The Whisperer
Surah An-Nas: three names of Allah, one enemy, and the voice in your chest that sounds like your own.
By Mike Rashid King • Allah's Humble Servant
The last word
The Quran opens with a request for guidance and closes with a request for protection. Al-Fatiha asks Allah to show us the straight path. An-Nas asks Him to guard us on it. Between them sits everything else. The order of the mushaf puts it plainly: a man who has been shown the way still needs to be kept on it, because something is working the whole time to pull him off.
When this surah and the one before it came down, the Prophet ﷺ said: what wonderful verses have been sent down tonight, the like of which has never been seen. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, and say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.
The like of which has never been seen. He did not say that about a long surah of law or a great story. He said it about six short lines a child can learn in an afternoon. That should make every grown man stop and ask what he has been missing in them.
Qul a'udhu bi-rabbin-nas. Malikin-nas. Ilahin-nas. Min sharril-waswasil-khannas. Alladhi yuwaswisu fi sudurin-nas. Minal-jinnati wan-nas
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the chests of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind. (Surah An-Nas 114:1 to 6)
The study of the surah line by line is in the Quran Study guide to An-Nas. This essay is about what those six lines ask of a man.
✦
Say
The surah begins with one word: qul, say. Allah could have revealed the meaning. He revealed the words, and told us to speak them. Refuge in Islam is not a mood. It is a sentence you say out loud, with your own tongue, at a specific moment.
Look at how the Prophet ﷺ taught it. 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir was walking with him and he said: 'Uqbah, say. 'Uqbah asked: what should I say? No answer. Say. What should I say? Then he gave him the two surahs, line by line, and said: people cannot seek refuge with anything better than these two. 'Abdullah ibn Khubayb tells the same kind of story, on a dark and rainy night: say, say, say, until he asked what, and was told to recite Al-Ikhlas and these two, three times morning and evening, and they would suffice him in everything.

He made them ask. He held the answer back until they wanted it. A teacher does that when the lesson matters more than the time it takes.
✦
Three names for one enemy
Put this surah beside the one before it. In Al-Falaq a man seeks refuge in one name, the Lord of the daybreak, from four evils: the harm of what He created, the darkness when it settles, those who blow on knots, and the envier when he envies. In An-Nas a man seeks refuge in three names from one evil: the whisperer.
Qul a'udhu bi-rabbil-falaq
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak. (Surah Al-Falaq 113:1)
Four dangers, one name. One danger, three names. I read that as a measure of the threat. The evils of Al-Falaq come at you from outside: the night, the sorcerer, the envious man. You can lock a door against them. The whisperer comes from inside. He works in the place where you make your choices. So Allah gives you the heaviest refuge He gave anywhere in the Book.
Rabb, the Lord. The One who created you, raises you, feeds you and corrects you, stage by stage, the way a father raises a son. Malik, the King. The One who owns you and commands you, whose order is final. Ilah, the God. The One you worship, the only One who deserves your love and your fear and your obedience.
Lord, King, God. Every man answers to some version of those three. Something raises him: his parents, his streets, his gym, his feed. Something rules him: his boss, his debt, his desire. Something is worshipped by him: whatever he gives his best hours to and fears losing most. The surah tells you to take all three back and give them to the One who owns them. And then it tells you why: because there is a voice that wants those three seats for itself.
Notice too that the word an-nas, mankind, ends five of the six lines. Lord of mankind. King of mankind. God of mankind. In the chests of mankind. From the jinn and mankind. The surah keeps saying: this is about people. About you, and the people around you.
✦
The whisperer who withdraws
Al-waswas is the whisper and the one who whispers it. Even the sound of the word is a whisper: was-was. He does not shout. A shout you would recognize and reject. A whisper you mistake for your own thought.
Al-khannas is the one who shrinks back, who withdraws and hides. That is his nature: he retreats when he is confronted and returns when he is forgotten. Allah describes the moment in another surah.
