The Surah · Verses 165 to 200
Awa lamma asabatkum musibatun qad asabtum mithlayha qultum anna hadha qul huwa min 'indi anfusikum, innal laha 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir
And when a disaster struck you, when you had already struck twice its like, you said, where is this from. Say, it is from yourselves. Allah is able to do all things.
Wa ma asabakum yawmal taqal jam'ani fabi idhnil lahi wa liya'lamal mu'minin
And what struck you on the day the two forces met was by the permission of Allah, and so that He would know the believers.
Wa liya'lamal ladhina nafaqu, wa qila lahum ta'alaw qatilu fi sabilil lahi awid fa'u qalu law na'lamu qitalal lattaba'nakum, hum lilkufri yawma'idhin aqrabu minhum lil iman, yaquluna bi afwahihim ma laysa fi qulubihim, wallahu a'lamu bima yaktumun
And so that He would know those who were hypocrites. And it was said to them, come, fight in the way of Allah, or defend. They said, if we knew there would be fighting we would have followed you. On that day they were nearer to disbelief than to belief. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts. And Allah knows best what they conceal.
Alladhina qalu liikhwanihim wa qa'adu law ata'una ma qutilu, qul fadra'u 'an anfusikumul mawta in kuntum sadiqin
Those who said of their brothers, while they themselves sat back, if they had obeyed us they would not have been killed. Say, then keep death away from yourselves, if you are truthful.
And do not think of those who were killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, provided for.
Farihina bima atahumul lahu min fadlihi wa yastabshiruna billadhina lam yalhaqu bihim min khalfihim alla khawfun 'alayhim wa la hum yahzanun
Rejoicing in what Allah has given them of His bounty, and receiving good news about those who have not yet joined them from behind them, that there will be no fear upon them and they will not grieve.
They receive good news of a favor from Allah and bounty, and that Allah does not let the reward of the believers go to waste.
Alladhinas tajabu lil lahi war Rasuli mim ba'di ma asabahumul qarh, lilladhina ahsanu minhum wattaqaw ajrun 'azim
Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had struck them. For those among them who did good and were conscious of Allah is a great reward.
Alladhina qala lahumun nasu innan nasa qad jama'u lakum fakhshawhum fazadahum imanan wa qalu hasbunal lahu wa ni'mal wakil
Those to whom people said, the people have gathered against you, so fear them. And it increased them in belief, and they said, Allah is enough for us and He is the best trustee.
Fanqalabu bini'matim minal lahi wa fadlin lam yamsashum su'un wattaba'u ridwanal lah, wallahu dhu fadlin 'azim
So they returned with a favor from Allah and bounty. No harm touched them, and they followed the approval of Allah. And Allah is the holder of great bounty.
Innama dhalikumush Shaytanu yukhawwifu awliya'ahu fala takhafuhum wa khafuni in kuntum mu'minin
That is only Satan, making you fear his allies. So do not fear them and fear Me, if you are believers.
Wa la yahzunkal ladhina yusari'una fil kufr, innahum lay yadurrul laha shay'a, yuridul lahu alla yaj'ala lahum hazzan fil Akhirati wa lahum 'adhabun 'azim
And do not let those who race into disbelief grieve you. They will not harm Allah in anything. Allah wants to give them no share in the Hereafter. And they will have a great punishment.
Innal ladhinash tarawul kufra bil imani lay yadurrul laha shay'an wa lahum 'adhabun alim
Those who bought disbelief with belief will not harm Allah in anything, and they will have a painful punishment.
And let not those who disbelieved think that the time We give them is good for them. We give them time only so that they may increase in sin. And they will have a humiliating punishment.
Ma kanal lahu liyadharal mu'minina 'ala ma antum 'alayhi hatta yamizal khabitha minat tayyib, wa ma kanal lahu liyutli'akum 'alal ghaybi wa lakinnal laha yajtabi mir Rusulihi may yasha'u fa aminu billahi wa Rusulih, wa in tu'minu wa tattaqu falakum ajrun 'azim
Allah would not leave the believers in the state you are in until He separates the bad from the good. And Allah would not show you the unseen, but Allah chooses from His messengers whom He wills. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And if you believe and are conscious of Allah, then for you is a great reward.
Wa la yahsabannal ladhina yabkhalun bima atahumul lahu min fadlihi huwa khayral lahum bal huwa sharrul lahum sayutawwaquna ma bakhilu bihi Yawmal Qiyamah, wa lillahi mirathus samawati wal ard, wallahu bima ta'maluna Khabir
And let not those who are miserly with what Allah has given them of His bounty think it is good for them. Rather, it is bad for them. What they were miserly with will be hung around their necks on the Day of Standing. And to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is aware of what you do.
