The Surah · Al-Hajj
Yaaa ayyuhan naasuttaqu rabbakum; inna zalzalatas saa'ati shai'un 'azim
People, be mindful of your Lord. The earthquake of the Hour is a great thing.
Yawma tarawnahaa tazhalu kullu murdi'atin 'ammaaa arda'at wa tada'u kullu zaati hamlin hamlahaa wa tarannaasa sukaaraa wa maa hum bisukaaraa wa lakinaa 'azaabal laahi shadid
On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will forget what she nursed, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see people as though intoxicated, though they are not intoxicated. But the punishment of Allah is severe.
Wa minan naasi mai yujaadilu fil laahi bighairi 'ilminw wa yattabi'u kullaa shaitaanim marid
Among people is the one who argues about Allah without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.
Kutiba 'alaihi annahu man tawallaahu fa annahu yudil lauhu wa yahdihi ilaa 'azaabis sa'ir
It is decreed for him that whoever takes him as a friend, he will lead him astray and guide him to the punishment of the blaze.
Yaaa ayyuhan naasu in kuntum fi raibim minal ba'si fa innaa khalaqnaakum min turaabin summa min nutfatin summaa min 'alaqatin summa mim mud ghatim mukhal laqatinw wa ghairi mukhalla qatil linubaiyina lakum; wa nuqirru fil arhaami maa nashaaa'u ilaaa ajalim musam man summa nukhrijukum tiflan summa litablughuo ashud dakum wa minkum mai yutawaffa wa minkum mai yuraddu ilaaa arzalil 'umuri likailaa ya'lama mim ba'di 'ilmin shai'aa; wa taral arda haamidatan fa izaaa anzalnaa 'alaihal maaa'ah tazzat wa rabat wa ambatat min kulli zawjim bahij
People, if you are in doubt about the resurrection, We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging form, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, so that We may make it clear to you. And We settle in the wombs what We will for a stated term, then We bring you out as a child, then you reach your full strength. Among you is the one who dies, and among you is the one returned to the most feeble age, so that he knows nothing after having known. And you see the earth lifeless, and when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells and produces every beautiful kind.
Zaalika bi annal laaha huwal haqqu wa annahu yuhyil mawtaa wa annahu 'alaakulli shai'in qadir
That is because Allah is the Truth, and because He gives life to the dead, and because He has power over all things,
Wa annas saa'ata aatiya tul laa raiba fiha wa annal laaha yab'asuman fil qubur
and because the Hour is coming, no doubt about it, and because Allah will raise those in the graves.
Wa minan naasi mai yujaadilu fil laahi bighairi 'ilminw wa laa hudanw wa laa kitaabim munir
Among people is the one who argues about Allah without knowledge, without guidance, and without an enlightening Book,
Saaniya 'itfihi liyudilla 'an sabilil laahi lahu fiddun yaa khizyunw wa nuziquhu yawmal qiyaamati 'azaabal lhariq
turning his side arrogantly to lead others away from the way of Allah. For him is disgrace in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the punishment of the burning.
Zaalika bimaa qaddamat yadaaka wa annal laaha laisa bizallaamil lil'abid
That is for what your hands sent forth, and because Allah is not unjust to His servants.
Wa minan naasi mai ya'budul laaha 'alaa harfin fa in asaabahu khairunit maanna bihi wa in asaabat hu fitnatunin qalaba 'alaa wajhihi khasirad dunyaa wal aakhirah; zaalika huwal khusraanul mubin
Among people is the one who worships Allah on an edge. If good touches him, he is content with it. If a trial touches him, he turns about on his face. He has lost this world and the hereafter. That is the clear loss.
Yad'u min dunil laahi maa laa yadurruhu wa maa laa yanfa'uh' zaalika huwad dalaalul ba'ed
He calls, besides Allah, upon what neither harms him nor benefits him. That is the far error.
Yad'u laman darruhuo aqrabu min naf'ih; labi'salmawlaa wa labi'sal 'ashir
He calls upon one whose harm is nearer than his benefit. What an evil protector, and what an evil companion.
Innal laaha yudkhilul laina aamanu wa 'amilus saalihaati jannaatin tajri min tahtihal anhaar; innal laaha yaf'alu maa yurid
Allah admits those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow. Allah does what He intends.
Man kaana yazunnu allai yansurahul laahu fid dunyaa wal aakhirati fal yamdud bisababin ilas samaaa'i summal yaqta' falyanzur hal yuzhibanna kaiduhu maa yaghiz
Whoever thinks that Allah will not help him in this world and the hereafter, let him stretch a rope to the sky, then cut it off, and see whether his plan removes what enrages him.
Wa kazaalika anzalnaahu aayaatim baiyinaatinw wa annal laaha yahdi mai yurid
In the same way We sent it down as clear verses, and Allah guides whom He intends.
Innal lazina aamanu wallazina haadu was saabi'ina wan nasaaraa wal majusa wallazina ashrakuo innal laaha yafsilu bainahum yawmal qiyaamah; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in shahid
Those who believed, and those who were Jews, and the Sabeans, and the Christians, and the Magians, and those who associated others with Allah, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Allah is Witness over all things.
Alam tara annal laaha yasjudu lahu man fis samaawaati wa man fil ardi wash shamsu walqamaru wan nu jumu wal jibaalu wash shajaru wad dawaaabbu wa kasirum minan naasi wa kasirun haqqa 'alaihil 'azaab; wa mai yuhinil laahu famaa lahu mim mukrim; innallaaha yaf'alu maa yashaaa
Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures, and many among people? And upon many the punishment is justified. Whoever Allah disgraces, there is none to honor him. Allah does what He wills.