Wa imma yanzaghannaka minash-shaytani nazghun fasta'idh billah, innahu sami'un 'alim. Innal-ladhinat-taqaw idha massahum ta'ifun minash-shaytani tadhakkaru fa-idha hum mubsirun
And if a prompting from Shaytan stirs you, seek refuge in Allah. He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. Those who are mindful of Allah, when a passing thought from Shaytan touches them, remember, and suddenly they see clearly. (Surah Al-A'raf 7:200 to 201)
They remember, and suddenly they see. The whisper only works in fog. The moment a man names Allah, the fog lifts and he sees the thought for what it is: not his, not true, not worth obeying. The whisperer withdraws. Then he waits. He will try again in an hour, in a week, at the next weak moment. He is patient. The believer has to be more patient than he is.
✦
In the chests
He whispers in the chests of mankind. Not in the ears. In the chest, the place the Arabs spoke of as the seat of the heart, where intention lives and decisions are made. He does not need you to hear him. He needs you to agree with him.
So he speaks in your voice. He never says: I am Shaytan, commit this sin. He says: you are tired, skip it tonight. You deserve this. Nobody will know. One more time and then you stop. You are already too far gone, so why bother. That last one is his favorite, because it sounds like humility.
The Prophet ﷺ was in i'tikaf in the masjid. His wife Safiyyah visited him at night, and he walked her home. Two men of the Ansar passed, saw them, and hurried on. He called them back: wait, this is Safiyyah, my wife. They said: Subhanallah, Messenger of Allah. As if they would ever suspect him. He said: Shaytan runs through the son of Adam as the blood runs through him, and I feared he would put an evil thought in your hearts.
As the blood runs. That is how close he is. And that is why the Prophet ﷺ did not leave two good men alone with a thought they had not even had yet. He shut the door before the whisper could reach it. A man who understands the whisperer closes doors early.
He also said that every one of us has a companion assigned from the jinn. They asked: you too, Messenger of Allah? He said: me too, but Allah helped me against him, so he submitted, and he commands me only to good.
You were never alone in your own head. That is not a reason to fear. It is a reason to stop trusting every thought just because it showed up inside you.
✦
The second whisperer
There is another voice the Quran calls a whisper, and it does not come from the jinn. Allah uses the same verb, waswasa, for a man's own self.
We created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. (Surah Qaf 50:16)
What his soul whispers to him. So a man has two whisperers: the one outside him who slips in, and the one inside him that was always there. The nafs, the self, wants comfort, wants praise, wants the easy road and the quick pleasure. The surah of Yusuf says it plainly: the soul commands evil, except where my Lord has mercy (12:53).
Learning to tell them apart is part of the work, and here is how I read the difference. My own self asks for the same thing again and again: the same craving, the same excuse, the same weakness, every week, until I starve it. The whisperer seems more interested in where I end up than in any one sin. If one door stays shut, he tries another. Either way the cure starts in the same place. Both whisper to the chest, and the One you seek refuge in is nearer to that chest than the vein in your neck. He hears the whisper before you do.
That changes how a man fights. He stops being ashamed that the thoughts come, because the Quran told him they would. He stops trusting them just because they feel like his. And he stops trying to win by willpower alone, because he has been told where to run.
✦
From the jinn and from men
The last line widens the frame. The whisperers are from among the jinn and mankind. Some of the voices that pull you off the path have bodies and phone numbers.
Wa kadhalika ja'alna li-kulli nabiyyin 'aduwwan shayatinal-insi wal-jinni yuhi ba'duhum ila ba'din zukhrufal-qawli ghurura, wa law sha'a rabbuka ma fa'aluh, fa-dharhum wa ma yaftarun
And so We made for every prophet an enemy, devils from among men and jinn, who whisper to one another speech made attractive, to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they invent. (Surah Al-An'am 6:112)
Speech made attractive, to deceive. That is a description of half the content made today. The friend who says it is not that serious. The voice in the group chat that mocks the brother who left early for Fajr. The feed built by people who are paid when you stay on it one more hour. The ad that tells you that you are not enough until you buy. Each of them whispers. Each of them works on the chest.
The surah does not tell you to fight every one of them. It tells you where to run. Refuge is a direction. You do not out-argue the whisperer. You leave him and go to the Lord, the King, the God.
✦
His power is small
Here is what the whisperer does not want you to know. He has almost no power. On the Day of Judgment he will stand before his followers and confess it.
