The Surah · Az-Zumar
Tanzilu al-kitabi mina Allahi al-'Azizi al-Hakim
The sending down of the Book is from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.
Inna anzalna ilayka al-kitaba bil-haqqi fa'budi Allaha mukhlisan lahu ad-din
We sent down the Book to you with the truth, so worship Allah, holding the religion purely for Him.
Ala lillahi ad-dinu al-khalis, walladhina ittakhadhu min dunihi awliya'a ma na'buduhum illa liyuqarribuna ila Allahi zulfa, inna Allaha yahkumu baynahum fi ma hum fihi yakhtalifun, inna Allaha la yahdi man huwa kadhibun kaffar
Unquestionably, the pure religion belongs to Allah. Those who take allies besides Him say: we only worship them to bring us nearer to Allah in position. Allah will judge between them about what they differ over. Allah does not guide one who is a liar and a persistent denier.
Law arada Allahu an yattakhidha waladan lastafa mimma yakhluqu ma yasha'u subhanah, huwa Allahu al-Wahidu al-Qahhar
Had Allah wanted to take a son, He would have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Glory be to Him. He is Allah, the One, the Dominant.
Khalaqa as-samawati wal-arda bil-haqq, yukawwiru al-layla 'ala an-nahari wa yukawwiru an-nahara 'ala al-layl, wa sakhkhara ash-shamsa wal-qamara kullun yajri li-ajalin musamma, ala huwa al-'Azizu al-Ghaffar
He created the heavens and the earth with truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night, and He made the sun and the moon subject, each running for a named term. He is the Mighty, the Constantly Forgiving.
Khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin thumma ja'ala minha zawjaha wa anzala lakum mina al-an'ami thamaniyata azwaj, yakhluqukum fi butuni ummahatikum khalqan min ba'di khalqin fi zulumatin thalath, dhalikumu Allahu Rabbukum lahu al-mulk, la ilaha illa huwa fa anna tusrafun
He created you from one soul, then made from it its mate, and sent down for you eight pairs of livestock. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in three darknesses. That is Allah, your Lord. To Him belongs the dominion. There is no god but Him. How are you turned away?
In takfuru fa inna Allaha ghaniyyun 'ankum wa la yarda li'ibadihi al-kufr, wa in tashkuru yardahu lakum, wa la taziru waziratun wizra ukhra, thumma ila Rabbikum marji'ukum fayunabbi'ukum bima kuntum ta'malun, innahu 'alimun bidhati as-sudur
If you disbelieve, Allah has no need of you, and He is not pleased with ingratitude from His servants. If you are grateful, He is pleased with it for you. No bearer of burdens bears the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you of what you were doing. He knows what is inside the chests.
Wa idha massa al-insana durrun da'a Rabbahu munibani ilayh, thumma idha khawwalahu ni'matan minhu nasiya ma kana yad'u ilayhi min qablu wa ja'ala lillahi andadan liyudilla 'an sabilih, qul tamatta' bikufrika qalilan innaka min ashabi an-nar
When harm touches a man he calls on his Lord, turning to Him. Then when He grants him a favor from Himself, he forgets what he was praying about before, and he sets up rivals to Allah to lead others off His way. Say: enjoy your denial a little. You are of the people of the Fire.
Is one who is devoutly obedient in the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, the same? Say: are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only those with understanding take it in.
Qul ya 'ibadi alladhina amanu ittaqu Rabbakum, lilladhina ahsanu fi hadhihi ad-dunya hasanah, wa ardu Allahi wasi'ah, innama yuwaffa as-sabiruna ajrahum bighayri hisab
Say: My servants who believed, be mindful of your Lord. For those who did well in this world there is good, and the earth of Allah is wide. The patient are given their reward in full without account.
Qul inni umirtu an a'buda Allaha mukhlisan lahu ad-din
Say: I have been commanded to worship Allah, holding the religion purely for Him.
Wa umirtu li-an akuna awwala al-muslimin
And I have been commanded to be the first of those who submit.
Qul inni akhafu in 'asaytu Rabbi 'adhaba yawmin 'azim
Say: if I disobeyed my Lord, I would fear the punishment of a great day.
Quli Allaha a'budu mukhlisan lahu dini
Say: it is Allah I worship, holding my religion purely for Him.
