The Surah · Fatir

Alhamdu lillahi fatiris samawati wal ardi ja'ilil mala'ikati rusulan uli ajnihatim masna wa sulasa wa ruba'; yazidu fil khalqi ma yasha'; innal laha 'ala kulli shai'in Qadir

Praise belongs to Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, who made the angels messengers with wings, two, three and four. He adds to creation what He wills. Allah has power over all things.

Ma yaftahil lahu linnasi mir rahmatin fala mumsika laha wa ma yumsik fala mursila lahu mimb'dih; wa Huwal 'Azizul Hakim

Whatever mercy Allah opens for people, none can withhold it. Whatever He withholds, none can send it after Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Ya ayyuhan nasuzkuru ni'matal lahi 'alaikum; hal min khaliqin ghairul lahi yarzuqukum minas sama'i wal ard; la ilaha illa Huwa fa anna tu'fakun

People, remember the favor of Allah upon you. Is there any creator besides Allah who provides for you from the sky and the earth? There is no god but Him. How then are you turned away?

Wa iny yukazzibuka faqad kuzzibat Rusulum min qablik; wa ilal lahi turja'ul umur

If they deny you, messengers before you were denied. To Allah all matters return.

People, the promise of Allah is true. Do not let the life of this world deceive you, and do not let the deceiver deceive you about Allah.

Innash shaitana lakum 'aduwwun fattakhizuhu 'aduwwa; innama yad'u hizbahu liyakunu min ashabis sa'ir

Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He calls his party only to be among the companions of the blaze.

Allazina kafaru lahum 'azabun shadid; wallazina amanu wa 'amilus salihati lahum maghfiratunw wa ajrun kabir

Those who disbelieve will have a severe punishment. Those who believe and do righteous deeds will have forgiveness and a great reward.

Afaman zuyyina lahu su'u 'amalihi fara ahu hasana; fa innal laha yudillu mai yasha'u wa yahdi mai yaha'u fala tazhab nafsuka 'alaihim hasarat; innal laha 'alimun bima yasna'un

Is the one whose evil deed is made attractive to him, so that he sees it as good, like the one guided? Allah leaves astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. So do not let your soul waste away in regret over them. Allah knows what they do.

Wallahul lazi arsalar riyaha fatusiru shaban fasuqnahu ila baladim maiyitin fa ahyayna bihil arda ba'da mawtiha; kazalikan nushur

It is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir up clouds. Then We drive them to a dead land and give life to the earth after its death. Such is the resurrection.

Man kana yuridul 'izzata falillahil 'izzatu jami'a; ilaihi yas'adul kalimut taiyibu wal'amalus salihu yarfa'uh; wallazina yamkurunas sayyiati lahum 'azabun shadid; wa makru ula'ika huwa yabur

Whoever wants honor should know that honor belongs entirely to Allah. To Him the good word ascends, and the righteous deed raises it. Those who plot evil deeds will have a severe punishment, and their plotting will come to nothing.

Wallahu khalaqakum min turabin summa min nutfatin summa ja'alakum azwaja; wa ma tahmilu min unsa wa la tada'u illa bi'ilmih; wa ma yu'ammaru mim mu'ammarinw wa la yunqasu min 'umurihi illa fi kitab; inna zalika 'alal lahi yasir

Allah created you from dust, then from a drop, then made you pairs. No female carries or gives birth except with His knowledge. No one is granted long life, and no one's life is shortened, except that it is in a record. That is easy for Allah.

The two bodies of water are not the same. One is fresh, sweet and pleasant to drink, and the other is salt and bitter. From each you eat fresh meat and extract ornaments you wear. You see the ships plowing through them, so that you may seek His bounty and be grateful.

Yulijul laila fin nahari wa yulijun nahara fil laili wa sakhkharash shamsa wal qamara kulluny yajri li ajalim musamma; zalikumul lahu Rabbukum lahul mulk; wallazina tad'una min dunihi ma yamlikuna min qitmir

He merges the night into the day and the day into the night, and He has made the sun and the moon subject, each running for a stated term. That is Allah, your Lord. To Him belongs the dominion. Those you call upon besides Him do not own the skin of a date stone.

