The Surah · Al-Qasas

Taa-Sin-Mim

Ta Sin Mim.

Tilka Aayaatul Kitaabil mubin

These are the verses of the clear Book.

Natlu 'alaika min naba-i Musaa wa Fi'awna bilhaqqi liqawminy yu'miinun

We recite to you from the account of Musa and Pharaoh in truth, for a people who believe.

Inna Fir'awna 'alaa fil ardi wa ja'ala ahlahaa shiya'ai yastad'ifu taa'ifatam minhum yuzabbihu abnaa'ahum wa yastahyi nisaa'ahum; innahu kaana minal mufsidin

Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and divided its people into factions, oppressing a group among them, slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. He was one of the corrupters.

Wa nuridu an namunna 'alal lazinas tud'ifu fil ardi wa naj'alahum a'immatanw wa naj'alahumul waarisin

And We wanted to show favor to those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors,

Wa numakkina lahum fil ardi wa nuriya Fir'awna wa Haamaana wa junudahumaa minhum maa kaanu yahzarun

and to establish them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman and their armies from them the very thing they feared.

Wa awhainaa ilaa ummi Musaa an ardi'ihi faizaa khifti 'alaihi fa alqihi filyammi wa laa takhaafi wa laa tahzani innaa raadduhu ilaiki wa jaa'iluhu minal mursalin

We inspired the mother of Musa: nurse him, and when you fear for him, cast him into the river, and do not fear and do not grieve. We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers.

Faltaqatahu Aalu Fir'awna li yakuna lahum 'aduwwanw wa hazanaa; inna Fir'awna wa Haamaana wa junuda humaa kaanu khaati'in

The family of Pharaoh picked him up, so that he would become to them an enemy and a source of grief. Pharaoh, Haman and their armies were wrongdoers.

Wa qaalatim ra atu Fir'awna qurratu 'aynil li wa lak; laa taqtuluhu 'asaa aiyanfa'anaa aw nattakhizahu waladanw wa hum laa yash'urun

The wife of Pharaoh said, "A comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we will take him as a son," while they did not perceive.

Wa asbaha fu'aadu ummi Musaa faarighan in kaadat latubdi bihi law laa arrabatnaa 'alaa qalbihaa litakuna minal mu'minin

The heart of the mother of Musa became empty. She almost revealed him, had We not bound her heart so that she would be among the believers.

Wa qaalat li ukhtihi qussihi fabasurat bihi 'an junubinw wahum laa yash'urun

She said to his sister, "Follow him." So she watched him from a distance while they did not perceive.

Wa harramnaa 'alaihil maraadi'a min qablu faqaalat hal adullukum 'alaa ahli baitiny yakfulunahu lakum wa hum lahu naasihun

We had forbidden him to accept nurses before, so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household who will raise him for you and be sincere to him?"

So We returned him to his mother, so that her eye would be comforted and she would not grieve, and so that she would know that the promise of Allah is true. But most of them do not know.

Wa lammaa balagha ashuddahu wastawaa aatai naahu hukmanw wa 'ilmaa; wa kazaalika najzil muhsinin

When he reached full strength and maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. That is how We reward those who do good.

Wa dakhalal madinata 'alaa hine ghaflatim min ahlihaa fawajada fiha raju laini yaqtatilaani haazaa min shi'atihi wa haaza min 'aduwwihi fastaghaasahul lazi min shi'atihi 'alal lazi min 'aduwwihi fawakazahu Musaa faqadaa 'alaihi qaala haaza min 'amalish Shaitaani innahu 'aduwwum mmudillum mubin

He entered the city at a time when its people were unaware, and found two men fighting, one from his own faction and one from his enemies. The one from his faction called him for help against the one from his enemies, so Musa struck him and finished him. He said, "This is from the work of Satan. He is a clear misleading enemy."

Qaala Rabbi inni zalamtu nafsi faghfir li faghafaralah; innahu Huwal Ghafurur Rahim

He said, "My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me." So He forgave him. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Qaala Rabbi bimaa an'amta 'alaiya falan akuna zahiral lilmujrimin

He said, "My Lord, for the favor You have shown me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals."