Fa'budu ma shi'tum min dunih, qul inna al-khasirina alladhina khasiru anfusahum wa ahlihim yawma al-qiyamah, ala dhalika huwa al-khusranu al-mubin
So worship what you want besides Him. Say: the losers are the ones who lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. That is the clear loss.
Lahum min fawqihim zulalun mina an-nari wa min tahtihim zulal, dhalika yukhawwifu Allahu bihi 'ibadah, ya 'ibadi fattaqun
Above them are canopies of fire, and below them canopies. By that Allah puts fear into His servants. My servants, be mindful of Me.
Walladhina ijtanabu at-taghuta an ya'buduha wa anabu ila Allahi lahumu al-bushra, fabashshir 'ibad
Those who kept away from false powers and did not worship them, and turned back to Allah, have good news. So give good news to My servants,
Alladhina yastami'una al-qawla fayattabi'una ahsanah, ula'ika alladhina hadahumu Allahu wa ula'ika hum ulu al-albab
those who listen to what is said and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are the people of understanding.
Afaman haqqa 'alayhi kalimatu al-'adhab, afa anta tunqidhu man fi an-nar
What of one against whom the word of punishment has come due? Can you rescue someone who is in the Fire?
Lakini alladhina ittaqaw Rabbahum lahum ghurafun min fawqiha ghurafun mabniyyatun tajri min tahtiha al-anhar, wa'da Allah, la yukhlifu Allahu al-mi'ad
But those who were mindful of their Lord have chambers, above them chambers built, with rivers running beneath them. The promise of Allah. Allah does not break the appointment.
Alam tara anna Allaha anzala mina as-sama'i ma'an fasalakahu yanabi'a fi al-ardi thumma yukhriju bihi zar'an mukhtalifan alwanuhu thumma yahiju fatarahu musfarran thumma yaj'aluhu hutama, inna fi dhalika ladhikra li-uli al-albab
Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the sky, then runs it as springs in the earth, then brings out with it crops of different colors, then they dry and you see them turned yellow, then He makes them broken debris? In that is a reminder for people of understanding.
Afaman sharaha Allahu sadrahu lil-islami fahuwa 'ala nurin min Rabbih, fawaylun lil-qasiyati qulubuhum min dhikri Allah, ula'ika fi dalalin mubin
Is one whose chest Allah has opened to Islam, so he is upon a light from his Lord, like one who is not? Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah. Those are in clear error.
Allahu nazzala ahsana al-hadithi kitaban mutashabihan mathaniya taqsha'irru minhu juludu alladhina yakhshawna Rabbahum thumma talinu juluduhum wa qulubuhum ila dhikri Allah, dhalika huda Allahi yahdi bihi man yasha', wa man yudlili Allahu fama lahu min had
Allah has sent down the best of speech, a Book consistent with itself, repeating its themes, at which the skins of those who fear their Lord shiver, then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah, by which He guides whoever He wills. Whoever Allah leaves astray has no guide.
Afaman yattaqi biwajhihi su'a al-'adhabi yawma al-qiyamah, wa qila lizzalimina dhuqu ma kuntum taksibun
Is one who shields himself with his face from the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection like one safe from it? It is said to the wrongdoers: taste what you were earning.
Those before them denied, and the punishment came to them from where they did not expect.
So Allah made them taste disgrace in this life, and the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
Wa laqad darabna lin-nasi fi hadha al-Qur'ani min kulli mathalin la'allahum yatadhakkarun
We have set out for people in this Quran every kind of example, so that they may take heed,
Qur'anan 'arabiyyan ghayra dhi 'iwajin la'allahum yattaqun
an Arabic Quran with no crookedness in it, so that they may be mindful.
Daraba Allahu mathalan rajulan fihi shuraka'u mutashakisuna wa rajulan salaman lirajulin hal yastawiyani mathala, al-hamdu lillah, bal aktharuhum la ya'lamun
Allah sets out a comparison: a man owned by partners who quarrel with each other, and a man belonging wholly to one man. Are the two equal in comparison? Praise belongs to Allah. Most of them do not know.
Innaka mayyitun wa innahum mayyitun
You are going to die, and they are going to die.
Thumma innakum yawma al-qiyamati 'inda Rabbikum takhtasimun
Then on the Day of Resurrection you will argue your case before your Lord.