In tad'uhum la yasma'u du'a'akum wa law sami'u mas tajabu lakum; wa Yawmal Qiyamati Yakfuruna bishirkikum; wa la yunabbi'uka mislu khabir

If you call them, they do not hear your call, and if they heard, they could not answer you. On the Day of Resurrection they will reject your association of them with Allah. No one informs you like One who is fully aware.

Ya ayyunhan nasu antumul fuqara'u ilallahi wallahu Huwal Ghaniyyul Hamid

People, you are the poor before Allah, and Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy.

Iny yasha yuzhibkum wa yati bikhalqin jadid

If He wills, He can remove you and bring a new creation.

Wa ma zalika 'alal lahi bi'aziz

That is not difficult for Allah.

No bearer of a burden bears the burden of another. If one heavily laden calls for help with his load, none of it will be carried, even by a close relative. You warn only those who fear their Lord unseen and establish the prayer. Whoever purifies himself does so for his own soul. To Allah is the return.

Wa ma tastawil a'ma wal basir

The blind and the seeing are not equal,

Wa laz zulumatu wa lannun

nor the darkness and the light,

Wa laz zillu wa lal harur

nor the shade and the heat,

Wa ma yastawil ahya'u wa lal amwat; innal laha yusmi'u mai yasha'u wa ma anta bimusi'im man fil qubur

nor are the living and the dead the same. Allah makes whom He wills hear, and you cannot make those in the graves hear.

In anta illa nazir

You are only a warner.

Inna arsalnak bil haqqi bashiranw wa nazira; wa im min ummatin illa khala fiha nazir

We sent you with the truth, as a bringer of good news and a warner. There is no nation but that a warner passed among them.

Wa inyukazzibuka faqad kazzabal lazina min qablihim ja'at hum Rusuluhum bilbaiyinati wa biz Zuburi wa bil Kitabil Munir

If they deny you, those before them denied. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, with scriptures and with the enlightening Book.

Summa akhaztul lazina kafaru fakaifa kana nakir

Then I seized those who disbelieved. How terrible was My rejection of them.

Alam tara annal laha anzala minas sama'i ma'an fa akhrajna bihi samaratim mukhtalifan alwanuha; wa minal jibali judadum bidunw wa humrum mukhtalifun alwanuha wa gharabibu sud

Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the sky, and We bring out with it fruits of varying colors. In the mountains are streaks of white and red, of varying shades, and others deep black.

Wa minan nasi wad dawaabbi wal an'ami mukhtalifun alwanuhu kazalik; innama yakhshal laha min 'ibadihil 'ulama'; innal laha 'Azizun Ghafur

Among people, moving creatures and cattle there are likewise varying colors. Only those of His servants who have knowledge fear Allah. Allah is Mighty, Forgiving.

Innal lazina yatluna Kitabbal lahi wa aqamus Salata wa anfaqu mimma razaqnahum sirranw wa 'ala niyatany yarjuna tijaratal lan tabur

Those who recite the Book of Allah, establish the prayer, and spend from what We provided them, secretly and openly, hope for a trade that will never perish,

Liyuwaffiyahum ujurahum wa yazidahum min fadlih; innahu Ghafurun Shakur

so that He may pay them their wages in full and increase them from His bounty. He is Forgiving, Appreciative.

Wallai awhaina ilaika minal Kitabi huwal haqqu musaddiqal lima baina yadayh; innal laha bi'ibadihi la khabirum Basir

What We revealed to you of the Book is the truth, confirming what came before it. Allah is fully aware of His servants, seeing.

Summa awrasnal Kitaballazinas tafaina min 'ibadina faminhum zalimul linafsihi wa minhum muqtasid, wa minhum sabiqum bilkhairati bi iznil lah; zalika huwal fadlul kabir

Then We gave the Book as an inheritance to those We chose from Our servants. Among them is one who wrongs himself, one who takes the middle course, and one who is foremost in good deeds by the permission of Allah. That is the great bounty.

Jannatu 'adniny yad khulunaha yuhallawna fiha min asawira min zahabinw wa lu'lu'anw wa liba suhum fiha harir

Gardens of perpetual residence, which they enter, adorned there with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments there are silk.

They say, "Praise belongs to Allah, who has removed sorrow from us. Our Lord is Forgiving, Appreciative,

who has settled us in the Home of Duration out of His bounty. No weariness touches us here, and no fatigue."

