The Surah · In Two Parts
One hundred and thirty-five verses, read in two sittings. The surah opens by telling the Prophet, peace be upon him, why it was sent down, and the reason is not what most people assume about religion. We did not send down the Quran upon you to cause you distress. What follows is the longest single account of Musa in the Book, from a man walking toward a fire looking for directions to a man standing between an army and a sea, and then the harder half, where the people he saved build a calf out of their own jewelry while he is gone for forty nights.
Part One What Is That in Your Right Hand. The fire at Tuwa, the seven-part prayer of a man being sent, the instruction to speak gently to a tyrant, the afternoon the magicians changed sides, and the dry path through the sea. He Does Not Go Astray, and He Does Not Forget. The forty nights, the calf made from their own ornaments, the Samiri, Harun holding a community together, Adam and the tree, and the closing instruction on patience and the prayer.Verses 1 to 79