Faman azlamu mimman kadhaba 'ala Allahi wa kadhdhaba bis-sidqi idh ja'ah, alaysa fi jahannama mathwan lil-kafirin
Who is more unjust than one who lies about Allah and denies the truth when it reaches him? Is there not in Hell a home for those who reject?
Walladhi ja'a bis-sidqi wa saddaqa bihi ula'ika humu al-muttaqun
The one who brought the truth and the one who accepted it, those are the mindful.
They have whatever they want with their Lord. That is the reward of those who do good,
Liyukaffira Allahu 'anhum aswa'a alladhi 'amilu wa yajziyahum ajrahum bi-ahsani alladhi kanu ya'malun
so that Allah may clear from them the worst of what they did, and give them their reward for the best of what they were doing.
Alaysa Allahu bikafin 'abdah, wa yukhawwifunaka billadhina min dunih, wa man yudlili Allahu fama lahu min had
Is Allah not sufficient for His servant? Yet they try to frighten you with those besides Him. Whoever Allah leaves astray has no guide.
Wa man yahdi Allahu fama lahu min mudill, alaysa Allahu bi'azizin dhi intiqam
Whoever Allah guides, none can lead him astray. Is Allah not Mighty, capable of retribution?
Wa la'in sa'altahum man khalaqa as-samawati wal-arda layaqulunna Allah, qul afara'aytum ma tad'una min duni Allahi in aradaniya Allahu bidurrin hal hunna kashifatu durrih, aw aradani birahmatin hal hunna mumsikatu rahmatih, qul hasbiya Allah, 'alayhi yatawakkalu al-mutawakkilun
If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will say Allah. Say: then consider what you call on besides Allah. If Allah intended harm for me, could they remove His harm? Or if He intended mercy for me, could they hold back His mercy? Say: Allah is enough for me. On Him the trusting place their trust.
Qul ya qawmi'malu 'ala makanatikum inni 'amil, fasawfa ta'lamun
Say: my people, work in your position. I am working. You will come to know
Man ya'tihi 'adhabun yukhzihi wa yahillu 'alayhi 'adhabun muqim
who receives a punishment that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment settles.
Inna anzalna 'alayka al-kitaba lin-nasi bil-haqq, famani ihtada falinafsih, wa man dalla fa innama yadillu 'alayha, wa ma anta 'alayhim biwakil
We sent down to you the Book for people with the truth. Whoever is guided, it is for himself, and whoever strays, he strays against himself. You are not a keeper over them.
Allahu yatawaffa al-anfusa hina mawtiha, wallati lam tamut fi manamiha, fayumsiku allati qada 'alayha al-mawta wa yursilu al-ukhra ila ajalin musamma, inna fi dhalika la-ayatin liqawmin yatafakkarun
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died, during their sleep. He keeps the one for which He has decreed death and releases the other until a named term. In that are signs for a people who reflect.
Ami ittakhadhu min duni Allahi shufa'a', qul awa law kanu la yamlikuna shay'an wa la ya'qilun
Or have they taken intercessors besides Allah? Say: even though they control nothing and do not understand?
Qul lillahi ash-shafa'atu jami'a, lahu mulku as-samawati wal-ard, thumma ilayhi turja'un
Say: intercession belongs entirely to Allah. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you are returned.
Wa idha dhukira Allahu wahdahu ishma'azzat qulubu alladhina la yu'minuna bil-akhirah, wa idha dhukira alladhina min dunihi idha hum yastabshirun
When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink back. When those besides Him are mentioned, they are delighted.
Quli Allahumma fatira as-samawati wal-ardi 'alima al-ghaybi wash-shahadati anta tahkumu bayna 'ibadika fi ma kanu fihi yakhtalifun
Say: Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants about what they differed over.
Wa law anna lilladhina zalamu ma fi al-ardi jami'an wa mithlahu ma'ahu laftadaw bihi min su'i al-'adhabi yawma al-qiyamah, wa bada lahum mina Allahi ma lam yakunu yahtasibun
If the wrongdoers owned everything on earth and the like of it with it, they would offer it to ransom themselves from the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. There will appear to them from Allah what they never reckoned with.
The evil of what they earned will appear to them, and what they used to mock will close in on them.