Those who disbelieve will have the fire of Hell. It is not decreed for them that they die, and its punishment is not lightened for them. That is how We repay every ungrateful one.

Wa hum yastarikhuna fiha Rabbana akhrijna na'mal salihan ghairal lazi kunna na'mal; awa lamnu 'ammirkum ma yatazak karu fihi man tazakkara wa ja'akumun naziru fazuqu fama lizzalimina min nasir

They will cry out there, "Our Lord, take us out. We will do righteous work, other than what we used to do." Did We not give you life long enough for whoever would remember to remember? And the warner came to you. So taste it. The wrongdoers have no helper.

Innal laha 'alimu ghaibis samawati wal ard; innahu 'alimum bizatis sudur

Allah knows the unseen of the heavens and the earth. He knows what is in the chests.

Huwal lazi ja'alakum khala'ifa fil ard; faman kafara fa'alaihi kufruhu; wa la yazidul kafirina kufruhum 'inda Rabbihim illa maqtanw wa la yazidul kafirina kufruhum illa khasara

He is the One who made you successors on the earth. Whoever disbelieves, his disbelief is against him. The disbelief of the disbelievers adds nothing with their Lord except displeasure, and their disbelief adds nothing except loss.

Say, "Have you considered your partners whom you call upon besides Allah? Show me what they created of the earth, or do they have a share in the heavens?" Or have We given them a Book so that they stand on clear proof from it? The wrongdoers promise one another nothing but delusion.

Innal laha yumsikus samawati wal arda an tazula; wa la'in zalata in amsa kahuma min ahadim mim ba'dih; innahu kana Haliman Ghafura

Allah holds the heavens and the earth so that they do not cease. If they were to cease, no one could hold them after Him. He is Forbearing, Forgiving.

They swore by Allah their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than any of the communities. Then when a warner came to them, it only increased them in aversion,

arrogance on the earth and the plotting of evil. Evil plotting encircles only its own people. Do they await anything but the way of the former peoples? You will find no change in the way of Allah, and you will find no alteration in the way of Allah.

Have they not traveled the earth and seen how those before them ended? They were greater than these in strength. Allah is not to be escaped by anything in the heavens or the earth. He is Knowing, Powerful.

If Allah were to take people to task for what they have earned, He would not leave a single creature on its surface. But He delays them for a stated term. When their term comes, Allah is ever seeing of His servants.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

What Opens, What Withholds, and Who Deceives

Fatir opens on the word that names it. Originator, the One who begins a thing with no pattern in front of Him. Then in verse 2 it states the economics of the entire surah in one sentence. Whatever mercy Allah opens for people, none can withhold it, and whatever He withholds, none can send it after Him. Every anxiety a man carries about access sits inside that verse. The surah then names the two things that will keep him from acting on it. Verse 5 warns against the life of this world and against the deceiver. Verse 6 identifies him and gives the instruction plainly: Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. The rest of the surah is a series of measurements, honor, weight, sight, color, knowledge, and trade, each one showing where value actually sits when a man stops guessing.

Verses 1 to 14

Honor Has One Address

Verse 10 is the verse to build on. Whoever wants honor should know that honor belongs entirely to Allah. Jamee’an, entirely, with nothing left over to be sourced elsewhere. Every man wants izzah. The verse does not treat that as a fault. It corrects the address. Then it tells you what travels upward: the good word ascends, and the righteous deed raises it. The word alone rises. The deed is what carries it. A man who speaks well and does nothing has released something with no engine under it. Verse 8 is the most uncomfortable line in the section. The one whose evil deed is made attractive to him, so that he sees it as good. This is not a man lying about himself. This is a man whose instrument is broken while he still trusts the reading. There is no internal fix for that condition, which is why the surah keeps pointing outward to revelation and to warners. Verse 13 ends with a measurement of the thing men actually rely on. Those you call upon besides Him do not own the skin of a date stone, qitmir, the thin membrane on the pit. Not a small share. Nothing at all. Verse 14 goes further. If you call them, they do not hear, and if they heard, they could not answer.

