Wa ma kana limu'minin ay yaqtula mu'minan illa khata'a, waman qatala mu'minan khata'an fatahriru raqabatim mu'minatin wa diyatum musallamatun ila ahlihi illa ay yassaddaqu, fa in kana min qawmin 'aduwwil lakum wa huwa mu'minun fatahriru raqabatim mu'minah, wa in kana min qawmim baynakum wa baynahum misaqun fadiyatum musallamatun ila ahlihi wa tahriru raqabatim mu'minatin famal lam yajid fa Siyamu shahrayni mutatabi'ayni tawbatam minal lah, wa kanal lahu 'Aliman hakima
It is not for a believer to kill a believer, except by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake must free a believing slave and pay compensation to his family, unless they give it as charity. And if he was from a people hostile to you, and he was a believer, then freeing a believing slave. And if he was from a people between you and whom there is a treaty, then compensation paid to his family and freeing a believing slave. And whoever does not find that, then fasting two consecutive months, as a turning from Allah. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Wa may yaqtul mu'minam muta'ammidan fajaza'uhu Jahannamu khalidan fiha wa ghadibal lahu 'alayhi wa la'anahu wa a'adda lahu 'azaban 'azima
And whoever kills a believer deliberately, his payment is Hell, remaining in it, and Allah is angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.

You who believe, when you go out in the way of Allah, verify carefully, and do not say to one who offers you peace, you are not a believer, seeking the goods of the life of this world. With Allah are many gains. You were like that before, and Allah favored you. So verify carefully. Allah is aware of what you do.

Not equal are those believers who sit, other than those with an injury, and those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and their selves. Allah has raised those who strive with their wealth and their selves above those who sit, by a degree. And to each Allah has promised the best. And Allah has favored those who strive above those who sit with a great reward.
Darajatim minhu wa maghfiratan wa rahmah, wa kanal lahu Ghafurar Rahima
Degrees from Him, and forgiveness and mercy. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Innal ladhina tawaffa humul mala'ikatu zalimi anfusihim qalu fima kuntum qalu kunna mustad'afina fil-ard, qalu alam takun ardul lahi wasi'atan fatuhajiru fiha, fa ula'ika ma'wahum Jahannamu wa sa'at masira
Those whom the angels take while they are wronging themselves, they say, what were you in. They say, we were oppressed in the land. They say, was the earth of Allah not wide enough for you to migrate in it. Those, their shelter is Hell, and it is a wretched destination.
Except the oppressed among the men and the women and the children who cannot find a way out and are not guided to a road.
Fa ula'ika 'asal lahu ay ya'fuwa 'anhum, wa kanal lahu 'Afuwwan Ghafura
Those, it may be that Allah will pardon them. And Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.
Wa may yuhajir fi sabilil lahi yajid fil ardi muraghaman kasiran wa sa'ah, wa may yakhruj mim baytihi muhajiran ilal lahi wa Rasulihi summa yudrikhu'l mawtu faqad waqa'a ajruhu 'alal lah, wa kanal lahu Ghafurar Rahima
And whoever migrates in the way of Allah will find on the earth many places of refuge and abundance. And whoever leaves his house, migrating to Allah and His Messenger, and then death overtakes him, his reward has already fallen due upon Allah. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Wa iza darabtum fil ardi falaysa 'alaykum junahun an taqsuru minas Salati in khiftum ay yaftinakumul ladhina kafaru, innal kafirina kanu lakum aduwwam mubina
And when you travel in the land, there is no blame on you for shortening the prayer, if you fear that those who disbelieved may harm you. The disbelievers are a clear enemy to you.
Wa iza kunta fihim fa aqamta lahumus Salata faltaqum ta'ifatum minhum ma'aka walyakhudhu aslihatahum fa iza sajadu fal yakunu min wara'ikum waltati ta'ifatun ukhra lam yusallu falyusallu ma'aka walyakhudhu hizrahum wa aslihatahum, waddal ladhina kafaru law taghfuluna 'anaslihatikum wa amti'atikum fa yamiluna 'alaykum maylatan wahidah, wa la junaha 'alaykum in kana bikum adham mim matarin aw kuntum marda an tada'u aslihatakum wa khudhu hizrakum, innal laha a'adda lilkafirina 'azabam muhina
And when you are among them and you lead them in the prayer, let a group of them stand with you and let them take their weapons. Then when they have prostrated, let them be behind you, and let another group who have not prayed come and pray with you, and let them take their precaution and their weapons. Those who disbelieved wish that you would be heedless of your weapons and your baggage, so they could fall upon you in one attack. And there is no blame on you if you are troubled by rain or are ill, to lay down your weapons. And take your precaution. Allah has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.
