The adulteress and the adulterer, lash each of them one hundred lashes. Do not let pity for them take hold of you in the religion of Allah, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.

Wa yadra'u anhal 'azaaba an tashhada arba'a shahaa daatim billaahi innahu laminal kaazibin

Those who came with the slander are a group among you. Do not think it is bad for you. It is good for you. Every man among them will carry what he earned of the sin, and the one who took the greater part of it will have a great punishment.

Law laaa iz sami'tumuhu zannal mu'minuna walmu'minaatu bi anfusihim khairanw wa qaalu haazaaa ifkum mmubin

Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and believing women not think well of their own people and say, “This is a clear slander”?

Law laa jaaa'u 'alaihi bi-arba'ati shuhadaaa' fa iz lam yaatu bishshuhadaaa'i fa ulaaa 'ika 'indal laahi humul kaazibun

Why did they not bring four witnesses for it? Since they did not bring the witnesses, they are the liars in the sight of Allah.

Iz talaqqawnahu bi alsinatikum wa taquluna bi afwaahikum maa laisa lakum bihi 'ilmunw wa tahsabu nahu haiyinanw wa huwa 'indl laahi 'azim

when you received it on your tongues and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, and you thought it was a small thing, while with Allah it was enormous.

Wa law laaa iz sami'tu muhu qultum maa yakunu lanaaa an natakallama bihaazaa Subhaanaka haaza buhtaanun 'azim

Why, when you heard it, did you not say, “It is not for us to speak of this. Glory to You, this is a great slander”?

Allah instructs you never to return to the like of it again, if you are believers.

Wa law laa fadlul laahi 'alaikum wa rahmatuhu wa annal laaha Ra'ufur Rahim

Were it not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, and that Allah is Kind, Merciful.

You who believe, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Whoever follows the footsteps of Satan, he commands indecency and what is wrong. Were it not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, not one of you would ever be purified, but Allah purifies whom He wills. Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

And let not those of virtue and wealth among you swear not to give to relatives, the poor, and those who emigrated in the way of Allah. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

on the Day their tongues, their hands and their feet bear witness against them for what they used to do.

Corrupt words are for corrupt men, and corrupt men are for corrupt words. Good words are for good men, and good men are for good words. Those are free of what they say. For them is forgiveness and generous provision.

You who believe, do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted their people. That is better for you, so that you may remember.

If you find no one in them, do not enter until permission is given to you. If it is said to you, “Go back,” then go back. That is purer for you. Allah is Knowing of what you do.

Qul lilmu' minina yaghuuddu min absaarihim wa yahfazu furujahum zaalika azkaa lahum innallaaha khabirum bimaa yasna'un

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Allah is Aware of what they do.

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and not to display their adornment except what ordinarily appears of it, and to draw their coverings over their chests, and not to display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, those their right hands possess, male attendants without desire, or children not yet aware of women’s nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. Turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, believers, so that you may succeed.

Marry off the single among you, and the righteous among your male and female servants. If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty. Allah is Encompassing, Knowing.

And let those who cannot find marriage keep themselves chaste until Allah enriches them from His bounty. As for those your right hands possess who seek a contract of freedom, make the contract with them if you know good in them, and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. Do not compel your slave women to prostitution, if they desire chastity, in order to seek the goods of this life. Whoever compels them, then Allah, after their compulsion, is Forgiving, Merciful.

We have sent down to you clear verses, and an example of those who passed on before you, and a lesson for those mindful of Allah.

Allaahu nurus samaawaati wal ard masalu nurihi kamishkaatin fihaa misbaah almisbaahu fi zujaajatin azzujaajatu ka annahaa kawkabun durriyyuny yuqadu min shajaratim mubaarakatin zaitunatil laa shariqiyyatinw wa laa gharbiyyatiny yakaadu zaituhaa yudie'u wa law alm tamsashu naar nurun 'alaa nur yahdil laahu linurihi mai yashaaa' wa yadribul laahul amsaala linnaas wallaahu bikulli shai'in Alim

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is a niche in which there is a lamp. The lamp is in glass. The glass is like a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost give light even if no fire touched it. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. Allah presents examples for people. Allah is Knowing of all things.

Fi buyutin azinal laahu an turfa'a wa yuzkara fihasmuhu yusabbihu lahu fihaa bilghuduwwi wal aasaal

In houses which Allah has permitted to be raised, and in which His name is remembered, He is glorified in them, morning and evening,

Rinjaalul laa tulhihim tijaaratunw wa laa bai'un 'an zikril laahi wa iqaamis Salaati wa itaaa'iz Zakaati yakkhaafuna Yawman tataqallabu fihil qulubu wal absaar

by men whom neither trade nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah, from establishing the prayer, and from giving the zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will turn about,

Liyajziyahumul laahu ahsana maa 'amilu wa yazidahum min fadlih wal laahu yarzuqu mai yashaaa'u bighairi hisaab

so that Allah may reward them for the best of what they did, and increase them from His bounty. Allah provides for whom He wills without measure.