Fa asbaha fil madinati khaa'ifany yataraqqabu fa izal lazis tansarahu bil amsi yastasrikhuh; qaala lahu musaa innaka laghawiyyum mubin

He became fearful in the city, watching. Then the one who had sought his help the day before called out to him again. Musa said to him, "You are clearly a troublemaker."

Falammaa an araada ai yabtisha billazi huwa 'aduwwul lahumaa qaala yaa Musaa aturidu an taqtulani kamaa qatalta nafsam bil amsi in turidu illaa an takuna jabbaaram fil ardi wa maa turidu an takuna minal muslihin

When he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to them both, the man said, "Musa, do you want to kill me as you killed a soul yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not want to be among those who set things right."

Wa jaa'a rajulum min aqsal madinati yas'aa qaala yaa Musaa innal mala a yaa tamiruna bika liyaqtuluka fakhruj inni laka minan naasihin

A man came running from the far side of the city and said, "Musa, the chiefs are conferring about you, to kill you. So leave. I am giving you sincere advice."

Fakharaja minhaa khaa 'ifany-yataraqqab; qaala Rabbi najjini minal qawmiz zaalimin

So he left it, fearful and watching. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."

Wa lammaa tawajjaha tilqaa'a Madyana qaala 'asaa Rabbi ai yahdiyani Sawaa'as Sabil

When he turned toward Madyan, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the even path."

Wa lammaa warada maa'a Madyana wajada 'alaihi ummatam minannaasi yasquna wa wajada min dunihimum ra ataini tazudaani qaala maa khatubkumaa qaalataa laa nasqi hataa yusdirar ri'aa'u wa abunaa shaikhun kabir

When he arrived at the water of Madyan, he found a group of people watering, and he found two women holding back. He said, "What is your situation?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds take away their flocks, and our father is a very old man."

Fasaqaa lahumaa summa tawallaa ilaz zilli faqaala Rabbi inni limaa anzalta ilaiya min khairin faqir

So he watered for them, then turned to the shade and said, "My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me."

Then one of the two came to him, walking with modesty. She said, "My father is calling you, to reward you for having watered for us." When he came to him and told him the account, he said, "Do not fear. You have escaped the wrongdoing people."

Qaalat ihdaahumaa yaa abatis taajirhu inna khaira manistaajartal qawiyyul amin

One of the two said, "My father, hire him. The best one you can hire is the strong and trustworthy."

He said, "I want to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine, on the condition that you work for me eight years. If you complete ten, that is from you. I do not want to make it hard for you. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the righteous."

Qaala zaalika baini wa bainaka aiyamal ajalaini qadaitu falaa 'udwaana 'alaiya wallaahu 'alaa ma naqulu Wakil

He said, "That is between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete, there will be no injustice against me. Allah is Guardian over what we say."

When Musa had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he saw a fire on the side of the mount. He said to his family, "Stay here. I have seen a fire. Perhaps I will bring you news from it, or a burning branch from the fire, so that you may warm yourselves."

Throw down your staff." When he saw it moving as if it were a serpent, he turned away in retreat and did not look back. "Musa, come forward and do not fear. You are among the secure.

Put your hand into your garment. It will come out white without harm. And draw your arm to yourself against fear. These are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. They are a defiantly disobedient people."

And my brother Harun is clearer than me in speech, so send him with me as support, confirming me. I fear they will deny me."

He said, "We will strengthen your arm with your brother, and give you both authority, so they will not reach you. With Our signs, you two and those who follow you will be the victors."

Falammaa jaa'ahum Musaa bi Aayaatinaa baiyinaatin qaalu maa haazaa illaa sihrum muftaranw wa maa sami'naa bihaazaa fi aabaa'inal awwalin

When Musa came to them with Our clear signs, they said, "This is nothing but invented magic. We never heard of this among our first fathers."

