The Surah · Ghafir
Ha Meem
Ha Meem.
Tanzilu al-Kitabi mina Allahi al-'Azizi al-'Alim
The sending down of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,
Ghafiri adh-dhanbi wa qabili at-tawbi shadidi al-'iqabi dhi at-tawl, la ilaha illa Huwa, ilayhi al-masir
Forgiver of sin, Acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, Owner of abundance. There is no god but Him. To Him is the return.
Ma yujadilu fi ayati Allahi illa alladhina kafaru fala yaghrurka taqallubuhum fi al-bilad
None dispute the signs of Allah except those who disbelieve, so do not let their movement about the land deceive you.
Kadhdhabat qablahum qawmu Nuhin wal-ahzabu min ba'dihim, wa hammat kullu ummatin biRasulihim liya'khudhuh, wa jadalu bil-batili liyudhidu bihi al-haqqa fa akhadhtuhum, fakayfa kana 'iqab
Before them the people of Nuh denied, and the factions after them. Every nation planned against its messenger to seize him, and they argued with falsehood to defeat the truth with it, so I seized them. How was My punishment?
Wa kadhalika haqqat kalimatu Rabbika 'ala alladhina kafaru annahum ashabu an-nar
So the word of your Lord came due against those who disbelieved, that they are the companions of the Fire.
Alladhina yahmiluna al-'arsha wa man hawlahu yusabbihuna bihamdi Rabbihim wa yu'minuna bihi wa yastaghfiruna lilladhina amanu, Rabbana wasi'ta kulla shay'in rahmatan wa 'ilman faghfir lilladhina tabu wattaba'u sabilaka wa qihim 'adhaba al-jahim
Those who carry the Throne and those around it glorify their Lord with praise, believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believed: our Lord, You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repented and followed Your way, and protect them from the punishment of the blaze.
Rabbana wa adkhilhum jannati 'adnin allati wa'adtahum wa man salaha min aba'ihim wa azwajihim wa dhurriyyatihim, innaka Anta al-'Azizu al-Hakim
Our Lord, admit them to the gardens of permanence that You promised them, and whoever was righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their offspring. You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Wa qihimu as-sayyi'at, wa man taqi as-sayyi'ati yawma'idhin faqad rahimtah, wa dhalika huwa al-fawzu al-'azim
And protect them from the bad deeds. Whoever You protect from bad deeds on that day, You have shown him mercy, and that is the great triumph.
Inna alladhina kafaru yunadawna lamaqtu Allahi akbaru min maqtikum anfusakum idh tud'awna ila al-imani fatakfurun
Those who disbelieved will be called: the hatred of Allah is greater than your hatred of yourselves, when you were called to faith and refused.
Qalu Rabbana amattana ithnatayni wa ahyaytana ithnatayni fa'tarafna bidhunubina fahal ila khurujin min sabil
They say: our Lord, You made us die twice and gave us life twice, and we confess our sins. Is there any way out?
Dhalikum bi annahu idha du'iya Allahu wahdahu kafartum, wa in yushrak bihi tu'minu, falhukmu lillahi al-'Aliyyi al-Kabir
That is because when Allah alone was called upon you disbelieved, and when partners were set up with Him you believed. The judgment belongs to Allah, the Most High, the Great.
Huwa alladhi yurikum ayatihi wa yunazzilu lakum mina as-sama'i rizqan, wa ma yatadhakkaru illa man yunib
He is the One who shows you His signs and sends down provision for you from the sky. None takes heed except one who turns back to Him.
Fad'u Allaha mukhlisina lahu ad-dina wa law kariha al-kafirun
So call upon Allah with the religion made sincerely His, even if the disbelievers hate it.
Rafi'u ad-darajati dhu al-'arsh, yulqi ar-ruha min amrihi 'ala man yasha'u min 'ibadihi liyundhira yawma at-talaq
Raiser of ranks, Owner of the Throne. He sends the spirit of His command upon whom He wills of His servants, to warn of the Day of Meeting,
Yawma hum barizuna la yakhfa 'ala Allahi minhum shay', limani al-mulku al-yawma, lillahi al-Wahidi al-Qahhar
the day they come out, when nothing about them is hidden from Allah. Whose is the dominion today? It belongs to Allah, the One, the Overpowering.
