The Two Who Write

← Quran Study Guide

Kiraman Katibin, the scribes assigned to you

By Mike Rashid King  ·  Allah's Humble Servant

✦

You have never spoken a sentence that went unrecorded.

THE NAMES THEY ARE GIVEN

Qaf, chapter 50, verses 17 to 18

Idh yatalaqqa al-mutalaqqiyani 'ani al-yamini wa 'ani ash-shimali qa'id. Ma yalfizu min qawlin illa ladayhi raqibun 'atid.

When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. He utters no word except that with him is an observer, ready.

Al-Infitar, chapter 82, verses 10 to 12

Wa inna 'alaykum lahafizin. Kiraman katibin. Ya'lamuna ma taf'alun.

And indeed, appointed over you are guardians. Noble, writing. They know whatever you do.

Al-mutalaqqiyan means the two receivers, the pair who take what comes. Raqib atid means an observer, ready and in position. Kiraman katibin means noble scribes. Hafazha means guardians, and Al-An'am names them.

Al-An'am, chapter 6, verse 61

And He is the Subjugator over His servants, and He sends over you guardians, until when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take him, and they do not fall short.

Az-Zukhruf, chapter 43, verse 80

Or do they think that We do not hear their secrets and their private conversations. Yes, and Our messengers are with them, writing it down.

Four descriptions of one assignment. Receiving, guarding, honoring, writing.

WHERE THEY SIT

The verse places one on the right and one on the left, seated. The popular telling puts them on the shoulders.

That detail is not in the Quran and it is not in the two Sahih collections. It entered through later popular retelling. The difference is reported here so you hold the verse tighter than the story you were told about the verse.

WHAT GETS WRITTEN

Qaf singles out speech. Yalfizu covers utterance, the thing that leaves the mouth. Al-Infitar covers the rest, ya'lamuna ma taf'alun, they know whatever you do.

The pairing earns attention. A man will audit his actions carefully and let his speech run loose all day, as though the mouth were outside the jurisdiction. Qaf closes that gap in one clause.

THE LEDGER IS NOT SYMMETRICAL

Sahih al-Bukhari 6491 and Sahih Muslim 131 preserve a hadith qudsi transmitted by Ibn Abbas, in which the Prophet reports the accounting rules from his Lord.

Intend a good deed and fail to do it, and one full good deed is written.

Do it, and ten are written, up to seven hundred, up to many times more.

Intend a bad deed and hold back from it, and one full good deed is written.

Do it, and one bad deed is written. One.

Framework: Systems Thinking. Run the ratios rather than reading the sentence devotionally. Every input path except one produces credit, and the only column with no ceiling on it is the good one. That is the design, stated by the Designer.

THE PAUSE BEFORE THE PEN

Abu Umamah reported that the angel on the left holds his pen over the sin of a Muslim servant for six hours, and if the man regrets it in that window and seeks forgiveness, the angel casts it aside and it is never written.

Source discipline on that one. It is in al-Tabarani's al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, hadith 7765, and al-Albani graded it hasan, meaning fair. It is not in Bukhari and not in Muslim. Take it as a strong report and hold it one tier below the two Sahihs, which is exactly where the scholars put it.

THE SHIFT CHANGE

Sahih al-Bukhari 555 and Sahih Muslim 632, from Abu Hurayra. Angels come to you in succession, a company by night and a company by day, and they overlap at Fajr and at Asr. The ones who spent the night with you ascend, and their Lord, who already knows, asks them how they left His servants. Their answer is recorded: we left them praying, and we came to them praying.

Two specific hours carry the handover. Where a man is standing at Fajr and at Asr is the line his report gets written on.

WHEN THE RECORD OPENS

The common telling is that the two are assigned at birth and start writing immediately. Precision is owed here.

Accountability begins with taklif, meaning legal responsibility before Allah. The Prophet said the pen is lifted from three: the sleeper until he wakes, the child until he reaches maturity, and the one who has lost his reason until it returns. Sunan Abi Dawud 4403, graded sahih by al-Albani.

A child is accompanied. A child does not carry a debit column.

HOW MANY THERE ARE

Ar-Ra'd, chapter 13, verse 11, first clause

Lahu mu'aqqibatun min bayni yadayhi wa min khalfihi yahfazunahu min amri Allah.

For him are successive angels before him and behind him, guarding him by the command of Allah.

Mu'aqqibat means those who follow in succession, one relieving another.

Ibn Kathir, commenting on Qaf, reports the position that every person has four, two by day and two by night, the day pair relieved by the night pair. That is a reported scholarly view drawn from the verses, not a verse itself, and it is presented here as a view.

THE SCRIBES ARE NOT THE ONLY WITNESS

Al-Isra, chapter 17, verses 13 to 14

Wa kulla insanin alzamnahu ta'irahu fi 'unuqih. Wa nukhriju lahu Yawma al-Qiyamati kitaban yalqahu manshura. Iqra' kitabak. Kafa binafsika al-yawma 'alayka hasiba.

And every man, We have fastened his record to his own neck, and We will bring out for him on the Day of Rising a book he will find spread open. Read your record. You are sufficient today as an accountant against yourself.

Al-Kahf, chapter 18, verse 49, first portion

And the book will be placed, and you will see the criminals afraid of what is in it, saying, what is this book that leaves out nothing small and nothing great except that it has counted it.

Al-Jathiyah, chapter 45, verse 29

Hadha kitabuna yantiqu 'alaykum bil-haqq. Inna kunna nastansikhu ma kuntum ta'malun.

This is Our record, it speaks against you in truth. We were having transcribed everything you used to do.

Ya-Sin, chapter 36, verse 65

Al-yawma nakhtimu 'ala afwahihim wa tukallimuna aydihim wa tashhadu arjuluhum bima kanu yaksibun.

Today We seal over their mouths, and their hands speak to Us, and their feet testify about what they used to earn.

Az-Zalzalah, chapter 99, verses 4 to 5

Yawma'idhin tuhaddithu akhbaraha. Bi-anna Rabbaka awha laha.

That Day it will report its news, because your Lord inspired it.

The angels write. The limbs speak. The ground gives evidence. Redundancy is built into the system on purpose, and no man is convicted on a single source.

WHAT MERCY DOES TO THE LEDGER

Al-Furqan, chapter 25, verse 70

Illa man taba wa amana wa 'amila 'amalan salihan fa ula'ika yubaddilu Allahu sayyi'atihim hasanat. Wa kana Allahu Ghafuran Rahima.

Except for the one who repents, and believes, and does righteous work. For those, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good ones. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Sunan Ibn Majah 4250, from Ibn Mas'ud, graded hasan: the one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2441 and Sahih Muslim 2768, from Ibn Umar. The believer is brought near his Lord and covered by His screen, and made to confess sin after sin until he is certain he is finished. Then he is told: I concealed them for you in the world, and I forgive them for you today.

The same record that terrifies a man is the record that gets amended.

✦

Two scribes have been writing since the day you became responsible for yourself. Neither of them takes a day off, and one of them was instructed to wait before he writes.

Say something worth recording today.
