The Surah · Qaf
Qaf, wal-Qur'ani al-majid
Qaf. By the glorious Quran.
Bal 'ajibu an ja'ahum mundhirun minhum faqala al-kafiruna hadha shay'un 'ajib
Rather, they marveled that a warner came to them from among themselves, so the disbelievers said: this is a strange thing.
A-idha mitna wa kunna turaban, dhalika raj'un ba'id
When we have died and become dust? That is a far return.
Qad 'alimna ma tanqusu al-ardu minhum wa 'indana kitabun hafiz
We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us is a retaining record.
Bal kadhdhabu bil-haqqi lamma ja'ahum fahum fi amrin marij
Rather, they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused state.
Afalam yanzuru ila as-sama'i fawqahum kayfa banaynaha wa zayyannaha wa ma laha min furuj
Have they not looked at the sky above them, how We built it and adorned it, and it has no rifts.
Wal-arda madadnaha wa alqayna fiha rawasiya wa anbatna fiha min kulli zawjin bahij
And the earth, We spread it out and cast firm mountains in it and grew in it every delightful pair,
Tabsiratan wa dhikra likulli 'abdin munib
as insight and a reminder for every servant who turns back.
Wa nazzalna mina as-sama'i ma'an mubarakan fa-anbatna bihi jannatin wa habba al-hasid
And We sent down blessed water from the sky and grew with it gardens and the grain of the harvest,
Wan-nakhla basiqatin laha tal'un nadid
and tall palm trees with clustered fruit,
Rizqan lil-'ibad, wa ahyayna bihi baldatan mayta, kadhalika al-khuruj
as provision for the servants. And with it We revived a dead land. Such is the coming out.
Kadhdhabat qablahum qawmu Nuhin wa ashabu ar-rassi wa Thamud
Before them the people of Nuh denied, and the companions of the well, and Thamud,
Wa 'Adun wa Fir'awnu wa ikhwanu Lut
and Ad, and Pharaoh, and the brothers of Lut,
Wa ashabu al-aykati wa qawmu Tubba', kullun kadhdhaba ar-rusula fahaqqa wa'id
and the companions of the thicket, and the people of Tubba. All of them denied the messengers, so My warning came due.
Afa'ayina bil-khalqi al-awwal, bal hum fi labsin min khalqin jadid
Were We exhausted by the first creation? Rather, they are in doubt about a new creation.
We created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
Idh yatalaqqa al-mutalaqqiyani 'ani al-yamini wa 'ani ash-shimali qa'id
When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left,
Ma yalfizu min qawlin illa ladayhi raqibun 'atid
he does not utter a word except that with him is an observer, prepared.
Wa ja'at sakratu al-mawti bil-haqq, dhalika ma kunta minhu tahid
The stupor of death comes in truth. That is what you were trying to avoid.
Wa nufikha fi as-sur, dhalika yawmu al-wa'id
And the Horn is blown. That is the Day of the warning.
Wa ja'at kullu nafsin ma'aha sa'iqun wa shahid
And every soul comes, with it a driver and a witness.
Laqad kunta fi ghaflatin min hadha fakashafna 'anka ghita'aka fabasaruka al-yawma hadid
You were heedless of this, so We removed your cover, and your sight today is iron.
Wa qala qarinuhu hadha ma ladayya 'atid
And his companion says: this is what I have, prepared.
Alqiya fi jahannama kulla kaffarin 'anid
Throw into Hell every stubborn denier,
Manna'in lil-khayri mu'tadin murib
withholder of good, transgressor, doubter,
who set up another god beside Allah. Throw him into the severe punishment.
Qala qarinuhu Rabbana ma atghaytuhu wa lakin kana fi dalalin ba'id
His companion says: our Lord, I did not make him transgress, but he was in far error.
He says: do not dispute in My presence, and I already sent you the warning.
Ma yubaddalu al-qawlu ladayya wa ma ana bizallamin lil-'abid
The word is not changed with Me, and I am not unjust to the servants.
Yawma naqulu lijahannama hali imtala'ti wa taqulu hal min mazid
On the Day We say to Hell: are you filled. And it says: are there any more.
Wa uzlifati al-jannatu lil-muttaqina ghayra ba'id
And the Garden is brought near to the God-conscious, not far.
Hadha ma tu'aduna likulli awwabin hafiz
This is what you were promised, for everyone who returns often and who guards,
Man khashiya ar-Rahmana bil-ghaybi wa ja'a bi-qalbin munib
whoever feared the Most Merciful unseen and came with a heart turning back.