Al-yawma tujza kullu nafsin bima kasabat, la zulma al-yawm, inna Allaha sari'u al-hisab
Today every soul is repaid for what it earned. There is no wrong today. Allah is swift in reckoning.
Warn them of the day drawing near, when hearts reach the throats, choked. The wrongdoers have no close friend and no intercessor who is obeyed.
Ya'lamu kha'inata al-a'yuni wa ma tukhfi as-sudur
He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the chests conceal.
Wallahu yaqdi bil-haqq, walladhina yad'una min dunihi la yaqduna bishay', inna Allaha Huwa as-Sami'u al-Basir
Allah judges with truth, and those they call on besides Him judge nothing. Allah is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Awa lam yasiru fi al-ardi fayanzuru kayfa kana 'aqibatu alladhina kanu min qablihim, kanu hum ashadda minhum quwwatan wa atharan fi al-ardi fa akhadhahumu Allahu bidhunubihim wa ma kana lahum mina Allahi min waq
Have they not travelled the earth and seen how those before them ended? They were greater than them in power and in the traces they left in the land, and Allah seized them for their sins, and they had no protector from Allah.
Dhalika bi annahum kanat ta'tihim rusuluhum bil-bayyinati fakafaru fa akhadhahumu Allah, innahu Qawiyyun shadidu al-'iqab
That is because their messengers kept coming to them with clear proofs and they rejected, so Allah seized them. He is Strong, severe in punishment.
Wa laqad arsalna Musa bi ayatina wa sultanin mubin
We sent Musa with Our signs and a clear authority,
Ila Fir'awna wa Hamana wa Qarun faqalu sahirun kadhdhab
to Pharaoh, Haman, and Qarun, and they said: a magician, a liar.
Falamma ja'ahum bil-haqqi min 'indina qalu uqtulu abna'a alladhina amanu ma'ahu wastahyu nisa'ahum, wa ma kaydu al-kafirina illa fi dalal
When he brought them the truth from Us they said: kill the sons of those who believed with him, and keep their women alive. The plotting of the disbelievers is nothing but astray.
Wa qala Fir'awnu dharuni aqtul Musa walyad'u Rabbah, inni akhafu an yubaddila dinakum aw an yuzhira fi al-ardi al-fasad
Pharaoh said: let me kill Musa, and let him call his Lord. I fear he will change your religion, or cause corruption to appear in the land.
Musa said: I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Reckoning.
Wa qala rajulun mu'minun min ali Fir'awna yaktumu imanahu ata'quluna rajulan an yaqula Rabbiya Allahu wa qad ja'akum bil-bayyinati min Rabbikum, wa in yaku kadhiban fa'alayhi kadhibuh, wa in yaku sadiqan yusibkum ba'du alladhi ya'idukum, inna Allaha la yahdi man huwa musrifun kadhdhab
A believing man from the family of Pharaoh, who was concealing his faith, said: are you going to kill a man for saying my Lord is Allah, when he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? If he is lying, his lie is on him, and if he is truthful, some of what he promises you will strike you. Allah does not guide one who is excessive and false.
Ya qawmi lakumu al-mulku al-yawma zahirina fi al-ardi faman yansuruna min ba'si Allahi in ja'ana, qala Fir'awnu ma urikum illa ma ara wa ma ahdikum illa sabila ar-rashad
My people, the kingdom is yours today, dominant in the land, but who will help us against the force of Allah if it comes to us? Pharaoh said: I show you only what I see, and I guide you only to the way of right conduct.
The one who believed said: my people, I fear for you something like the day of the factions,
Mithla da'bi qawmi Nuhin wa 'Adin wa Thamuda walladhina min ba'dihim, wa ma Allahu yuridu zulman lil-'ibad
like the case of the people of Nuh, and 'Ad, and Thamud, and those after them. Allah does not want injustice for His servants.
My people, I fear for you the Day of Calling,
Yawma tuwalluna mudbirina ma lakum mina Allahi min 'asim, wa man yudlili Allahu fama lahu min had
the day you turn away in flight with no protector for you from Allah. Whoever Allah leaves astray has no guide.