I had no authority over you except that I called you and you answered me. So do not blame me. Blame yourselves. (Surah Ibrahim 14:22, a part)
I called and you answered. That is the whole of his power: an invitation. He cannot move your hand. He cannot open your phone. He cannot carry you to the door. Allah says the plot of Shaytan is weak (4:76), and He told Shaytan himself: over My servants you have no authority, except those who follow you (15:42).
Quran 14:22 · Quran 4:76 · Quran 15:42
Some brothers suffer from the opposite problem. They are not giving in to the whispers. They are terrified of them. Thoughts about Allah they would never say out loud. Doubts that arrive uninvited and will not leave. They think having the thought means they have lost their faith.
Some of the Companions came to the Prophet ﷺ with exactly that. They said: we find in ourselves thoughts so terrible that none of us could bring himself to speak them. He asked: do you really find that? They said yes. He said: that is clear faith. Another man told him he had thoughts he would rather be burned to charcoal than speak. The Prophet ﷺ said: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Praise be to Allah, who reduced his plot to whispering.
Sahih Muslim 132 · Sunan Abi Dawud 5112 · Sahih (Al-Albani)
Reduced to whispering. If the enemy has to whisper, it means he could not take the house. The fact that the thought disgusts you is the proof that your faith is there. And the Prophet ﷺ gave the cure in one line: when Shaytan comes asking who created this and who created that, until he asks who created your Lord, let him seek refuge in Allah and stop (Sahih al-Bukhari 3276). Do not debate the whisper. Seek refuge, and stop.
✦
What he did with it
The Prophet ﷺ did not keep these surahs for emergencies. He built them into his nights.
'A'ishah reported that every night when he went to bed, he cupped his hands, blew into them, and recited Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas. Then he wiped his hands over as much of his body as he could reach, beginning with his head, his face and the front of his body. He did that three times. And when he was ill, he recited the two refuges and blew over himself. When his last illness grew heavy, she recited them and passed his own hands over him, hoping for their blessing.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5017 · Sahih al-Bukhari 5016
Morning, evening, bed, illness. The four moments a man is most exposed: when the day begins and demands everything, when it ends and he is tired, when he lies down and his guard drops, and when his body fails. The best of creation met each of those moments with refuge. If he needed it, I need it more. So do you.
✦
The drills
- Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times after Fajr and three times after Maghrib. They will suffice you (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082).
- Before you sleep, cup your hands, recite the three, blow into them and wipe over your body, three times, the way he did (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
- When you are sick, recite the two refuges over yourself, and over your wife and children when they are (Sahih al-Bukhari 5016).
- Say a'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim before you read the Quran (16:98), and at the first sign of anger, lust or despair (7:200).
- Learn the meaning of the three names. When you say Rabb, Malik, Ilah, ask yourself who has really been raising you, ruling you and receiving your worship this week.
- Catch the voice. When a thought says skip it, you deserve it, nobody will know, or you are too far gone, name it out loud as the whisper. Then seek refuge and act against it.
- Do not argue with doubts. Seek refuge in Allah and stop (Sahih al-Bukhari 3276). The disgust you feel is faith (Sahih Muslim 132).
- Audit the human whisperers. The friend, the group chat, the account, the voice that makes the wrong thing look beautiful (6:112). Leave them, or turn them down.
- Close doors early, the way he did with the two men of the Ansar (Sahih al-Bukhari 2038). Explain yourself before suspicion has time to grow.
- Make the prayer of the believers your own: my Lord, I seek refuge in You from the promptings of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, from their coming near me (23:97 to 98).

Wa qul rabbi a'udhu bika min hamazatish-shayatin. Wa a'udhu bika rabbi an yahdurun
And say: My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the promptings of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, from their coming near me. (Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:97 to 98)
✦
The quiet work
Every man is in a conversation he did not start. The voice comes when he is tired, when he is alone, when he is winning and when he is losing. It never announces itself. It just sounds like him.
The Book that began by asking for the straight path ends by handing you a sentence for that voice. Six lines. Three names. One enemy who can only whisper, who shrinks back the moment you remember. Say them tonight before you sleep. Say them tomorrow when you wake. Say them in the car, in the gym, in the hotel, in the dark.
Qul. Say it. The Lord of mankind is listening, the King of mankind is in command, and the God of mankind is the only One worth your worship. The whisperer knows it. That is why he whispers.
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.