Laqad sami'al lahu qawlal ladhina qalu innal laha faqirun wa nahnu aghniya', sanaktubu ma qalu wa qatlahumul anbiya'a bighayri haqqin wa naqulu dhuqu 'adhabal hariq
Allah has heard the words of those who said, Allah is poor and we are rich. We will record what they said, and their killing of the prophets without right, and We will say, taste the punishment of the burning.
Dhalika bima qaddamat aydikum wa annal laha laysa bizallamil lil'abid
That is for what your hands sent ahead, and because Allah is not unjust to His servants.
Alladhina qalu innal laha 'ahida ilayna alla nu'mina liRasulin hatta ya'tiyana biqurbanin ta'kuluhun nar, qul qad ja'akum Rusulum min qabli bilbayyinati wa billadhi qultum falima qataltumuhum in kuntum sadiqin
Those who said, Allah has made a covenant with us that we should not believe any messenger until he brings us an offering consumed by fire. Say, messengers came to you before me with the clear proofs and with what you have said. So why did you kill them, if you are truthful.
Fa in kadhdhabuka faqad kudhdhiba Rusulum min qablika ja'u bilbayyinati waz zuburi wal Kitabil Munir
So if they call you a liar, messengers before you were called liars, who came with the clear proofs and the scriptures and the illuminating Book.
Kullu nafsin dha'iqatul mawt, wa innama tuwaffawna ujurakum Yawmal Qiyamati faman zuhziha 'anin Nari wa udkhilal Jannata faqad faz, wa mal hayatud dunya illa mata'ul ghurur
Every soul will taste death. And you will only be paid your rewards in full on the Day of Standing. So whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to the garden has won. And the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion.
Latublawunna fi amwalikum wa anfusikum wa latasma'unna minal ladhina utul Kitaba min qablikum wa minal ladhina ashraku adhan kathira, wa in tasbiru wa tattaqu fa inna dhalika min 'azmil umur
You will certainly be tested in your wealth and in yourselves. And you will certainly hear much hurt from those given the Book before you and from those who associated. And if you are patient and conscious of Allah, then that is among the matters of firm resolve.
Wa idh akhadhal lahu mithaqal ladhina utul Kitaba latubayyinunnahu linnasi wa la taktumunahu fanabadhuhu wara'a zuhurihim washtaraw bihi thamanan qalilan fabi'sa ma yashtarun
And when Allah took the covenant of those given the Book, that you will make it clear to people and not conceal it. Then they threw it behind their backs and bought a small price with it. And evil is what they bought.
La tahsabannal ladhina yafrahuna bima ataw wa yuhibbuna ay yuhmadu bima lam yaf'alu fala tahsabunnahum bimafazatim minal 'azabi wa lahum 'adhabun alim
Do not think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done, do not think them safe from the punishment. And they will have a painful punishment.
Wa lillahi mulkus samawati wal ard, wallahu 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir
And to Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is able to do all things.
Inna fi khalqis samawati wal ardi wakhtilafil layli wannahari la ayatil li ulil albab
In the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those with understanding.
Alladhina yadhkurunal laha qiyaman wa qu'udan wa 'ala junubihim wa yatafakkaruna fi khalqis samawati wal ardi Rabbana ma khalaqta hadha batilan Subhanak faqina 'adhaban Nar
Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and on their sides, and who reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth. Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose. Glory be to You. So protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Rabbana innaka man tudkhilin Nara faqad akhzaytahu wa ma lizzalimina min ansar
Our Lord, whoever You admit to the Fire, You have disgraced him. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers.
Rabbana innana sami'na munadiyay yunadi lil imani an aminu bi Rabbikum fa amanna, Rabbana faghfir lana dhunubana wa kaffir 'anna sayyi'atina wa tawaffana ma'al abrar
Our Lord, we heard a caller calling to belief, that believe in your Lord, and we believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our bad deeds and take us with the righteous.
Our Lord, and give us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Standing. You do not break the appointment.
Fastajaba lahum Rabbuhum anni la udi'u 'amala 'amilim minkum min dhakarin aw unsa ba'dukum mim ba'din fal ladhina hajaru wa ukhriju min diyarihim wa udhu fi sabili wa qatalu wa qutilu la ukaffiranna 'anhum sayyi'atihim wa la udkhilanna hum Jannatin tajri min tahtihal anharu thawabam min 'indil lah, wallahu 'indahu husnuth thawab
So their Lord answered them, that I do not let the work of any worker among you go to waste, male or female. You are of one another. So those who migrated and were driven from their homes and were harmed in My way and fought and were killed, I will certainly remove their bad deeds from them and I will certainly admit them into gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, as a reward from Allah. And with Allah is the best reward.
