The Surah · Al-Jathiyah

Ha Meem

Ha Meem.

Tanzilu al-kitabi mina Allahi al-'Azizi al-Hakim

The sending down of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Inna fi as-samawati wal-ardi la-ayatin lil-mu'minin

In the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.

Wa fi khalqikum wa ma yabuththu min dabbatin ayatun liqawmin yuqinun

And in your own creation, and in the creatures He scatters, are signs for a people of certainty.

Wakhtilafi al-layli wan-nahari wa ma anzala Allahu mina as-sama'i min rizqin fa ahya bihi al-arda ba'da mawtiha wa tasrifi ar-riyahi ayatun liqawmin ya'qilun

And in the alternation of night and day, and the provision Allah sends down from the sky by which He revives the earth after its death, and the directing of the winds, are signs for a people who reason.

Tilka ayatu Allahi natluha 'alayka bil-haqq, fabi ayyi hadithin ba'da Allahi wa ayatihi yu'minun

These are the verses of Allah, which We recite to you in truth. So in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe.

Waylun likulli affakin athim

Woe to every sinful liar,

Yasma'u ayati Allahi tutla 'alayhi thumma yusirru mustakbiran ka-an lam yasma'ha, fabashshirhu bi'adhabin alim

who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as though he never heard them. So give him news of a painful punishment.

Wa idha 'alima min ayatina shay'an ittakhadhaha huzuwa, ula'ika lahum 'adhabun muhin

When he learns anything of Our verses, he takes it as a joke. Those will have a humiliating punishment.

Ahead of them is Hell. Nothing they earned will help them, nor will what they took as protectors besides Allah, and they will have a great punishment.

Hadha huda, walladhina kafaru bi-ayati Rabbihim lahum 'adhabun min rijzin alim

This is guidance. Those who deny the verses of their Lord will have a punishment of painful torment.

Allah is the One who subjected the sea to you so that ships may run through it by His command, and so that you may seek of His bounty, and so that you may be grateful.

Wa sakhkhara lakum ma fi as-samawati wa ma fi al-ardi jami'an minh, inna fi dhalika la-ayatin liqawmin yatafakkarun

He subjected to you everything in the heavens and everything in the earth, all of it from Him. In that are signs for a people who reflect.

Qul lilladhina amanu yaghfiru lilladhina la yarjuna ayyama Allahi liyajziya qawman bima kanu yaksibun

Tell those who believe to forgive those who do not expect the days of Allah, so that He may repay a people for what they used to earn.

Man 'amila salihan falinafsih, wa man asa'a fa'alayha, thumma ila Rabbikum turja'un

Whoever does right does it for himself, and whoever does wrong does it against himself. Then to your Lord you are returned.

Wa laqad atayna bani Isra'ila al-kitaba wal-hukma wan-nubuwwata wa razaqnahum mina at-tayyibati wa faddalnahum 'ala al-'alamin

We gave the Children of Israel the Book, the judgment, and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and favored them above the worlds.

Wa ataynahum bayyinatin mina al-amr, famakhtalafu illa min ba'di ma ja'ahumu al-'ilmu baghyan baynahum, inna Rabbaka yaqdi baynahum yawma al-qiyamati fima kanu fihi yakhtalifun

We gave them clear proofs of the matter. They did not differ until after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to differ about.

Then We set you upon a clear way of the matter, so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.

Innahum lan yughnu 'anka mina Allahi shay'a, wa inna az-zalimina ba'duhum awliya'u ba'd, wallahu waliyyu al-muttaqin

They will not help you at all against Allah. The wrongdoers are protectors of one another, and Allah is the protector of those who guard against evil.

Hadha basa'iru lin-nasi wa hudan wa rahmatun liqawmin yuqinun

This is clear insight for people, and guidance and mercy for a people of certainty.

Am hasiba alladhina ijtarahu as-sayyi'ati an naj'alahum kalladhina amanu wa 'amilu as-salihati sawa'an mahyahum wa mamatuhum, sa'a ma yahkumun

Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We will make them like those who believe and do right, equal in their living and their dying. Evil is what they judge.

Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth, and so that every soul may be repaid for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.

Afara'ayta mani ittakhadha ilahahu hawahu wa adallahu Allahu 'ala 'ilmin wa khatama 'ala sam'ihi wa qalbihi wa ja'ala 'ala basarihi ghishawah, faman yahdihi min ba'di Allah, afala tadhakkarun

Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god, and Allah leaves him astray upon knowledge, and seals his hearing and his heart, and places a covering over his sight. Who will guide him after Allah. Will you not take heed.

