The Surah · Al-Haqqah
Al-haqqah
The Inevitable Reality.
Ma al-haqqah
What is the Inevitable Reality?
Wa ma adraka ma al-haqqah
And what will make you know what the Inevitable Reality is?
Kadhdhabat Thamudu wa 'Adun bil-qari'ah
Thamud and 'Ad denied the Striking Calamity.
Fa-amma Thamudu fa-uhliku bit-taghiyah
As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overwhelming blast.
Wa amma 'Adun fa-uhliku birihin sarsarin 'atiyah
As for 'Ad, they were destroyed by a violent, screaming wind.
Sakhkharaha 'alayhim sab'a layalin wa thamaniyata ayyamin husuma, fatara al-qawma fiha sar'a ka-annahum a'jazu nakhlin khawiyah
He set it over them for seven nights and eight days in continuous succession. You would see the people lying fallen in it as if they were the hollow trunks of fallen palms.
Fahal tara lahum min baqiyah
So do you see any remnant of them?
Wa ja'a Fir'awnu wa man qablahu wal-mu'tafikatu bil-khati'ah
Pharaoh came, and those before him, and the overturned cities, carrying the same sin.
Fa'asaw rasula Rabbihim fa-akhadhahum akhdhatan rabiyah
They disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a mounting grip.
Inna lamma tagha al-ma'u hamalnakum fi al-jariyah
When the water transgressed its limit, We carried you in the sailing ship.
Linaj'alaha lakum tadhkiratan wa ta'iyaha udhunun wa'iyah
So that We might make it a reminder for you, and so that a retaining ear would retain it.
Fa-idha nufikha fi as-suri nafkhatun wahidah
When the Trumpet is blown with a single blast,
Wa humilati al-ardu wal-jibalu fadukkata dakkatan wahidah
and the earth and the mountains are lifted and crushed with one blow,
Fayawma'idhin waqa'ati al-waqi'ah
on that Day the Event falls.
Wanshaqqati as-sama'u fahiya yawma'idhin wahiyah
The sky splits, and on that Day it is frail.
Wal-malaku 'ala arja'iha, wa yahmilu 'arsha Rabbika fawqahum yawma'idhin thamaniyah
The angels are on its edges, and eight bear the Throne of your Lord above them that Day.
Yawma'idhin tu'radun la takhfa minkum khafiyah
That Day you are presented, and nothing hidden of you will remain hidden.
Fa-amma man utiya kitabahu biyaminihi fayaqulu ha'umu iqra'u kitabiyah
As for the one given his record in his right hand, he says: come, read my record.
Inni zanantu anni mulaqin hisabiyah
I was certain I would meet my accounting.

Fahuwa fi 'ishatin radiyah
So he is in a pleasing life,
Fi jannatin 'aliyah
in a lofty garden,
Qutufuha daniyah
its fruit hanging close.
Kulu washrabu hani'an bima aslaftum fi al-ayyami al-khaliyah
Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you sent ahead in the days now gone.
Wa amma man utiya kitabahu bishimalihi fayaqulu ya laytani lam uta kitabiyah
As for the one given his record in his left hand, he says: I wish I had not been given my record,
Wa lam adri ma hisabiyah
and had never known my accounting.
Ya laytaha kanati al-qadiyah
I wish it had been the end.

Ma aghna 'anni maliyah
My wealth has availed me nothing.
Halaka 'anni sultaniyah
My authority has left me.
Khudhuhu faghulluh
Seize him and bind him,
Thumma al-jahima salluh
then drive him into the Blaze,
Thumma fi silsilatin dhar'uha sab'una dhira'an fasluquh
then insert him into a chain seventy cubits long.
He did not believe in Allah the Most Great,
Wa la yahuddu 'ala ta'ami al-miskin
and he did not urge the feeding of the poor.
Falaysa lahu al-yawma hahuna hamim
So today he has no loyal friend here,
Wa la ta'amun illa min ghislin
and no food except from the washing of wounds,
La ya'kuluhu illa al-khati'un
which none eat but those in error.

Fala uqsimu bima tubsirun
I swear by what you see
Wa ma la tubsirun
and by what you do not see,
Innahu laqawlu rasulin karim
it is the word of a noble messenger.
Wa ma huwa biqawli sha'ir, qalilan ma tu'minun
It is not the word of a poet. Little do you believe.
Wa la biqawli kahin, qalilan ma tadhakkarun
Nor the word of a soothsayer. Little do you take heed.
Tanzilun min Rabbi al-'alamin
It is a sending down from the Lord of the worlds.
