Qaala bar Rabbukum Rabbus samaawaati wal ardil lazi fatarahunna wa ana 'alaa zaalikum minash shaahidin
He said, "Rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who originated them, and I am a witness to that.

So he made them into pieces, except a large one of theirs, so that they might return to it.

So they returned to themselves and said, "It is you who are the wrongdoers."
Summa nukisu 'alaa ru'usihim laqad 'alimta maa haaa'ulaaa'i yantiqun
Then they were turned upside down in their heads: "You know these do not speak."

Qulnaa yaa naaru kuni bardanw wa salaaman 'alaaa Ibraahim
We said, "Fire, be coolness and peace upon Ibrahim."

Wa araadu bihi kaidan faja'alnaahumul akhsarin
They intended a plot against him, and We made them the greatest losers.

And We saved him and Lut to the land We had blessed for the worlds.

And We made them leaders guiding by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good deeds, the establishment of the prayer, and the giving of the zakat. And they were worshippers of Us.
Wa Lutan aatainaahu hukmanw wa 'ilmanw wa najjainaahu minal qaryatil lati kaanat ta'malul khabaaa'is; innahum kaanu qawma saw'in faasiqin
And Lut, We gave him judgment and knowledge, and We saved him from the town that was committing vile deeds. They were an evil people, defiantly disobedient.
Wa adkhalnaahu fi rahmatinaa innahu minas saalihi
And We admitted him into Our mercy. He was among the righteous.
Wa nuhan iz naadaa min qablu fastajabnaa lahu fanajjainaahu wa ahlahu minal karbil 'azim
And Nuh, when he called out before that, and We answered him and saved him and his family from the great distress.
Wa nasarnaahu minal qawmil lazina kazzabu bi Aayaatinaa; innahum kkaanu qawma saw'in fa-aghraq naahum ajma'in
And We helped him against the people who denied Our signs. They were an evil people, so We drowned them all.
Wa Daawuda wa Sulaimaana iz yahkumaani fil harsi iz nafashat fihi ghanamul qawmi wa kunnaa lihukmihim shaahidin
And Dawud and Sulayman, when they judged concerning the field, when the sheep of a people had strayed into it at night. We were witnesses to their judgment.
Fafahhamnaahaa sulaimaan; wa kullan aatainaa hukmanw wa'ilmanw wa sakh kharnaa ma'a Daawudal jibaala yusabbihna wattayr; wa kunnaa faa'ilin
We gave Sulayman understanding of it, and to each We gave judgment and knowledge. And We made the mountains and the birds glorify with Dawud. And We were the doers.
Wa 'allamanaahu san'ata labusil lakum lituhsinakum mim baasikum fahal antum shaakirun
And We taught him the making of armor for you, to protect you from your own violence. Are you then grateful?
Wa li Sulaimaanar riha 'aasifatan tajri bi amrihie ilal ardil lati baaraknaa fihaa; wa kunnaa bikulli shai'in 'aalimin
And to Sulayman the wind, blowing strongly, running by his command to the land We had blessed. And We are Knowing of all things.
And among the devils were those who dived for him and did other work besides that. And We were guarding them.
Wa Ayyuba iz naadaa Rabbahuo anni massaniyad durru wa Anta arhamur raahimin
And Ayyub, when he called out to his Lord, "Harm has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful."
Fastajabnaa lahu fakashaf naa maa bihi min durrinw wa aatainaahu ahlahu wa mislahum ma'ahum rahmatam min 'indinaa wa zikraa lil'aabidin
So We answered him and removed the harm he was in, and We gave him his family and the like of them with them, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers.
Wa Ismaa'ila wa Idrisa wa Zal Kifli kullum minas saabirin
And Isma'il, and Idris, and Dhul-Kifl. All of them were among the patient.
Wa adkhalnaahum fi rahmatinaa innahum minas saalihin
And We admitted them into Our mercy. They were among the righteous.
Wa Zan Nuni iz zahaba mughaadiban fazaanna al lan naqdira 'alaihi fanaadaa fiz zulumaati al laaa ilaaha illaaa Anta Subhaanaka inni kuntu minaz zaalimin
