The Surah · Verses 65 to 128
Wallaahu anzala minas samaaa'i maaa'an fa ahyaa bihil arda ba'da mawtihaa; inna fee zaalika la aayatal liqaw miny yasma'oon
And Allah sends down water from the sky and gives life with it to the earth after its death. In that is a sign for a people who listen.
Wa inna lakum fil an'aami la'ibrah; nusqeekum mimmmaa fee butoonihee mim baini farsinw wa damil labanann khaalisan saaa'ighallish shaaribeen
And in the cattle there is a lesson for you. We give you drink from what is in their bellies, from between refuse and blood, pure milk, easy for those who drink.
And from the fruits of the palms and the grapes you take an intoxicant and a good provision. In that is a sign for a people who reason.
And your Lord inspired the bee: take houses in the mountains, and in the trees, and in what they build.
Summma kulee min kullis samaraati faslukee subula Rabbiki zululaa; yakhruju mim butoonihaa sharaabum mukh talifun alwaanuhoo feehi shifaaa'ul linnaas, innna fee zaalika la Aayatal liqawminy yatafakkaroon
Then eat from all the fruits and travel the ways of your Lord, made easy. From their bellies comes a drink of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. In that is a sign for a people who reflect.
Wallaahu khalaqakum suma tatawaffaakum; wa minkum many-yuradu ilaaa arzalil 'umuri likai laa ya'lama ba'da 'ilmin shai'aa; innal laaha 'Aleemun Qadeer
And Allah created you, then takes you. And among you is the one returned to the most feeble age, so that he knows nothing after having known. Allah is Knowing, Powerful.
Wallaahu faddala ba'dakum 'alaa ba'din fir rizq; famal lazeena fuddiloo biraaaddee rizqihim 'alaa maa malakat aimaanuhum fahum feehi sawaaa'; afabini'matil laahi yajhadoon
And Allah has favored some of you over others in provision. Those who were favored will not hand over their provision to those their right hands possess, so that they become equal in it. Do they then deny the favor of Allah?
Wallaahu ja'ala lakum min anfusikum azwaajanw wa ja'ala lakum min azwaajikum baneena wa hafadatanw wa razaqakum minat yaiyibaat; afabil baatili yu'minoona wa bini'matil laahi hum yakkfuroon
And Allah made for you mates from among yourselves, and made for you from your mates children and grandchildren, and provided you with good things. Do they then believe in falsehood and deny the favor of Allah?
Wa ya'budoona min doonil laahi maa laa yamliku lahum rizqam minas samaawaati wal ardi shai'anw wa laa yastatee'oon
And they worship besides Allah what holds no provision for them from the heavens or the earth at all, and they are not able to.
So do not present examples for Allah. Allah knows and you do not know.
Darabal laahu masalan 'abdam mammlookal laa yaqdiru 'alaa shai'inw wa marrazaqnaahu mminnaa rizqan hasanan fahuwa yunfiqu minhu sirranw wa jahra; hal yasta-woon; alhamdu lillaah; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon
Allah presents an example: a slave owned, having no power over anything, and one whom We provided from Ourselves with good provision, and he spends from it secretly and openly. Are they equal? Praise belongs to Allah. But most of them do not know.
Wa darabal laahu masalar rajulaini ahaduhumaaa abkamu laa yaqdiru 'alaa shai'inw wa huwa kallun 'alaa mawlaahu ainamaa yuwajjihhu laa yaati bikhairin hal yastawee huwa wa many-yaamuru bil'adli wa huwa 'alaa Siraatim MMustaqeem
And Allah presents an example of two men. One of them is mute, having no power over anything, and he is a burden upon his master. Wherever he directs him, he brings no good. Is he equal to one who commands justice and is on a straight path?
Wa lillaahi ghaibus samaawaati wal ard; wa maaa amrus Saa'ati illaa kalamhil basari aw huwa aqrab; innal laaha 'alaaa kulli shai'in Qadeer
And to Allah belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. The matter of the Hour is only like the blink of an eye, or nearer. Allah has power over all things.
Wallaahu akhrajakum mim butooni ummahaatikum laa ta'lamoona shai'anw wa ja'ala lakumus sam'a wal absaara wal af'idata la'allakum tashkuroon
And Allah brought you out of the bellies of your mothers knowing nothing, and gave you hearing, sight and hearts, so that you may be grateful.