Fa iza qadaytumus Salata fadhkurul laha qiyaman wa qu'udan wa 'ala junubikum, fa izatma'nantum fa aqimus Salah, innas Salata kanat 'alal mu'minina kitabam mawquta
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing and sitting and on your sides. Then when you are secure, establish the prayer. The prayer is a timed obligation on the believers.
And do not weaken in pursuing the people. If you are suffering, they are suffering as you suffer. And you hope from Allah what they do not hope. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Inna anzalna ilaykal Kitaba bilhaqqi litahkuma baynan nasi bima arakal lah, wa la takul lilkha'inina khasima
We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, so that you may judge between people by what Allah has shown you. And do not be an advocate for the treacherous.
Wastaghfiril laha innal laha kana Ghafurar Rahima
And ask forgiveness of Allah. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
And do not argue on behalf of those who betray themselves. Allah does not love anyone who is a great betrayer and sinful.
They hide from people and do not hide from Allah, and He is with them while they plan by night words He does not approve. And Allah encompasses what they do.
Ha antum ha'ula'i jadaltum 'anhum fil hayatid dunya famay yujadilul laha 'anhum Yawmal Qiyamati am may yakunu 'alayhim wakila
Here you are, arguing on their behalf in the life of this world. So who will argue with Allah on their behalf on the Day of Standing, or who will be a guardian over them.
Wa may ya'mal su'an aw yazlim nafsahu summa yastaghfiril laha yajidil laha Ghafurar Rahima
And whoever does something bad or wrongs himself, then asks forgiveness of Allah, will find Allah Forgiving, Merciful.
Wa may yaksib isman fa innama yaksibuhu 'ala nafsih, wa kanal lahu 'Aliman hakima
And whoever earns a sin only earns it against himself. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Wa may yaksib khati'atan aw isman summa yarmi bihi bari'an faqadihtamala buhtanan wa ismam mubina
And whoever earns a mistake or a sin and then throws it at an innocent person has carried slander and a clear sin.
And if not for the bounty of Allah upon you and His mercy, a group of them would have set out to lead you astray. And they lead no one astray but themselves, and they do not harm you in anything. And Allah has sent down to you the Book and the wisdom and has taught you what you did not know. And the bounty of Allah upon you is great.
La khayra fi kasirim min najwahum illa man amara bisadaqatin aw ma'rufin aw islahim baynan nas, wa may yaf'al dhalikab tigha'a mardatil lahi fa sawfa nu'tihi ajran 'azima
There is no good in much of their private talk, except one who orders charity or kindness or reconciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking the approval of Allah, We will give him a great reward.
Wa may yushaqiqir Rasula mim ba'di ma tabayyana lahul huda wa tattabi' ghayra sabilil mu'minina nuwallihi ma tawalla wa nuslihi Jahannama wa sa'at masira
And whoever opposes the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to him, and follows other than the way of the believers, We will turn him to what he has turned to and burn him in Hell. And it is a wretched destination.
Innal laha la yaghfiru ay yushraka bihi wayaghfiru ma duna dhalika limay yasha', wa may yushrik billahi faqad dalla dalalam ba'ida
Allah does not forgive that anything be associated with Him, and He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And whoever associates anything with Allah has gone far astray.

They call on nothing besides Him except female objects, and they call on nothing except a rebellious devil.
Allah cursed him. And he said, I will take a fixed share of Your servants.
And I will lead them astray and fill them with false hopes and order them, and they will slit the ears of cattle, and I will order them, and they will alter the creation of Allah. And whoever takes Satan as an ally besides Allah has lost a clear loss.
He promises them and fills them with false hopes. And Satan promises them nothing but delusion.
