The Surah · Al-Jinn

Qul uhiya ilayya annahu istama'a nafarun mina al-jinni faqalu inna sami'na qur'anan 'ajaba

Say: it has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened, and they said: we have heard an astonishing Quran.

Yahdi ila ar-rushdi fa-amanna bih, wa lan nushrika bi-Rabbina ahada

It guides to right conduct, so we believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord.

And exalted is the majesty of our Lord. He has taken neither a wife nor a son.

Wa annahu kana yaqulu safihuna 'ala Allahi shatata

And the foolish one among us used to say an outrage against Allah.

Wa anna zananna an lan taqula al-insu wal-jinnu 'ala Allahi kadhiba

And we had thought that men and jinn would never speak a lie against Allah.

And men from among humans used to seek refuge with men from among the jinn, and they increased them in burden.

Wa annahum zannu kama zanantum an lan yab'atha Allahu ahada

And they thought, as you thought, that Allah would never raise anyone up.

Wa anna lamasna as-sama'a fawajadnaha muli'at harasan shadidan wa shuhuba

And we reached toward the sky and found it filled with stern guards and burning flames.

Wa anna kunna naq'udu minha maqa'ida lis-sam', faman yastami'i al-ana yajid lahu shihaban rasada

And we used to sit there in places to listen, but whoever listens now finds a flame lying in wait for him.

Wa anna la nadri asharrun urida biman fi al-ardi am arada bihim Rabbuhum rashada

And we do not know whether evil is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends right guidance for them.

Wa anna minna as-salihuna wa minna duna dhalik, kunna tara'iqa qidada

And among us are the righteous, and among us are those below that. We were of divided ways.

And we knew that we could never escape Allah on earth, nor escape Him by fleeing.

And when we heard the guidance we believed in it. Whoever believes in his Lord fears neither loss nor burden.

Wa anna minna al-muslimuna wa minna al-qasitun, faman aslama fa-ula'ika taharraw rashada

And among us are those who submitted, and among us are those who deviated. Whoever submits has sought out right conduct.

Wa amma al-qasituna fakanu li-jahannama hataba

As for those who deviated, they became firewood for Hell.

Wa allawi istaqamu 'ala at-tariqati la-asqaynahum ma'an ghadaqa

And if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant water to drink,

Linaftinahum fih, wa man yu'rid 'an dhikri Rabbihi yaslukhu 'adhaban sa'ada

so that We may test them by it. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, He will drive him into a mounting punishment.

Wa anna al-masajida lillahi fala tad'u ma'a Allahi ahada

And the places of prostration belong to Allah, so do not call upon anyone alongside Allah.

Wa annahu lamma qama 'abdullahi yad'uhu kadu yakununa 'alayhi libada

And when the servant of Allah stood calling upon Him, they almost crowded on top of him in masses.

Say: I only call upon my Lord, and I associate no one with Him.

Say: I hold no power to harm you, and none to guide you.

Qul inni lan yujirani mina Allahi ahadun wa lan ajida min dunihi multahada

Say: no one can protect me from Allah, and I will find no refuge apart from Him.

Only a delivery from Allah and His messages. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has the fire of Hell, abiding in it forever.

Hatta idha ra'aw ma yu'aduna fasaya'lamuna man ad'afu nasiran wa aqallu 'adada

Until, when they see what they are promised, they will know who is weaker in helpers and fewer in number.

Qul in adri aqaribun ma tu'aduna am yaj'alu lahu Rabbi amada

Say: I do not know whether what you are promised is near, or whether my Lord will set a long term for it.

'Alimu al-ghaybi fala yuzhiru 'ala ghaybihi ahada

He is the Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His unseen to anyone,

Illa mani irtada min rasulin fa-innahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wa min khalfihi rasada

except to a messenger He has approved. Then He dispatches guards before him and behind him,

Liya'lama an qad ablaghu risalati Rabbihim wa ahata bima ladayhim wa ahsa kulla shay'in 'adada

so that it may be known that they have delivered the messages of their Lord. He encompasses what they have, and He has counted everything by number.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

Surah Al-Jinn is twenty-eight verses, chapter 72, Makki. It reports an event the Prophet ﷺ did not witness. A company of jinn heard him reciting, believed on the spot, and returned to their own people as warners, and the surah is largely their speech, quoted back. Roughly the first half is what they said. The second half is what he was told to say.