Alam yaraw ilat tairi musakhkharaatin fee jawwis samaaa'i maa yumsikuhunna illal laah; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawminy yu'minoon
Have they not seen the birds held up in the air of the sky? Nothing holds them but Allah. In that are signs for a people who believe.
Wallaahu ja'ala lakum mim buyootikum sakananw wa ja'ala lakum min juloodil an'aami buyootan tastakhif foonahaa yawma za'nikum wa yawma iqaamatikum wa min aswaafihaa wa awbaarihaa wa ash'aarihaaa asaasanw wa mataa'an ilaa heen
And Allah made for you from your houses a place of rest, and made for you from the hides of the cattle houses you find light on the day you travel and the day you camp, and from their wool, fur and hair, furnishings and enjoyment for a time.
And Allah made for you shade from what He created, and made for you shelters in the mountains, and made for you garments that protect you from the heat, and garments that protect you in your fighting. In this way He completes His favor upon you, so that you may submit.
Fa in tawallaw fa innamaa 'alaikal balaaghul mubeen
And if they turn away, upon you is only clear delivery.
They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it. Most of them are ungrateful.
Wa yawma nab'asu min kulli ummatin shaheedan summa laa yu'zanu lillazeena kafaroo wa laa hum yusta'taboon
And on the Day We raise a witness from every nation, then no permission will be given to those who disbelieved, and they will not be asked to make amends.
Wa izaa ra al lazeena zalamul 'azaaba falaa yukhaf fafu 'anhum wa laa hum yunzaroon
And when those who wronged see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, and they will not be given respite.
Wa izaa ra al lazeena ashrakoo shurakaaa'ahum qaaloo Rabbana haaa'ulaaa'i shurakaaa'unal lazeena kunnaa nad'oo min doonika fa alqaw ilaihimul qawla innakum lakaaziboon
And when those who associated others see their partners, they will say, "Our Lord, these are our partners whom we used to call upon besides You." And they will throw the word back at them: "You are liars."
Wa alqaw ilal laahi yawma'izinis salama wa dalla 'anhum maa kaanoo yaftaroon
And they will offer submission to Allah that Day, and what they used to invent will be lost to them.
Allazeena kafaroo wa saddoo 'an sabeelil laahi zidnaahum 'azaaban fawqal 'azaabi bimaa kaanoo yufsidoon
Those who disbelieved and turned others from the way of Allah, We increased them in punishment above the punishment, for the corruption they were spreading.
Wa yawma nab'asu fee kulli ummmatin shaheedan 'alaihim min anfusihim wa ji'naa bika shaheedan 'alaa haaa'ulaaa'; wa nazzalnaa 'alaikal Kitaaba tibyaanal likulli shai'inw wa hudanw wa rahmatanw wa bushraa lilmuslimeen
And on the Day We raise in every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and We bring you as a witness against these. And We sent down the Book to you as a clarification of all things, and as guidance, mercy and good news for those who submit.
Innal laaha yaamaru bil 'adli wal ihsaani wa eetaaa'i zil qurbaa wa yanhaa 'anil fahshaaa'i wal munkari walbagh-i' ya'izukum la'allakum tazakkkaroon
Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing and oppression. He instructs you, so that you may remember.
Wa awfoo bi Ahdil laahi izaa 'aahattum wa laa tanqudul aimaana ba'da tawkeedihaa wa qad ja'altumul laaha 'alaikum kafeelaa; innal laaha ya'lamu maa taf'aloon
And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have made a covenant, and do not break the oaths after their confirmation, when you have made Allah a surety over you. Allah knows what you do.
Wa laa takoonoo kallatee naqadat ghazlahaa mim ba'di quwwatin ankaasaa; tattakhizoona aimaanakum dakhlalam bainakum an takoona ummatun hiya arbaa min ummah; innnamaa yablookumul laahu bih; wa la yubaiyinanna lakum yawmal Qiyaamati maa kuntum fee takhtalifoon
And do not be like the one who unraveled her yarn after it was strong, into pieces, taking your oaths as a means of deceit between you, because one nation is more numerous than another. Allah only tests you by it, and He will make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection what you used to differ about.
Wa law shaaa'al laahu laja'alakum ummmatanw waahidatanw wa laakiny yudillu many-yashaaa'u wa yahdee many-yashaaa'; wa latus'alunna 'ammaa kuntum ta'maloon
And had Allah willed, He would have made you one nation, but He leaves astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will be asked about what you used to do.