Wa law taqawwala 'alayna ba'da al-aqawil
Had he invented sayings and attributed them to Us,
La-akhadhna minhu bil-yamin
We would have seized him by the right hand,
Thumma laqata'na minhu al-watin
then severed his aorta,
Fama minkum min ahadin 'anhu hajizin
and none of you could have shielded him.
Wa innahu latadhkiratun lil-muttaqin
It is a reminder for the God-conscious.
Wa inna lana'lamu anna minkum mukadhdhibin
We know that among you are those who deny.
Wa innahu lahasratun 'ala al-kafirin
It is a source of regret for the disbelievers.
Wa innahu lahaqqu al-yaqin
It is the certain truth.
Fasabbih bismi Rabbika al-'azim
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Al-Haqqah is fifty-two verses, chapter 69, Makki. It opens by naming the Day three times in three lines and then refusing to define it, which is the point. The surah then does something the Quran does often and this surah does with unusual force. It moves from the destruction of specific nations, to the mechanics of the Day itself, to a single man holding a book, and it narrows the whole cosmic event down to what is written on one page in one hand.
The two charges filed against the man in the left hand are worth reading before anything else in the surah. He did not believe in Allah the Most Great, and he did not urge the feeding of the poor. Belief and the feeding of other people are placed side by side as one file.
The sky splits, the mountains are crushed in a single blow, and the surah spends its longest passage on two men holding two books.
Verses 1–12 · The Nations That Called It a Lie
The Inevitable Reality. What is the Inevitable Reality? And what will make you know what the Inevitable Reality is?
Al-Haqqah is from the root of truth and of what is due. It is the Day on which everything comes true and every claim falls due. Naming it three times without defining it is the surah establishing that the thing is beyond the reader before the reader is walked through it.
Thamud and 'Ad are given first, and each is destroyed by an instrument matched to it. Thamud by the tagiyah, the overwhelming blast. 'Ad by a wind described as violent and screaming, sent over them for seven nights and eight days in continuous succession.
Fatara al-qawma fiha sar'a ka-annahum a'jazu nakhlin khawiyah: you would see the people lying fallen as if they were the hollow trunks of fallen palms. The image is of things that look solid and are empty inside.
Fahal tara lahum min baqiyah: do you see any remnant of them. The question is aimed at a people who could see the ruins from their trade routes.
Inna lamma tagha al-ma'u hamalnakum fi al-jariyah: when the water transgressed its limit We carried you in the sailing ship. Every person alive descends from those who were carried. The rescue is your own lineage, not a story about someone else.
Litaj'alaha lakum tadhkiratan wa ta'iyaha udhunun wa'iyah: so that We might make it a reminder for you, and so that a retaining ear would retain it. The verse names the organ that matters, and it is not the ear that hears. It is the one that keeps.
Four nations, one flood, and a question about remnants. The evidence is on the ground and the requirement is an ear that keeps.
Verses 13–18 · One Blast
When the Trumpet is blown with a single blast, and the earth and the mountains are lifted and crushed with one blow.
Nafkhatun wahidah: a single blast. No sequence, no warning shot. The word for one is doing the work.
Fadukkata dakkatan wahidah: crushed with one blow. The mountains, which are the standing metaphor for permanence in the language, are handled in one motion.
Wanshaqqati as-sama'u fahiya yawma'idhin wahiyah: the sky splits and on that Day it is frail. The ceiling of the world is described with a word used for something that has lost its strength.
Wa yahmilu 'arsha Rabbika fawqahum yawma'idhin thamaniyah: eight bear the Throne of your Lord above them that Day. The Quran gives the number and gives nothing else, and the mufassirun including Ibn Kathir stop where the text stops.
Yawma'idhin tu'radun la takhfa minkum khafiyah: that Day you are presented, and nothing hidden of you will remain hidden. The presentation is the whole event, restated at human scale.
One blast, one blow, a frail sky, and then a review in which nothing you kept private stays private.
Verses 19–24 · The Book in the Right Hand
As for the one given his record in his right hand, he says: come, read my record.
Ha'umu iqra'u kitabiyah: here, take it, read my record. The first instinct of the man who succeeded is to hand the file to other people. He is not protecting anything, because there is nothing in it to protect.
Inni zanantu anni mulaqin hisabiyah: I was certain I would meet my accounting. Ibn Kathir treats zann here as certainty rather than doubt. The single conviction that produced the file is that the meeting was going to happen.
Fahuwa fi 'ishatin radiyah: in a pleasing life. The reward is named as a life, not as an object.