Those, their shelter is Hell, and they will find no escape from it.

And those who believed and did righteous deeds, We will admit them into gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, remaining in them forever. The promise of Allah in truth. And who is more truthful than Allah in speech.

Wa lillahi ma fis samawati wa ma fil ard, wa kanal lahu bikulli shay'im muhita
And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allah encompasses everything.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
A Soul for a Soul.
Part Three opens on the taking of a life and handles it in two verses that are deliberately unequal in length. The accidental case gets a long verse with four scenarios and a fallback. The deliberate case gets one sentence and no way out stated in it.
Then verse 94, which is the most practically useful verse in the passage for anyone who has ever judged somebody quickly. Do not say to one who offers you peace, you are not a believer, seeking the goods of the life of this world. And then the line that removes any ground to stand on: you were like that before, and Allah favored you. The men being addressed had themselves once been people whose faith nobody could see.
The middle of the passage handles an actual court case in Madinah, in which a man committed a theft and arranged for the blame to fall on someone else, and came close to obtaining a ruling in his favour. The verses correct it in public, and they do not soften the correction because of who was nearly misled.
And it closes on the plainest verse in the Quran about inherited assurance. It is not by your wishes, nor the wishes of the People of the Book. Whoever does something bad will be paid for it.
Verses 92 to 104
Verify Carefully.
Verse 92 handles accidental killing across four situations, and the detail worth noticing is the third one. If the person killed was from a people hostile to you, and he was a believer, then freeing a believing slave. No compensation is paid, because the hostile family would not receive it, but the expiation still stands in full. The life is not discounted because of which side of the line his relatives were on.
And the expiation is called tawbatan minallah, a turning from Allah, rather than a penalty. The act was accidental. The response is still structured as a return.
Verse 94 was revealed after men killed someone who had greeted them with the greeting of peace, on the assumption that he was saying it to save himself. Al-Wahidi records the occasion in Asbab an-Nuzul from Ibn Abbas, and at-Tirmidhi narrates it from Ibn Abbas as well. The verse names the motive underneath: seeking the goods of the life of this world. And then it removes the ground from under them in eight words: you were like that before, and Allah favored you. There was a period when every one of them was a man whose belief was invisible to anyone watching, and someone could have made the same mistake about them.
The command tabayyanu, verify carefully, is repeated twice in the same verse. It is the only instruction in the verse and it is given at both ends of it.
Verse 95 is careful in a way that is easy to miss. Not equal are those who sit and those who strive. Then, in the middle of the clause, before the comparison finishes, the exemption is inserted: other than those with an injury. The man who cannot go is removed from the comparison before it is completed, so that he never has to read the second half wondering where he stands. And the verse still ends with, and to each Allah has promised the best. Even the ranking does not become a condemnation.
Verses 97 to 100 are among the most demanding in the chapter. The angels ask a question with no accusation in it: what were you in. And the answer, we were oppressed in the land, is true. And it is not accepted, because of the next question: was the earth of Allah not wide enough for you to migrate in it. Then verse 98 immediately carves out those who genuinely could not, and verse 99 gives them hope rather than a guarantee, which is the honest shape of the thing.
And verse 100 gives the ruling that has consoled every person who died mid-attempt. Whoever leaves his house migrating to Allah and His Messenger, and then death overtakes him, his reward has already fallen due upon Allah. The reward attaches at the departure, not the arrival. Anyone who set out for something good and did not live to reach it should read that clause slowly.
Verse 102 legislates prayer in the middle of active danger, in enough detail to be executed, and it does not suspend the prayer. It reorganizes it. And verse 103 states the principle underneath: the prayer is kitaban mawquta, a timed prescription. It has hours, and the hours do not move for circumstances.
Verse 104 is one of the most bracing sentences in the chapter. If you are suffering, they are suffering as you suffer. And you hope from Allah what they do not hope. The pain is conceded as identical. The verse does not claim the believers hurt less. The entire difference is located in what each side expects on the far side of the pain.
Verses 105 to 115
An Advocate for the Treacherous.
