The Surah · An-Naml

Taa-Sin; tilka Aayaatul Qur-aani wa Kitaabim Mubin

Ta Sin. These are the verses of the Quran and a clear Book,

Hudanw wa bushraa lil mu'minin

a guidance and good news for the believers,

Allazina yuqimunas Salaata wa yu'tunaz Zakaata wa hum bil Aakhirati hum yuqinun

who establish the prayer, give the zakat, and are certain of the hereafter.

Innal lazina laa yu'mimuna bil Aakhirati zaiyannaa lahum a'maalahum fahum ya'mahun

As for those who do not believe in the hereafter, We have made their deeds attractive to them, so they wander blindly.

Ulaaa'ikal lazina lahum su'ul 'azaabi wa hum fil Aakhirati humul akhsarun

Those are the ones who will have the worst punishment, and in the hereafter they are the greatest losers.

Wa innaka latulaqqal Qur-aana mil ladun Hakimin 'Alim

You receive the Quran from One who is Wise, Knowing.

Iz qaala Musaa li ahlihi inni aanastu naaran saaatikum minhaa bikhabarin aw aatikum bishihaabin qabasil la'allakum tastalun

When Musa said to his family, "I have seen a fire. I will bring you news from it, or bring you a burning torch, so that you may warm yourselves."

Falammaa jaaa'ahaa nudiya am burika man finnnnaari wa man hawlahaa wa Subhaanal laahi Rabbil 'aalamin

When he came to it, he was called: "Blessed is the one at the fire and whoever is around it. Glory to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Yaa Musaaa innahu Anal laahul 'Azizul Hakim

Musa, it is I, Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.

Wa alqi 'asaak; falammmaa ra aahaa tahtazzu ka annahaa jaaannunw wallaa mudbiranw wa lam yu'aqqib; yaa Musaa laa takhaf inni laa yakhaafu ladaiyal mursalun

Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving as if it were a serpent, he turned away in retreat and did not look back. "Musa, do not fear. The messengers do not fear in My presence,

Illaa man zalama summa baddala husnam ba'da su'in fa inni Ghafurur Rahim

except one who has wronged, then substituted good after evil. I am Forgiving, Merciful.

Wa adkhil yadaka fi jaibika takhruj baidaaa'a min ghairisu'in fitis'i Aayaatin ilaa Fir'awna wa qawmih; innahum kaanu qawman faasiqin

Put your hand into your garment. It will come out white without harm, among nine signs to Pharaoh and his people. They have been a defiantly disobedient people."

Falammaa jaaa'at hum Aayaatunaa mubsiratan qaalu haazaa sihrum mubin

When Our signs came to them, giving sight, they said, "This is clear magic."

Wa jahadu bihaa wastaiqanat haaa anfusuhum zulmanw-wa 'uluwwaa; fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mufsidin

They rejected them, while their own selves were convinced of them, out of injustice and arrogance. See how the corrupters ended.

Wa laqad aatainaa Daawuda wa sulaimaana 'ilmaa; wa qaalal hamdu lil laahil lazi faddalanaa 'alaa kasirim min 'ibaadihil mu'minin

We gave Dawud and Sulayman knowledge, and they said, "Praise belongs to Allah, who favored us over many of His believing servants."

Wa warisa Sulaimaanu Daawuda wa qaala yaaa aiyuhan naasu 'ullimnaa mantiqat tairi wa utinaa min kulli shai'in inna haazaa lahuwal fadlul mubin

Sulayman inherited from Dawud, and he said, "People, we have been taught the speech of birds, and we have been given of everything. This is the clear bounty."

Wa hushira Sulaimaana junuduhu minal jinni wal insi wattairi fahum yuza'un

His armies of jinn, men and birds were gathered for Sulayman, and they were arranged in ranks.

Hattaaa izaaa ataw 'alaa waadin namli qaalat namlatuny yaaa aiyuhan namlud khulu masaakinakum laa yahtimannakum Sulaimaanu wa junuduhu wa hum laa yash'urun

Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, "Ants, enter your dwellings, so that Sulayman and his armies do not crush you without knowing."

