The believers have succeeded,

those who are humbled in their prayer,

and who are active in giving the zakat,

and who guard their private parts,

Illaa 'alaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aimaanuhum fa innahum ghairu malumin

except with their wives or those their right hands possess, for then they are not blamed.

Famanib taghaa waraa'a zaalika fa ulaa'ika humul 'aadun

Whoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors.

Wallazina hum li amaanaatihim wa 'ahdihim raa'un

And those who keep their trusts and their covenants,

Wallazina hum 'alaa Salawaatihim yuhaafizun

Allazina yarisunal Firdawsa hum fihaa khaalidun

who will inherit Firdaws. They will remain in it.

Wa laqad khalaqnal insaana min sulaalatim mintin

We created the human being from an extract of clay.

Summa ja'alnaahu nutfatan fi qaraarim makin

Then We made him a drop in a secure resting place.

Summa khalaqnan nutfata 'alaqatan fakhalaqnal 'alaqata mudghatan fakhalaq nal mudghata 'izaaman fakasawnal 'izaama lahman summa anshaanaahu khalqan aakhar; fatabaarakal laahu ahsanul khaaliqin

Then We made the drop into a clinging form, then made the clinging form into a lump, then made the lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, then brought him into being as another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.

Summa innakum ba'da zaalika la maaiyitun

Then, after that, you will die.

Summa innakum Yawmal Qiyaamati tub'asun

Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be raised.

Wa laqad khalaqnaa fawqakum sab'a taraa'iqa wa maa kunnaa 'anil khalqi ghaafilin

We created above you seven paths, and We are never unaware of the creation.

Wa anzalnaa minas samaa'i maa'am biqadarin fa-askannaahu fil ardi wa innaa 'alaa zahaabim bihi laqaa dirun

We sent down water from the sky in measure and settled it in the earth. And We are able to take it away.

Fa anshaanaa lakum bihi Jannaatim min nakhilinw wa a'naab; lakum fihaa fawaakihu kasiratunw wa minhaa taakulun

With it We produced for you gardens of date palms and grapevines. In them you have abundant fruits, and from them you eat.

Wa shajaratan takhruju min Turi Sainaa'a tambutu bidduhni wa sibghil lil aakilin

And a tree that comes out of Mount Sinai, producing oil and a relish for those who eat.

In the cattle there is a lesson for you. We give you drink from what is in their bellies, and you have many benefits in them, and from them you eat,

Wa 'alaihaa wa'alal fulki tuhmalun

and on them and on ships you are carried.

Wa laqad arsalnaa Nuhan ilaa qawmihi faqaala yaa qawmi'budul laaha maa lakum min ilahin ghairuhu afalaa tattaqun

We sent Nuh to his people, and he said, "My people, worship Allah. You have no god other than Him. Will you not be mindful of Him?"

Faqaalal mala'ul lazina kafaru min qawmihi maa haazaa illaa basharum mislukum yuridu ai yatafaddala 'alaikum wa law shaa'al laahu la anzala malaa'ikatam maa sami'naa bihaazaa fi aabaa'inal awwalin

The chiefs of his people who disbelieved said, "This is only a human being like you, who wants to make himself superior to you. If Allah had willed, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of this among our first fathers.

In huwa illaa rajulum bihi jinnatun fatarabbasu bihi hattan hin

He is only a man with madness in him, so wait with him for a time."

Qaala Rabbin surni bimaa kazzabun

He said, "My Lord, help me, because they have denied me."

Fa awhainaa ilaihi anis na'il fulka bi a'yuninaa wa wahyinaa fa izaa jaa'a amrunaa wa faarat tannuru fasluk fihaa min kullin zawjainis naini wa ahlaka illaa man sabaqa 'alaihil qawlu minhum wa laa tukhaat ibni fil lazina zalamu innaahum mughraqun

So We inspired him: build the ship under Our eyes and Our inspiration. Then, when Our command comes and the oven overflows, take into it a pair of every kind, and your family, except those against whom the word has already gone forth. And do not address Me concerning those who did wrong. They are going to be drowned.

Fa izas tawaita anta wa mam ma'aka 'alal fulki faqulil hamdu lillaahil lazi najjaanaa minal qawmiz zalimin

When you and those with you have settled on the ship, say, "Praise belongs to Allah, who saved us from the wrongdoing people."