The surah arrives in the hardest stretch of his life, when the message was being refused by the people in front of him. The reply is a report that it had already been accepted by an audience he did not know was listening. That is the structure of the whole chapter, and it is the reason it lands where it lands.

He was being refused to his face while a delegation he could not see was already carrying it home.

Verses 1–7 · The Audience He Did Not Know He Had

Say: it has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened, and they said: we have heard an astonishing Quran.

Qul uhiya ilayya: say, it has been revealed to me. He learns about his own audience by revelation. He did not see them, did not address them, and did not know the reciting had traveled.

Yahdi ila ar-rushd fa-amanna bih: it guides to right conduct, so we believed in it. Rushd is soundness of judgment, the opposite of being led badly. Their evidence for it is not a miracle they were shown. It is the content itself.

Wa lan nushrika bi-Rabbina ahada: we will never associate anyone with our Lord. The conclusion is drawn immediately and stated as a permanent commitment, in one sitting.

Wa annahu ta'ala jaddu Rabbina ma ittakhadha sahibatan wa la walada: exalted is the majesty of our Lord, He has taken neither wife nor son. They correct the theology of their own species before they do anything else.

Wa annahu kana rijalun min al-insi ya'udhuna bi-rijalin mina al-jinni fazaduhum rahaqa: men from among humans used to seek refuge with men from among the jinn, and they increased them in burden. The transaction is named exactly. The one seeking cover from a created thing gets more weight, not less.

They heard it once, corrected their theology, and went home as warners. He learned about it afterward.

Verses 8–10 · The Sky Sealed

We reached toward the sky and found it filled with stern guards and burning flames.

Wa anna lamasna as-sama'a: we touched the sky. The word is of feeling for something in the dark, which is what unauthorized access looks like.

Muli'at harasan shadidan wa shuhuba: filled with severe guards and flames. Their access was open before this and is closed now, and the closure is dated to the arrival of the revelation.

Wa anna la nadri asharrun urida biman fi al-ardi am arada bihim Rabbuhum rashada: we do not know whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends right guidance for them. Their honesty is worth noting. They report a change and refuse to interpret it beyond their knowledge.

The channel they had been using was shut, and they said plainly that they did not know why.

Verses 11–15 · Different Paths

Among us are the righteous, and among us are others. We were of divided ways.

Wa anna minna as-salihuna wa minna duna dhalik: among us are the righteous and among us are those below that. They describe their own people without flattening them into one type.

Kunna tara'iqa qidada: we were on divided paths, sects and factions. Said about themselves, without defensiveness.

Wa anna zananna an lan nu'jiza Allaha fi al-ardi wa lan nu'jizahu haraba: we knew we could never escape Allah on earth, nor escape Him by fleeing. The conclusion that produced their submission is the recognition that there is nowhere outside His reach, and that recognition arrived before any threat did.

Fa man aslama fa-ula'ika taharraw rashada: whoever submits has sought out right conduct. Aslama and rashad are put in the same sentence again, which is the surah's repeated argument. Submission is not the abandonment of judgment. It is the exercise of it.

They named their own factions honestly, and then named the one thing none of them could do, which was get away.

Verses 16–19 · Water for Staying Straight

If they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant water to drink.

Wa alaw istaqamu 'ala at-tariqati la-asqaynahum ma'an ghadaqa: had they stayed straight on the road, We would have given them water in abundance. Read this beside Surah Nuh, verses 10 to 12. Two consecutive surahs in this juz attach material provision to a spiritual position, forgiveness sought in one and steadfastness held in the other.

Linaftinahum fih: so that We may test them by it. The abundance is named as a test in the same breath it is promised. Nothing in the passage says the water is a reward you get to relax inside.

Wa anna al-masajida lillahi fala tad'u ma'a Allahi ahada: the places of prostration belong to Allah, so do not call upon anyone alongside Him. The verse is about ownership. Wherever the forehead goes down, that ground is His, and the address given there belongs to Him alone.