Verses 15 to 26

You Are the Poor

Verse 15 is the sentence a man should keep where he can see it. People, you are the poor before Allah, and Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy. Not you become poor in hardship. You are the poor, permanently, as a description of what you are. The strong man and the weak man are equally described. Verse 16 and verse 17 close the exit. If He wills, He can remove you and bring a new creation, and that is not difficult for Allah. Nobody here is load bearing. Verse 18 is the verse that ends the habit of borrowing standing from other people. No bearer of a burden bears the burden of another. It then adds the detail that closes the door completely: even if the heavily laden man calls a close relative, none of it will be carried. Then the four pairs in verses 19 through 22. Blind and seeing. Darkness and light. Shade and heat. Living and dead. Each pair is a thing men treat as a matter of preference and the surah treats as a difference in kind. Verse 23 then cuts the Prophet’s job down to its actual size: you are only a warner. Peace of mind for anyone who has ever tried to force another man’s heart. Verse 24 makes it universal. There is no nation but that a warner passed among them.

Verses 27 to 37

The Trade That Never Perishes

Verses 27 and 28 move through color. Fruits of varying colors, streaks of white and red in the mountains and others deep black, then people and cattle in the same sentence. The surah puts human variety in the same list as geology and botany, as evidence of one Designer working across scales. Then verse 28 lands the conclusion nobody expects from a passage about color. Only those of His servants who have knowledge fear Allah. The knowledge here is not academic. It is knowledge of what He is, and the natural result of that is khashyah, fear that comes from recognition rather than from ignorance. Verse 29 and verse 30 name the position a man should take. Those who recite the Book, establish the prayer, and spend secretly and openly, hope for a trade that will never perish, tijaratan lan tabur. Every other trade a man enters has a failure case built into it. This is named as the one that does not. Verse 32 is the honest verse. The Book was given as an inheritance to those chosen, and among them are three: one who wrongs himself, one who takes the middle course, and one who is foremost in good deeds. All three are inside the chosen group. The surah does not pretend the community is uniform, and it does not remove the first man from it. Verse 34 and verse 35 report what the people of the Garden actually say first. Praise belongs to Allah, who has removed sorrow from us. Not who gave us wealth or rank. Who removed the weight. Then, no weariness touches us here, and no fatigue. Verse 37 is the counterpart and it is the one to sit with. Our Lord, take us out, we will do righteous work. The answer is a question. Did We not give you life long enough for whoever would remember to remember? The request being denied there is not for mercy. It is for more time, which had already been granted once.

Verses 38 to 45

The Hands That Hold It Up

Verse 39 states the job. He made you successors on the earth, khala’if. A successor manages what he did not create and hands it forward. Verse 41 is the verse that resets a man’s sense of scale. Allah holds the heavens and the earth so that they do not cease, and if they were to cease, no one could hold them after Him. The stability a man builds his day on is not a property of the structure. It is an ongoing act. Verse 42 and verse 43 catch a specific self deception. They swore their strongest oaths that if a warner came, they would be more guided than anyone. Then the warner came, and it increased them in aversion. Men are confident about the version of themselves that would appear under conditions they have not yet faced. The verse says the conditions arrived and the man did not. Verse 43 gives the law that follows: evil plotting encircles only its own people, and the way of Allah does not change and is not altered. Verse 45 closes the surah with restraint rather than threat. If Allah were to take people to task for what they have earned, He would not leave a single creature on its surface. The reader is not standing on his own record. He is standing inside a delay.

The Structure · At A Glance

Forty-Five Verses. Honor Belongs Entirely to Allah.

The surah opens with the Originator and the mercy no hand can withhold, names the deceiver, and then measures everything a man reaches for. Honor has one source. The idols do not own the membrane on a date stone. The living and the dead are not the same. The one trade that cannot fail is recitation, prayer and spending. The chosen community contains three kinds of men and the surah names all three. It ends by showing the heavens held in place by an act that never pauses, and by telling the reader he is living inside a delay rather than a verdict.

The Practice · Daily Integration

Forty-Five Verses. Honor Belongs Entirely to Allah.

Verse 10. Write down the last three places you went looking for standing. Put a line through the ones that were not Allah.

Verse 29. Fix one repeatable amount you give secretly and one you give openly, and start this week.

Verse 37. Name one righteous work you have been telling yourself you will do when conditions change. Do the smallest version of it today.