And the man of the fish, when he left in anger and thought We would not restrict him. Then he called out in the darknesses, "There is no god but You. Glory to You. I have been among the wrongdoers."
Fastajabnaa lahu wa najjainaahu minal ghamm; wa kazaalika nunjil mu'minin
So We answered him and saved him from the distress. That is how We save the believers.
Wa Zakariyyaaa iz naadaa Rabbahu Rabbi laa tazarni fardanw wa Anta khairul waarisin
And Zakariyya, when he called out to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors."
Fastajabnaa lahu wa wahabnaa lahu Yahyaa Wa aslahnaa lahu zawjah; innahum kaanu yusaari'una fil khairaati wa yad'unanaa raghabanw wa rahabaa; wa kaanu lanaa khaashi'in
So We answered him and granted him Yahya, and We set his wife right for him. They used to hurry to good deeds, and they called upon Us in hope and in fear, and they were humble before Us.
Wallatie ahsanat farjahaa fanafakhnaa fihaa mir ruhinaa wa ja'alnaahaa wabnahaaa Aayatal lil'aalamin
And she who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her of Our spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.
Inna haazihie ummatukum ummatanw waahidatanw wa Ana Rabbukum fa'budun
This community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.
Wa taqatta'uo amrahum bainahum kullun ilainaaa raaji'un
But they cut their affair into pieces among themselves. All of them are returning to Us.
Whoever does righteous deeds while a believer, his effort will not be denied. We are recording it for him.
Wa haraamun 'alaa qaryatin ahlaknaahaaa annahum laa yarji'un
And it is forbidden for a town We destroyed that they should return,
Hattaaa izaa futihat Yaajuju wa Maajuju wa hum min kulli hadabiny yansilun
until, when Yajuj and Majuj are let loose, and they descend from every height,
Waqtarabal wa'dul haqqu fa-izaa hiya shaakhisatun absaarul lazina kafaru yaawailanaa qad kunna fi ghaflatim min haaza bal kunnaa zaalimin
and the true promise draws near, then the eyes of those who disbelieved will stare: "Woe to us, we were in heedlessness of this. Rather, we were wrongdoers."
Innakum wa maa ta'buduna min dunil laahi hasabu Jahannama antum lahaa waaridun
You and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell. You will enter it.
Law kaana haaa'ulaaa'i aalihatam maa waraduhaa wa kullun fihaa khaalidun
If these had been gods, they would not have entered it, and all will remain in it.
Lahum fihaa zafirunw wa hum fihaa laa yasma'un
For them in it is groaning, and they will not hear.
Innal lazina sabaqat lahum minnal husnaaa ulaaa'ika 'anhaa mub'adun
Those for whom the best has already gone forth from Us, they are kept far from it.
Laa yasma'una hasi sahaa wa hum fi mash tahat anfusuhum khaalidun
They will not hear its faintest sound, and they will remain in what their souls desired.
Laa yahzunuhumul faza'ul akbaru wa tatalaq qaahumul malaaa'ikatu haazaa Yawmukumul lazi kuntum tu'adun
The greatest terror will not grieve them, and the angels will meet them: "This is your Day which you were promised."
Yawma natwis samaaa'a kataiyis sijilli lilkutub; kamaa badaanaa awwala khalqin nu'iduh; wa'dan 'alainaa; innaa kunna faa'ilin
On the Day We roll up the sky like a scroll rolled for records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it, a promise upon Us. We will do it.
Wa laqad katabnaa fiz Zaburi mim ba'diz zikri annal arda yarisuhaa 'ibaadi yas saalihun
We wrote in the Psalms, after the reminder, that My righteous servants will inherit the earth.
Inna fi haaza labalaa ghal liqawmin 'aabidin
In this is a delivery for a people who worship.
Wa maaa arsalnaaka illaa rahmatal lil'aalamin
We sent you only as a mercy to the worlds.
Qul innamaa yuhaa ilaiya annamaaa ilaahukum illaahunw Waahid, fahal antum muslimun
Say, "It is revealed to me that your God is one God. So are you submitting?"