Fa idha massa al-insana durrun da'ana thumma idha khawwalnahu ni'matan minna qala innama utituhu 'ala 'ilm, bal hiya fitnatun wa lakinna aktharahum la ya'lamun
When harm touches a man he calls on Us. Then when We grant him a favor from Us, he says: I was given this because of knowledge. It is a test, but most of them do not know.
Qad qalaha alladhina min qablihim fama aghna 'anhum ma kanu yaksibun
Those before them said the same, and what they earned did not help them.
The evil of what they earned struck them. The wrongdoers among these will also be struck by the evil of what they earn, and they cannot escape.
Awa lam ya'lamu anna Allaha yabsutu ar-rizqa liman yasha'u wa yaqdir, inna fi dhalika la-ayatin liqawmin yu'minun
Do they not know that Allah expands provision for whoever He wills and restricts it? In that are signs for a people who believe.
Qul ya 'ibadiya alladhina asrafu 'ala anfusihim la taqnatu min rahmati Allah, inna Allaha yaghfiru adh-dhunuba jami'a, innahu huwa al-Ghafuru ar-Rahim
Say: My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Allah forgives all sins together. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Turn back to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes to you, for then you will not be helped.
Wattabi'u ahsana ma unzila ilaykum min Rabbikum min qabli an ya'tiyakumu al-'adhabu baghtatan wa antum la tash'urun
Follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord before the punishment comes to you suddenly while you do not notice,
An taqula nafsun ya hasrata 'ala ma farrattu fi janbi Allahi wa in kuntu lamina as-sakhirin
lest a soul say: oh my regret over what I neglected regarding Allah, and I was one of the mockers,
Aw taqula law anna Allaha hadani lakuntu mina al-muttaqin
or say: had Allah guided me, I would have been of the mindful,
Aw taqula hina tara al-'adhaba law anna li karratan fa akuna mina al-muhsinin
or say, when it sees the punishment: if only I had another turn, I would be of those who do good.
Bala qad ja'atka ayati fakadhdhabta biha wastakbarta wa kunta mina al-kafirin
No. My signs came to you and you denied them, and you were arrogant, and you were of those who reject.
Wa yawma al-qiyamati tara alladhina kadhabu 'ala Allahi wujuhuhum muswaddah, alaysa fi jahannama mathwan lil-mutakabbirin
On the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied about Allah with their faces darkened. Is there not in Hell a home for the arrogant?
Allah will deliver those who were mindful to their place of safety. No harm will touch them, and they will not grieve.
Allahu khaliqu kulli shay'in wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in wakil
Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Guardian over all things.
Lahu maqalidu as-samawati wal-ard, walladhina kafaru bi-ayati Allahi ula'ika humu al-khasirun
To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. Those who reject the signs of Allah are the losers.
Qul afaghayra Allahi ta'muruni a'budu ayyuha al-jahilun
Say: is it other than Allah you order me to worship, you who are ignorant?
It has been revealed to you and to those before you: if you set up a partner with Allah, your work will collapse and you will be of the losers.
Bali Allaha fa'bud wa kun mina ash-shakirin
Rather, worship Allah and be of the grateful.
Wa ma qadaru Allaha haqqa qadrihi wal-ardu jami'an qabdatuhu yawma al-qiyamati was-samawatu matwiyyatun biyaminih, subhanahu wa ta'ala 'amma yushrikun
They did not measure Allah with His true measure. The whole earth will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens folded in His right hand. Glory be to Him, far above what they associate with Him.
Wa nufikha fi as-suri fasa'iqa man fi as-samawati wa man fi al-ardi illa man sha'a Allah, thumma nufikha fihi ukhra fa idha hum qiyamun yanzurun
The Trumpet is blown, and everyone in the heavens and everyone on the earth falls senseless, except whoever Allah wills. Then it is blown again, and they are standing, looking on.
Wa ashraqati al-ardu binuri Rabbiha wa wudi'a al-kitabu wa ji'a bin-nabiyyina wash-shuhada'i wa qudiya baynahum bil-haqqi wa hum la yuzlamun
The earth will shine with the light of its Lord, the record will be laid down, the prophets and the witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them with truth, and they will not be wronged.