Fatabassama daahikam min qawlihaa wa qaala Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'mata kal lati an'amta 'alaiya wa 'alaa waalidaiya wa an a'mala saalihan tardaahu wa adkhilni birahmatika fi 'ibaadikas saalihin

He smiled, amused at her words, and said, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for the favor You have shown me and my parents, and to do righteous work that pleases You, and admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants."

Wa tafaqqadat taira faqaala maa liya laaa aral hud hud, am kaana minal ghaaa'ibin

He inspected the birds and said, "Why do I not see the hoopoe? Is he among the absent?

La-u'azzibanahu 'azaaban shadidan aw la azbahannahu aw layaatiyanni bisultaanim mubin

I will punish him severely, or slaughter him, unless he brings me a clear reason."

Famakasa ghaira ba'idin faqaala ahattu bimaa lam tuhit bihi wa ji'tuka min Sabaim binaba iny-yaqin

He did not stay long, and said, "I have encompassed what you have not encompassed, and I have come to you from Saba with certain news.

Inni wajattum ra atan tamlikuhum wa utiyat min kulli shai'inw wa lahaa 'arshun 'azim

I found a woman ruling them. She has been given of everything, and she has a great throne.

Wajattuhaa wa qawmahaa yasjuduna lishshamsi min dunil laahi wa zaiyana lahumush Shaitaanu a'maalahum fasaddahum 'anis sabili fahum laa yahtadun

I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah. Satan has made their deeds attractive to them and turned them from the way, so they are not guided,

so that they do not prostrate to Allah, who brings out what is hidden in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you declare.

Allaahu laaa ilaaha illaa Huwa Rabbul 'Arshil Azim

Allah, there is no god but Him, Lord of the great Throne."

Qaala sananzuru asadaqta am kunta minal kaazibin

He said, "We will see whether you told the truth or were among the liars.

It is from Sulayman, and it is: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Qaalat innal muluka izaa dakhalu qaryatan afsaduhaa wa ja'alu a'izzata ahlihaaa azillah; wa kazaalika yaf'alun

She said, "Kings, when they enter a town, ruin it, and make the honorable of its people humiliated. That is what they do.

Wa inni mursilatun ilaihim bihadiyyatin fanaaziratum bima yarji'ul mursalun

I am sending them a gift, and I will see what the messengers bring back."

Falammaa jaaa'a Sulaimaana qaala atumiddoonani bimaalin famaaa aataaniyal laahu khairum mimmaaa aataakum bal antum bihadiyyatikum tafrahoon

When it came to Sulayman, he said, "Are you extending me wealth? What Allah has given me is better than what He has given you. Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift.

Qaala yaaa aiyuhal mala'u aiyukum yaatini bi'arshihaa qabla ai yaatuni muslimin

He said, "Chiefs, which of you will bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"

The one who had knowledge from the Book said, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." When he saw it settled before him, he said, "This is from the bounty of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. Whoever is grateful is grateful for his own sake, and whoever is ungrateful, my Lord is Rich, Generous."

Falammaa jaaa'at qila ahaakaza 'arshuki qaalat kaanna hu; wa utinal 'ilma min qablihaa wa kunnaa muslimin

When she came, it was said, "Is your throne like this?" She said, "It is as though it is the same." And we were given knowledge before her, and we were submitting.

Wa laqad arsalnaaa ilaa Samoda akhaahum Saalihan ani'budul lahha fa izaa hum fariqaani yakhtasimun

We sent to Thamud their brother Salih: worship Allah. Then they became two parties, disputing.

Qaalut taiyarnaa bika wa bimam ma'ak; qaala taaa'irukum 'indal laahi bal antum qawmun tuftanun

They said, "We see you and those with you as a bad omen." He said, "Your omen is with Allah. Rather, you are a people being tested."

Wa kaana fil madinati tis'atu rahtiny yufsiduna fil ardi wa laa yuslihun

In the city were nine men who spread corruption in the land and did not set anything right.