Wa qalu ma hiya illa hayatuna ad-dunya namutu wa nahya wa ma yuhlikuna illa ad-dahr, wa ma lahum bidhalika min 'ilm, in hum illa yazunnun

They say: there is nothing but our worldly life. We die and we live, and nothing destroys us except time. They have no knowledge of that. They are only assuming.

Wa idha tutla 'alayhim ayatuna bayyinatin ma kana hujjatahum illa an qalu i'tu bi-aba'ina in kuntum sadiqin

When Our clear verses are recited to them, their only argument is to say: bring back our fathers, if you are truthful.

Say: Allah gives you life, then causes you to die, then gathers you to the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.

Wa lillahi mulku as-samawati wal-ard, wa yawma taqumu as-sa'atu yawma'idhin yakhsaru al-mubtilun

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. On the Day the Hour arrives, on that Day the falsifiers will lose.

Wa tara kulla ummatin jathiyah, kullu ummatin tud'a ila kitabiha, al-yawma tujzawna ma kuntum ta'malun

You will see every nation kneeling. Every nation will be called to its record. Today you are repaid for what you used to do.

Hadha kitabuna yantiqu 'alaykum bil-haqq, inna kunna nastansikhu ma kuntum ta'malun

This, Our record, speaks about you in truth. We were having transcribed whatever you used to do.

Fa-amma alladhina amanu wa 'amilu as-salihati fayudkhiluhum Rabbuhum fi rahmatih, dhalika huwa al-fawzu al-mubin

As for those who believed and did right, their Lord will enter them into His mercy. That is the clear attainment.

Wa amma alladhina kafaru afalam takun ayati tutla 'alaykum fastakbartum wa kuntum qawman mujrimin

As for those who denied: were My verses not recited to you, and you were arrogant and were a criminal people.

When it was said that the promise of Allah is true and there is no doubt about the Hour, you said: we do not know what the Hour is. We only assume, and we are not certain.

The evils of what they did will appear to them, and what they used to mock will close in on them.

It will be said: today We forget you as you forgot the meeting of this day of yours. Your refuge is the Fire, and you have no helpers.

That is because you took the verses of Allah as a joke and the life of this world deceived you. So today they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be asked to make amends.

Falillahi al-hamdu Rabbi as-samawati wa Rabbi al-ardi Rabbi al-'alamin

So to Allah belongs all praise, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the worlds.

To Him belongs the greatness in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

Surah Al-Jathiyah is thirty-seven verses, chapter 45, Makki. It takes its name from a single image near the end, of every nation on its knees, called forward to its own record.

The surah contains the sharpest description in the Quran of a specific modern position, in verse 23, and the sharpest description of a specific modern argument, in verse 24. Both are stated in one line each and neither is argued with at length, because the surah has already laid out the evidence in its opening.

Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god?

Verses 3–11 · Four Fields of Evidence

In the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.

The evidence is presented in four expanding fields, and each is closed with a phrase naming who it is for.

Inna fi as-samawati wal-ardi la-ayatin lil-mu'minin: the heavens and the earth, for the believers.

Wa fi khalqikum wa ma yabuththu min dabbatin ayatun liqawmin yuqinun: in your own creation and the creatures He scatters, signs for a people of certainty.

Wakhtilafi al-layli wan-nahari wa ma anzala Allahu mina as-sama'i min rizqin fa ahya bihi al-arda ba'da mawtiha wa tasrifi ar-riyahi ayatun liqawmin ya'qilun: the alternation of night and day, the provision sent down that revives dead ground, and the directing of the winds, signs for a people who reason.

Notice the ordering. Belief, then certainty, then reasoning. The evidence gets closer to the reader at each step, from the sky, to his own body, to the weather, and the faculty named gets more active.

Wa laqad ataynahum bayyinatin mina al-amr: We gave them clear proofs of the matter. The refusal that follows is described as coming after knowledge arrived, out of envy among themselves.

Sky, then your own body, then the weather. The evidence moves closer and the faculty required moves from believing to reasoning.

Verse 23 · Desire as a God

Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god, and Allah leaves him astray upon knowledge?

Afara'ayta mani ittakhadha ilahahu hawah: literally, who took his desire as his god. Not who worships a stone. Who has installed his own inclination in the position where the deity goes, so that what he wants determines what is true.

Wa adallahu Allahu 'ala 'ilm: and Allah left him astray upon knowledge. The straying happens on top of knowledge rather than in the absence of it, which is what makes this verse describe an educated man rather than an ignorant one.