Wa laa tattakhizooo aimaanakum dakhalam bainakum ftazilla qadamum ba'da subootihaa wa tazooqus sooo'a bimmaa sadattum 'an sabeelil laahi wa lakum 'azaabun 'azeem
And do not take your oaths as a means of deceit between you, so that a foot slips after it was firm, and you taste evil for having turned others from the way of Allah, and you have a great punishment.
Wa laa tashtaroo bi 'ahdil laahi samanan qaleelaa; innamaa 'indal laahi huwa khairul lakum in kuntum ta'lamoon
And do not sell the covenant of Allah for a small price. What is with Allah is better for you, if you only knew.
What is with you runs out, and what is with Allah remains. And We will reward those who were patient with their reward for the best of what they used to do.
Man 'amila saaliham min zakarin aw unsaa wa huwa mu'minun falanuhyiyannahoo hayaatan taiiyibatanw wa lanajzi yannnahum ajrahum bi ahsani maa kaanoo ya'maloon
Whoever does righteous work, male or female, while being a believer, We will give him a good life, and We will reward them with their reward for the best of what they used to do.
Fa izaa qara tal Quraana fasta'iz billaahi minashh Shai taanir rajeem
So when you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.
Innahoo laisa lahoo sultaanun 'alal lazeena aamanoo wa 'alaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon
He has no authority over those who believe and rely upon their Lord.
Innnamaa sultaanuhoo 'alal lazeena yatawallawnahoo wallazeena hum bihee mushrikoon
His authority is only over those who take him as an ally, and those who associate others with Allah because of him.
Wa izaa baddalnaaa Aayatam makaana Aayatinw wal laahu a'lamu bimaa yunazzilu qaalooo innamaa anta muftar; bal aksaruhum laa ya'lamoon
And when We replace a verse in place of a verse, and Allah knows best what He sends down, they say, "You are only an inventor." Rather, most of them do not know.

And We know that they say, "It is only a human being teaching him." The tongue of the one they hint at is foreign, and this is a clear Arabic tongue.

Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief, except one who is compelled while his heart is at rest in faith, but whoever opens his chest to disbelief, upon them is anger from Allah, and for them is a great punishment.

Those are the ones upon whose hearts, hearing and sight Allah has set a seal, and those are the heedless.

And Allah presents an example of a town that was secure and at rest, its provision coming to it in abundance from every place. Then it denied the favors of Allah, so Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear, for what they used to do.

And do not say, about what your tongues describe as a lie, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood against Allah. Those who invent falsehood against Allah will not succeed.

Allah is with those who are mindful of Him and those who do good.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What This Part Means
Overview
An Insect That Was Given Instructions.
Verse 68 uses a word that stops anyone paying attention. And your Lord inspired the bee. Awha, the same verb used everywhere else in this Book for revelation sent to prophets, applied here to an insect. What follows is a set of instructions, an act of obedience, and an output. Take houses in the mountains and the trees. Eat from all the fruits. Travel the ways of your Lord, made easy. And out of that obedience comes a drink of varying colors in which there is healing for people. A creature that takes its orders directly and follows them exactly produces medicine as a byproduct. That is the model the surah is named for, and Part Two runs from it into the verse that has closed the Friday sermon for more than a thousand years.
Verses 65 to 89
Instructed, and Made Easy.
Verse 66 describes where milk comes from with a precision nobody in that century had any way to know. From between refuse and blood, pure milk, easy for those who drink. Something clean is drawn out from between two things a man would not touch, and it comes out sa'ighan, easy, going down without effort. Verse 68 and verse 69 then give the bee its instructions, and the phrase in verse 69 is the one to keep. Travel the ways of your Lord, made easy. Subula rabbiki dhululan. The roads are described as made compliant, smoothed for the one traveling them under orders. A creature that stays inside its instructions finds the route unresisting. Verse 78 then turns to the reader with the same structure. He brought you out of the bellies of your mothers knowing nothing, and gave you hearing, sight and hearts. And the purpose clause at the end names what the three instruments are for: so that you may be grateful. Not so that you may succeed or understand. Gratitude is stated as the design function. Verse 79 gives a sign a man sees weekly and never counts. Have they not seen the birds held up in the air of the sky? Nothing holds them but Allah. Verses 80 and 81 then inventory shelter, and the detail is domestic: houses to rest in, tents from hides light enough to move on travel day and camp day, wool and fur and hair for furnishings, shade, shelters in the mountains, garments against the heat, and garments for a man's fighting. Then the summary clause: in this way He completes His favor upon you, so that you may submit. Verse 83 is the sentence that indicts more people than any other in this surah. They recognize the favor of Allah, then they deny it. Ya'rifuna, they know it. The problem is not ignorance. The recognition happens and the acknowledgment does not follow it.
