The Surah · As-Saff
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth glorifies Allah. He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
You who believe, why do you say what you do not do?
Kabura maqtan 'inda Allahi an taqulu ma la taf'alun
Greatly hateful in the sight of Allah is that you say what you do not do.
Inna Allaha yuhibbu alladhina yuqatiluna fi sabilihi saffan ka-annahum bunyanun marsus
Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a rank, as though they were a welded structure.
Wa idh qala Musa liqawmihi ya qawmi lima tu'dhunani wa qad ta'lamuna anni rasulu Allahi ilaykum, falamma zaghu azagha Allahu qulubahum, wallahu la yahdi al-qawma al-fasiqin
And when Musa said to his people: my people, why do you hurt me when you know that I am the messenger of Allah to you? So when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. Allah does not guide a people who defy Him.
Wa idh qala 'Isa ibnu Maryama ya Bani Isra'ila inni rasulu Allahi ilaykum musaddiqan lima bayna yadayya mina at-Tawrati wa mubashshiran bi-rasulin ya'ti min ba'di ismuhu Ahmad, falamma ja'ahum bil-bayyinati qalu hadha sihrun mubin
And when Isa the son of Maryam said: children of Israel, I am the messenger of Allah to you, confirming what came before me of the Torah and announcing a messenger who comes after me whose name is Ahmad. Then when he came to them with the clear proofs they said: this is plain magic.
Wa man azlamu mimmani iftara 'ala Allahi al-kadhiba wa huwa yud'a ila al-Islam, wallahu la yahdi al-qawma az-zalimin
Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah while he is being called to Islam? Allah does not guide a wrongdoing people.
Yuriduna liyutfi'u nura Allahi bi-afwahihim wallahu mutimmu nurihi wa law kariha al-kafirun
They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, and Allah will complete His light even if the deniers hate it.
Huwa alladhi arsala rasulahu bil-huda wa dini al-haqqi liyuzhirahu 'ala ad-dini kullihi wa law kariha al-mushrikun
He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religion, even if those who associate partners hate it.
Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu hal adullukum 'ala tijaratin tunjikum min 'adhabin alim
You who believe, shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment?
Tu'minuna billahi wa rasulihi wa tujahiduna fi sabili Allahi bi-amwalikum wa anfusikum, dhalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum ta'lamun
You believe in Allah and His Messenger, and you strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your persons. That is better for you, if you knew.
Yaghfir lakum dhunubakum wa yudkhilkum jannatin tajri min tahtiha al-anharu wa masakina tayyibatan fi jannati 'Adn, dhalika al-fawzu al-'azim
He will forgive you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow, and to pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great success.
Wa ukhra tuhibbunaha, nasrun mina Allahi wa fathun qarib, wa bashshiri al-mu'minin
And another thing you love: help from Allah and an imminent victory. Give good news to the believers.
Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu kunu ansara Allahi kama qala 'Isa ibnu Maryama lil-hawariyyina man ansari ila Allah, qala al-hawariyyuna nahnu ansaru Allah, fa-amanat ta'ifatun min Bani Isra'ila wa kafarat ta'ifah, fa-ayyadna alladhina amanu 'ala 'aduwwihim fa-asbahu zahirin
You who believe, be helpers of Allah, as Isa the son of Maryam said to the disciples: who are my helpers toward Allah? The disciples said: we are the helpers of Allah. So a group of the children of Israel believed and a group denied. We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah As-Saff is fourteen verses, chapter 61, Madani. It is short, and it is built around one sentence that most men would rather not read. Why do you say what you do not do. The Quran does not soften it, and the verse after it raises the temperature rather than lowering it.
The rest of the surah gives the alternative. A rank that holds like a welded structure, two prophets whose people damaged them from the inside, and a transaction described in the vocabulary of commerce, offered to men who are told plainly what they are buying and what it costs.
Why do you say what you do not do. Everything else in the surah is the shape of a man who does not have that gap.
Verses 2–4 · The Gap, and the Structure
Why do you say what you do not do? Greatly hateful in the sight of Allah is that you say what you do not do.
Lima taquluna ma la taf'alun: the question form is doing work. It is asked rather than asserted, which puts the reader in the position of answering.
Kabura maqtan 'inda Allahi an taqulu ma la taf'alun: greatly hateful in the sight of Allah. Maqt is a heavy word, stronger than dislike, closer to loathing. The Quran does not usually spend this weight on a communication failure. It spends it here because the gap between speech and action is treated as a structural fault, not a personal flaw.
Inna Allaha yuhibbu alladhina yuqatiluna fi sabilihi saffan ka-annahum bunyanun marsus: He loves those who fight in His cause in a rank, as though they were a welded structure. Marsus describes something bonded so that the parts cannot be separated.