Wa laqad ja'akum Yusufu min qablu bil-bayyinati fama ziltum fi shakkin mimma ja'akum bihi, hatta idha halaka qultum lan yab'atha Allahu min ba'dihi rasula, kadhalika yudillu Allahu man huwa musrifun murtab
Yusuf came to you before with clear proofs, and you stayed in doubt about what he brought you, until when he died you said Allah will never send a messenger after him. So Allah leaves astray the one who is excessive and doubting.
Alladhina yujadiluna fi ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahum, kabura maqtan 'inda Allahi wa 'inda alladhina amanu, kadhalika yatba'u Allahu 'ala kulli qalbi mutakabbirin jabbar
Those who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority given to them, it is greatly hateful with Allah and with those who believe. So Allah seals every heart that is arrogant and tyrannical.
Pharaoh said: Haman, build me a tower, so that I may reach the ways,
the ways to the heavens, and look at the God of Musa, though I think he is lying. So the evil of his deed was made attractive to Pharaoh and he was turned from the path. The plotting of Pharaoh came to nothing but ruin.
The one who believed said: my people, follow me, I will guide you to the way of right conduct.
Ya qawmi innama hadhihi al-hayatu ad-dunya mata'un wa inna al-akhirata hiya daru al-qarar
My people, this worldly life is only an enjoyment, and the Hereafter is the home of settlement.
Man 'amila sayyi'atan fala yujza illa mithlaha, wa man 'amila salihan min dhakarin aw untha wa huwa mu'minun fa ula'ika yadkhuluna al-jannata yurzaquna fiha bighayri hisab
Whoever does a bad deed is repaid only with its like. Whoever does right, male or female, while a believer, those enter the Garden, provided for in it without reckoning.
My people, how is it that I call you to safety and you call me to the Fire?
Tad'unani li akfura billahi wa ushrika bihi ma laysa li bihi 'ilmun wa ana ad'ukum ila al-'Azizi al-Ghaffar
You call me to reject Allah and to set up with Him what I have no knowledge of, and I call you to the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.
Without doubt, what you call me to has no call in this world or in the Hereafter, our return is to Allah, and the excessive are the companions of the Fire.
Fasatadhkuruna ma aqulu lakum, wa ufawwidu amri ila Allah, inna Allaha basirun bil-'ibad
You will remember what I say to you. I entrust my affair to Allah. Allah is Seeing of His servants.
So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the worst punishment closed in on the family of Pharaoh.
An-naru yu'raduna 'alayha ghuduwwan wa 'ashiyya, wa yawma taqumu as-sa'atu adkhilu ala Fir'awna ashadda al-'adhab
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. On the day the Hour comes: admit the family of Pharaoh to the harshest punishment.
Wa idh yatahajjuna fi an-nari fayaqulu ad-du'afa'u lilladhina istakbaru inna kunna lakum taba'an fahal antum mughnuna 'anna nasiban mina an-nar
When they argue with one another in the Fire, the weak say to those who were arrogant: we were followers of yours, so can you take from us any share of the Fire?
Qala alladhina istakbaru inna kullun fiha inna Allaha qad hakama bayna al-'ibad
Those who were arrogant say: we are all in it. Allah has already judged between the servants.
Wa qala alladhina fi an-nari likhazanati jahannama ud'u Rabbakum yukhaffif 'anna yawman mina al-'adhab
Those in the Fire say to the keepers of Hell: call your Lord to lighten a single day of the punishment for us.
Qalu awa lam taku ta'tikum rusulukum bil-bayyinati, qalu bala, qalu fad'u, wa ma du'a'u al-kafirina illa fi dalal
They say: did your messengers not come to you with clear proofs? They say: yes. They say: then call. The call of the disbelievers is nothing but astray.
Inna lanansuru rusulana walladhina amanu fi al-hayati ad-dunya wa yawma yaqumu al-ashhad
We will help Our messengers and those who believed, in this life and on the day the witnesses stand,
the day the excuse of the wrongdoers does not help them. On them is the curse, and theirs is the worst home.
Wa laqad atayna Musa al-huda wa awrathna bani Isra'ila al-kitab
We gave Musa the guidance, and We passed the Book on to the children of Israel,
Hudan wa dhikra li uli al-albab
as guidance and a reminder for those with understanding.