Wa qur Rabbi anzilni munzalam mubaarakanw wa Anta khairul munzilin

And say, "My Lord, land me at a blessed landing place. You are the best of those who bring to land."

Inna fi zaalika la Aayaatinw wa in kunnaa lamubtalin

In that are signs, and We were certainly testing.

Summaa anshaana mim ba'dihim qarnan aakharin

Then We brought about after them another generation.

Fa arsalnaa fihim Rasulam minhum ani'budul laaha maa lakum min ilaahin ghairuhu afalaa tattaqun

And We sent among them a messenger from themselves: worship Allah. You have no god other than Him. Will you not be mindful of Him?

Wa qaalal mala-u min qawmihil lazina kafaru wa kazzabu bi liqaa'il Aakhirati wa atrafnaahum fil hayaatid dunyaa maa haazaa illaa basharum mislukum yaakulu mimmaa taakuluna minhu wa yashrabu mimmaa tashrabun

The chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the hereafter, and whom We had given comfort in the life of this world, said, "This is only a human being like you. He eats what you eat and drinks what you drink.

Wa la'in at'atum basharam mislakum innakum izal lakhaasirun

If you obey a human being like yourselves, you will then be the losers.

Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones, you will be brought out?

Haihaata haihaata limaa tu'adun

Far, far away is what you are promised.

In hiya illaa hayaatunad dunyaa namutu wa nahyaa wa maa nahnu bimab'usin

There is nothing but our life in this world. We die and we live, and we will not be raised.

In huwa illaa rajulunif taraa 'alal laahi kazibanw wa maa nahnu lahu bimu'minin

He is only a man who has invented a lie about Allah, and we are not going to believe him."

Qaala Rabbin surni bimaa kazzabun

He said, "My Lord, help me, because they have denied me."

Qaala 'ammaa qalilil la yusbihunna naadimin

He said, "After a little while, they will become regretful."

Fa akhazat humus saihatu bilhaqqi faja'alnaahum ghusaa'aa; fabu;dal lilqaw miz zaalimin

So the blast seized them in truth, and We made them debris. So away with the wrongdoing people.

Summa anshaanaa mim ba'dihim qurunan aakharin

Then We brought about after them other generations.

Maa tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahaa wa maa yastaakhirun

No nation can outrun its appointed term, nor delay it.

Summa arsalnaa Rusulanaa tatraa kulla maa jaa'a ummatar Rasuluhaa kazzabuh; fa atba'naa ba'dahum ba'danw wa ja'alnaahum ahaadis; fabu'dal liqawmil laa yu'minun

Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Every time a messenger came to his nation, they denied him. So We made them follow one another, and We made them tales. So away with a people who do not believe.

Summa arsalnaa Musaa wa akhaahu Haaruna bi Aayaatinaa wa sultaanim mubin

Then We sent Musa and his brother Harun with Our signs and a clear authority

Ilaa Fir'awna wa mala'ihi fastakbaru wa kaanu qawman 'aalim

to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they were arrogant and were a haughty people.

Faqaalu annu'minu libasharaini mislinaa wa qawmuhumaa lanaa 'aabidun

They said, "Shall we believe two human beings like ourselves, while their people are servants to us?"

Fakazzabuhumaa fakaanu minal mmuhlakin

So they denied them both and were among those destroyed.

And We gave Musa the Book, so that they might be guided.

And We made the son of Maryam and his mother a sign, and We sheltered them on high ground with a level place and flowing water.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Overview

The Verdict Comes Before the Evidence.

Verse 1 does something unusual. Qad aflaha al-mu'minun. The believers have succeeded, stated in the completed past, before a single quality has been named and before any argument has been made. The success is announced and then the specification follows, which means the list in verses 2 through 9 is not a set of conditions a man is competing to meet. It is a description of what the successful already look like. What follows in the rest of Part One is the making of a human being in stages, the water he did not put in the ground, and three nations who received the same message and produced the same objection, word for word, in three different centuries.

Verses 1 to 11

What They Actually Do.