Kulu washrabu hani'an bima aslaftum fi al-ayyam al-khaliyah: eat and drink in satisfaction for what you sent ahead in the days now gone. Aslaftum is the language of advancing something ahead of yourself. The days are described as gone, and the only part of them that arrived is what was sent forward.
He lived certain of the meeting, so the file was clean, so he hands it to strangers unprompted.
Verses 25–29 · The Book in the Left Hand
As for the one given his record in his left hand, he says: I wish I had not been given my record.
Ya laytani lam uta kitabiyah wa lam adri ma hisabiyah: I wish I had not been given it and had never known my accounting. The first wish is not for a different life. It is for the file not to exist.
Ya laytaha kanat al-qadiyah: I wish it had been the end. He asks for the first death to have been final, which is a wish for annihilation over accounting.
Ma aghna 'anni maliyah: my wealth has not availed me. He names his wealth first, which tells you what he had been relying on.
Halaka 'anni sultaniyah: my authority has left me. Sultan covers power, standing, argument, and leverage. All of it is described as having perished, in the past tense, while he is still standing there.
The wealth did not carry over and the authority did not survive the crossing. He wanted the file deleted, not the life rewritten.
Verses 30–37 · The Two Charges
Seize him and bind him, then drive him into the Blaze, then in a chain of seventy cubits insert him.
The sentence is given before the charges, and then the charges are read out. That order is deliberate.
Innahu kana la yu'minu billahi al-'azim: he did not believe in Allah the Most Great. The first charge is the expected one.
Wa la yahuddu 'ala ta'ami al-miskin: and he did not urge the feeding of the poor. Not that he failed to feed them. That he did not urge it, did not press others toward it, did not use whatever voice he had to move food toward hungry people. The bar is set at influence, not at charity.
Fam la yahuddu 'ala ta'ami al-miskin is the same charge Al-Ma'un files, and the pairing of the two charges here is the surah's argument. Belief that leaves the hungry unmentioned is not the belief being described.
Wa la ta'amun illa min ghislin: no food except from the washing of wounds. The punishment is matched to the crime with precision, and the crime was about food.
Two charges. One about God, one about the poor. They are filed as a single case.
Verses 38–52 · The Oath and the Aorta
I swear by what you see and by what you do not see, it is the word of a noble messenger.
Fala uqsimu bima tubsiruna wa ma la tubsirun: an oath by the visible and the invisible together. Everything is called as a witness, including everything you have no access to.
Wa ma huwa biqawli sha'ir, wa la biqawli kahin: not the word of a poet, not the word of a soothsayer. Both accusations were live in Mecca and both are answered by naming what little of it they actually believe.
Wa law taqawwala 'alayna ba'da al-aqawil, la-akhadhna minhu bil-yamin, thumma laqata'na minhu al-watin: had he invented sayings and attributed them to Us, We would have seized him by the right hand and then severed his aorta. The claim is staked on the life of the man delivering it. No forger writes his own execution clause into the document.
Wa innahu latadhkiratun lil-muttaqin: it is a reminder for the God-conscious. And then, for those who deny, a note that it will be a source of regret, and a closing instruction to glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
He staked his own throat on not having written it. That is the closing argument of the surah.

Why This Surah Is For You
Verse 34 is the verse to sit with. The charge is not that he failed to feed the poor. It is that he did not urge it. A man with a platform is being measured on whether he used his voice to move food toward hungry people, and the verse files that failure next to disbelief in the same sentence.
Verses 28 and 29 are the two assets most men build. Maliyah, my wealth. Sultaniyah, my authority, my standing, my leverage. The surah has him name both, in that order, at the exact moment neither one functions.
Verse 20 says he was certain he would meet his accounting, and Ibn Kathir reads that certainty as the cause of everything in his file. Not fear of failure. Certainty about a meeting. Build the calendar around a meeting that is definitely happening and the file writes itself.
Verse 12 names the requirement as a retaining ear. Hearing a thing is not the transaction. The Quran repeatedly assumes that a man who takes in a great deal and keeps none of it has not participated. Ask what you retained from the last thing that moved you.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Fifty-Two Verses. Write the File Clean.
Read verses 19 to 29 side by side, the two hands in one sitting. The contrast is the design of the passage and it collapses if you read them apart.
Act on verse 34 this week. Not feeding someone, urging it. Use your voice, your platform, or your table to move other people toward feeding a hungry person.
Use verse 18 as the privacy audit. Nothing hidden of you stays hidden. Every account, every message, every room you thought was closed.
Recite verses 25 to 29 in any season where wealth and standing are climbing, and let the man in that verse name them out loud for you first.
One blast, one blow, and one page in one hand. Write the file now, because it is read out loud later.
