The Surah · In Four Parts
Aal-Imran is the third chapter of the Quran and the companion of Al-Baqarah. An-Nawwas ibn Sam’an reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, described Al-Baqarah and Aal-Imran coming on the Day of Standing as two clouds, or two shades, arguing on behalf of the one who recited them. Reported in Sahih Muslim.
It opens on a distinction that governs how the whole Book is read. Some of its verses are decisive and are the mother of the Book, and others carry more than one sense. And it names the disposition that goes looking for the second kind: those in whose hearts is a swerve.
It carries the account of a woman who vowed the child in her womb to the service of the temple and then had a daughter, and said so out loud in her disappointment, and whose daughter turned out to be Maryam.
It contains verse 26, the prayer of kingship, and verse 31, which settles what love of Allah actually consists of. It contains the verse the whole Muslim world knows about holding to the rope together and not splitting.
And its second half is the account of Uhud, the battle the Muslims lost, examined for sixty verses without a single excuse offered.
Four parts, in order.
Part One The Mother of the Book. How the Book is built and how it is misused, stated before any argument is made. Wealth, children and desire named honestly and then outbid. The prayer of kingship. A vow made about an unmet child, and the family the chapter is named after. Hold to the Rope. A common word offered to the People of the Book. The first house established for people. And the verse the whole Muslim world knows, on holding to the rope of Allah together and not splitting. The Day Two Groups Nearly Failed. Uhud, examined without a single excuse offered. The morning the Prophet left his house to set the ranks. The archers. The retreat. And the gentleness that held a community together afterward. Those Who Remember Standing. The wound accounted for and the lesson drawn. The dead who are alive with their Lord. And the closing passage on those who remember Allah standing, sitting and lying on their sides.Verses 1 to 63
