The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Al-Infitar is nineteen verses, chapter 82. It is one of three surahs in Juz Amma that opens with the phrase idha — describing the cosmic events of the Day of Judgment. The other two are At-Takwir (81) and Al-Inshiqaq (84). The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said: whoever wishes to see the Day of Judgment as if seeing it with his own eyes, let him read these three surahs.
Al-Infitar moves through four distinct sections. Verses 1–5 describe the cosmic dissolution and the disclosure that follows. Verses 6–9 deliver one of the most penetrating personal questions in the entire Quran. Verses 10–12 introduce the Kiraman Katibin — the noble recording angels. And verses 13–19 describe the two final destinations and close with the declaration of total divine sovereignty on the Day.
The sky breaks apart. The stars scatter. The seas gush. The graves overturn. The soul learns. Then the question lands: what deceived you about your Lord, the Most Generous?
Verses 1–4 · The Four Cosmic Events
When the sky breaks apart. The stars scatter. The seas burst forth. The graves are overturned.
Idha as-sama-u infatarat: the dome that seems most permanent breaks. The root f-t-r is the same root as fitrah and Al-Fatir. The first event of the sequence is the failure of what looks most fixed.
Wa idha al-kawakibu intatharat: the stars fall from their fixed positions. The cosmic order operating since creation is dissolved.
Wa idha al-biharu fujjirat: the seas burst — either overflowing every boundary, or igniting into flame. Both classical readings are supported. Either way, water violates every expectation of how water behaves.
Wa idha al-quburu bu'thirat: the graves are flipped, their contents disgorged. From the sky down to the ground. Sky. Stars. Seas. Graves. Nothing remains in its accustomed state.
Every layer of reality decommissioned simultaneously.
Verse 5 · The Disclosure
A soul will know what it has put forward and left behind.
'Alimat nafsun ma qaddamat wa akhkharat: every soul, distributively, will know. Qaddamat is what it sent forward — the deeds performed. Akhkharat is what it left behind — the consequences that continued operating in the world after the person died: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, a righteous child who prays for them. The Prophet ﷺ named all three.
The implication for a man building anything of significance is direct. The akhkharat is the multiplier on the qaddamat. If your work continues operating after you are gone, every man it shapes continues registering deeds for you. Build accordingly.
Verses 6–9 · The Piercing Question
O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous? Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you. In whatever form He willed He assembled you. No! But you deny the Recompense.
Ma gharraka bi-Rabbika al-Karim: many scholars consider this the most personally piercing question in the entire Quran. The verb gharra means to deceive, delude, seduce. The construction assumes that something did deceive you and asks what. And the qualifier — al-Karim, the Most Generous — makes the question more devastating. What lie about a Lord who has done nothing but give was strong enough to pull you into rebellion?
The classical answers: the apparent forbearance of Allah, who does not punish immediately. The dunya itself with its immediate pleasures. Shaytan, the active deceiver. All three operative.
Alladhi khalaqaka fasawwaka fa-'adalak: created, proportioned, balanced. Three verbs of deliberate engineering at every level. In whatever form He willed He assembled you. The assembly was specific to you — your face, height, capacity, family, era.
Kalla bal tukadhdhibuna bid-din: the actual root of the deception is identified — denial of the Day of Recompense. If the accounting were taken seriously, the deception would lose its power.
What deceived you about a Lord who is the Most Generous? The hardest question in the Quran. Sit with it.
Verses 10–12 · The Kiraman Katibin
And indeed over you are guardians. Noble and recording. They know whatever you do.
Wa inna 'alaykum la-hafizin: the doubled emphasis leaves no room for doubt. The guardians are continuously assigned and continuously present.
Kiraman katibin: noble and recording. Kiraman shares the root with al-Karim, the divine name in verse 6 — the angels share the quality of nobility. Katibin — active scribes, maintaining a written record of every action. Two angels per person: good deeds on the right, bad deeds on the left. The protocols favor the believer: intend a good deed and it is written; perform it and it is written multiplied; intend a bad deed but refrain for Allah's sake and a good deed is written instead.
Ya'lamuna ma taf'alun: the recording is comprehensive. Not just public actions — private ones too. The man who operates with this awareness acts differently. The Kiraman Katibin are not enemies. They are witnesses. The believer welcomes their presence.
Verses 13–16 · The Two Destinations
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure. The wicked in Hellfire. They will enter it on the Day of Recompense. And they will not be absent from it.
Al-abrar: the righteous — those true to their commitments, to Allah and to other human beings. La-fi na'im — definitely in pleasure.
Al-fujjar: the wicked — those who broke through proper boundaries, who chose fujur over taqwa (the binary from Ash-Shams). La-fi jahim — definitely in the intense blazing fire. Wa ma hum 'anha bi-gha-ibin: no route of absence, no escape, no slipping away.
Verses 17–19 · The Closing Sovereignty
What can make you know what the Day of Recompense is? Then, what can make you know? The Day when no soul will possess anything for another. The command, that Day, is with Allah.
Ma adraka ma yawmu ad-din — repeated: the rhetorical formula doubled. The reality is so vast that even the impossibility of full description requires repetition.
Yawma la tamliku nafsun li-nafsin shay-a: on that Day, no soul has anything to offer another soul. The networks of mutual support that operate in this life are suspended. Every soul stands for itself.
Wal-amru yawma-idhin lillah: the command, that Day, is with Allah. Every form of human authority that operated in this life — governments, kings, billionaires, celebrities, platforms — is revealed for what it was: provisional arrangements that depended on Allah's permission. The amr was always His. The Day is just the disclosure of what was always the case.
Every other authority dissolved. The amr returns to where it always belonged.

Why This Surah Is For You
Al-Infitar carries the single most personally penetrating question in the Quran. Ma gharraka bi-Rabbika al-Karim. For you specifically, the question is sharper because you have been given much. The man with nothing is deceived into thinking his Lord has failed him. The man with much is deceived into thinking his Lord is satisfied with him simply because he has been given. The deceptions are opposite — the distance produced is the same.
Install the Kiraman Katibin verses into your operational awareness. Every meeting, every workout, every conversation, every dollar transaction, every private thought — the noble scribes write it all. Not as paranoia. As operating awareness. The believer welcomes their witness.
Carry verse 19 as permanent perspective. Wal-amru yawma-idhin lillah. Every other authority in your life is provisional. The platforms, the algorithms, the gatekeepers — all operate under permission. Build with this clarity in your chest. You are working under the gaze of the one true Authority.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Nineteen Verses. See The Day.
Three to four verses per day spoken aloud — installed into salah by day six. Pair it in recitation with At-Takwir (81) and Al-Inshiqaq (84) — the three surahs the Prophet ﷺ recommended for those who want to see the Day as if with their own eyes.
Carry verse 6 as a periodic self-examination question. Ma gharraka bi-Rabbika al-Karim. What is deceiving me about my Lord, the Most Generous? The answer changes by season. Name it. Dismantle it.
Use verses 10–12 as daily operational awareness. The Kiraman Katibin are present. The recording is continuous. Live as a man being witnessed by noble scribes. Conduct yourself in a way that they would be honored to write down.
Use verse 19 as the closing perspective on any decision that involves human authorities. The amr is His. Whatever the immediate gatekeeper requires or threatens or offers, the amr that ultimately matters is His.
The sky breaks. The stars scatter. The soul knows. The question lands. Sit with it. Answer it honestly. The Day is not waiting on the answer.