The two ideas are placed together deliberately. A man whose word does not match his action cannot hold a line, because everyone beside him has to allow for the gap. The integrity verse and the formation verse are the same verse read twice.
The gap between what you say and what you do is not a private failing. The next verse describes a line that cannot hold if you have it.
Verses 5–7 · Damaged From Inside
Musa said to his people: why do you hurt me when you know I am the messenger of Allah to you?
Ya qawmi lima tu'dhunani: the harm named is not from the enemy. It comes from his own people, and the surah puts it in his own voice.
Falamma zaghu azagha Allahu qulubahum: when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. The sequence is stated in that order. The deviation came first as a choice, and then it became a condition.
Wa idh qala 'Isa ibnu Maryama ya Bani Isra'il inni rasulu Allahi ilaykum musaddiqan lima bayna yadayya mina at-Tawrati wa mubashshiran bi-rasulin ya'ti min ba'di ismuhu Ahmad: confirming what came before him and announcing a messenger after him named Ahmad. The chain is presented as continuous, each link naming the next.
Wa man azlamu mimmani iftara 'ala Allahi al-kadhib: and who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah. The warning sits directly after the announcement, which is where the temptation to invent is highest.
Both prophets were damaged by their own side. The deviation was chosen before it was confirmed.
Verses 8–9 · Mouths and Light
They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, and Allah will perfect His light even if the deniers hate it.
Yuridu an yutfi'u nura Allahi bi-afwahihim: with their mouths. The instrument named is speech, which is the actual instrument. Not armies. Talk.
Wallahu mutimmu nurih: Allah will complete His light. The verb is of completion rather than defense. The response to the campaign is not protection, it is finishing the thing they are trying to stop.
Wa law kariha al-kafirun: even if they hate it. The hatred is acknowledged as real and then treated as irrelevant to the outcome.
Huwa alladhi arsala rasulahu bil-huda wa dini al-haqq liyuzhirahu 'ala ad-dini kullih: sent with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religion.
They blow at it with their mouths. He does not shield the light. He completes it.
Verses 10–14 · The Trade
Shall I guide you to a trade that will save you from a painful punishment?
Hal adullukum 'ala tijaratin tunjikum min 'adhabin alim: the offer is framed as a trade, and the audience is told the return before the price. Salvation from a painful punishment.
Tu'minuna billahi wa rasulih wa tujahiduna fi sabili Allahi bi-amwalikum wa anfusikum: belief, then striving with your wealth and your persons. Wealth is named before self, which is the order that matches how men actually resist.
Dhalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum ta'lamun: that is better for you if you knew. The verse concedes that the valuation is not obvious.
Yaghfir lakum dhunubakum wa yudkhilkum jannatin tajri min tahtiha al-anhar: forgiveness, gardens, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. Then verse 13 adds something for now. Wa ukhra tuhibbunaha, nasrun mina Allahi wa fathun qarib. And another thing you love, help from Allah and an imminent victory. The immediate return is named as a second item, not as the headline.
Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu kunu ansara Allah: be helpers of Allah, as the disciples answered Isa when he asked who would be his helpers toward Allah.
The return is stated before the price, and the thing you actually want is listed second.

Why This Surah Is For You
Verse 3 is the verse for a man whose words travel further than his actions. The Quran attaches maqt to it, a word of loathing, and it does that because the gap is not a private inconsistency. It is a structural defect, and the next verse explains why by describing a formation that cannot hold with it.
Verse 4 is the standard for any team you build. Bunyanun marsus, a welded structure, is not a metaphor about enthusiasm. It describes parts that cannot be separated under load. Men with a gap between speech and action cannot be welded to anything.
Verse 5 says the deviation came first and the hardening followed. Falamma zaghu azagha Allahu qulubahum. That order matters for anyone who wonders how a person ends up unable to hear the obvious. It was a direction chosen before it became a condition.
Verses 10 to 13 are the correct order of a proposition. The return first, the price second, and the thing you actually want, help and an imminent victory, listed last as a bonus rather than the pitch. Any offer that reverses that order is selling you something else.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Fourteen Verses. Say Less, Do It.
Audit one gap this week. Find a thing you have said publicly and not done, and either do it or stop saying it.
Read verse 4 before you build a team. Welded means the parts cannot separate under load, and the gap in verse 3 is what separates them.
Watch the sequence in verse 5 in yourself. Deviation is chosen first. The inability to hear comes after, and it arrives quietly.
Take the trade in verses 10 and 11 literally. Wealth is named before self because it is the harder one to move.
Why do you say what you do not do. Close that, and you can stand in a line that holds.