Wa qaala Musaa Rabbi a'alamu biman jaa'a bilhudaa min 'indihi wa man takunu lahu 'aaqibatud daari innahu laa yuflihuz zaalimun

Musa said, "My Lord knows best who comes with guidance from Him, and whose will be the final home. The wrongdoers do not succeed."

Pharaoh said, "Chiefs, I do not know of any god for you other than me. Haman, kindle a fire for me over the clay and build me a tower, so that I may look upon the God of Musa. I think he is one of the liars."

Wastakbara huwa wa junuduhu fil ardi bighairil haqqi wa zannu annahum ilainaa laa yurja'un

He and his armies were arrogant in the land without right, and thought they would not be returned to Us.

Fa akhaznaahu wa junu dahu fanabaznaahum fil yammi fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatuz zaalimin

So We seized him and his armies and cast them into the sea. See how the wrongdoers ended.

Wa ja'alnaahum a'immatany yad'una ilan Naari wa Yawmal Qiyaamati laa yunsarun

We made them leaders calling to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.

We made a curse follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.

We gave Musa the Book after We had destroyed the earlier generations, as clear insight for people, and as guidance and mercy, so that they might remember.

Wa maa kunta bijaanibil gharbiyyi iz qadainaa ilaa Musal amra wa maa kunta minash shaahidin

You were not on the western side when We decreed the command to Musa, and you were not among the witnesses.

Wa laakinnaa anshaanaa qurunan fatataawala 'alaihimul 'umur; wa maa kunta saawiyan fi ahli Madyana tatlu 'alaihim Aayaatinaa wa laakinnaa kunnaa mursilin

But We produced generations, and long ages passed over them. You were not dwelling among the people of Madyan, reciting Our verses to them, but We were sending messengers.

Wa maa kunta bijaanibit Turi iz naadainaa wa laakir rahmatam mir Rabbika litunzira qawmam maa ataahum min nazirim min qablika la'allahum yatazakkarun

And you were not at the side of the mount when We called, but as a mercy from your Lord, so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you, so that they may remember.

Wa law laa an tusibahum musibatum bimaa qaddamat aidihim fa yaqulu Rabbanaa law laa arsalta ilainaa Rasulan fanattabi'a Aayaatika wa nakuna minal mu'minin

And so that, if a disaster struck them for what their own hands sent forth, they would not say, "Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger, we would have followed Your verses and been among the believers."

Falammaa jaa'ahumul haqqu min 'indinaa qaalu law laa utiya misla maa utiyaa Musaa; awalam yakfuru bimaa utiya Musaa min qablu qaalu sihraani tazaaharaa wa qaalu innaa bikullin kaafirun

When the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given the like of what Musa was given?" Did they not reject what Musa was given before? They said, "Two works of magic supporting each other," and they said, "We reject all of it."

Qul faatu bi Kitaabim min 'indil laahi huwa ahdaa minhu maa attabi'hu in kuntum saadiqin

Say, "Then bring a book from Allah that gives better guidance than these two, and I will follow it, if you are truthful."

Fa il lam yastajibu laka fa'lam annamaa yattabi'una ahwaa'ahum; w aman adallu mimmanit taba'a hawaahu bighari hudam minal laah; innal laaha laa yahdil qawmaz zaalimin

If they do not answer you, know that they are only following their desires. Who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

We have delivered the word to them in sequence, so that they may remember.

Allazina aatainaahu mul Kitaaba min qablihi hum bihi yu'minun

Those to whom We gave the Book before it believe in it.

Wa izaa yutlaa 'alaihim qaalu aamannaa bihi innahul haqqu mir rabbinaa innaa kunnaa min qablihi muslimin

When it is recited to them, they say, "We believe in it. It is the truth from our Lord. We were submitting even before it."

Ulaa'ika yu'tawna ajrahum marratayni bimaa sabaru wa yadra'una bil hasanatis saiyi'ata wa mimmaa razaq naahum yunfiqun

Those will be given their reward twice for their patience. They repel evil with good, and they spend from what We provided them.