Wallazina kafaruo a'maaluhum kasaraabim biqi'atiny yahsabuhuz zamaanu maaa'an hattaaa izaa jaaa'ahu lam yajid hu shai'anw wa wajadal laaha 'indahu fa waffaahu hisaabah wallaahu sari'ul hisaab

As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a plain, which the thirsty man takes for water, until he comes to it and finds it to be nothing, and finds Allah with him, who pays him his account in full. Allah is swift in reckoning.

Or like darknesses in a deep sea, covered by a wave, above it a wave, above it clouds. Darknesses, one above another. When he puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. Whoever Allah does not give light has no light.

Alam tara annal laaha yusabbihu lahu man fissamaawaati wal ardi wat tairu saaaffaatim kullun qad 'alima Salaatahu wa tasbihah wallaahu 'alimum bimaa yaf'alun

Do you not see that Allah is glorified by whoever is in the heavens and the earth, and by the birds with wings spread? Each knows its prayer and its glorification. Allah is Knowing of what they do.

Wa lillaahi mulkus samaawaati wal ardi wa ilal laahil masir

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to Allah is the destination.

Alam tara annal laaha yuzji sahaaban summa yu'allifu bainahu summa yaj'aluhu rukaaman fataral wadqa yakhruju min khilaalihi wa yunazzilu minas samaaa'i min jibaalin fihaa mim barain fa yusibu bihi mai yashaaa'u wa yasrifuhu 'am mai yashaaa'u yakkaadu sanaa barqihi yazhabu bil absaar

Do you not see that Allah drives clouds, then joins them together, then makes them into a mass, and you see the rain emerging from within it? And He sends down from the sky mountains of clouds containing hail, and strikes with it whom He wills and turns it away from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost takes away the sight.

Allah turns the night and the day about. In that is a lesson for those with sight.

Wallaahu khalaqa kulla daaabbatim mim maaa'in faminhum mai yamshi 'alaa batnihi wa minhum mai yamshi 'alaa rijlaine wa minhum mai yamshi 'alaaa arba' yakhluqul laahu maa yashaaa' innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadir

Allah created every moving creature from water. Among them are those that walk on their bellies, and those that walk on two legs, and those that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills. Allah has power over all things.

Laqad anzalnaaa Aayaatim mubaiyinaat wallaahu yahdi mai yashaaa'u ilaa Siraatim Mustaqim

We have sent down clear verses. Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.

Wa yaquluna aamannaa billaahi wa bir Rasuli wa ata'naa summa yatawallaa fariqum minhum mim ba'di zaalik wa maaa ulaaa'ika bilmu'minin

They say, “We believe in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obey.” Then a party of them turns away after that. Those are not believers.

Wa izaa du'uo ilal laahi wa Rasulihi li yahkuma bainahum izaa fariqum minhum mu'ridun

When they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, a party of them turns away.

Wa iny-yakul lahumul haqqu yaatuo ilaihi muz'inin

But if the right is theirs, they come to him in submission.

Afi qulubihim ma radun amirtaabuo am yakhaafuna ani yahifallaahu 'alaihim wa Rasuluh bal ulaaa'ika humuz zaalimun

Is there sickness in their hearts, or do they doubt, or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger will be unjust to them? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers.

Innamaa kaana qawlal mu'minina izaa du'uo ilal laahi wa Rasulihi li yahkuma bainahum ai yaqulu sami'naa wa ata'naa wa ulaaa'ika humul muflihun

The only words of the believers, when they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, are that they say, “We hear and we obey.” Those are the successful.

Wa mai yuti'il laaha wa Rasulahu wa yakhshal laaha wa yattaqhi fa ulaaa'ika humul faaa'izun

Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, and fears Allah and is mindful of Him, those are the triumphant.

Wa aqsamu billaahi jahda aimaanihim la'in amartahum la yakhrujunna qul laa tuqsimu taa'atum ma'rufah innal laaha khabirum bimaa ta'malun

They swear by Allah their strongest oaths that if you ordered them, they would go out. Say, “Do not swear. Known obedience is expected. Allah is Aware of what you do.”

Qul ati'ul laaha wa ati'ur Rasula fa in tawallaw fa innamaa 'alaihi maa hummila wa 'alaikum maa hummiltum wa in tuti'uhu tahtadu wa maa'alar Rasuli illal balaaghul mubin

Say, “Obey Allah and obey the Messenger.” If you turn away, then upon him is what he was charged with, and upon you is what you were charged with. If you obey him, you will be guided. Nothing is upon the Messenger except clear delivery.