Wa khatama 'ala sam'ihi wa qalbihi wa ja'ala 'ala basarihi ghishawah: sealed his hearing and his heart, and placed a covering over his sight. The three faculties that receive are all closed, in that order.

Faman yahdihi min ba'di Allah, afala tadhakkarun: so who will guide him after Allah. The question is left open, and the surah moves on.

This verse and verse 24 sit together. The first describes the position and the second gives the argument the position produces.

The god is his own wanting, and the straying happened on top of knowledge, not instead of it.

Verse 24 · Nothing But Time

They say: there is nothing but our worldly life. We die and we live, and nothing destroys us except time.

Wa qalu ma hiya illa hayatuna ad-dunya namutu wa nahya wa ma yuhlikuna illa ad-dahr: the position is quoted in full and it is a complete worldview in eleven words. This life only, birth and death as a cycle, and time as the only agent of destruction.

Wa ma lahum bidhalika min 'ilm, in hum illa yazunnun: and they have no knowledge of that. They only assume. The Quran's answer is not a counterargument. It is a statement about the epistemic status of the claim, that it is a guess presented as a conclusion.

Al-Bukhari records the hadith qudsi in which Allah says that the son of Adam injures Him by insulting time, and that He is time, in the sense that He is the one who directs the night and day. Ibn Kathir cites it in commenting on this verse, and the point is precise. Blaming ad-dahr assigns agency to a thing that has none.

Wa idha tutla 'alayhim ayatuna bayyinatin ma kana hujjatahum illa an qalu i'tu bi-aba'ina in kuntum sadiqin: their only argument is a demand to have their fathers brought back. The surah notes that this is the entirety of the case.

Time destroys us. The Quran calls that a guess, and names the one who actually directs the night and the day.

Verses 27–37 · Every Nation Kneeling

You will see every nation kneeling, every nation called to its record.

Wa tara kulla ummatin jathiyah, kullu ummatin tud'a ila kitabiha: kneeling, and called to its own book. The posture is one of exhausted waiting, and the calling is by nation, then resolved to the individual.

Al-yawma tujzawna ma kuntum ta'malun: today you are recompensed for what you used to do.

Hadha kitabuna yantiqu 'alaykum bil-haqq, inna kunna nastansikhu ma kuntum ta'malun: this, Our record, speaks about you in truth. We were having transcribed whatever you used to do. The record is described as speaking, and the transcription as continuous while it was happening.

The surah then divides the outcomes. Those who believed and did right are entered into mercy, that is the clear attainment. And those who disbelieved are asked whether the verses were not recited to them, and answered with, you took the promise of Allah lightly.

Falillahi al-hamdu Rabbi as-samawati wa Rabbi al-ard, Rabbi al-'alamin. Wa lahu al-kibriya'u fi as-samawati wal-ard, wa huwa al-'azizu al-hakim: to Him belongs the greatness in the heavens and the earth. The surah that opened on evidence closes on greatness.

Every nation on its knees, and a record that speaks about you in truth. It was being transcribed the whole time.

Verses 27–37The KneelingEvery nation on its knees, called to its record, which speaks in truth because it was transcribed as it happened.

Why This Surah Is For You

Verse 23 is the most precise description of modern unbelief in the Quran, and it is not about atheism. It describes a man whose own wanting occupies the position of the deity, so that his desire decides what is true. That is available to a believing man on any given day, in any single decision.

The same verse says he was left astray upon knowledge. Not in ignorance. Knowledge does not protect against this, which is why the verse is aimed at people who read.

Verse 24 quotes the materialist position exactly, and the Quran's reply is about the status of the claim rather than its content. They have no knowledge of it, they are only assuming. It is worth noticing that the Quran does not treat the position as an argument to be beaten. It treats it as a guess presented with confidence.

Verse 29 describes the record as speaking, and the transcription as happening in real time, while the deeds were being done. Not compiled later from memory. Written as it occurred, which is the same picture Qaf gave with the two seated recorders.

The Practice · Daily Integration

Thirty-Seven Verses. Check Who Is Deciding.

Run verse 23 on a single decision this week. Did the evidence decide it, or did what you wanted decide it and then recruit the evidence.

When you hear the argument in verse 24, do not answer it with a better argument first. Ask what it is grounded in, which is what the next line does.

Read the four fields in verses 3 to 6 in one sitting and notice the ordering, from the sky down to your own body.

Remember verse 29 while you work. The transcription is happening now, not later.

Every nation kneeling, called to a record that was written while it happened. Check who is deciding what is true for you.