Wa izaa sami'ul laghwa a'radu 'anhu wa qaalu lanaa a'maalunaa wa lakum a'maalukum salaamun 'alaikum laa nabtaghil jaahilin

When they hear idle talk, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds and for you are your deeds. Peace be upon you. We do not seek the ignorant."

Innaka laa tahdi man ahbata wa laakinna laaha yahdi mai yashaa'; wa Huwaa'lamu bilmuhtadin

You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills. He knows best those who are guided.

Wa qaalu in nattabi'il hudaa ma'aka nutakhattaf min ardinaa; awalam numakkil lahum haraman aaminany yujbaa ilaihi samaraatu kulli shai'ir rizqam mil ladunnaa wa laakinna aksarahum laa ya'lamun

They said, "If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched from our land." Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary, to which the fruits of all things are brought as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.

Wa kam ahlaknaa min qaryatim batirat ma'ishatahaa fatilka masaainuhum lam tuskam mim ba'dihim illaa qalilaa; wa kunnaa Nahnul waarisin

How many towns We destroyed that were ungrateful for their way of living. Those are their dwellings, not lived in after them except a little. We were the inheritors.

Wa maa kaana Rabbuka muhlikal quraa hattaa yab'asa fi ummihaa Rasulany yatlu 'alaihim aayaatina; wa maa kunnaa muhlikil quraa illaa wa ahluhaa zaalimun

Your Lord would not destroy the towns until He sent to their central city a messenger reciting Our verses to them. We do not destroy towns unless their people are wrongdoers.

Wa maa utitum min shai'in famataa'ul hayaatid dunyaa wa zinatuhaa; wa maa 'indal laahi khairunw wa abqaa; afalaa ta'qilun

Whatever you have been given is the enjoyment of the life of this world and its adornment. What is with Allah is better and more lasting. Will you not reason?

Afamanw wa'adnaahu wa'dan hasanan fahuwa laaqihi kamam matta'naahu mataa'al hayaatid dunyaa summa huwa Yawmal Qiyaamati minal muhdarin

Is one to whom We made a good promise, which he will meet, like one to whom We gave the enjoyment of the life of this world and who on the Day of Resurrection is among those brought forward?

Wa Yawma yunaadihim fa-yaqulu aina shurakaa 'iyal lazina kuntum taz'umun

On the Day He calls to them and says, "Where are My partners whom you used to claim?"

Qaalal lazina haqqa 'alaihimul qawlu Rabbanaa haa'ulaa'il lazina aghwainaa aghwainaahu kamaa ghawainaa tabarraanaa ilaika maa kaanu iyyaanaa ya'budun

Those upon whom the word has come true will say, "Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray. We led them astray as we ourselves went astray. We declare our innocence before You. It was not us they were worshipping."

Wa qilad 'u shurakaa'akum fada'awhum falam yastajibu lahum wa ra awul 'azaab; law annahum kaanu yahtadun

It will be said, "Call your partners." So they will call them, and they will not answer, and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided.

Wa Yawma yunaadihim fa yaqulu maazaa ajabtumul mursalin

On the Day He calls to them and says, "What did you answer the messengers?"

Fa'amiyat 'alaihimul ambaa'u Yawma'izin fahum laa yatasaa'alun

The accounts will be obscured to them on that Day, and they will not question one another.

Fa ammaa man taaba wa aamana wa 'amila saalihan fa'asaa ai yakuna minal muflihin

As for the one who repented, believed and did righteous work, perhaps he will be among the successful.

Wa Rabbuka yakhuluqu maa yashaa'u wa yakhtaar; maa kaana lahumul khiyarah; Subhannal laahi wa Ta'aalaa 'ammaa yushrikun

Your Lord creates what He wills and chooses. They have no choice. Glory to Allah, above what they associate.

Your Lord knows what their chests conceal and what they declare.

Wa Huwal laahu laa ilaaha illaa Huwa lahul hamdu fil ulaa wal Aakhirati wa lahul hukmu wa ilaihi turja'un

He is Allah. There is no god but Him. To Him belongs praise in the first and in the last, and to Him belongs the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.

