Al-Fatihah
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. The Beneficent, the Most Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgment. You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned Your anger or of those who are astray. Ameen.
Word Alchemy
Tonight we work with five words. Five words that unlocked a truth older than every empire that ever fell. Let us break them open. One at a time.
Glutton.
From the Latin gluttire… to swallow. To gulp. To devour without chewing. A glutton don't taste. A glutton don't savor. A glutton bypasses discernment and goes straight to consumption.
The glutton is not hungry. Hunger has a limit. Hunger is a signal. Hunger can be satisfied. The glutton is driven by a void that eating cannot fill. Because gluttony ain't about the stomach.
Gluttony is the absence of an internal governor. Remove the governor from an engine and it runs at full throttle… until it tears itself apart. That's the glutton. A system with no regulator. No feedback loop. No submission to a threshold. No capacity for the word enough.
A man who cannot say enough to his own appetites… has made his appetite his god. That is shirk in its most primitive form. Not a golden calf. Just a golden plate that never empties.
Throne.
From the Greek thronos… an elevated seat. But the original function was not to elevate the man. It was to elevate the office. The throne was a symbol of something greater than the person sitting in it. It represented divine order channeled through human governance.
The king sat on the throne not because he was the greatest man in the room… but because he was supposed to be the most submitted to the law above him. The throne was never meant to serve the man. The man was meant to serve the throne.
When you reverse that equation… when the man uses the throne to serve himself… you don't have a king. You have a glutton on an elevated seat. And that's the most dangerous creature on earth.
I. The Anatomy of the Glutton
In Frank Herbert's Dune… Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is so consumed by his own appetites… that his body can no longer support itself. He requires anti-gravity suspensors just to stand. A man so gorged on excess that the earth itself rejects him. His body is a monument to what happens when a human being answers to nothing. No God. No code. No restraint. Just appetite feeding appetite feeding appetite… until the flesh itself becomes grotesque.
Three Properties of Godless Power
First. Zero internal restraint. No taqwa. No governor. No circuit breaker. There is no internal voice that says stop. There is only the next appetite.
Second. Consumption of loyalty. The glutton don't earn loyalty. He extracts it. Through fear. Through financial dependence. Through blackmail. That's not leadership. That's hostage negotiation.
Third. Conversion of people into fuel. The glutton does not see human beings. He sees resources. Workers become expendable. Voters become leverage. Children become trophies. People are not people. People are calories.
Godless power is not atheism. It's far more dangerous than that. Godless power is the condition where a man invokes God's name… while operating entirely outside God's law. He holds a Bible for a photo opportunity. He sells Bibles with his name on the cover beside the word of God. This ain't absence of religion. This is the weaponization of religion. And that is worse.
III. Idiocracy: The Prophecy We Laughed At
In 2006, Mike Judge released Idiocracy… a comedy about a future America so intellectually degraded… that a professional wrestler becomes President. When I first watched that film… I thought we'd never get there. I thought it was satire with a warning. Turns out it was a preview.
Keep them entertained so they never become aware. Keep them reacting so they never become reflective. Keep them afraid so they never become free. Keep them consuming so they never become conscious.
We live in the wealthiest civilization in human history… and the most medicated. The most connected… and the most lonely. The most informed… and the most confused. Because the system was never designed to make you whole. It was designed to make you manageable.
V. The Quranic Mirror
The Quran saw all of this… thousands of years before Herbert or Judge or any of us.
Fir'awn. Pharaoh. He declared: "I am your lord, most high." He enslaved entire populations. He slaughtered infants. And when he was finally drowning… he said "I believe." But it was too late. That is the trajectory of every Harkonnen. Every empire built on appetite ends with water at its throat.
Qarun. Given wealth so vast that the keys to his treasuries… were a burden for strong men to carry. He said: "I was only given this because of knowledge I have." The self-made billionaire theology. And Allah caused the earth to swallow him whole.
The people of 'Ad. Given strength and stature that no other nation possessed. They said: "Who is mightier than us in strength?" Allah destroyed them with a wind that lasted seven nights and eight days. When it was over… they lay like hollow trunks of palm trees.
The pattern is consistent. Every nation that reached peak arrogance… peak consumption… peak istikbar… was destroyed. Not by a conquering army. By the weight of its own excess. A civilization that refuses to submit will be submitted.
VI. The Counter-Civilization
Herbert gave us the answer in the same book. The force that destroys the Harkonnens is not another empire. It's the Fremen. Desert people. People shaped by scarcity, not softened by excess. People with a shared spiritual code. People who train relentlessly… who fast… who pray… who operate as a unit because their survival depends on it.
Herbert modeled the Fremen on Arab and Islamic culture. That was intentional. The language. The customs. The spiritual discipline. The desert ecology of faith.
While the Baron needs suspensors to stand… the Fremen can walk silently across open desert for days without water.
While the Baron hoards spice… the Fremen ride the very worms that produce it.
While the Baron rules through fear… the Fremen lead through brotherhood, shared sacrifice, and devotion to something greater.
The antidote to the glutton is the man of taqwa. The antidote to the court is the community of accountability. The antidote to the spectacle is the discipline of Salah. The antidote to Godless power is God-centered living.
VII. The Protocols
Protocol One: The Appetite Audit
1. Every Sunday evening, sit for twenty minutes with a notebook. No phone. No screen. Pen and paper.
2. Write four headers: Body, Mind, Relationships, Spirit. Under each, list everything you consumed that week that you did not choose with intention.
3. Circle the single largest unintentional consumption in each category. That's your primary leak.
4. For the coming week, set one concrete boundary around each circled item. Not a vague intention. A rule.
5. Review the boundary at the end of the week. Did you hold it or break it? If you broke it, don't change the boundary. Tighten your discipline. Run it again.
Protocol Two: The Fremen Standard
1. For 30 consecutive days, eat one meal per day. One clean meal. No snacking. No exceptions.
2. For 30 consecutive days, pray all five Salah on time. Not late. Not rushed. On time and with presence.
3. For 30 consecutive days, eliminate one major source of passive consumption. Social media. Streaming. News feeds. Not reduce. Remove.
4. For 30 consecutive days, perform one act of service per day that no one sees.
5. At the end of 30 days, write a one-page assessment. What shifted? What broke? What rebuilt? Share it with one brother who will hold you accountable.
Final Charge
The Harkonnen floats because he cannot carry himself. The man of taqwa stands on the ground because he is light. Gluttony ain't about food. Gluttony is the inability to stop consuming. It is the absence of the word enough.
The glutton fears the man he cannot buy… cannot intimidate… and cannot distract. The glutton fears the man whose allegiance belongs to Allah alone. That man is incorruptible. And a community of incorruptible men… is the only force that has ever brought a glutton down from his throne.
This world will tell you that power looks like gold towers and private jets. This world will give you a glutton and call him a king. Your job is to know the difference. Your job is to fast when the world feasts. To pray when the world scrolls. To build when the world consumes.
The Harkonnens of this world have always existed. They will continue to exist. But the Fremen have always existed too. Quiet. Disciplined. Dangerous in the way that only free men can be. And they always win. Not because they are louder. Because they are truer.
Which one are you? I already know the answer. You're in this room. You showed up. That means the signal is still getting through. Now do something with it.
Close it in your bones. Bismillah.
وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
And Allah knows, and you do not know. — Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216