They said, "Swear to one another by Allah that we will attack him and his family by night, then we will tell his heir that we did not witness the destruction of his family, and we are truthful."

Wa makaru makranw wa makarnaa makranw wa hum laa yash'urun

They plotted a plot, and We planned a plan, while they did not perceive.

Fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatu makrihim annaa dammar naahum wa qawmahum ajma'in

See how their plot ended. We destroyed them and their people, all of them.

Fatilka buyutuhum khaa wiyatam bimaa zalamu; inna fi zaalika la Aayatal liqaw miny-ya'lamun

Those are their houses, fallen in, because they did wrong. In that is a sign for a people who know.

Wa anjainal lazina aamanu wa kaanu yattaqun

And We saved those who believed and were mindful of Allah.

Wa lutan iz qaala liqawmihi ataatunal faa hishata wa antum qawmun tajjhalun

And Lut, when he said to his people, "Do you commit indecency while you see clearly?

A'innakum lataatunar rijaala shahwatam min dunin nisaaa'; bal antum qawmun tajhalun

Do you approach men with desire instead of women? You are a people who are ignorant."

Fammaa kaana jawaaba qawmihi illaaa an qaalu akrijun aalaa Lutim min qaryatikum innahum unaasuny yatatahharun

The only answer of his people was that they said, "Expel the family of Lut from your town. They are people who keep themselves pure."

Fa anjainaahu wa ahlahu illam ra atahu qaddarnaahaa minal ghaabirin

So We saved him and his family, except his wife. We decreed her to be among those who stayed behind.

Wa amtarnaa 'alaihimm mataran fasaaa'a matarul munzarin

And We rained upon them a rain. Evil was the rain of those who had been warned.

Qulil hamdu lillaahi wa salaamun 'alaa 'ibaadihil lazinas tafaa; aaallaahu khairun ammmaa yushrikun

Say, "Praise belongs to Allah, and peace upon His servants whom He has chosen." Is Allah better, or what they associate with Him?

Amman khalaqas samaawaati wal arda wa anzala lakum minas samaaa'i maaa'an fa ambatnaa bihi hadaaa'iqa zaata bahjjah; maa kanna lakum an tumbitu shajarahaa; 'a-ilaahum ma'al laah; bal hum qawmuny ya'dilun

Or the One who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down water from the sky for you, and with it We caused gardens of delight to grow. It was not for you to make their trees grow. Is there a god with Allah? No, they are a people who assign equals.

Or the One who made the earth a stable place, and made rivers within it, and made firm mountains for it, and made a barrier between the two bodies of water. Is there a god with Allah? No, most of them do not know.

Or the One who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him, and removes the harm, and makes you successors on the earth. Is there a god with Allah? Little do you remember.

Ammany-yahdikum fi zulumaatil barri wal bahri wa many yursilu riyaaha bushram baina yadai rahmatih; 'a-ilaahum ma'al laah; Ta'aalal laahu 'ammaa yushrikun

Or the One who guides you in the darknesses of the land and the sea, and who sends the winds bearing good news before His mercy. Is there a god with Allah? Allah is far above what they associate.

Ammmany-yabda'ul khalqa summa yu'iduhu wa many-yarzuqukum minas sammaaa'i wal ard; 'a-ilaahum ma'allah; qul haatu burhaanakum in kuntum saadiqin

Or the One who begins creation and then repeats it, and who provides for you from the sky and the earth. Is there a god with Allah? Say, "Bring your proof, if you are truthful."

Qul laa ya'lamu mman fis sammaawaati wal ardil ghaiba illal laah; wa maa yash'uruna aiyaana yub'asun

Say, "No one in the heavens or the earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they do not perceive when they will be raised."

Balid daaraka 'ilmuhum fil Aakhirah; bal hum fi shakkim minhaa bal hum minhaa 'amun

Rather, their knowledge is exhausted concerning the hereafter. Rather, they are in doubt about it. Rather, they are blind to it.