Fasbir inna wa'da Allahi haqqun wastaghfir lidhanbika wa sabbih bihamdi Rabbika bil-'ashiyyi wal-ibkar
So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. Ask forgiveness for your sin, and glorify your Lord with praise in the evening and the early morning.
Inna alladhina yujadiluna fi ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahum in fi sudurihim illa kibrun ma hum bibalighih, fasta'idh billahi innahu Huwa as-Sami'u al-Basir
Those who dispute the signs of Allah without any authority given to them, in their chests is nothing but arrogance they will never reach the object of. So seek refuge in Allah. He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know.
The blind and the seeing are not equal, nor are those who believed and did right equal to the wrongdoer. Little do you take heed.
The Hour is coming, there is no doubt in it, but most people do not believe.
Wa qala Rabbukumu ud'uni astajib lakum, inna alladhina yastakbiruna 'an 'ibadati sayadkhuluna jahannama dakhirin
Your Lord said: call upon Me, I will respond to you. Those too arrogant to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated.
Allahu alladhi ja'ala lakumu al-layla litaskunu fihi wan-nahara mubsira, inna Allaha ladhu fadlin 'ala an-nasi wa lakinna akthara an-nasi la yashkurun
Allah is the One who made the night for you to rest in, and the day giving sight. Allah is full of bounty toward people, but most people are not grateful.
Dhalikumu Allahu Rabbukum khaliqu kulli shay', la ilaha illa Huwa, fa anna tu'fakun
That is Allah, your Lord, Creator of all things. There is no god but Him. How are you turned away?
Kadhalika yu'faku alladhina kanu bi ayati Allahi yajhadun
So are turned away those who kept denying the signs of Allah.
Allahu alladhi ja'ala lakumu al-arda qararan was-sama'a bina'an wa sawwarakum fa ahsana suwarakum wa razaqakum mina at-tayyibat, dhalikumu Allahu Rabbukum, fatabaraka Allahu Rabbu al-'alamin
Allah is the One who made the earth a place of settlement for you and the sky a structure, shaped you and made your shapes good, and provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord. Blessed is Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
He is the Living. There is no god but Him, so call on Him with the religion made sincerely His. Praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
Qul inni nuhitu an a'buda alladhina tad'una min duni Allahi lamma ja'aniya al-bayyinatu min Rabbi wa umirtu an uslima liRabbi al-'alamin
Say: I have been forbidden to worship those you call on besides Allah, since the clear proofs came to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all the worlds.
Huwa alladhi khalaqakum min turabin thumma min nutfatin thumma min 'alaqatin thumma yukhrijukum tiflan thumma litablughu ashuddakum thumma litakunu shuyukha, wa minkum man yutawaffa min qablu, wa litablughu ajalan musamman wa la'allakum ta'qilun
He is the One who created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging form, then brings you out as a child, then that you may reach your full strength, then that you may become old. Some of you are taken before that, and that you may reach a stated term, and so that you may use reason.
Huwa alladhi yuhyi wa yumitu, fa idha qada amran fa innama yaqulu lahu kun fayakun
He is the One who gives life and gives death. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it be, and it is.
Alam tara ila alladhina yujadiluna fi ayati Allahi anna yusrafun
Have you not seen those who dispute the signs of Allah, how they are turned away?
Those who denied the Book and what We sent Our messengers with, they will come to know,
Idhi al-aghlalu fi a'naqihim was-salasilu yushabun
when the shackles are on their necks and the chains, they are dragged
Fi al-hamimi thumma fi an-nari yusjarun
into the boiling water, then into the Fire they are fuelled.
Thumma qila lahum ayna ma kuntum tushrikun
Then they are asked: where are those you used to set up as partners
Min duni Allah, qalu dallu 'anna bal lam nakun nad'u min qablu shay'a, kadhalika yudillu Allahu al-kafirin
besides Allah? They say: they have left us. Rather, we were not calling on anything before. So Allah leaves the disbelievers astray.
Dhalikum bima kuntum tafrahuna fi al-ardi bighayri al-haqqi wa bima kuntum tamrahun
That is because you used to rejoice in the land without right, and because you used to exult.
Udkhulu abwaba jahannama khalidina fiha, fabi'sa mathwa al-mutakabbirin
Enter the gates of Hell, staying in it. Wretched is the lodging of the arrogant.