Wa annahu lamma qama 'abdullahi yad'uhu kadu yakununa 'alayhi libada: when the servant of Allah stood calling upon Him, they almost crowded on top of him in masses. He is named here by the only title that matters in this surah, the servant of Allah, at the exact moment he is being swarmed.

Straightness brings water, water brings a test, and the ground you pray on was never yours.

Verses 20–24 · I Own Nothing For You

Say: I only call upon my Lord and I associate no one with Him. Say: I hold no power to harm you or to guide you.

Qul innama ad'u Rabbi wa la ushriku bihi ahada: the first correction is aimed at his own followers as much as his enemies. What he does is call upon his Lord. That is the whole description of the job.

Qul inni la amliku lakum darran wa la rashada: I do not own the power to harm you, and I do not own your right guidance. The man at the center of the movement disclaims both the threat and the reward. Every cult of personality dies on this verse.

Qul inni lan yujirani mina Allahi ahadun wa lan ajida min dunihi multahada: no one can protect me from Allah and I will find no refuge apart from Him. He puts himself under the same terms he is preaching, publicly, with no exemption.

Illa balaghan mina Allahi wa risalatih: only a delivery from Allah and His messages. The role is reduced to transmission, and the reduction is the point.

No harm to give, no guidance to grant, no refuge of his own. Only delivery.

Verses 25–28 · Guarded on Both Sides

He is the Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His unseen to anyone, except to a messenger He has approved.

Qul in adri aqaribun ma tu'aduna am yaj'alu lahu Rabbi amada: say, I do not know whether what you are promised is near, or whether my Lord will set a long term for it. The schedule is withheld from the man delivering the message, which is the same position Al-Mulk left him in.

'Alimu al-ghaybi fala yuzhiru 'ala ghaybihi ahada, illa mani irtada min rasul: the unseen is disclosed to no one except a messenger He has approved. The exception is narrow and it is named, which closes the door on every claimant.

Fa-innahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wa min khalfihi rasada: He dispatches guards before him and behind him. The transmission is protected in both directions, which is a statement about the integrity of the text as it moves.

Liya'lama an qad ablaghu risalati Rabbihim, wa ahata bima ladayhim, wa ahsa kulla shay'in 'adada: so that it may be known that they have delivered the messages of their Lord. He encompasses what they have and has counted everything by number. The surah closes on delivery and on counting.

Delivery, guarded on both sides, and everything counted by number. That is the whole file.

Verses 25–28The GuardThe unseen is disclosed only to an approved messenger, guarded before and behind, and everything is counted.

Why This Surah Is For You

This is the surah for a man whose work reaches people he will never meet. He recited, he was refused by the room, and an audience he could not see took it home and became warners. You do not get to see your own distribution. Deliver as though the room is not the audience, because in this surah it was not.

Verses 21 and 22 are the antidote to what happens to men who gather a following. I own no harm for you and no guidance. No one shields me either. He said it out loud, in public, at the peak of his authority. Any man building a movement should be able to say those two verses about himself without flinching.

Verse 16 sits beside Surah Nuh verses 10 to 12 and they should be read together. Forgiveness sought opens provision, and staying straight on the road opens provision. Then verse 17 names the abundance as a test, which closes the loop that a prosperity reading would leave open.

Verse 6 describes an old transaction in a form you will recognize. Men seeking cover from something created, and receiving more weight rather than less. Every arrangement that promises protection in exchange for dependence is the same trade, and the verse gives you the outcome in advance.

The Practice · Daily Integration

Twenty-Eight Verses. Deliver and Disclaim.

Say verses 21 and 22 about yourself, out loud, whenever your name starts carrying weight with people. I own no harm for you and no guidance, and no one shields me either.

Treat every recitation and every message as though it is being heard by people not in the room, because that is exactly what this surah reports.

Pair verse 16 with Surah Nuh verses 10 to 12 in one sitting. Forgiveness and steadfastness, both attached to provision, and provision named as a test.

Check what you are seeking cover from. Verse 6 names the trade where seeking refuge in a created thing returns more burden, not less.

He was refused by the room and carried by an audience he never saw. Deliver, and leave the counting to the One who counts by number.