Qul ara'aitum in ja'alal laahu 'alaikumul laila sarmadan ilaa Yawmil Qiyaamati man ilaahun ghairul laahi yaa tikum bidiyaa'in afalaa tasma'un

Say, "Have you considered, if Allah made the night continuous over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you light? Will you not listen?"

Qul ara'aitum in ja'alal laahu 'alaikumun nahaara sarmadan ilaa Yawmil Qiyaamati man ilaahun ghairul laahi yaatikum bilailin taskununa fihi afalaa tubsirun

Say, "Have you considered, if Allah made the day continuous over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you a night to rest in? Will you not see?"

From His mercy He made for you the night and the day, so that you may rest in it and seek of His bounty, and so that you may be grateful.

Wa Yawma yunaadihim fa yaqulu aina shurakaa'iyal lazina kuntum tazz'umun

On the Day He calls to them and says, "Where are My partners whom you used to claim?"

Wa naza'naa min kulli ummatin shahidan faqulnaa haatu burhaanakum fa'alimu annal haqqa lillaahi wa dalla 'anhum maa kaanu yaftarun

We will draw out from every nation a witness and say, "Bring your proof." Then they will know that the truth belongs to Allah, and what they used to invent will be lost to them.

Inna Qaaruna kaana min qawmi Musaa fabaghaa 'alaihim wa aatainaahu minal kunuzi maa inna mafaati hahu latanu'u bil'usbati ulil quwwati iz qaala lahu qawmuhu laa tafrah innal laahaa laa yuhibbul farihin

Qarun was from the people of Musa, and he oppressed them. We had given him treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men. His people said to him, "Do not exult. Allah does not love those who exult.

Wabtaghi fimaa aataakal laahud Daaral Aakhirata wa laa tansa nasibaka minad dunyaa wa ahsin kamaa ahsanal laahu ilaika wa laa tabghil fasaada fil ardi innal laaha laa yuhibbul mufsidin

Seek, with what Allah has given you, the home of the hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world. Do good as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land. Allah does not love the corrupters."

Qaala innamaa uti tuhu 'alaa 'ilmin 'indi; awalam ya'lam annal laaha qad ahlaka min qablihi minal quruni man huwa ashaddu minhu quwwatanw wa aksaru jam'aa; wa laa yus'alu 'an zunubihimul mujrimun

He said, "I was given it only because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allah had destroyed before him generations greater than him in strength and greater in accumulation? The criminals are not questioned about their sins.

Fakharaja 'alaa qawmihi fi zinatih; qaalal lazina yuridunal hayaatad dunyaa yaalaita lanaa misla maa utiya Qaarunu innahu lazu hazzin 'azim

He went out before his people in his adornment. Those who wanted the life of this world said, "If only we had the like of what Qarun was given. He is a man of great fortune."

Wa qaalal lazina utul 'ilma wailakum sawaabul laahi khairul liman aamana wa 'amila saalihaa; wa laa yulaq qaahaa illas saabirun

But those given knowledge said, "Woe to you. The reward of Allah is better for one who believes and does righteous work, and none receive it except the patient."

Fakhasafnaa bihi wa bidaarihil arda famaa kaana laho min fi'atiny yansuru nahu min dunil laahi wa maa kaana minal muntasirin

So We caused the earth to swallow him and his house. He had no party to help him besides Allah, and he was not among those who could help themselves.

Wa asbahal lazina tamannaw makaanahu bil amsi yaquluna waika annal laaha yabsutur rizqa limany ya shaa'u min 'ibaadihi wa yaqdiru law laa am mannal laahu 'alainaa lakhasafa binaa waika annahu laa yuflihul kaafirun

Those who had wished for his place the day before began to say, "It is Allah who extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts it. If Allah had not favored us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us. The disbelievers do not succeed."

Tilkad Daarul Aakhiratu naj'aluhaa lillazina laa yuriduna 'uluwwan fil ardi wa laa fasaadaa; wal 'aaqibatu lilmuttaqin

That home of the hereafter, We assign it to those who want no exaltation in the land, and no corruption. The good outcome belongs to those mindful of Allah.