So be patient. The promise of Allah is true. Whether We show you part of what We promise them, or take you first, to Us they are returned.
Wa laqad arsalna rusulan min qablika minhum man qasasna 'alayka wa minhum man lam naqsus 'alayk, wa ma kana lirasulin an ya'tiya bi ayatin illa bi idhni Allah, fa idha ja'a amru Allahi qudiya bil-haqqi wa khasira hunalika al-mubtilun
We sent messengers before you. Of them are those We have told you about, and of them are those We have not. No messenger could bring a sign except by the permission of Allah. When the command of Allah comes, it is judged with truth, and there the falsifiers lose.
Allahu alladhi ja'ala lakumu al-an'ama litarkabu minha wa minha ta'kulun
Allah is the One who made the livestock for you, some of them to ride and some of them you eat.
Wa lakum fiha manafi'u wa litablughu 'alayha hajatan fi sudurikum wa 'alayha wa 'ala al-fulki tuhmalun
In them you have benefits, and so that you may reach on them a need in your chests. On them and on ships you are carried.
Wa yurikum ayatihi fa ayya ayati Allahi tunkirun
He shows you His signs, so which of the signs of Allah do you deny?
Afalam yasiru fi al-ardi fayanzuru kayfa kana 'aqibatu alladhina min qablihim, kanu akthara minhum wa ashadda quwwatan wa atharan fi al-ardi fama aghna 'anhum ma kanu yaksibun
Have they not travelled the earth and seen how those before them ended? They were more numerous than them, greater in power and in the traces they left in the land, and what they earned did not help them.
When their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were pleased with the knowledge they had, and what they used to mock closed in on them.
Falamma ra'aw ba'sana qalu amanna billahi wahdahu wa kafarna bima kunna bihi mushrikin
When they saw Our punishment they said: we believe in Allah alone, and we reject what we used to set up with Him.
Falam yaku yanfa'uhum imanuhum lamma ra'aw ba'sana, sunnata Allahi allati qad khalat fi 'ibadih, wa khasira hunalika al-kafirun
Their faith did not benefit them once they saw Our punishment. That is the way of Allah that has already passed among His servants, and there the disbelievers lost.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Ghafir is eighty-five verses, chapter 40, Makki. It opens with four descriptions of Allah stacked in a single verse, and one of them is a warning placed between two mercies.
Its center is the longest speech in the Quran given by a man whose name is not recorded. A believer inside Pharaoh's own household, who had concealed his faith and chose the moment to speak. What he says, and how he says it, is the reason the surah is also known as al-Mu'min.
A man of Pharaoh's family, who concealed his faith, said: are you going to kill a man for saying my Lord is Allah?
Verses 3–20 · Four Descriptions, and the Treachery of the Eyes
Forgiver of sin, Acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, Owner of abundance.
Ghafiri adh-dhanbi wa qabili at-tawbi shadidi al-'iqabi dhi at-tawl: four in a row, and the severity sits third, between accepting repentance and owning abundance. The arrangement is the theology of the surah in one line.
Alladhina yahmiluna al-'arsha wa man hawlahu yusabbihuna bihamdi Rabbihim wa yu'minuna bihi wa yastaghfiruna lilladhina amanu: those who carry the Throne and those around it seek forgiveness for the believers. Rabbana wasi'ta kulla shay'in rahmatan wa 'ilman faghfir lilladhina tabu wattaba'u sabilak. Their prayer is quoted, and it asks for the believers, their parents, their spouses, and their offspring.
The scene is worth holding. The nearest creatures to the Throne spend their time asking for the ones furthest from it.
Ya'lamu kha'inata al-a'yuni wa ma tukhfi as-sudur: He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the chests conceal. Kha'inat al-a'yun is the glance that is denied afterward, the look that is aimed and then disowned. The Quran names the smallest deniable act in the whole catalogue of a man's behavior.
The angels at the Throne spend their time asking forgiveness for you. And He knows the glance you would deny.
Verses 28–46 · The Man Who Concealed His Faith
A believing man from the family of Pharaoh, who concealed his faith, said: are you going to kill a man for saying my Lord is Allah?
Wa qala rajulun mu'minun min ali Fir'awna yaktumu imanahu: he is inside the household. He has been concealing it, which the Quran states plainly and without criticism.
