The Surah · In Two Parts
One hundred and eighteen verses, read in two sittings. The surah opens with a verdict already delivered, in the past tense, before any argument is made. The believers have succeeded. Then it lists what those men actually do, moves through the stages a human being is built in, runs the same objection past three different nations in three different centuries, and ends at the edge of a grave with a request that is refused. It closes by asking the reader whether he thought he was created for no reason.
Part One The Ones Who Have Already Succeeded. The qualities of the successful, listed plainly and framed on both sides by the prayer. The stages a man is made in. Water sent down in measure. And Nuh, and the generations after him, meeting the same objection every time. Send Me Back. The command to the messengers, the community that cut itself into pieces, wealth and children misread as approval, the hearts that fear while they give, the man at death asking for a return, the scales, and the question that ends the surah.Verses 1 to 50
