The Surah · In Three Parts
One hundred and eleven verses, read in three sittings. This is the only surah in the Quran that tells one account from beginning to end without interruption, and verse 3 names it before it begins. We relate to you the best of accounts. It is the story of a man thrown into a well by his own brothers, sold cheap to strangers, propositioned in a house where he had no standing, imprisoned after being proven innocent, forgotten by the man he helped, and then placed over the treasury of a kingdom. Nothing in it is skipped. And when he finally has every one of them in front of him with the power to do as he likes, the surah records exactly what he says.
Part One Prison Is Dearer to Me. A father who tells his son to keep a blessing quiet, brothers who plan their repentance before the crime, a promise given at the bottom of a well, a man sold cheap and established anyway, and a refusal made in a locked house. Two Young Men Entered the Prison With Him. Preaching to cellmates before answering their question, a dream no one could read, a man who refused to leave prison until his name was cleared, a plan for seven years of famine, and brothers who did not recognize him. No Blame Upon You Today. The cup in the saddlebag, a father who went white with grief and never stopped expecting, the shirt that restored his sight, the dream from verse 4 fulfilled decades later, and the prayer of a man at the height of his power.Verses 1 to 35
