The Surah · Al-Jumu'ah
Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth glorifies Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Huwa alladhi ba'atha fi al-ummiyyina rasulan minhum yatlu 'alayhim ayatihi wa yuzakkihim wa yu'allimuhumu al-Kitaba wal-Hikmata wa in kanu min qablu lafi dalalin mubin
He is the One who sent among the unlettered a messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and the wisdom, though before that they were in clear error.
Wa akharina minhum lamma yalhaqu bihim, wa huwa al-'Azizu al-Hakim
And others among them who have not yet joined them. He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Dhalika fadlu Allahi yu'tihi man yasha', wallahu dhu al-fadli al-'azim
That is the favor of Allah. He gives it to whom He wills, and Allah is the owner of great favor.
Mathalu alladhina hummilu at-Tawrata thumma lam yahmiluha kamathali al-himari yahmilu asfara, bi'sa mathalu al-qawmi alladhina kadhdhabu bi-ayati Allah, wallahu la yahdi al-qawma az-zalimin
The likeness of those who were charged with the Torah and then did not carry it is the likeness of a donkey carrying volumes. Evil is the example of the people who denied the signs of Allah. Allah does not guide a wrongdoing people.
Qul ya ayyuha alladhina hadu in za'amtum annakum awliya'u lillahi min duni an-nasi fatamannawu al-mawta in kuntum sadiqin
Say: you who are Jews, if you claim that you alone are the allies of Allah apart from the rest of mankind, then wish for death, if you are truthful.
And they will never wish for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead. Allah knows the wrongdoers.
Qul inna al-mawta alladhi tafirruna minhu fa-innahu mulaqikum, thumma turadduna ila 'Alimi al-ghaybi wash-shahadati fayunabbi'ukum bima kuntum ta'malun
Say: the death you flee from will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
Ya ayyuha alladhina amanu idha nudiya lis-salati min yawmi al-jumu'ati fas'aw ila dhikri Allahi wa dharu al-bay', dhalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum ta'lamun
You who believe, when the call is made for prayer on the day of congregation, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave the trade. That is better for you, if you knew.
Fa-idha qudiyati as-salatu fantashiru fi al-ardi wabtaghu min fadli Allahi wadhkuru Allaha kathiran la'allakum tuflihun
When the prayer is concluded, disperse in the land and seek the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah much, so that you may succeed.
Wa idha ra'aw tijaratan aw lahwan infaddu ilayha wa tarakuka qa'ima, qul ma 'inda Allahi khayrun mina al-lahwi wa mina at-tijarah, wallahu khayru ar-raziqin
And when they saw a transaction or a diversion they rushed to it and left you standing. Say: what is with Allah is better than the diversion and the trade. Allah is the best of providers.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Al-Jumu'ah is eleven verses, chapter 62, Madani. It opens by describing what a messenger actually does, in four verbs, and closes with a congregation walking out of a sermon because a trade caravan arrived in the market. Between those two points sits one of the most uncomfortable images in the Quran, aimed at people who carry knowledge and do not carry it.
The surah is short enough to read in a sitting and it legislates a weekly hard stop on commerce. That is the practical center of it. Everything else explains why the stop is necessary.
They left him standing in the pulpit and went to the caravan. The surah is named after the day they were supposed to be still.
Verses 1–4 · What He Was Sent To Do
He sent among the unlettered a messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.
Rasulan minhum: from among themselves. Not a stranger and not an import. The first qualification named is that he came from the people he was sent to.
Four verbs follow, in order. Yatlu 'alayhim ayatih, he recites the verses to them. Wa yuzakkihim, and he purifies them. Wa yu'allimuhumu al-kitaba wal-hikmah, and he teaches them the Book and the wisdom. Recitation, then purification, then instruction. The cleaning comes before the curriculum.
Wa in kanu min qablu lafi dalalin mubin: though before that they were in clear error. The starting condition is stated plainly so that the change is measurable.
Wa akharina minhum lamma yalhaqu bihim: and others among them who have not yet joined them. Al-Bukhari records the narration where the Prophet ﷺ was asked who these were, and he placed his hand on Salman al-Farisi and said that if faith were at the Pleiades, men from his people would reach it. The verse extends the sending forward in time to people not yet born.
From among them, reciting, purifying, teaching. And it was aimed at people who had not arrived yet.
