The Surah · Verses 32 to 59
Wadrib lahum masalar rajulaini ja'alnaa li ahadihimaa jannataini min a'naabinw wa hafafnaahumaa binakhilinw wa ja'alnaa bainahumaa zar'aa
And present to them the example of two men. We gave one of them two gardens of grapevines, and We surrounded them with palm trees, and We placed between them a field of crops.
Kiltal jannataini aatat ukulahaa wa lam tazlim minhu shai'anw wa fajjarnaa khi laalahumaa naharaa
Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short in anything, and We caused a river to flow between them.
Wa kaana lahu samarun faqaala lisaahibihi wa huwa yuhaawiruhu ana aksaru minka maalanw wa a'azzu nafaraa
And he had produce, so he said to his companion, while conversing with him, "I am greater than you in wealth and stronger in men."
Wa dakhala jannatahu wa huwa zaalimul linafsihi qaala maaa azunnu an tabida haazihie abadaa
And he entered his garden while wronging himself. He said, "I do not think this will ever perish,
and I do not think the Hour will come. And even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find something better than this in return."
Qaala lahu saahibuhu wa huwa yuhaawiruhuo akafarta billazi khalaqaka min turaabin summa min nutfatin summa sawwaaka rajulaa
His companion said to him, while conversing with him, "Have you disbelieved in the One who created you from dust, then from a drop, then formed you as a man?
Laakinaa Huwal laahu Rabbi wa laa ushriku bi Rabbie ahadaa
But as for me, He is Allah, my Lord, and I associate no one with my Lord.
Wa law laaa iz dakhalta jannataka qulta maa shaaa'al laahu laa quwwata illaa billaah; in tarani ana aqalla minka maalanw wa waladaa
Why, when you entered your garden, did you not say, what Allah has willed, there is no power except with Allah? If you see me as less than you in wealth and children,
Fa'asaa Rabie any yu'tiyani khairam min jannatika wa yursila 'alaihaa husbaanam minas samaaa'i fatusbiha sa'idan zalaqaa
then perhaps my Lord will give me something better than your garden, and send upon it a reckoning from the sky, so that it becomes a slippery, barren ground,
Aw yusbiha maaa'uhaaa ghawran falan tastati'a lahu talabaa
or its water sinks into the earth, so that you can never seek it out."
Wa uhita bisamarihi faasbaha yuqallibu kaffaihi 'alaa maaa anfaqa fihaa wa hiya khaawiyatun 'alaa 'urushihaa wa yaqulu yaalaitani lam ushrik bi Rabbie ahadaa
And his fruit was encircled by ruin, and he began turning his palms over in regret for what he had spent on it, while it lay collapsed on its trellises, and he said, "I wish I had not associated anyone with my Lord."
Wa lam takul lahu fi'atuny yansurunahu min dunil laahi wa maa kaana muntasiraa
And he had no company to help him besides Allah, and he was not able to help himself.
Hunaalikal walaayatu lillaahil haqq; huwa khairun sawaabanw wa khairun 'uqbaa
There, protection belongs to Allah, the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.
Wadrib lahum masalal hayaatid dunyaa kamaaa'in anzalnaahu minas samaaa'i fakhtalata bihi nabaatul ardi fa asbaha hashiman tazru hur riyaah; wa kaanal laahu 'alaa kulli shai'im muqtadiraa
And present to them the example of the life of this world. It is like water We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and then it becomes dry stubble scattered by the winds. And Allah is Capable of all things.
Almaalu walbanuna zinatul hayaatid dunya wal baaqiyaatus saalihaatu khairun 'inda Rabbika sawaabanw wa khairun amalaa
Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world, and the lasting good deeds are better with your Lord in reward and better in hope.
Wa yawma nusaiyirul jibaala wa taral arda baariza tanw wa hasharnaahum falam nughaadir minhum ahadaa
And on the Day We move the mountains, and you see the earth laid bare, and We gather them and leave not one of them behind.
Wa 'uridu 'alaa Rabbika saffaa, laqad ji'tumunaa kamaa khalaqnaakum awala marrah; bal za'amtum allannaj'ala lakum maw'idaa
And they will be presented before your Lord in rows. You have come to Us as We created you the first time. Rather, you claimed We would never make an appointment for you.
Wa wudi'al kitaabu fataral mujrimina mushfiqina mimmaa fihi wa yaquluna yaa wailatanaa maa lihaazal kitaabi laa yughaadiru saghi ratanw wa laa kabiratan illaaa ahsaahaa; wa wajadu maa 'amilu haadiraa; wa laa yazlimu Rabbuka ahadaa
And the record will be placed, and you will see the criminals fearful of what is in it, saying, "Woe to us, what is this record that leaves out nothing small or large, but has counted it?" And they will find what they did present before them. And your Lord does not wrong anyone.