✦
A prostration is made here in recitation.﴾
Haazaani khasmaanikh tasamu fi rabbihim fal lazina kafaru qutti'at lahum siyaabum min naar; yusabbu min fawqi ru'usihimul hamim
These are two adversaries who disputed about their Lord. For those who disbelieved, garments of fire will be cut out for them, and scalding water will be poured over their heads,
Yusharu bihi maa fi butunihim waljulud
melting what is in their bellies, and their skins.
Wa lahum maqaami'u min hadid
And for them are hooked rods of iron.
Kullamaa araaduo any yakhruju minhaa min ghammin u'idu fiha wa zuqu 'azaabal hariq
Every time they want to come out of it, out of anguish, they are returned to it. Taste the punishment of the burning.
Innal laaha yudkhilul lazina aamanu wa 'amilus saalihaati jannaatin tajri min tahtihal anhaaru yuhallawna fihaa min asaawira min zahabinw wa lu'lu'aa; wa libaasuhum fihaa harir
Allah admits those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow, adorned there with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their garments there are silk.
Wa huduo ilat taiyibi minal qawli wa huduo ilaaa siraatil hamid
They were guided to good speech, and guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
Innal lazina kafaru wa yasudduna 'an sabilil laahi wal masjidil haraamil lazi ja'alnaahu linnaasi sawaaa'anil 'aakifu fihi walbaad; wa mai yurid fihi bi ilhaadim bizulmin nuziqhu min 'azaabin alim
Those who disbelieve and turn people from the way of Allah and from the Sacred Mosque, which We made for people, equal for the resident and the visitor, and whoever intends deviation in it by wrongdoing, We will make him taste a painful punishment.
Wa iz bawwaanaa li ibraahima makaanal baiti allaa tushrik bi shai'anw wa tahhir baitiya litaaa'ifina walqaaa' imina warrukka 'is sujud
And when We showed Ibrahim the site of the House: do not associate anything with Me, and purify My House for those who circle it, and those who stand and bow and prostrate.
Wa azzin fin naasi bil hajji yaatuka rijaalanw wa 'alaa kulli daamiriny yaatina min kulli fajjin 'amiq
And announce to the people the pilgrimage. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant pass,
Li yashhadu manaafi'a lahum wa yazkurus mal laahi fie ayyaamimma'lumaatin 'alaa maa razaqahum mim bahimatil an'aami fakulu minhaa wa at'imul baaa'isal faqir
so that they may witness benefits for themselves, and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He provided them of grazing livestock. So eat from them and feed the desperate and the poor.
Summal yaqdu tafasahum wal yufu nuzurahum wal yattawwafu bil baitil 'Atiq
Then let them end their untidiness, fulfill their vows, and circle the ancient House.
Zaalika wa mai yu'azzim hurumaatil laahi fahuwa khairul lahu 'inda rabbih; wa uhillat lakumul an'aamu illaa maa yutlaa 'alaikum fajtanibur rijsa minal awsaani wajtanibu qawlaz zur
That is so. Whoever honors the sacred things of Allah, it is better for him with his Lord. Livestock is made lawful for you, except what is recited to you. So avoid the filth of idols, and avoid false speech,
Hunafaaa'a lillaahi ghaira mushrikina bih; wa mai yushrik billaahi faka annamaa kharra minas samaaa'i fatakh tafuhut tairu aw tahwi bihir rihu bi makaanin sahiq
inclining to Allah, not associating anything with Him. Whoever associates with Allah is as though he fell from the sky and the birds snatched him, or the wind threw him to a far place.
Zaalika wa mai yu'azzim sha'aaa'iral laahi fa innahaa min taqwal qulub
That is so. Whoever honors the symbols of Allah, that comes from the mindfulness of the hearts.
Lakum fihaa manaafi'u ilaaa ajalim musamman summa mahilluhaaa ilal baitil 'Atiq
In them are benefits for you for a stated term, then their place of sacrifice is at the ancient House.
Wa likulli ummatin ja'alnaa mansakal liyazkurus mal laahi 'alaa maa razaqahum mim bahimatil an'aam; failaahukum ilaahunw waahidun falahuo aslimu; wa bashshiril mukhbitin
For every nation We appointed a rite, so that they may mention the name of Allah over what He provided them of grazing livestock. Your God is one God, so submit to Him. And give good news to the humble,
Allazina izaa zukiral laahu wajilat qulubuhum wassaabirina 'alaa maaa asaabahum walmuqimis salaati wa mimmaa razaqnaahum yunfiqun
those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned, who are patient over what strikes them, who establish the prayer, and who spend from what We provided them.
Walbudna ja'alnaahaa lakum min sha'aaa'iril laahi lakum fihaa khairun fazkurusmal laahi 'alaihaa sawaaff; fa izaa wajabat junubuhaa fakulu minhaa wa at'imul qaani'a walmu'tarr; kazaalika sakhkharnaahaa lakum la'allakum tashkurun
And the camels for sacrifice, We made them for you among the symbols of Allah. In them is good for you. So mention the name of Allah over them as they stand in line, and when they fall on their sides, eat from them and feed the contented and the beggar. In the same way We made them subject to you, so that you may be grateful.
Lany yanaalal laaha luhu muhaa wa laa dimaaa'uhaa wa laakiny yanaaluhut taqwaa minkum; kazaalika sakhkharhaa lakum litukabbirul laaha 'alaa ma hadaakum; wa bashshirul muhsinin
Their meat will not reach Allah, nor their blood, but the mindfulness from you reaches Him. In the same way He made them subject to you, so that you may magnify Allah for guiding you. And give good news to those who do good.
Innal laaha yudaafi' 'anil lazina aamanu; innal laaha laa yuhibbu kulla khawwaanin kafur
Allah defends those who believe. Allah does not love any treacherous, ungrateful person.