Wa qaalal lazina kafaru 'a-izaa kunnaa turaabanw wa aabaaa'unaaa a'innaa lamukhrajun

Those who disbelieve say, "When we and our fathers have become dust, will we really be brought out?

Laqad wu'idnaa haazaa nahnu wa aabaaa'unaa min qablu in haazaaa illaaa asaatirul awwalin

We were promised this before, we and our fathers. This is nothing but the tales of the ancients."

Qul siru fil ardi fanzuru kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mujremin

Say, "Travel the earth and see how the criminals ended."

Wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wa laa takun fi daiqim mimmaa yamkurun

Do not grieve over them, and do not be in distress from what they plot.

Wa yaquluna mataa haazal wa'du in kuntum saadiqin

They say, "When is this promise, if you are truthful?"

Qul 'asaaa any-yakuna radifa lakum ba'dul lazi tasta'jilun

Say, "Perhaps some of what you seek to hasten is already close behind you."

Wa innna Rabbaka lazu fadlin 'alan naasi wa laakina aksarahum laa yashkurun

Your Lord holds bounty for people, but most of them are not grateful.

Your Lord knows what their chests conceal and what they declare.

Wa maa min ghaaa'ibatin fis samaaa'i wal ardi illaa fi kitaabimm mubin

There is nothing hidden in the heaven and the earth that is not in a clear record.

Inna haazal Qur-aana yaqussu 'alaa Bani israaa'ila aksaral lazi hum fihi yakhtalifun

Wa innahu lahudanw wa rahmatul lilmu'minin

and it is guidance and mercy for the believers.

Inna Rabbaka yaqdi bainahum bihukmih; wa Huwal 'Azizul 'Alim

Your Lord will judge between them by His judgment. He is the Mighty, the Knowing.

Fatawakkal 'alal laahi innaka 'alal haqqil mubin

So rely upon Allah. You are upon the clear truth.

Innaka laa tusmi'ul mawtaa wa laa tusmi'us summad du'aaa izaa wallaw mudbirin

You cannot make the dead hear, and you cannot make the deaf hear the call when they turn away in retreat.

Wa maaa anta bihaadil 'umyi 'an dalaalatihim in tusmi'u illaa mai yu'minu bi aayaatinaa fahum muslimun

You cannot guide the blind out of their error. You can make none hear except those who believe in Our verses, so they submit.

Wa izaa waqa'al qawhu 'alaihim akhrajnaa lahum daabbatam minal ardi tukal limuhum annan naasa kaanu bi aayaatinaa laa yuqinun

When the word falls upon them, We will bring out for them a creature from the earth, speaking to them, because people were not certain of Our verses.

Wa Yawma nahshuru min kulli ummmatin fawjam mim many-yukazzibu bi Aayaatinaa fahum yuza'un

On the Day We gather from every nation a crowd of those who denied Our verses, and they are arranged in ranks,

Hattaaa izaa jaaa'u qaala akazzabtum bi Aayaati wa lam tuhitu bihaa 'ilman ammaazaa kuntum ta'malun

until, when they arrive, He will say, "Did you deny My verses while you had not encompassed them in knowledge? What were you doing?"

Wa waqa'al qawlu 'alaihim bimaa zalamu fahum laa yantiqun

The word will fall upon them for the wrong they did, and they will not speak.

Alam yaraw annaa ja'alnal laila li yaskunu fihi wannahaara mubsiraa; inna fi zaalika la Aayaatil liqaw miny-yu'minun

Have they not seen that We made the night for them to rest in, and the day giving sight? In that are signs for a people who believe.

Wa Yawma yunfakhu fis Suri fafazi'a man fis samaawaati wa man fil ardi illaa man shaaa'al laah; wa kullun atawhu daakhirin

On the Day the horn is blown, whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will be terrified, except those Allah wills. All will come to Him, humbled.