The list is short and every item is a behavior rather than a belief. Verse 2, humbled in their prayer. Khushu, listed first, and note that the prayer is assumed. What is being described is the state inside it. Verse 3, they turn away from idle talk. Laghw, speech with nothing in it. Not sin. Waste. A man is being measured by what he declines to spend his attention on. Verse 4, active in giving the zakat, fa'ilun, doers of it. Verse 5, they guard their private parts, with verses 6 and 7 marking the boundary and naming anyone who goes past it. Verse 8, they keep their trusts and their covenants. Amanat and 'ahd, what was handed to them and what they promised, which together cover most of a man's dealings with other men. Verse 9, they guard their prayers. Read the frame: the list opens on the prayer and closes on the prayer, and everything else in a man's conduct sits between those two walls. Verse 10 and verse 11 then name the outcome with a word worth noticing. Those are the inheritors, who will inherit Firdaws. Not the earners. The inheritors. A man works and is then handed something out of proportion to the work, which is what inheritance means.

Verses 12 to 22

Made in Stages, and Water Held in the Ground.

Verses 12 through 14 walk through the construction of a human being one stage at a time, and the sequence is deliberate. An extract of clay. A drop in a secure resting place. A clinging form. A lump. Bones. Then flesh clothed over the bones. Then a phrase that stops the sequence: then We brought him into being as another creation. Khalqan akhar. Something happens at the end that is not continuous with the material list before it, and the verse responds to its own account with praise. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators. Then verse 15 and verse 16, in the same breath as the making. Then you will die. Then you will be raised. The same sentence structure that assembled him carries him through his death without a change in tone. Verse 18 is the verse to sit with if you have never worried about water. We sent down water from the sky in measure, bi-qadar, a metered amount, and settled it in the earth. And We are able to take it away. Not could have withheld it. Able to take away what is already in the ground. Every aquifer a civilization depends on is described in that clause as held in place rather than owned. Verse 21 then says the cattle contain a lesson, 'ibrah, and the lesson is the same as the water. A man drinks what he did not manufacture, from an animal he did not design, and calls it ordinary.

Verses 23 to 50

The Same Objection, Three Times.

Nuh delivers the message in verse 23 in the shortest possible form: worship Allah, you have no god other than Him. Verse 24 is the answer, and the reader should mark the exact wording, because it will come back. This is only a human being like you, who wants to make himself superior to you. Two moves in one sentence: he is ordinary, and he is ambitious. Then verse 33, generations later, from a different nation, with the comfortable men speaking. This is only a human being like you. He eats what you eat and drinks what you drink. The same objection, expanded, from people the verse says had been given comfort in this life. Then verse 47, from Pharaoh's court, with the third variation. Shall we believe two human beings like ourselves, while their people are servants to us? Now the class element is stated openly. It is not that the message is false. It is that the messengers come from the wrong social position. Three nations, three centuries, one refusal. Between them, in verse 26 and again in verse 39, two different messengers say exactly the same eight words to Allah. My Lord, help me, because they have denied me. They do not curse the people, they do not describe the insults, and they do not ask for anything specific. Verses 27 through 29 then show what help looked like: a set of instructions, a boat, and two prayers to say. One on boarding, praise to Allah who saved us from the wrongdoing people. One on arrival, my Lord, land me at a blessed landing place. Muslims still say the second one when they travel, which means the answer to a man's oldest prayer for help was a piece of practical instruction and two sentences he could keep saying. Verse 43 gives the law under the whole sequence. No nation can outrun its appointed term, nor delay it. And verse 44 gives the outcome with a word that should sting anyone building something to be remembered. We made them tales.

Structural Summary

Verses One to Fifty. The Believers Have Succeeded.

The surah opens on a verdict already delivered and then describes the men it applies to, in behaviors rather than beliefs, framed on both sides by the prayer. It walks through the stages a human being is assembled in and does not change tone when it reaches his death. It names the water in the ground as held rather than owned. Then it runs the same objection past three nations across three centuries, each of them refusing a messenger for being an ordinary man, and shows two of those messengers praying the identical eight words.

The Practice

Take It Into the Week

Verse 3. Pick the single largest source of laghw in your week and cut it in half. The verse measures what a man turns away from.

Verse 8. List the trusts currently in your hands and the promises currently outstanding. Close one this week.

Verse 29. Learn the landing prayer and say it the next time you arrive anywhere. My Lord, land me at a blessed landing place. You are the best of those who bring to land.
