The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Al-Ma'arij is forty-four verses, chapter 70, Makki. It opens with a man demanding that the punishment he was warned about arrive now, and the surah answers the demand by describing what he is asking for in detail. Between the demand and the description sits the sharpest diagnosis of human nature in the Quran, and then the only exception to it.
The diagnosis is one word. Halu'. The Quran defines it in the next two verses rather than leaving it to the dictionary, and the definition is behavioral: panic when hardship arrives, withholding when good arrives. The same man, two conditions, one flaw. Everything after that verse is the description of the men who are the exception, and the description begins and ends with prayer.
He asked for the punishment to come now. The surah tells him what he asked for, then tells him what is wrong with him for asking.
Verses 1–7 · The Demand and the Distance
A questioner asked about a punishment about to fall, from Allah, Lord of the ascending ways.
Sa'ala sa'ilun bi'adhabin waqi': the request is for the threatened punishment to be produced on demand, which is the standard move of a man who has decided the warning is theater.
Dhi al-ma'arij: the Lord of the ascending ways. The word is the plural of a place or means of ascent, and it is the surah's title. The answer to a demand for immediate delivery is a description of the distance the thing has to travel.
Fi yawmin kana miqdaruhu khamsina alfa sanah: a day whose measure is fifty thousand years. Whatever else this verse establishes, it establishes that the schedule you are pressing against is not measured in your units.
Fasbir sabran jamila: so be patient with a beautiful patience. Ibn Kathir glosses jamil here as patience without complaint to the creation. Not silence, and not suppression. The complaint goes upward rather than sideways.
Innahum yarawnahu ba'idan wa narahu qariba: they see it as far off and We see it as near. The disagreement is not about whether it happens. It is about the distance, and only one party has the measurement.
He wanted it now. He was told the measure of the day, and told the distance he perceives is his own error.
Verses 8–18 · What He Asked For
The day the sky is like molten metal and the mountains are like tufts of wool, and no close friend asks a close friend.
Kal-muhl: the sky like molten dregs of oil or molten metal. Kal-'ihn: mountains like carded wool. Two things that read as permanent, rendered liquid and weightless in one line.
Wa la yas'alu hamimun hamima: no close friend asks about a close friend. They are made to see one another, which is the cruelty in the verse. The proximity remains and the obligation between them does not.
Yawaddu al-mujrimu law yaftadi min 'adhabi yawmi'idhin bibanih, wa sahibatihi wa akhih, wa fasilatihi allati tu'wih, wa man fi al-ardi jami'an thumma yunjih: he would ransom himself with his sons, then his wife, then his brother, then the family that sheltered him, then everyone on earth, if it would save him. The list is ordered outward from what a man protects most. Every relationship a man builds his life around is offered up in sequence.
Kalla innaha laza, nazza'atan lish-shawa: no. It is Laza, stripping away the scalp. The refusal is issued before the sentence.
Tad'u man adbara wa tawalla, wa jama'a fa-aw'a: it calls the one who turned his back and turned away, and who gathered and then hoarded. Two acts of turning and two acts with property. Gathering is not the charge. Gathering and then sealing it up is.
He would trade his sons, then his wife, then everyone alive. What is called for is the man who gathered and then sealed it.
Verses 19–21 · Halu'
The human being was created anxious and grasping. When evil touches him, panicking. When good touches him, withholding.
Inna al-insana khuliqa halu'a: created halu'. The Quran does not leave the word to be argued over. It defines it in the next two verses, and the definition is entirely behavioral.
Idha massahu ash-sharru jazu'a: when evil touches him, he panics. Not when evil strikes him. When it touches him. The threshold is contact.
Wa idha massahu al-khayru manu'a: when good touches him, he withholds. The same threshold, the opposite response. Contact with increase closes the hand.
Read the two together and the flaw is one flaw, not two. The man is governed by whatever just touched him. His conduct is a readout of his conditions.
Panic on the way down, closed fist on the way up. That is the default setting, and the surah calls it the design.
Verses 22–35 · The Exception
Except those who pray, who are constant in their prayer.
Illa al-musallin: the exception is opened with prayer and, twelve verses later, closed with prayer. Everything between the two mentions sits inside that frame.
Alladhina hum 'ala salatihim da'imun: constant in it. Continuity is the quality named, not intensity.
Wa alladhina fi amwalihim haqqun ma'lum, lil-sa'ili wal-mahrum: in their wealth is a known right, for the one who asks and for the one who is deprived. Haqqun ma'lum, a known right. Not a gift, not generosity, not an overflow. A right, owned by someone else, sitting in your account. And two claimants: the one who asks, and the one who does not ask and is deprived anyway. The second is harder, because he has to be found.
The list continues: they affirm the Day of Judgment, they fear their Lord's punishment while knowing no one is secure from it, they guard their chastity, they keep their trusts and their covenants, and they stand up with their testimony.
Wa alladhina hum 'ala salatihim yuhafizun: and they guard their prayer. The frame closes where it opened.
Ten traits, bracketed by prayer at both ends, with a known right in the wealth sitting in the middle.
Verses 36–44 · Leave Them
What is with those who deny, rushing toward you, on the right and on the left in groups?
Muhti'in, rushing forward with their necks outstretched, crowding around him in factions. The image is of an audience gathering to be entertained by the man they refuse to believe.
Ayatma'u kullu imri'in minhum an yudkhala jannata na'im: does every one of them expect to be admitted into a garden of bliss. The assumption is named and refused. Kalla. Then the reminder of what they were created from.
Fala uqsimu bi-Rabbi al-mashariqi wal-magharib inna laqadirun 'ala an nubaddila khayran minhum: an oath by the Lord of the easts and the wests, that We are able to replace them with better than them. Replacement is stated as a live option. No one is load bearing.
Fadharhum yakhudu wa yal'abu hatta yulaqu yawmahum: leave them to their idle talk and their play until they meet their Day. The instruction to the man carrying the message is to stop negotiating with the audience.
They rush in to watch. He is told to leave them to the game until the Day they are already late for.

Why This Surah Is For You
Verse 19 is the most useful diagnosis in the Quran for a man who tracks his own performance. Halu' is not weakness and it is not greed. It is being governed by the last thing that touched you. Read verses 20 and 21 as a two column audit of your last hard month and your last good one, and notice they describe the same man.
Verses 24 and 25 are the correction to how most successful men think about giving. Haqqun ma'lum. A known right, held by someone else, already inside your wealth. Not charity, not surplus, not what is left after the quarter closes. The pair also names two claimants, the one who asks and the one who is deprived without asking, and the second one will never appear in your inbox.
Verse 18, gathered and then sealed it up, is the exact failure mode of the accumulating years. The gathering is not the sin. The sealing is. Money that moves is not what this verse is describing.
Verses 22 and 34 bracket the entire portrait of the exception with prayer, constant at the front and guarded at the back. Every other trait in the list, the wealth, the chastity, the trusts, the testimony, is held inside that frame. When the frame goes, the list goes with it.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Forty-Four Verses. Set the Known Right.
Fix a number. Verse 24 calls it a known right, and a right that is not quantified is not known. Decide the percentage, name the account, and let it leave before you touch the rest.
Find the mahrum, the deprived one who does not ask. He will not appear in your inbox and he will not pitch you. He has to be looked for.
Run the halu' audit monthly. What did hardship do to me, and what did increase do to my hand. Same man, both columns.
When you are being watched by people who have already decided, recite verses 36 to 42 and stop negotiating with the audience.
He was created to panic and to withhold. The exception starts with a prayer he keeps and a right he already owes.