Wa taral jibaala tahsabuhaa jaamidatanw wa hiya tamurru marras sahaab; sun'al laahil lazi atqana kulla shai'; innahu khabirum bimaa taf'alun

You see the mountains and think them fixed, while they pass by like clouds. That is the work of Allah, who perfected everything. He is Aware of what you do.

Man jaaa'a bilhasanati falahu khairum minhaa wa hum min faza'iny Yawma'izin aaminun

Whoever comes with a good deed will have better than it, and they will be secure from the terror of that Day.

Wa man jaaa'a bissai yi'ati fakubbat wujuhuhum fin Naari hal tujzawna illaa maa kuntum ta'malun

Whoever comes with an evil deed, their faces will be cast into the Fire. Are you repaid for anything but what you used to do?

Innamaaa umirtu an a'buda Rabba haazihil baldatil lazi harramahaa wa lahu kullu shai'inw wa umirtu an akuna minal muslimin

I have only been commanded to worship the Lord of this city, who made it sacred, and to whom belongs everything. And I have been commanded to be among those who submit,

Wa an atluwal Qur-aana famanih tadaa fa innnamaa yahtadi linafsihi wa man dalla faqul innamaaa ana minal munzirin

and to recite the Quran. Whoever is guided is guided for his own sake. Whoever goes astray, say, "I am only a warner."

Wa qulil hamdu lillaahi sa yurikum Aayaatihi fata'ri funahaa; wa maa Rabbuka bighaaflin 'ammaa ta'malun

And say, "Praise belongs to Allah. He will show you His signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do."

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

How a Man Handles Being Given Everything.

An-Naml is the surah for a man in a position of capacity. Its center is Sulayman, who held more power than anyone in the record, commanded jinn, men and birds, and is shown in this surah doing four things a powerful man rarely does: he thanks Allah before he describes what he was given, he stops an army for an insect, he holds a subordinate accountable and then accepts the subordinate's correction, and he reads a miracle placed in front of him as a test rather than a trophy. Beside him stands a woman ruling a nation, who consults before she decides, reads the political situation accurately, tests a claim with a gift before committing troops, and ends by submitting. Around the two of them the surah runs its argument, and the argument reaches its sharpest point in verse 62. Or the One who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him.

Verses 1 to 14

The Messengers Do Not Fear.

Verse 10 gives Musa's honest reaction to the staff. He turned away in retreat and did not look back. Then verse 10 continues with the reassurance, and verse 11 attaches a clause worth reading twice. The messengers do not fear in My presence, except one who has wronged, then substituted good after evil. I am Forgiving, Merciful. The exception is not there to condemn. It is there so that a man carrying a past does not disqualify himself from the room. The verse names the correction, badal husnan ba'da su', substituted good after evil, and files it under forgiveness. Verse 14 then describes the opposite man with unusual precision. They rejected them, while their own selves were convinced of them, out of injustice and arrogance. The rejection was public and the conviction was private, and they held both at once. That is not a failure of evidence. Nothing more could have been shown to them.

Verses 15 to 44

The Ant, the Bird, and the Throne.

Verse 15 sets the order that governs the whole section. Dawud and Sulayman are given knowledge, and the first recorded thing they do with it is say alhamdulillah. Gratitude before the inventory. Then verse 16 gives the inventory. Verse 18 stops the surah for an insect. An ant tells her colony to get inside so that Sulayman and his armies do not crush them without knowing. Note the clause she adds. Without knowing, la yash'urun. She does not accuse the king of cruelty. She accounts for the possibility that great power does damage by inattention rather than intention, which is the more common way it happens. Verse 19 is Sulayman's response, and it is the measure of the man. He smiles, and then he asks Allah to enable him to be grateful. Not for more power. For the capacity to handle correctly what he already holds. Verses 20 and 21 show him running an inspection and finding one bird missing, and he does not let it pass. A man who cannot account for one absence in his own house does not actually have command of it. Then verse 22 turns the scene over. The hoopoe returns and says, I have encompassed what you have not encompassed. A subordinate tells the wisest king on earth that he knows something the king does not, and the king's answer in verse 27 is not offense but verification. We will see whether you told the truth. Then the queen. Verse 32 shows how she governs. Advise me in my affair. I do not decide a matter until you are present with me. Verse 33 shows her men offering force and deferring the call to her, and verse 34 shows her declining to be flattered into a war. Kings, when they enter a town, ruin it, and make the honorable of its people humiliated. That is a cold and accurate reading of what conquest does, delivered by someone with the strength to try it. Verse 36 is Sulayman refusing her gift, which is the correct read of a bribe dressed as diplomacy. Verse 40 is the peak of the surah. The throne appears before him in less time than a glance takes to return, and his first sentence is a diagnosis of himself. This is from the bounty of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. He does not read the miracle as confirmation of his standing. He reads it as an examination in progress. Verse 44 closes the account with her line, which is the only correct ending available. My Lord, I have wronged myself, and I submit with Sulayman to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Not to Sulayman. With him.