Wa iz qulnaa lilma laaa'ikatis judu li Aadama fasajaduo illaaa Iblisa kaana minal jinni fafasaqa 'an amri Rabbih; afatattakhizunahu wa zurriyatahuo awliyaaa'a min duni wa hum lakum 'aduww; bi'sa lizzaalimina badalaa
And when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," they prostrated, except Iblis. He was from the jinn, and he defied the command of his Lord. Will you then take him and his offspring as allies besides Me, when they are an enemy to you? What an evil exchange for the wrongdoers.
Maaa ash hattuhum khalqas samaawaati wal ardi wa laa khalqa anfusihim wa maa kuntu muttakizal mudillina 'adudaa
I did not have them witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor their own creation, and I do not take those who lead astray as support.
Wa Yawma yaqulu naadu shurakaaa'i yal lazina za'amtum fada'awhum falam yastajibu lahum wa ja'alnaa bainahum maw biqaa
And on the Day He says, "Call My partners whom you claimed," they will call them, but they will not respond to them, and We will place between them a barrier.
Wa ra al mujrimunan Naara fazannuo annahum muwaaqi'uhaa wa lam yajidu 'anhaa masrifaa
And the criminals will see the Fire and be certain they are falling into it, and they will find no way away from it.
Wa laqad sarrafnaa fi haazal quraani linnaasi mn kulli masal; wa kaanal insaanu aksara shai'in jadalaa
And We have turned about in this Quran every kind of example for people, but the human being is more argumentative than anything else.
Wa maa mana'an naasa any yu'minuo iz jaaa'ahumul hudaa wa yastaghfiru Rabbahum illaaa an taatiyahum sunnatul awwalina aw yaatiyahumul 'azaabu qubulaa
And nothing prevented people from believing when guidance came to them, and from asking forgiveness of their Lord, except that the way of the earlier peoples should come upon them, or the punishment should come before them.
Wa maa nursilul mursalina illaa mubashshirina wa munzirin; wa yujaadilul lazina kafaru bilbaatili liyudhidu bihil haqqa wattakhazuo Aayaati wa maaa unziru huzuwaa
And We send the messengers only as bringers of good news and warners. But those who disbelieve argue with falsehood in order to defeat the truth with it, and they take My verses and what they were warned of in mockery.
Wa man azlamu mimman zukkira bi ayaati Rabbihi fa-a'rada 'anhaa wa nasiya maa qaddamat yadaah; innaa ja'alnaa 'alaa qulubihim akinnatan any yafqahuhu wa fie aazaanihim waqraa; wa in tad'uhum ilal hudaa falany yahtaduo izan abadaa
And who does greater wrong than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord and turns away from them, and forgets what his own hands have sent forth? We have placed coverings over their hearts, so that they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. And if you call them to guidance, they will never be guided then.
Wa Rabbukal Ghafuru zur rahmati law yu'aakhi zuhum bimaa kasabu la'ajala lahumul 'azaab; bal lahum maw'idul lany yajidu min dunihi maw'ilaa
And your Lord is the Forgiving, the Owner of mercy. If He were to take them to task for what they earned, He would have hastened the punishment for them. Rather, they have an appointed time from which they will find no escape.
Wa tkal quraaa ahlak nahum lammaa zulamu wa ja'alnaa limahlikihim maw'idaa
And those towns, We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We set an appointed time for their destruction.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
The Trial of Wealth.
Part One held the trial of faith. Part Two holds the trial of wealth, and it is delivered as a conversation between two men rather than as a rule. One of them owns two gardens that produce without fail, with a river running between them. The other owns nothing worth mentioning. What ruins the first man is not the property. It is a sentence he says out loud in verse 34 and a sentence he fails to say in verse 39. Everything after that account, the water that becomes stubble, the record that leaves nothing out, and the exchange men make with Iblis, is the same lesson stated in different registers.
Verses 32 to 44
The Sentence He Did Not Say.