Verse 5 · The Donkey Carrying Books
The likeness of those charged with the Torah who then did not carry it is the likeness of a donkey carrying volumes.
Kamathali al-himari yahmilu asfara: the image is exact and it is not about ignorance. The donkey is carrying the books. The weight is on its back, the contents are real, and none of it reaches the animal.
The charge is not that they never received the revelation. It is hummilu at-Tawrata, they were charged with it, and then thumma lam yahmiluha, they did not carry it. The same root is used for the burden they were given and the burden they failed to bear.
Bi'sa mathalu al-qawmi alladhina kadhdhabu bi-ayati Allah: an evil example. The verse is aimed at a specific community in a specific dispute, and the mechanism it describes belongs to anyone who accumulates religious knowledge without being changed by it.
Read it beside verse 2. The messenger's job included tazkiyah, purification, precisely because information alone produces the animal in verse 5.
The books were on its back the entire time. Carrying is not the same as bearing.
Verses 6–8 · Then Wish For Death
Say: if you claim that you alone are the allies of Allah, then wish for death, if you are truthful.
The challenge is a test of a claim, not a taunt. If proximity to Allah is exclusive to you, then the transition should be welcome. Wa la yatamannawnahu abadan bima qaddamat aydihim: and they will never wish for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead.
The reason given is not fear of the unknown. It is knowledge of the file. A man who has sent nothing ahead cannot want the accounting to begin.
Qul inna al-mawta alladhi tafirruna minhu fa-innahu mulaqikum: the death you flee from will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
The passage is a self-test more than a polemic. Your honest reaction to the thought of death is a reading of what you believe you have sent ahead.
The claim was measured against one question, and nobody would answer it.
Verses 9–11 · Leave the Trade
When the call is made for prayer on the day of congregation, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade.
Fas'aw ila dhikri Allahi wa dharu al-bay': hasten to the remembrance and leave the transaction. The command names commerce specifically, which is the thing hardest to interrupt and the thing everyone in that market was doing.
Dhalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum ta'lamun: that is better for you if you knew. The Quran again concedes that the valuation is not obvious to the man being asked to close his stall.
Fa idha qudiyati as-salatu fantashiru fi al-ardi wabtaghu min fadli Allah: when the prayer is concluded, disperse in the land and seek the bounty of Allah. The stop is bounded. Work is commanded again in the very next verse, which is the Quran refusing the monastic reading.
Wa idha ra'aw tijaratan aw lahwan infaddu ilayha wa tarakuka qa'ima: when they saw a transaction or a diversion, they rushed to it and left you standing. Al-Bukhari and Muslim record the caravan that arrived during the sermon and the small number who stayed. Qul ma 'inda Allahi khayrun mina al-lahwi wa mina at-tijarah. What is with Allah is better than the diversion and the trade.
One hour, once a week, with the market closed. They could not hold it, and the surah is named after the hour.

Verse 10The ReleaseWhen the prayer ends, disperse in the land and seek His bounty.
Verse 11The CaravanThey saw a trade and a diversion and left him standing. What is with Allah is better than both.
Why This Surah Is For You
Verse 5 is the risk of a man who studies. The books were on the donkey's back the whole time. Carrying material is not the same as being changed by it, and the surah puts purification before instruction in verse 2 for exactly that reason.
Verse 9 is a weekly hard stop on commerce, legislated. Not a suggestion to attend if the calendar allows. The market closes. Any operator who cannot close for one hour a week has an answer about what is actually running him.
Verse 10 protects the same man from the opposite error. Disperse and seek the bounty. The stop is bounded and the work is commanded again immediately, which means this surah is not asking you to withdraw. It is asking you to be interruptible.
Verse 11 is the honest ending. This happened to the best generation, in front of the Prophet ﷺ himself, over an ordinary caravan. The pull of the notification and the deal is not a modern weakness. It is old, and it is named.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Eleven Verses. Be Interruptible.
Close the stall on Friday. Block it in the calendar as immovable, and let people find it immovable.
After the prayer, go back to work deliberately. Verse 10 commands the dispersal and the seeking, so treat the return as obedience too.
Test yourself against verse 6 privately. What is your honest reaction to the thought of the accounting starting today, and what does that reaction say about what you have sent ahead.
Audit one piece of knowledge you carry and have not acted on. Verse 5 is about the gap between carrying and bearing.
The caravan came and the pulpit emptied. Close the stall, then go seek the bounty.
