part Is For You

Verse 24 is two words in Arabic and it removes the option most men are counting on. Stop them, they are to be questioned. Not judged in aggregate. Halted individually and asked.

Verse 30 is said by the men who led everyone else astray, and it is true. We had no authority over you. Nobody was compelled. That is worth sitting with if you have ever explained a decision by describing the pressure you were under.

Verse 28 describes how influence actually arrives. From the right. From the side of strength and credibility, dressed as the sensible option, from the direction a man does not think to guard.

Verse 51 is a friendship. A man in the Garden remembers a companion who used to ask, in that tone, whether he really believed all this. Look at who is currently asking you that, and in what tone.

The Practice · Daily Integration

Verses One to Seventy-Four. Work For the Like of This.

Read verse 24 slowly once. Halted, and questioned, individually.

Name one influence that arrived from the right, dressed as the credible option, and check what it actually cost you.

Take verse 61 as the only instruction in the passage. For the like of this, let the workers work.

Consider who your qarin is. Verse 51 is about a companion, not an enemy.

He looked down into the Blaze and saw his old friend. By Allah, you nearly ruined me.