La yaghurrannaka taqallubul ladhina kafaru fil bilad
Do not let the movement of those who disbelieved through the lands deceive you.
A small enjoyment, then their shelter is Hell. And it is a wretched bed.
Lakinil ladhinat taqaw Rabbahum lahum Jannatun tajri min tahtihal anharu khalidina fiha nuzulam min 'indil lah, wa ma 'indal lahi khayrul lil abrar
But those who are conscious of their Lord will have gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, remaining in them, as hospitality from Allah. And what is with Allah is better for the righteous.

And among the People of the Book are those who believe in Allah and what was sent down to you and what was sent down to them, humbled before Allah. They do not sell the signs of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Allah is swift in reckoning.

Tafsir · The Reading
Overview
Those Who Remember Standing.
Part Four takes what happened at Uhud and turns it outward, into the questions a person asks after any loss.
Verse 165 records the question they asked and the answer they received, and neither is softened. When a disaster struck you, when you had already struck twice its like, you said, where is this from. Say, it is from yourselves. They had inflicted worse at Badr. The complaint was not about scale. It was the assumption that this outcome required a special explanation.
Verse 169 then does something for the families of the men who died that no consolation could do. Do not think of those who were killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, provided for. And the next verse adds a detail nobody would think to ask for: they are receiving good news about the people still behind them who have not yet arrived.
The chapter then widens out. Verse 185, which every reader already knows. Verse 186, which promises that the testing continues. Verse 188, which names the specific pleasure of being praised for something you did not do.
And then the last eleven verses, which are the summit of the chapter and among the greatest passages in the Quran. A description of people who think about the sky, and a prayer that runs for four verses without a single request for anything in this world.
Verses 165 to 180
It Is From Yourselves.
Verse 165 gives the honest answer to the honest question. Say, it is from yourselves. Not a rebuke. A location. When a loss has a cause inside your own conduct, being told so is the only useful thing that can be said, and the verse does not pad it.
And then verse 166 places the same event on the other side of the ledger. And what struck you on the day the two forces met was by the permission of Allah. Both are true, in the same passage, four words apart. Their conduct caused it. His permission allowed it. Anyone who holds only one half of that ends up either crushed or careless.
Verse 168 answers the men who sat home and then explained the deaths. Those who said of their brothers, while they themselves sat back, if they had obeyed us they would not have been killed. And the reply is a single dry sentence. Say, then keep death away from yourselves, if you are truthful. The claim implies a power over the timing of death. The verse simply asks them to demonstrate it.
Verses 169 to 171 are the consolation, and they are constructed with unusual care. They are alive. They are provided for. They are rejoicing. And then the fourth thing, which is about the living: yastabshiruna bil-ladhina lam yalhaqu bihim min khalfihim. They are receiving good news about those who have not yet joined them from behind them. The dead are being reassured about the living. That is the opposite direction of every ordinary consolation, and it is offered to people who had just buried seventy men.
Verses 172 to 174 record what happened three days later. Those who responded to Allah and the Messenger after the wound had struck them. Wounded men went out again. And when they were told, the people have gathered against you, so fear them, the verse says it increased them in belief. And their sentence is recorded: hasbuna Allahu wa ni’ma al-wakil. Allah is enough for us, and He is the best trustee.
Verse 175 then names the mechanism they had just defeated. That is only Satan, making you fear his allies. Not making you fear him. Making you afraid of people. The fear was real and the transmission was through a rumour, and the verse identifies the source without denying the danger.
Verse 178 gives the hardest verse in the passage to sit with. Let not those who disbelieved think that the time We give them is good for them. We give them time only so that they may increase in sin. Uninterrupted success, with nothing going wrong, is described here as a mechanism rather than an approval. It is the same principle as istidraj in Al-A’raf, stated from the other side.
And verse 180 gives the image for withheld wealth. What they were miserly with will be hung around their necks on the Day of Standing. Sayutawwaquna, they will be made to wear it as a collar. The thing they would not release becomes the thing they cannot remove.
Verses 181 to 189
Praised for What They Did Not Do.