Wa wuffiyat kullu nafsin ma 'amilat wa huwa a'lamu bima yaf'alun
Every soul will be paid in full for what it did, and He knows best what they were doing.
Wa siqa alladhina kafaru ila jahannama zumara, hatta idha ja'uha futihat abwabuha wa qala lahum khazanatuha alam ya'tikum rusulun minkum yatluna 'alaykum ayati Rabbikum wa yundhirunakum liqa'a yawmikum hadha, qalu bala wa lakin haqqat kalimatu al-'adhabi 'ala al-kafirin
Those who disbelieved are driven to Hell in throngs. When they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers say to them: did messengers not come to you from among yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours? They say: yes, but the word of punishment came due against those who reject.
Qila udkhulu abwaba jahannama khalidina fiha, fabi'sa mathwa al-mutakabbirin
It is said: enter the gates of Hell, to remain in it. Wretched is the home of the arrogant.
Wa siqa alladhina ittaqaw Rabbahum ila al-jannati zumara, hatta idha ja'uha wa futihat abwabuha wa qala lahum khazanatuha salamun 'alaykum tibtum fadkhuluha khalidin
Those who were mindful of their Lord are driven to the Garden in throngs. When they reach it, and its gates have been opened, its keepers say to them: peace be upon you, you have become good, so enter it to remain.
Wa qalu al-hamdu lillahi alladhi sadaqana wa'dahu wa awrathana al-arda natabawwa'u mina al-jannati haythu nasha', fani'ma ajru al-'amilin
They say: praise belongs to Allah, who kept His promise to us and gave us the land to inherit, so we settle in the Garden wherever we wish. Excellent is the reward of those who worked.
Wa tara al-mala'ikata haffina min hawli al-'arshi yusabbihuna bihamdi Rabbihim, wa qudiya baynahum bil-haqqi wa qila al-hamdu lillahi Rabbi al-'alamin
You will see the angels encircling the Throne, glorifying their Lord with praise. It will be judged between them with truth, and it will be said: praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Az-Zumar is seventy-five verses, chapter 39, Makki. It is named after the groups that move at the end of it, driven in throngs to one of two destinations, and the whole surah is arranged to explain what sorts a man into one throng or the other.
The sorting principle is stated in the third verse and it is not deeds. It is ikhlas, whether the religion is held purely for Him or held with something else mixed in. The surah then contains the single most expansive verse of hope in the Quran, in verse 53, which Ibn Kathir records as the verse the early scholars turned to for anyone who thought he had gone too far.
Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah.
Verses 3–22 · Purely His, and the Two Kinds
Unquestionably, the pure religion belongs to Allah.
Ala lillahi ad-dinu al-khalis: khalis is what is left when everything foreign has been removed. The claim is about ownership of a category, not about a practice.
Walladhina ittakhadhu min dunihi awliya'a ma na'buduhum illa liyuqarribuna ila Allahi zulfa: those who take allies besides Him say, we only worship them to bring us nearer to Allah in position. The justification is quoted, and it is a religious justification. Nobody in the verse thinks he is abandoning God.
Khalaqakum min nafsin wahidah, yakhluqukum fi butuni ummahatikum khalqan min ba'di khalqin fi zulumatin thalath: He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in three darknesses. The staging of the formation is described from inside a place nobody has ever seen.
Wa idha massa al-insana durrun da'a Rabbahu munibani ilayh, thumma idha khawwalahu ni'matan minhu nasiya ma kana yad'u ilayhi min qabl: when harm touches him he calls on his Lord turning to Him, then when He grants him a favor from Himself, he forgets what he was praying about before. The forgetting is placed immediately after the answer.
Amman huwa qanitun ana'a al-layli sajidan wa qa'iman yahdharu al-akhirata wa yarju rahmata Rabbih, qul hal yastawi alladhina ya'lamuna walladhina la ya'lamun: is one who is devoutly obedient in the hours of the night, prostrating and standing, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, the same. Say, are those who know equal to those who do not know. The question about knowledge follows a description of night worship, which means the knowledge in question is the kind that gets a man out of bed.
Innama yuwaffa as-sabiruna ajrahum bighayri hisab: the patient are given their reward without account. Every other reward in the Quran is measured. This one is uncounted.
The pure religion is His alone. And the reward for patience is the one thing handed over without being counted.