Man jaa'a bilhasanati falahu khairum minhaa wa man jaa'a bissaiyi'ati falaa yujzal lazina 'amilus saiyiaati illaa maa kaanu ya'malun

Whoever comes with a good deed will have better than it. Whoever comes with an evil deed, those who did evil deeds will be repaid only for what they used to do.

Innal azi farada 'alaikal Qur-aana laraadduka ilaa ma'aad; qur Rabbi a'lamu man jjaa'a bil hudaa wa man huwa fi dalaalim mubin

The One who made the Quran binding upon you will return you to a place of return. Say, "My Lord knows best who has come with guidance and who is in clear error."

Wa maa kunta tarju ai yulqaa ilaikal Kitaabu illaa rahmatam mir Rabbika falaa takunanna zahiral lilkaafirin

You were not expecting that the Book would be delivered to you, but it is a mercy from your Lord. So never be a supporter of the disbelievers.

And do not let them turn you from the verses of Allah after they have been revealed to you. Call to your Lord, and never be among those who associate others with Him.

Wa laa tad'u ma'al laahi ilaahan aakhar; laa ilaaha illaa Hu; kullu shai'in haalikun illaa Wajhah; lahul hukkmu wa ilaihi turja'un

And do not call upon another god with Allah. There is no god but Him. Everything perishes except His Face. To Him belongs the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

One Life, Told From the Inside.

Al-Qasas gives more of a single life than almost any other surah. It follows Musa from a basket in a river to a mountain in the dark, and it does not clean him up on the way. He kills a man. He runs. He arrives somewhere with nothing and asks for help in a sentence any man in trouble can use. Around that life the surah sets two figures who show what happens at the ends of the scale: Pharaoh, who claimed the top, and Qarun, who claimed the credit. The surah's argument is stated at the start, in verses 5 and 6. Allah intended to raise the people Pharaoh was crushing, and to show him from them the very thing he feared. The child Pharaoh was killing infants to prevent was raised in Pharaoh's own house, on Pharaoh's own money. Every measure he took was part of the delivery.

Verses 1 to 14

The Plan Inside the Plan.

Verse 4 describes a functioning system of control. He divided its people into factions and oppressed a group among them. Division first, then oppression, because a people who are already split will not resist together. Verses 5 and 6 then state the counter-intention in the same breath, and it is worth reading slowly. We wanted to show favor to those who were oppressed, and to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors, and to show Pharaoh and his armies the very thing they feared. Nothing about the situation looked like that from inside it. Verse 7 is the instruction given to a woman with an infant she cannot keep. Cast him into the river, and do not fear and do not grieve. The command is to release the thing she was protecting, into the exact place that should have destroyed it, on the strength of a promise with no visible support. Verse 10 records what that cost her. Her heart became empty. She almost revealed him, had We not bound her heart. The verse does not pretend she was serene. She was one decision away from ruining the whole thing, and she was held. Verse 13 gives the return. So We returned him to his mother, so that her eye would be comforted and she would not grieve, and so that she would know that the promise of Allah is true. She got him back, paid to nurse her own son, inside the palace of the man hunting him. The point of the whole sequence is stated as her learning that the promise is true.

Verses 15 to 28

The Killing, the Flight, and the Well.

Verse 15 does not soften anything. Musa struck a man and finished him, and he names it immediately: this is from the work of Satan. Verse 16 is the response of a man who is not going to manage his conscience. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me. No explanation, no context about the provocation. Then verse 17 turns the forgiveness into a commitment. My Lord, for the favor You have shown me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals. That is what repentance looks like when it is real. It converts into a policy. Verse 18 and verse 19 then show him nearly repeating the same mistake the very next day, and being stopped by words from the man he was defending. Verse 20 introduces one of the most quietly important figures in the Quran, a man from the far side of the city who ran to warn him. He is not named, he appears for one verse, and the entire mission survives because of him. Verse 24 is the sentence for any man who has lost everything and is starting over. He waters the flocks of two strangers, asks nothing, goes to the shade, and says, My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me. He does not specify. He states his condition and leaves the content to Allah. Within four verses he has work, a household and a decade of stability. Verse 26 gives the two qualifications that decide who is worth hiring, spoken by a young woman who had watched him for ten minutes. The best one you can hire is the strong and trustworthy. Al-qawiyy al-amin. Capacity and integrity. One without the other fails in a different direction each time, and she names both. Verse 27 and verse 28 then show the contract being made plainly, with terms, an option, and no pressure. I do not want to make it hard for you. Even the arrangement that carries a prophet is conducted like decent business.