Verse 183 exposes a demand by testing it against history. They said Allah made a covenant with them not to believe any messenger until he brings an offering consumed by fire. And the reply does not argue about the condition. It grants it and then asks the only question that matters. Messengers came to you before me with the clear proofs and with what you have said. So why did you kill them, if you are truthful. The condition had already been met, more than once, and the outcome had not changed. Which means the condition was never the obstacle.
Verse 185 is the verse most Muslims know by heart, and its middle clause is the one that gets least attention. Every soul will taste death. And you will only be paid your rewards in full on the Day of Standing. Innama tuwaffawna ujurakum. The payment in full happens there, which means any accounting you do of your own life before then is provisional by definition.
And then the definition of success, and it is stated negatively before it is stated positively. Whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to the garden has won. Zuhziha means to be dragged or pulled aside, moved by force away from something. Success is described first as an extraction.
Verse 186 makes a promise, not a warning. You will certainly be tested in your wealth and in yourselves. And you will certainly hear much hurt from those given the Book before you and from those who associated. Both verbs are emphatic. The testing and the abuse are stated as certainties, so that nobody encountering them concludes that something has gone wrong.
And the response prescribed is two words, and then a description of what those two words are: and if you are patient and conscious of Allah, then that is among the matters of firm resolve. Azm al-umur, the matters that require decision rather than drift.
Verse 187 states the covenant taken from every community given a scripture. That you will make it clear to people and not conceal it. Then they threw it behind their backs. Nabadhu is to toss something away carelessly, and behind the back is where a man puts what he does not intend to look at again.
And verse 188 names a pleasure that everyone recognizes and nobody admits to. Those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done. Two separate things. Satisfaction in a real accomplishment, which is ordinary. And the appetite for credit that has not been earned, which is not. The verse joins them because the first slides into the second without anyone noticing the moment it happens.
Verses 190 to 200
You Did Not Create This Without Purpose.
Aisha reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, wept through the night when these verses were revealed and said that woe is to the one who recites them and does not reflect on them, a report carried by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih and cited by Ibn Kathir in his commentary on this passage.
Verse 190 gives the evidence and the audience. In the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for ulu al-albab. Albab is the plural of lubb, the kernel, the inside of a thing once the shell is off. People of understanding means people who have got past the surface.
And verse 191 describes them, and it describes them by posture before it describes them by thought. Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and on their sides. Three positions, and the third one is a person lying down. Remembrance is described as filling the whole range of a human day, including the part where the body has stopped.
Then the thinking, and it is aimed at a specific object. And who reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth. And then their conclusion arrives, and it is not a proof. It is an exclamation. Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose.
That is what the looking produces. Not an argument for the existence of a Maker, which they already held. A conviction that the thing in front of them means something, which is a different and harder conclusion.
And then the prayer, which runs for four verses and does not contain a single request for anything in this world.
Protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Our Lord, whoever You admit to the Fire, You have disgraced him.
Our Lord, we heard a caller calling to belief, and we believed. So forgive us our sins and remove from us our bad deeds and take us with the righteous.
Our Lord, give us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not disgrace us on the Day of Standing.
Twice they ask not to be disgraced. Not, do not punish us. Do not humiliate us. That is the fear of people who have understood what standing in that place involves.
Verse 195 gives the answer, and it opens with the word that makes it a conversation. Fastajaba lahum rabbuhum. So their Lord answered them. And the answer begins by removing a distinction nobody had asked about: I do not let the work of any worker among you go to waste, male or female. You are of one another.
And then the chapter ends on verse 200 and it is four commands.
Isbiru. Be patient, in yourself.
Wa sabiru. Outlast others in patience. The form is competitive, patience against somebody else’s patience.
Wa rabitu. Hold your positions. The root is for tying a horse at a frontier post, and it carries staying where you were placed.
Wa attaqu Allah. And be conscious of Allah, which is the only one of the four that is not about endurance, and which is placed last because it is what the other three are for.
A chapter that began by distinguishing the decisive verses from the ambiguous ones ends with four verbs that nobody could misread.

The Practice · Daily Integration
Verses One Hundred and Sixty-Five to Two Hundred. Do It Specifically.
One. Verse 165 answers a complaint with a location. Take the setback you have been explaining by circumstances. Write down the part of it that was from yourself. Do not show anyone.
Two. Verse 188 names the appetite for credit not earned. Think of the last piece of praise you accepted that was not fully yours. Correct the record with the person who gave it.
Three. Verses 190 and 191 attach reflection to looking. Go outside after dark this week, alone, with no phone, and look up for five minutes. Then say the prayer of verse 191 in Arabic if you can, and in English if you cannot.