Allah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely make them successors in the land, as He made successors of those before them, and that He will establish for them their religion which He has approved for them, and that He will exchange their fear for security. They worship Me and associate nothing with Me. Whoever disbelieves after that, those are the defiantly disobedient.

Establish the prayer, give the zakat, and obey the Messenger, so that you may receive mercy.

Laa tahsabannal lazina kafaru mu'jizina fil ard wa maawaahumun Naaru wa labi'sal masir

Do not think that those who disbelieve can escape on the earth. Their refuge is the Fire, and it is an evil destination.

You who believe, let those your right hands possess and those among you who have not reached puberty ask permission of you at three times: before the dawn prayer, when you put aside your garments at noon, and after the night prayer. Three times of privacy for you. There is no blame on you or on them at other times, moving about among one another. That is how Allah makes the verses clear to you. Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Wa izaa balaghal atfaalu minkumul huluma fal yastaazinu kamas taazanal lazina min qablihim kazaalika yubaiyinul laahu lakum Aayaatih wallaahu 'Alimun Hakim

When the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission as those before them asked permission. That is how Allah makes His verses clear to you. Allah is Knowing, Wise.

There is no blame upon elderly women who have no hope of marriage if they put aside their outer garments, without displaying adornment. But to be modest is better for them. Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

There is no blame upon the blind, nor upon the lame, nor upon the ill, nor upon yourselves, if you eat from your own houses, or the houses of your fathers, your mothers, your brothers, your sisters, your paternal uncles, your paternal aunts, your maternal uncles, your maternal aunts, or from houses whose keys you hold, or from the house of your friend. There is no blame on you whether you eat together or separately. When you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. That is how Allah makes the verses clear to you, so that you may reason.

The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and who, when they are with him on a matter of common concern, do not leave until they have asked his permission. Those who ask your permission are the ones who believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for some affair of theirs, give permission to whom you will among them, and ask forgiveness for them from Allah. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Do not treat the calling of the Messenger among you as you treat one another’s calling. Allah knows those among you who slip away under cover. Let those who go against his command beware, that a trial may strike them, or a painful punishment.

Alaaa inna lillaahi maa fis samaawaati wal ardi qad ya'lamu maaa antum 'alaihi wa Yawma yurja'una ilaihi fa yunaabi 'uhum bimaa 'amilu wallaahu bikulli shai'in 'Alim

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. He knows what you are upon, and the Day they will be returned to Him, He will inform them of what they did. Allah is Knowing of all things.

What This Surah Means

Overview

A Surah About What Happens in Private.

An-Nur opens by announcing itself. Verse 1 says it was sent down and made obligatory, faradnaha, which no other surah says about itself. What follows governs the parts of life nobody supervises: what a man says about a woman he cannot prove anything about, what he repeats after he hears it, how he enters another man’s house, where he puts his eyes, and what he does about the single people in his care. In the middle of all of it, at verse 35, sits the verse about light, and its placement is the argument. The light is described in a house, in a niche, in a lamp, in glass. Interior, protected, and steady. The surah is about the conditions under which that light can survive in a man, and every law around it is a wall built to keep something burning.

Verses 1 to 26

You Thought It Was a Small Thing.

Verse 4 is the verse that governs speech about people. A man who accuses a chaste woman and cannot produce four witnesses receives eighty lashes and his testimony is never accepted again. Read that penalty against the difficulty of the evidence. The standard is set so high that the practical effect is a near total ban on the accusation, and the punishment falls on the accuser. This is a law that protects reputation by making the cost of a rumor land on the man who started it. Verses 11 through 20 then deal with a specific slander that ran through Madinah and touched the household of the Prophet, peace be upon him. What is most useful in the passage is that it does not only condemn the men who invented it. It interrogates the ordinary believers who passed it along. Verse 12 asks why they did not think well of their own people. Verse 15 is the sentence to carry. You received it on your tongues and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, and you thought it was a small thing, while with Allah it was enormous. Hayyinan, a light matter. That is the exact self assessment of a man repeating something in a group chat. Verse 16 gives him the words he should have used instead, ready made. It is not for us to speak of this. Verse 19 goes past speech to appetite. Those who love that indecency should spread among the believers. Not those who spread it. Those who love that it spread, which is a condition of the heart that shows up long before anything is typed. Then verse 11 needs to be read again after all of that, because of what it says at the start. Do not think it is bad for you. It is good for you. A public disaster that humiliated a household is named as good for the community, and the community is not told why except that the law and the sorting came out of it. Verse 22 is the human peak of the passage. A man of means had sworn to cut off support to a relative who had joined in the slander. Al-Bukhari records that this verse came down about Abu Bakr, and that he resumed the support after hearing it. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? The argument is not that the offense was small. It is that the man withholding forgiveness is himself standing in line for it.