Udkhuluha bisalam, dhalika yawmu al-khulud
Enter it in peace. That is the Day of eternity.

They will have whatever they wish in it, and with Us is more.
Wa kam ahlakna qablahum min qarnin hum ashaddu minhum batshan fanaqqabu fi al-bilad, hal min mahis
And how many generations We destroyed before them who were stronger than them in force, and they searched through the lands. Was there any escape.
Inna fi dhalika ladhikra liman kana lahu qalbun aw alqa as-sam'a wa huwa shahid
In that is a reminder for whoever has a heart, or who lends an ear while he is present.
Wa laqad khalaqna as-samawati wal-arda wa ma baynahuma fi sittati ayyamin wa ma massana min lughub
We created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, and no fatigue touched Us.
Fasbir 'ala ma yaquluna wa sabbih bihamdi Rabbika qabla tulu'i ash-shamsi wa qabla al-ghurub
So be patient over what they say, and glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before the setting.

Wastami' yawma yunadi al-munadi min makanin qarib
And listen for the Day the caller calls from a near place,
Yawma yasma'una as-sayhata bil-haqq, dhalika yawmu al-khuruj
the Day they hear the Blast in truth. That is the Day of coming out.

We give life and We give death, and to Us is the return.
Yawma tashaqqaqu al-ardu 'anhum sira'a, dhalika hashrun 'alayna yasir
On the Day the earth splits open from them, hurrying. That is a gathering easy for Us.
Nahnu a'lamu bima yaquluna wa ma anta 'alayhim bijabbar, fadhakkir bil-Qur'ani man yakhafu wa'id
We know best what they say, and you are not over them a tyrant. So remind by the Quran whoever fears My warning.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Qaf is forty-five verses, chapter 50, Makki. Muslim records that the Prophet ﷺ used to recite it in the Eid prayers and from the pulpit on Fridays, often enough that Umm Hisham bint Haritha said she learned it only from hearing him deliver it week after week.
The surah is about surveillance in the exact sense of the word. What the earth takes from a body, what a soul whispers before it speaks, what two recorders capture, and what a man sees on the Day when the covering is pulled off. It is short and it is relentless.
We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
Verses 1–15 · The Record and the Rebuild
They said: when we have died and become dust, that is a far return.
Qad 'alimna ma tanqusu al-ardu minhum wa 'indana kitabun hafiz: We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us is a retaining record. The objection was about decomposition, and the answer is an inventory. Nothing is lost track of, down to what the ground took.
Bal kadhdhabu bil-haqqi lamma ja'ahum fahum fi amrin marij: they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused state. Denial is described as producing incoherence rather than an alternative position.
Afalam yanzuru ila as-sama'i fawqahum kayfa banaynaha wa zayyannaha wa ma laha min furuj: have they not looked at the sky above them, how We built it and adorned it, and it has no rifts. Built, decorated, and seamless, in that order.
Wal-arda madadnaha wa alqayna fiha rawasiya wa anbatna fiha min kulli zawjin bahij: and the earth spread with firm mountains and every delightful pair grown in it. Tabsiratan wa dhikra likulli 'abdin munib. As insight and a reminder for every servant who turns back.
The passage closes with the destroyed nations listed rapidly and one question. Afa'ayina bil-khalqi al-awwal, bal hum fi labsin min khalqin jadid. Were We exhausted by the first creation. Rather, they are in doubt about a new creation.
The ground keeps nothing. The record retains it, and the first creation did not tire Him.
Verses 16–19 · Nearer Than the Jugular
We created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
Wa laqad khalaqna al-insana wa na'lamu ma tuwaswisu bihi nafsuh: what his soul whispers to him. Not what he says, not what he decides. The layer beneath both, where the suggestion arrives before it is even considered.
Wa nahnu aqrabu ilayhi min habli al-warid: nearer to him than the jugular vein. The nearest thing to a man's own life is chosen as the comparison, and He is described as nearer than that.
Idh yatalaqqa al-mutalaqqiyani 'ani al-yamini wa 'ani ash-shimali qa'id: two receivers, one seated on the right and one on the left. The word is seated. It describes a posture of permanence rather than a visit.
Ma yalfizu min qawlin illa ladayhi raqibun 'atid: he does not utter a word except that with him is an observer, prepared. Every word, not every significant word. The qualifier that men assume is there is absent.
Wa ja'at sakratu al-mawti bil-haqq, dhalika ma kunta minhu tahid: the stupor of death comes in truth. That is what you were trying to avoid. The Quran names the avoidance directly and then closes it.