His opening argument is procedural rather than theological. Ata'quluna rajulan an yaqula Rabbiya Allahu wa qad ja'akum bil-bayyinati min Rabbikum. Are you killing a man for a statement, when he has brought you clear proofs. He argues the case they would find hardest to dismiss first.
Wa in yaku kadhiban fa'alayhi kadhibuh, wa in yaku sadiqan yusibkum ba'du alladhi ya'idukum: if he is lying, his lie is on him, and if he is truthful, some of what he promises will strike you. He gives them a cost benefit argument, in their own idiom, before he gives them anything else.
He then escalates in stages, invoking the history of Nuh, 'Ad and Thamud, warning of the Day of Calling, recalling Yusuf and the doubt that followed him, and only at the end saying what he believes outright.
Wa qala alladhi amana ya qawmi ittabi'uni ahdikum sabila ar-rashad: follow me, I will guide you to the way of right conduct. Then the line that closes the speech. Wa ufawwidu amri ila Allah, inna Allaha basirun bil-'ibad. I entrust my affair to Allah.
Fawaqahu Allahu sayyi'ati ma makaru: so Allah protected him from the evils they plotted. The protection is stated immediately after the entrusting.
He argued their way first, said what he believed last, and entrusted the outcome. Then he was protected.
Verses 56–85 · Call On Me
Call upon Me, I will respond to you.
Inna alladhina yujadiluna fi ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahum in fi sudurihim illa kibrun ma hum bibalighih: in their chests is nothing but arrogance they will never reach the object of. The diagnosis of the perpetual arguer is that the argument is not about the topic.
Lakhalqu as-samawati wal-ardi akbaru min khalqi an-nas: the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most people do not know. Scale is offered as the corrective to self importance.
Ud'uni astajib lakum, inna alladhina yastakbiruna 'an 'ibadati sayadkhuluna jahannama dakhirin: call upon Me and I will respond to you. Those too arrogant to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated. Supplication is described here as the thing arrogance prevents, which means asking is treated as the opposite of pride.
Allahu alladhi ja'ala lakumu al-layla litaskunu fih wan-nahara mubsira: He made the night for you to rest in and the day giving sight. The provision named after the invitation to ask is sleep.
The surah then walks through the nations, and closes on the moment of recognition. Falamma ra'aw ba'sana qalu amanna billahi wahdahu wa kafarna bima kunna bihi mushrikin. When they saw Our punishment they said, we believe in Allah alone. Falam yaku yanfa'uhum imanuhum lamma ra'aw ba'sana. Their faith did not benefit them once they saw it.
Sunnata Allahi allati qad khalat fi 'ibadih: the way of Allah that has already passed among His servants. The pattern is named as a law rather than as a decision made case by case.
Call on Me and I will respond. The ones who would not ask were described as too proud, not too busy.

Why This Surah Is For You
The believer in verses 28 to 44 is the model for speaking truth inside a hostile structure. He argues in their language before he argues in his. He raises the cost of being wrong before he raises the claim. And he says the thing outright only after the ground is prepared. Most men reverse that order and are dismissed in the first sentence.
Verse 19 names kha'inat al-a'yun, the treachery of the eyes. The glance you would deny if asked about it. It is the smallest deniable act available to a man, and the Quran opens the surveillance section of this surah with it rather than with anything larger.
Verse 60 sets asking and arrogance as opposites. Call on Me and I will respond, and those too arrogant to worship will enter humiliated. A man who has stopped asking for things has usually not stopped believing. He has started assuming he can handle it.
Verse 44 is the sentence to keep. I entrust my affair to Allah. He said it in a room that was about to kill him, after making every argument he had. The entrusting came after the effort, not instead of it.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Eighty-Five Verses. Entrust It After.
When you have to say a hard thing to a hostile room, structure it as he did. Their idiom first, the cost of being wrong second, your position last.
Watch the glance. Verse 19 names it, and it is the one act you can always deny to everyone except Him.
Ask for something specific this week. Verse 60 classifies not asking as arrogance rather than as strength.
Say verse 44 out loud after you have done everything you can, not before.
He made every argument he had, then entrusted the affair. And he was protected from what they plotted.