those who were driven from their homes without right, only for saying, "Our Lord is Allah." Were it not that Allah repels some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, in which the name of Allah is much mentioned, would have been demolished. Allah will surely help those who help Him. Allah is Strong, Mighty.

We never sent a messenger or a prophet before you but that, when he recited, Satan cast something into his recitation. Allah abolishes what Satan casts, then Allah establishes His verses. Allah is Knowing, Wise,

Wa liya'lamal lazina utul 'ilma annahul haqqu mir rabbika fa yu'minu bihi fatukhbita ahu qulubuhum; wa innal laaha lahaadil lazina aamanu ilaa siraatim mustaqim
And so that those given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord, and believe in it, and their hearts submit humbly to it. Allah guides those who believe to a straight path.
Wa laa yazaalul lazina kafaru fi miryatim minhu hattaa taatiyahumus saa'atu baghtatan aw yaatiyahum 'azaabu yawmin 'aqim

Almulku yawma'izil lillaahi yahkumu bainahum; fallazina aamanu wa 'amilus saalihaati fi jannaatin na'im
The dominion that Day belongs to Allah. He will judge between them. Those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in gardens of delight.
Wallazina kafaru wa kazzabu bi aayaatinaa fa ulaaa'ika lahum 'azaabum muhin
Those who disbelieved and denied Our verses will have a humiliating punishment.

He will admit them to an entrance they will be pleased with. Allah is Knowing, Forbearing.
That is so. Whoever responds with the like of what he was harmed with, and is then wronged again, Allah will help him. Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.
Zaalika bi annal laaha yulijul laila fin nahaari wa yulijun nahaara fil laili wa annal laaha sami'um basir
That is because Allah merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night, and because Allah is Hearing, Seeing.
Zaalika bi annal laaha huwal haqqu wa anna maa yad'una min dunihi huwal baatilu wa annal laaha huwal 'Aliyyul kabir
That is because Allah is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Great.
Alam tara annal laaha anzala minas samaaa'i maaa'an fatusbihul ardu mukhdarrah; innal laaha latifun khabir
Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the sky, and the earth becomes green? Allah is Subtle, Aware.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Allah is the Rich, the Praiseworthy.

Do you not see that Allah has made subject to you whatever is on the earth, and the ships running through the sea by His command, and He holds the sky from falling on the earth except by His permission? Allah is Kind and Merciful to people.
Wa huwal lazi ahyaakum summa yumitukum summma yuhikum; innal insaana lakafur
He is the One who gave you life, then causes you to die, then gives you life again. The human being is truly ungrateful.
Likulli ummatin ja'alnaa mansakan hum naasikuhu falaa yunaazi 'unnaka fil amr; wad'u ilaa rabbika innaka la 'alaa hudam mustaqim
For every nation We appointed a rite which they perform. So let them not dispute with you over the matter. And call to your Lord. You are upon straight guidance.