Verses 45 to 58

The Nine Who Swore an Oath.

Verse 46 gives Salih's question to his people, and it is the question to ask anyone in a hurry for consequences. Why do you hasten the evil before the good? Why do you not seek forgiveness. Verse 47 records their answer, that he and his followers were a bad omen, and his correction, that their omen is with Allah. Men blame the presence of the truthful for the trouble their own conduct produced. Verses 48 and 49 are unusually specific about how corruption organizes. Nine men, in one city, who spread corruption and set nothing right, and who bind themselves with an oath sworn in the name of Allah to commit a night murder and then lie about it under oath as well. Verse 50 answers it in the shortest possible form. They plotted a plot, and We planned a plan, while they did not perceive. The two plans ran at the same time and only one side knew there were two.

Verses 59 to 93

Who Answers the Distressed.

Verses 60 through 64 run five questions in the same shape, each ending with the same challenge: is there a god with Allah? Creation and rain and gardens no man could grow. The earth made stable, rivers, mountains, a barrier between the waters. Guidance in the darkness of land and sea. Beginning and repeating creation, and provision from sky and earth. And in the middle of them, verse 62, which is the one a man reaches for at three in the morning. Or the One who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him, and removes the harm, and makes you successors on the earth. Al-mudtarr. Not the righteous man, not the scholar, not the one with a record of service. The one who has been compressed into a corner with nothing left. That is the condition named as sufficient. And the verse ends with a rebuke that is almost gentle. Little do you remember. Every man who has been answered in a crisis and then forgotten it is addressed in three words. Verse 70 is the instruction for anyone carrying a message into hostile ground. Do not grieve over them, and do not be in distress from what they plot. Verse 79 gives what to do instead. So rely upon Allah. You are upon the clear truth. Verse 88 is the image that should sit with a man who thinks his circumstances are fixed. You see the mountains and think them fixed, while they pass by like clouds. That is the work of Allah, who perfected everything, atqana kulla shay'. Everything solid he can see is in motion, and the motion is precise. Verse 93 closes the surah with the same word it used at verse 15 and verse 59. Praise belongs to Allah. He will show you His signs and you will recognize them. Not signs he has to be argued into. Signs he will recognize when they arrive.

Ninety-Three Verses. Enable Me to Be Grateful.

The surah puts two rulers in front of the reader and watches how they handle capacity. Sulayman gives thanks before he lists what he was given, halts an army for an ant, holds one missing bird to account and then accepts the correction that bird brings back, and reads a miracle as an examination rather than a trophy. The queen consults before deciding, refuses to be flattered into war, tests the claim before committing, and ends by submitting. Between and after them the surah runs five questions that no rival power can answer, names the one who answers the compressed man in his corner, and closes on mountains that look fixed and are moving.

Verse 19. Before asking for anything more this week, ask once for the capacity to handle correctly what is already in your hands.

Verse 40. Take the last good thing that landed in your life and write one sentence about it in Sulayman's frame. This is from the bounty of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful.

Verse 62. Write down one time you were answered when you were out of options. Read it the next time you are near that corner.