This passage was revealed about an actual case. A man in Madinah stole armour, hid it in the house of another man, and when the search closed in, his clan came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and pressed the case against the innocent party. At-Tirmidhi narrates the incident from Qatada ibn an-Nu’man, naming Tu’ma ibn Ubayriq of Banu Ubayriq as the thief and Zayd ibn as-Samin as the man the armour was planted on, and al-Wahidi and Ibn Kathir both record it.
What matters for reading is the instruction itself. Verse 105 ends: and do not be an advocate for the treacherous. Verse 107: do not argue on behalf of those who betray themselves. Verse 109: here you are, arguing on their behalf in the life of this world. So who will argue with Allah on their behalf on the Day of Standing.
Anyone who has ever put his weight behind a person because of who that person was to him, rather than because of what he had done, is inside this passage. The question in verse 109 is the one that ends it: your advocacy works here. Who is doing it there.
Verse 108 gives the detail that makes the whole thing visible. They hide from people and do not hide from Allah, and He is with them while they plan by night words He does not approve. The concealment was competent. It was aimed at the wrong audience.
Verse 112 names the specific act. Whoever earns a mistake or a sin and then throws it at an innocent person has carried slander and a clear sin. The verb is to throw. The sin is not transferred by throwing it. It is added to.
And verse 113 states plainly what nearly happened. If not for the bounty of Allah upon you and His mercy, a group of them would have set out to lead you astray. This is preserved in the Quran, permanently, about the Prophet, peace be upon him, and it is followed immediately by, and they lead no one astray but themselves, and they do not harm you in anything.
Verse 114 then gives the one exception to a general judgment about private conversation. There is no good in much of their private talk, except one who orders charity or kindness or reconciliation between people. Three exceptions, and the third is the one people forget: sitting privately with two parties to bring them back together is named as the good kind of secret conversation.
Verses 116 to 126
It Is Not by Your Wishes.
Verses 118 to 120 are the plan, stated by the one carrying it out, in his own words. I will take a fixed share of Your servants. I will lead them astray. I will fill them with false hopes. I will order them and they will slit the ears of cattle. I will order them and they will alter the creation of Allah.
The second item is the one that does the most work and gets the least attention. Umanniyannahum, I will fill them with false hopes. Not I will make them despair. Hope, of the wrong kind, aimed at the wrong outcome, is listed as a primary instrument. And verse 120 repeats it and names what it actually is: he promises them and fills them with false hopes, and Satan promises them nothing but delusion.
Then verse 123, which is the verse that governs the end of this chapter. It is not by your wishes, nor the wishes of the People of the Book. Amaniy is the same root as the false hopes in verse 119, and here it is applied to the religious version of it: the assumption that belonging to the right group settles the matter. The verse addresses both communities in one clause and then states the rule with no group attached to it at all. Whoever does something bad will be paid for it.
Verse 124 then removes every other filter. Whoever does righteous deeds, male or female, and is a believer, those will enter the garden, and they will not be wronged by the speck on a date stone. Two conditions, deeds and belief, and an explicit statement that sex is not a third.
And verse 125 asks the question the chapter has been building toward. Who is better in religion than one who submits his face to Allah while doing good, and follows the way of Ibrahim, inclining to truth. Three elements. Submission, which is the direction. Doing good, which is the conduct. And following the way of Ibrahim, which is the precedent.
And then the last clause, which the whole chapter has been earning. Wattakhadha Allahu Ibrahima khalila. And Allah took Ibrahim as a khalil. The word is not the ordinary word for a friend. Khullah is a friendship that has worked its way into the whole of a person, from a root meaning to penetrate or run through. It is the highest thing said of any human being in the Quran, and the chapter places it at the end of a long passage about how people actually treat each other, as if to say that this is where that road goes.

The Practice · Daily Integration
Verses Ninety-Two to One Hundred and Twenty-Six. Do It Specifically.
One. Verse 94 says you were like that before. Take the person whose faith or sincerity you have privately dismissed. Remember, specifically, the period when yours would have looked the same from outside.
Two. Verse 105 forbids advocating for the treacherous. Identify the person you have defended out of loyalty rather than on the facts. Withdraw the defence, privately and without denouncing them.
Three. Verse 114 names reconciliation between people as good private speech. Pick two people you know who are not speaking. Speak to each of them separately this week with no purpose except bringing them back.