Verses 27 to 34

Ask, and If They Say Go Back, Go Back.

Verse 27 makes permission a condition of entry, and verse 28 finishes it in a way that leaves no room for the offended ego. If it is said to you, “Go back,” then go back. That is purer for you. No explanation is owed, none is to be demanded, and the man turned away is told the turning away purifies him. A household’s right to be closed is stronger than a visitor’s right to be received. Verse 30 and verse 31 then legislate the gaze, and the order matters. The men are addressed first. Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Before a single word is said to the women, the responsibility is placed on the one doing the looking. Verse 31 then addresses the women with its own instructions. Both verses use the same phrase for the reason, that it is purer, azka, cleaner and more productive at once, the same root used for growth. Restraint is described as the condition for increase. Verse 32 turns from restriction to provision, which is what makes the section coherent. Marry off the single among you. If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty. A community that legislates the eyes is obligated to open the doors. And verse 33 tells the man who cannot yet marry to hold himself chaste until Allah enriches him, which is a hard instruction stated without apology and without pretending the wait is easy.

Verses 35 to 45

The Niche, the Mirage, and the Deep Sea.

Verse 35 is one of the most concentrated verses in the Book. Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. Then the likeness, built in layers: a niche, a lamp inside it, glass around the lamp, the glass like a brilliant star, the oil from an olive tree that is neither of the east nor of the west, oil so pure it would almost glow untouched by fire. Light upon light. Notice that every element in the image is a protection or a purification. The niche gathers the light and stops it from scattering. The glass shields the flame and multiplies it. The oil is described as pure before the fire ever reaches it. A man who wants that light should read the description as a specification. Verse 36 and verse 37 then take it out of metaphor and put it in a room. In houses which Allah has permitted to be raised, glorified morning and evening, by men whom neither trade nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah, from the prayer, and from the zakat. Not men without trade. Men with trade that does not pull them off. That is the standard for anyone who works. Verses 39 and 40 give the two failure states, and they are different. Verse 39 is the mirage. A man’s deeds look like water from a distance, he walks toward them his whole life, and when he arrives there is nothing there, and he finds Allah with him, settling the account. That is the busy man whose work had no foundation. Verse 40 is the other one: darknesses in a deep sea, a wave over him, another wave over that, clouds over that. When he puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. That is not deception. That is a man with no light at all, layered under three separate coverings. The verse ends with the whole matter in one line. Whoever Allah does not give light has no light. Verse 41 then quietly notes that every creature already knows its own prayer and its own glorification. The birds have it. The verse is placed here to be felt.

Verses 46 to 64

We Hear and We Obey.

Verses 47 through 50 describe men who go to judgment only when they expect to win. When they are called to Allah and His Messenger to judge between them, a party turns away, but if the right is theirs, they come in submission. That is a portrait of selective submission, and verse 50 names the possibilities without softening any: sickness in the heart, doubt, or a fear that the judgment will be unjust. Verse 51 gives the opposite, and it is only four words in Arabic. We hear and we obey. Verse 55 is the promise, and it is worth reading the condition attached rather than only the reward. Allah promises succession in the land, the establishment of the religion, and the exchange of fear for security. Then the condition, stated as a description rather than a demand: they worship Me and associate nothing with Me. Verse 58 and verse 59 return to permission, this time inside a man’s own house, and set three times of privacy that even household members and children must observe. A home is not one undifferentiated space. Verse 61 then does something the modern reader should sit with. After all the legislation of boundaries, it lists every house a man may eat in without asking, his relatives, his friend’s house, houses whose keys he holds, and says there is no blame on you whether you eat together or separately, and then instructs the greeting. The same surah that built the walls opens the doors, so nobody mistakes the boundaries for coldness. It closes in verse 64 with the reason all of it holds. He knows what you are upon.

Structural Summary

Sixty-Four Verses. You Thought It Was a Small Thing.

The surah announces itself as obligation, then legislates the parts of life nobody supervises. It sets the evidentiary bar for accusation so high that the cost of a rumor lands on the one who started it, and it interrogates the ordinary believers who repeated a slander they had no knowledge of. It makes permission a condition of entry and tells a man turned away that going back purifies him. It addresses the men about their eyes before it addresses the women, and then obligates the community to marry off its single people. At its center it describes light housed in a niche, in glass, from oil that would almost glow untouched, and sets beside it the mirage a man walks toward all his life and the layered darkness of one with no light at all. It ends on four words that settle every dispute in advance.