Verses 29–42 · One Owner, and the Two Deaths
A man belonging to quarrelling partners, and a man belonging wholly to one man. Are they equal in comparison?
Daraba Allahu mathalan rajulan fihi shuraka'u mutashakisuna wa rajulan salaman lirajul: a slave owned by several partners who are at odds with each other, against a slave belonging to one man. Hal yastawiyani mathala. Are the two equal in likeness.
The parable is about workload and peace of mind. The first man cannot satisfy anyone because the instructions conflict. This is the Quran describing divided loyalty in the terms of a man's daily experience rather than in the terms of doctrine.
Innaka mayyitun wa innahum mayyitun: you are going to die and they are going to die. Said to the Prophet ﷺ himself, in the plainest possible construction.
Allahu yatawaffa al-anfusa hina mawtiha, wallati lam tamut fi manamiha: Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not died, during their sleep. Fayumsiku allati qada 'alayha al-mawta wa yursilu al-ukhra ila ajalin musamma. He keeps the one for which He has decreed death and releases the other until a named term.
Every night is described as a transaction in which the soul is taken and some are not returned. The verse ends, inna fi dhalika la-ayatin liqawmin yatafakkarun, in that are signs for a people who reflect.
Two masters who disagree, against one owner. And every night the soul is handed over and only some are sent back.
Verses 53–75 · Do Not Despair, and the Throngs
O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah.
Qul ya 'ibadiya alladhina asrafu 'ala anfusihim la taqnatu min rahmati Allah: the address is ya 'ibadi, My servants, spoken to people described as having gone to excess against themselves. He calls them His servants in the same breath as naming what they did.
Inna Allaha yaghfiru adh-dhunuba jami'a: He forgives all sins, together. Innahu huwa al-ghafuru ar-rahim. Ibn Kathir records that this verse was revealed for a group who thought their past excluded them, and that the scholars of the salaf treated it as the widest verse of hope in the Book.
The verses immediately following close the loophole. Turn back to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes. The mercy is unbounded and the window is not.
An taqula nafsun ya hasrata 'ala ma farrattu fi janbi Allah: lest a soul say, oh my regret over what I neglected regarding Allah. The regret is quoted in advance, which is the same technique Al-Fath used with the excuse.
Wa ma qadaru Allaha haqqa qadrih, wal-ardu jami'an qabdatuhu yawma al-qiyamah: they did not measure Allah with His true measure, and the whole earth will be in His grip on the Day of Resurrection.
Then the sorting. Wa siqa alladhina kafaru ila jahannama zumara, until they arrive and its gates are opened and its keepers ask, did messengers not come to you. And wa siqa alladhina ittaqaw Rabbahum ila al-jannati zumara, until they arrive and its gates are opened and its keepers say salamun 'alaykum tibtum fadkhuluha khalidin. Peace be upon you, you have become good, so enter it to remain.
Notice the difference in the two arrivals. At the Fire the gates are opened when they arrive. At the Garden the gates are already being opened for them, and they are greeted before they enter.
Two throngs, two sets of gates, and one greeting given before the door is even reached.

Why This Surah Is For You
Verse 53 is the verse to have ready for anyone who believes he is past the point of return, including yourself on a bad day. He addresses them as My servants while naming their excess, and forgives all sins together. Then the next verses attach the only condition, which is time, not scale.
Verse 29 describes divided loyalty as a labor problem. A man serving partners who disagree cannot satisfy any of them, and the exhaustion is the argument. Anyone running his life for several audiences at once already knows what that verse feels like.
Verse 10 is the only reward in the Quran given bighayri hisab, without measure. It is given for patience. Every other return is counted.
Verse 42 reframes sleep. The soul is taken every night and only some are released back. Whatever you leave unfinished tonight, you are relying on a transaction the verse describes as discretionary.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Seventy-Five Verses. Hold It Purely.
Audit one act of worship this week for what is mixed into it. Verse 3 is about what is left after the foreign material is removed.
Read verse 53 to someone who thinks he is finished. That is what it was revealed for.
Ask verse 29 of your own week. How many partners are issuing you instructions, and do they agree.
Say the sleep verse, verse 42, before bed once. It is a handover, and the return is not owed to you.
Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. He forgives all of it, together. The only limit named is the clock.