Verse 33 is careful to establish that nothing was wrong with the property. Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short in anything. This was not a bad investment or ill-gotten wealth. It performed perfectly, which is exactly the condition under which men go wrong. Verse 34 is the first crack, and it comes out in ordinary conversation. I am greater than you in wealth and stronger in men. He is talking to a friend, not addressing a crowd. The comparison is casual, and it is the thing being measured. Verse 35 then does something the reader should not miss. He entered his garden while wronging himself. The wronging is stated before he says a word. The self-injury was already underway; the speech merely revealed it. Then three claims in verses 35 and 36, in ascending order of arrogance. I do not think this will ever perish. I do not think the Hour will come. And even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find something better than this. Permanence, then denial, then entitlement in the next life on the strength of his standing in this one. Verse 39 is the center of the whole surah for a man with means, and it is phrased as a question rather than a rebuke. Why, when you entered your garden, did you not say, what Allah has willed, there is no power except with Allah? Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah. The correction is not that he should have given more or built less. It is that he should have said one sentence when he walked in. Two clauses: this is what He willed, and there is no power except through Him. Attribution, and then the removal of his own agency as the source. Verse 42 gives the ending, and the detail is physical. He began turning his palms over in regret for what he had spent on it. Not for what he had lost. For what he had put in. And verse 43 removes the second half of his boast from verse 34 without comment: he had no company to help him. Stronger in men, and not one of them was there. Verse 44 states where protection actually sat the whole time. There, protection belongs to Allah, the Truth.
Verses 45 to 49
Stubble, and a Record That Leaves Nothing Out.
Verse 45 gives the parable of the whole world in one sentence, and its power is in the speed. Water comes down, the vegetation mingles with it, and then it becomes dry stubble scattered by the winds. The green stage is not described at length because the green stage is not long. Verse 46 then names the two things men measure themselves by and files them under one word. Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. Zeenah again, the same word from verse 7 in Part One. And then the alternative, which is not poverty or renunciation but a different asset class: the lasting good deeds are better with your Lord in reward and better in hope. Al-baqiyat as-salihat, the things that remain after the stubble blows away. Verse 49 gives the moment a man meets his own record, and their reaction is the useful part. They are not disputing the contents. They are appalled at the completeness. What is this record that leaves out nothing small or large, but has counted it? The complaint is about the resolution of the accounting. And the verse ends by removing the last available grievance: your Lord does not wrong anyone.
Verses 50 to 59
What an Evil Exchange.
Verse 50 states plainly what Iblis was, which settles an old confusion. He was from the jinn, and he defied the command of his Lord. Then the question put to every man reading it. Will you then take him and his offspring as allies besides Me, when they are an enemy to you? And the verdict on that arrangement in four words. What an evil exchange. Bi'sa lil-zalimeena badala. A trade is being described, and the man doing the trading thinks he is getting something. Verse 51 then removes their credentials completely. I did not have them witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor their own creation. They were not present at the making of anything, including themselves, so nothing they whisper about how the world works carries any authority. Verse 54 gives a sentence that should make any reader uncomfortable, because it is about him. We have turned about in this Quran every kind of example for people, but the human being is more argumentative than anything else. Aktharu shay'in jadala. Not most argumentative among creatures, more argumentative than anything else. The examples were varied precisely because the audience was going to argue with each of them. Verse 55 then names what actually holds men back, and it is not confusion. Nothing prevented people from believing, and from asking forgiveness, except that the way of the earlier peoples should come upon them, or the punishment should come before them. They were waiting for the demonstration. Verse 57 gives the mechanism of a hardened heart, and it is stated as consequence rather than cause. A man is reminded, he turns away, and he forgets what his own hands sent forth. Then the coverings are placed. The turning away came first. Verse 58 closes with the other side, and it is the reason anyone reading this still has time. Your Lord is the Forgiving, the Owner of mercy. If He were to take them to task for what they earned, He would have hastened the punishment. The delay is named as mercy, not oversight.
Structural Summary
Verses Thirty-Two to Fifty-Nine. What Allah Has Willed, There Is No Power Except With Allah.
A man with two flawless gardens is ruined by a comparison he makes in conversation and a sentence he fails to say at his own gate. He claims permanence, then denies the Hour, then assumes better treatment in the next life on the strength of his standing in this one, and ends turning his palms over for what he spent, with none of the men he counted beside him. The world is then given as water that greens the earth briefly and blows away as stubble, wealth and children are filed as adornment, and the record is described by men who are shocked not by its verdict but by its resolution. The part closes by naming the alliance men make with an enemy as a trade, stripping that enemy of any credentials, and calling the delay in punishment what it is.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 39. Say the sentence at the gate. Every time you enter something you own or built this week, say it out loud before you look at it.
Verse 34. Find the last comparison you made about your own standing, even in casual conversation. That verse is about the sentence, not the wealth.
Verse 46. Name one lasting good deed you can convert some of the adornment into this month, and do it before the month ends.