Nearer than your jugular, listening beneath your speech, with two recorders seated and prepared.
Verses 20–30 · The Cover Comes Off
And every soul comes, with it a driver and a witness.
Wa ja'at kullu nafsin ma'aha sa'iqun wa shahid: a driver and a witness. One brings you forward, one testifies. The arrangement removes both the option of not attending and the option of arguing.
Laqad kunta fi ghaflatin min hadha fakashafna 'anka ghita'aka fabasaruka al-yawma hadid: you were heedless of this, so We removed your cover, and your sight today is iron. Hadid, iron, meaning sharp and unobstructed. The faculty was never the problem. The covering was.
Qala qarinuhu hadha ma ladayya 'atid: his companion says, this is what I have, prepared. The same word as the observer in verse 18. What was being prepared is now produced.
Alqiya fi jahannama kulla kaffarin 'anid, manna'in lil-khayri mu'tadin murib: throw into Hell every stubborn denier, withholder of good, transgressor, doubter. The withholder appears again, as in Al-Qalam and Al-Ma'arij. The Quran keeps putting the man who blocks good in the same list as the denier.
Yawma naqulu lijahannama hali imtala'ti wa taqulu hal min mazid: on the Day We say to Hell, are you filled, and it says, are there any more. The question and the answer are both left standing.
The covering was pulled off and the sight went sharp. It was never a problem of eyesight.
Verses 31–45 · A Heart, or an Ear
And the Garden is brought near to the God-conscious, not far.
Hadha ma tu'aduna likulli awwabin hafiz: this is what you were promised, for every one who returns often and who guards. Two habits named, returning and guarding.
Man khashiya ar-Rahmana bil-ghaybi wa ja'a bi-qalbin munib: whoever feared the Most Merciful unseen and came with a heart turning back. The qualification is a heart in a particular condition, described by its direction rather than its content.
Lahum ma yasha'una fiha wa ladayna mazid: they will have whatever they wish, and with Us is more. Mazid, more, is the same word Hell used in verse 30 when it asked for more. The Quran puts the two occurrences in one surah on purpose.
Inna fi dhalika ladhikra liman kana lahu qalbun aw alqa as-sam'a wa huwa shahid: in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart, or who lends an ear while he is present. Two routes are offered. Have a heart already, or give your attention while actually being there. Shahid, present, rules out the man who is in the room and elsewhere.
Wa ma massana min lughub: no fatigue touched Us. The answer to a specific ancient claim, and a closing on the same theme as verse 15.
Fadhakkir bil-Qur'ani man yakhafu wa'id: so remind by the Quran whoever fears the warning. Wa ma anta 'alayhim bijabbar. You are not over them a tyrant. The final instruction limits the messenger's role to reminding.
A heart, or an ear given while you are actually present. Those are the two ways in.
Structural Summary

Verse 19The StuporThe stupor of death comes in truth. That is what you were trying to avoid.
Verses 20–29The EscortA driver and a witness, the cover removed, the sight gone sharp, and the withholder listed beside the denier.
Verse 30The QuestionAre you filled. Are there any more.
Verses 31–45The Way InA returning heart, whatever they wish and more with Us, and a reminder for whoever has a heart or lends an ear while present.
Why This Surah Is For You
Verse 18 removes the category of the throwaway remark. Not a word is uttered except that an observer is with it, prepared. Most men govern their public speech and let the rest run. The verse does not recognize the distinction.
Verse 22 explains something worth understanding about your own past. The sight was always capable. The covering was the problem, and it comes off. Whatever you cannot currently see about your own conduct is a covering issue, not a capacity issue.
Verse 37 gives two entry points and the second one is the practical one. A heart, or an ear lent while you are actually present. Shahid, present. Half the men in any room are physically there and mentally elsewhere, and the verse rules that out by name.
Verse 25 lists manna'in lil-khayr, the withholder of good, in the same breath as the stubborn denier. That is the third or fourth time in this stretch of the Quran that blocking good from reaching people is filed alongside disbelief rather than below it.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Forty-Five Verses. Watch the Whisper.
Treat verse 18 as literal for one full day. Every word, including the ones you would not repeat.
When you cannot see your own fault, use verse 22. The problem is the covering, and the covering is removable now at a cost you choose.
Practice being shahid, present, in one conversation a day. Verse 37 makes presence the condition for the reminder landing.
Learn Qaf by hearing it. Umm Hisham said she learned it from the pulpit, week after week, without setting out to memorize it.
He knows the whisper before the word. The covering comes off, and the sight goes sharp.