Verses 29 to 75

The Mount, and the Man Who Built a Tower.

Verse 29 is the turn. He has completed the term, he is traveling with his family, and he sees a fire, and what he wants from it is warmth and directions. He went looking for a practical thing and was called by name. Verse 33 and verse 34 record what he said back. I killed a soul among them, and I fear they will kill me. And my brother Harun is clearer than me in speech. He does not perform confidence. He names the record and the limitation, and verse 35 answers both without correcting him. We will strengthen your arm with your brother. Verse 38 is Pharaoh at full extension, and it is worth noticing how stupid it is. He tells Haman to fire clay into brick and build him a tower so he can look at the God of Musa. A man with absolute power responds to a metaphysical claim with a construction project. That is what happens when every problem a man has ever had was solved by resources. Verse 56 then delivers the sentence that governs every believer's disappointment about someone he loves. You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills. Muslim records that this verse came down concerning the Prophet's uncle, peace be upon him. Verse 57 catches the excuse of men who know the truth and fear the cost. If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched from our land. The answer given is that their security was never theirs to begin with. Verse 60 sets the whole scale. Whatever you have been given is the enjoyment of the life of this world and its adornment. What is with Allah is better and more lasting.

Verses 76 to 88

Qarun, and the Sentence He Got Wrong.

Verse 76 introduces a man from Musa's own people, meaning from the community that had just been delivered, holding treasure whose keys alone would burden a band of strong men. Verse 77 is the counsel his own people gave him, and it is the most balanced instruction on wealth in the Quran. Seek, with what Allah has given you, the home of the hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world. Do good as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land. Four clauses. Aim at the hereafter with the money. Do not abandon your share here. Match His generosity with your own. Do not use the position to break things. Verse 78 is his answer, and it is one sentence. I was given it only because of knowledge I have. Innama ootituhu ala ilmin indi. That is the whole disease. Not denying Allah, and not refusing charity. Claiming the credit. He attributed the outcome to his own competence, which is the most natural error available to a capable man, and the surah treats it as fatal. Verse 79 shows him going out in his adornment, and verse 79 also records the crowd wishing they were him. Verse 80 puts the other voice in the same street. Those given knowledge said, the reward of Allah is better, and none receive it except the patient. Two audiences watching the same parade and reading it in opposite directions. Verse 81 ends it in one line, and note what is absent. No army, no trial, no warning. The earth swallowed him and his house. Verse 82 gives the crowd's correction the following morning, which is the correction most men only reach after watching someone else fall. Verse 83 then states who the home is actually assigned to, and the criterion is negative rather than positive. Those who want no exaltation in the land and no corruption. Not those who achieved the most. Those who were not seeking to rise over others. The surah closes in verse 88 on the sentence that measures everything in it. Everything perishes except His Face. Pharaoh's kingdom, Qarun's keys, and the basket in the river are all sorted by that one line.

Structural Summary

Eighty-Eight Verses. The Best One You Can Hire Is the Strong and Trustworthy.

The surah tells one life without editing it: a killing, a flight, a decade of labor for another man, and a mountain in the dark. It shows Pharaoh's every precaution serving the delivery of the child he was hunting, and a mother told to release what she was protecting. It gives the prayer of a man with nothing and the two qualifications that decide who is worth hiring. Then it sets Qarun beside all of it, a man who took the counsel of his people and answered it with one sentence claiming the credit, and it closes by measuring every kingdom and every fortune against the only thing that does not perish.