Verses 90 to 111
The One Who Unraveled Her Own Thread.
Verse 90 is the most complete instruction in the Quran in a single sentence, and it moves outward in widening circles. Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing and oppression. Three commands and three prohibitions. Adl, giving each thing its right, which is the floor. Ihsan, doing better than is owed, which is the ceiling. And then the specific one nobody legislates for themselves: giving to relatives, because the people nearest a man are the ones he most reliably neglects. It became the custom of the Friday sermon to close with this verse, a practice traced to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, and it has been recited from pulpits every week since. Verse 91 turns to oaths, and verse 92 gives the image. Do not be like the one who unraveled her yarn after it was strong, into pieces. A woman spins thread all day, gets it strong, and then pulls it apart with her own hands. That is what a man does to his own word when he breaks an oath, and the verse names the usual motive in the same breath: because one nation is more numerous than another. He broke it because the other side got bigger. Verse 94 names the cost of it, and the phrase is exact: so that a foot slips after it was firm. Verse 96 gives the whole comparison in eight words. What is with you runs out, and what is with Allah remains. Verse 97 then makes a promise that is easy to read past. Whoever does righteous work, male or female, while being a believer, We will give him a good life. Hayatan tayyibah, in this world, before any mention of the reward that follows. Verses 99 and 100 place the enemy exactly. He has no authority over those who believe and rely upon their Lord. His authority is only over those who take him as an ally. The access is granted by the man himself.
Verses 112 to 128
The Garment of Hunger, and How to Call.
Verse 112 gives the parable of a town, and the description of its former condition is deliberate. Secure and at rest, its provision coming to it in abundance from every place. Then it denied the favors of Allah, and the consequence is described with an image nobody would invent. So Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear. Libas al-ju' wal-khawf. Hunger and fear as clothing, worn, next to the skin, covering the whole body, and visible on the outside. A society that stops acknowledging what it was given ends up wearing the result. Verse 114 gives the instruction that follows: eat from what Allah has provided you, lawful and good, and be grateful. Verse 116 then forbids something that men do casually and religiously at once. Do not say, about what your tongues describe as a lie, this is lawful and this is unlawful, to invent falsehood against Allah. Declaring things permitted and forbidden without authority is named as inventing against Allah. Verse 120 describes Ibrahim in a way worth sitting with. Ibrahim was a nation, ummah, one man counted as a community, and then verse 121 names the quality: grateful for His favors, in a surah entirely about favors. Verse 125 is the instruction for anyone who carries this to other people, and it has three parts and one register. Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom, and good instruction, and argue with them in the way that is best. Hikmah for the one who can reason, good instruction for the one who needs to be moved, and for the one who wants a fight, the best manner rather than the winning one. Verse 126 then caps retaliation at the size of the injury and immediately says the better option: but if you are patient, that is better for the patient. And verse 127 gives the sentence that removes the last illusion a determined man carries. Be patient, and your patience is only through Allah. Wa ma sabruka illa billah. Even the endurance is not his own supply. The surah then closes on the shortest promise in it. Allah is with those who are mindful of Him and those who do good.
Verses Sixty-Five to One Hundred Twenty-Eight. Justice, Excellence, and Giving to Kin.
An insect is given instructions in the same word used for revelation, obeys them exactly, finds the roads made easy, and produces healing. Milk is drawn clean from between two things no one would touch. The three instruments a man was given are named as being for gratitude, and the charge against him is not ignorance but recognition without acknowledgment. Then the verse that has closed the Friday sermon for a thousand years, followed by a woman pulling apart thread she spent the day making strong. A secure town is made to wear hunger and fear as clothing. And the surah ends by telling the one who carries the message to use wisdom, good instruction and the best manner, to cap any response at the size of the injury, and to remember that even his patience is supplied.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 90. Take the three commands in order this week. One act of justice owed. One act of excellence beyond what is owed. One thing given to a relative you have been neglecting.
Verse 92. Look at any commitment you have quietly loosened because the other side got smaller or the pressure changed. Repair it before it comes apart in your hands.
Verse 125. In your next disagreement, pick the best manner over the winning one, deliberately, and note what it costs you.