He said, "My Lord, judge in truth. And our Lord is the Most Gracious, the One whose help is sought against what you describe."
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
So We Answered Him.
Part Two runs the prophets one after another, and most of them are shown at the worst hour of their lives rather than the best. A man alone in a temple with an axe. A man in a fire. A man on a heap of loss. A man in the belly of a fish in the dark. A childless old man. And four times, at four different points, the same two words appear in Arabic. Fastajabna lahu. So We answered him. Verse 76 for Nuh, verse 84 for Ayyub, verse 88 for the man in the fish, verse 90 for Zakariyya. Four men, four completely different crises, one identical response. The section is a demonstration rather than an argument, and its conclusion is stated plainly at the end of verse 88. That is how We save the believers. Not that is how We saved him. The mechanism is being handed to the reader.
Verses 51 to 75
Ask Them, If They Can Speak.
Verse 52 opens with a question rather than an accusation. What are these statues you are devoted to? Verse 53 gives the answer that has been the answer in every century. We found our fathers worshipping them. Then verse 58, which is one of the boldest acts recorded in the Book. He made them into pieces, except a large one of theirs, so that they might return to it. He does not destroy everything. He leaves one standing, deliberately, because the argument requires a survivor. Verse 63 springs it. Rather, this large one of them did it. So ask them, if they can speak. He is not lying. He is constructing a case that forces them to say the thing out loud themselves. And verse 64 is the moment it lands. So they returned to themselves and said, "It is you who are the wrongdoers." Raja'u ila anfusihim, they returned to themselves. For one sentence they saw it clearly. Then verse 65, and this is the verse to sit with longest in the whole part. Then they were turned upside down in their heads. Nukisu ala ru'usihim. The clarity of verse 64 lasted exactly one verse, and then they inverted, and used the very fact they had just conceded as their defense: you know these do not speak. They admit the idols cannot speak and go straight back to worshipping them. A man can see a thing plainly and still turn himself back over, and this is the surah that records the interval. Verses 66 and 67 are Ibrahim's answer, and it is the last thing he says to them. Do you then worship what does not benefit you at all, and does not harm you? Shame on you. Then verse 68, the answer to a question that had no answer: burn him. And verse 69, four words that end it. Fire, be coolness and peace upon Ibrahim. Note both words. Not just cool. Cool and safe, since cold alone can also kill. Verse 73 then names what the line was made into: leaders guiding by Our command, with three things revealed to them, the doing of good deeds, the establishment of the prayer, and the giving of the zakat. The reward for standing alone was a mandate to lead, and the mandate came with a work order.
Verses 76 to 91
The Prayers, Word for Word.
Read the actual wording of these prayers, because the wording is the lesson. Verse 83, Ayyub, a man who has lost his health, his wealth and his family. His entire prayer is two sentences and contains no request. Harm has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful. He states his condition, then states an attribute of his Lord, and stops. He does not tell Allah what to do about it. Verse 84 records what came back: the harm removed, his family restored, and the like of them with them. Verse 87, the man of the fish, who is named here only by his situation. He left in anger and thought We would not restrict him. Then, in the dark, three clauses: there is no god but You, glory to You, I have been among the wrongdoers. Tawhid, then glorification, then the admission. No request in this one either. And verse 88 gives the ruling that makes this section useful to anyone reading it: We answered him and saved him from the distress. That is how We save the believers. Verse 89, Zakariyya, an old man with no child, and his prayer is one line. My Lord, do not leave me alone, and You are the best of inheritors. He does not say give me a son. He names the loneliness, then names Allah as the inheritor, which is a man saying he knows the succession is not really his to arrange. Verse 90 answers him and then, before moving on, tells you why these people were answered. They used to hurry to good deeds, and they called upon Us in hope and in fear, and they were humble before Us. Hope and fear together, in the same act of calling. Verses 78 through 80 are worth noting for a different reason. Dawud and Sulayman judge the same case, Sulayman is given the understanding of it, and then the verse immediately protects the elder: to each We gave judgment and knowledge. The younger man being right did not diminish the older man. And verse 80 gives the reason armor was taught: to protect you from your own violence. Bas'ikum, your own force. The technology was given because of what men do to each other.
Verses 92 to 112
One Community, and a Mercy to the Worlds.
Verse 92 states the design after showing eighteen prophets. This community of yours is one community, and I am your Lord, so worship Me. Verse 93 states what was done to it, in the same two words used in Al-Mu'minun. They cut their affair into pieces among themselves. Verse 94 then addresses the individual who is worried about whether any of his work counted. Whoever does righteous deeds while a believer, his effort will not be denied. We are recording it for him. La kufrana lisa'yih, no denial of his effort, and the recording is stated as ongoing. Verse 101 and verse 103 give the outcome for such a man in terms of what he will not experience. He will not hear the faintest sound of the Fire, and the greatest terror will not grieve them. Not that he will be rescued from it. That he will be kept far enough away not to hear it. Verse 104 gives the image for the end of everything. On the Day We roll up the sky like a scroll rolled for records. The sky handled the way a clerk closes a ledger. Verse 105 gives the inheritance clause. My righteous servants will inherit the earth. And verse 107 is the sentence the whole surah has been walking toward, and it is seven words. We sent you only as a mercy to the worlds. After every account of destruction in this surah, that is what the final messenger is called. Not a warner to the worlds. A mercy. Verse 109 then models the honest position for anyone carrying it. I have announced to you all alike. I do not know whether what you are promised is near or far. He is told to say he does not know the timing. The surah closes in verse 112 with the whole matter handed over. My Lord, judge in truth.
Structural Summary
Verses Fifty-One to One Hundred Twelve. So We Answered Him.
A young man breaks the idols and leaves one standing so that his people are forced to say the truth out loud, and they see it for exactly one verse before turning themselves back over. The fire is told to be cool and safe. Then four men in four different crises pray, and none of them states a request. Each names his condition and names his Lord, and each is answered with the same two words. The section closes by stating that this is how believers are saved, that a believer's effort is not denied and is being recorded, that the righteous inherit the earth, and that the final messenger was sent as a mercy to the worlds.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 83. Pray it exactly as Ayyub did once this week. State your condition, state who He is, and stop there without adding the instruction.
Verse 65. Name the thing you have already seen clearly and then talked yourself back out of. That verse is about the interval you are standing in.
Verse 90. Check your calling on both sides. Hope and fear, in the same request, not one or the other.