If they argue with you, say, "Allah knows best what you are doing.

Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning that in which you used to differ."

Do you not know that Allah knows what is in the heaven and the earth? That is in a record. That is easy for Allah.
They worship besides Allah what He has sent down no authority for, and what they have no knowledge of. The wrongdoers will have no helper.

When Our clear verses are recited to them, you recognize denial in the faces of those who disbelieve. They almost attack those who recite Our verses to them. Say, "Shall I tell you of something worse than that? The Fire. Allah has promised it to those who disbelieve, and it is an evil destination."

People, an example is presented, so listen to it. Those you call upon besides Allah could never create a fly, even if they gathered together for it. And if the fly took something from them, they could not retrieve it from it. Weak is the seeker and the sought.
Maa qadrul laaha haqqa qadrih; innal laaha la qawiyyun 'Aziz
They have not measured Allah with the measure due to Him. Allah is Strong, Mighty.

Allah chooses messengers from the angels and from people. Allah is Hearing, Seeing.
He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and to Allah all matters are returned.
Yaaa ayyuhal lazina aamanur ka'u wasjudu wa'budu rabbakum waf'alul khaira la'allakum tuflihun
You who believe, bow, prostrate, worship your Lord, and do good, so that you may succeed.
✦
A second prostration is made here in the Shafi'i school.﴾٧٨﴿ وَجَٰهِدُوا۟ فِى ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِۦ ۚ هُوَ ٱجْتَبَىٰكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍۢ ۚ مِّلَّةَ أَبِيكُمْ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۚ هُوَ سَمَّىٰكُمُ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ مِن قَبْلُ وَفِى هَٰذَا لِيَكُونَ ٱلرَّسُولُ شَهِيدًا عَلَيْكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا۟ شُهَدَآءَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ ۚ فَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱعْتَصِمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ هُوَ مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۖ فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَوْلَىٰ وَنِعْمَ ٱلنَّصِيرُ
Wa jaahidu fil laahi haqqa jihaadih; huwaj tabaakum wa maa ja'ala 'alaikum fid dini min haraj; millata abikum ibraahim; huwa sammaakumul muslimina min qablu wa fi haaza li yakunar rasulu shahidan 'alaikum wa takunu shuhadaaa'a 'alan naas; fa aqimus salaata wa aatuz zakaata wa'tasimu billaahi huwa mawlaakum fani'mal mawlaa wa ni'man nasir
And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has placed no hardship upon you in the religion, the way of your father Ibrahim. He named you Muslims before, and in this, so that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over people. So establish the prayer, give the zakat, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protector. What an excellent Protector, and what an excellent Helper.
The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
The Man Standing on an Edge
Al-Hajj contains a diagnosis that most men will recognize before they finish reading it. Verse 11. Among people is the one who worships Allah on an edge. If good touches him, he is content with it. If a trial touches him, he turns about on his face. Ala harfin, on a rim, on the outer margin of something rather than inside it. This is not a disbeliever. He worships. The problem is his position, which is such that any pressure tips him out. The rest of the surah is about what puts a man inside instead: a call announced from a hilltop, a pilgrimage that costs him something, a sacrifice whose meat is explicitly said not to reach Allah, and a striving described at the end as being due to Him.
Verses 1 to 24
Worship on an Edge
Verse 2 opens with an image that removes every ordinary priority in one line. Every nursing mother will forget what she nursed. The strongest instinct in the created world, described as forgotten. Verse 5 then answers doubt about resurrection by walking a man through his own biography: dust, a drop, a clinging form, a lump, a child, full strength, and then the clause that should stop him. Among you is the one returned to the most feeble age, so that he knows nothing after having known. A man can lose what he spent a lifetime acquiring while still alive, and the verse puts that in the same list as being made from dust. Verse 11 is the center. He worships Allah on an edge. Good arrives and he is content. Trial arrives and he turns about on his face. The verdict is blunt and covers both directions. He has lost this world and the hereafter. He did not even get the world he was hedging for. Verse 15 then handles the other man, the one who suspects Allah will not help him. Let him stretch a rope to the sky, then cut it off, and see whether his plan removes what enrages him. The image is deliberately absurd because the resentment it describes is absurd. A man furious that help has not come is invited to try engineering an alternative and watch what it accomplishes. Verse 18 lists what already prostrates: the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures, and many among people. Many, not all. Everything in creation is already in the posture except part of one species. Verse 24 closes the section with what the people of the Garden were guided to first. They were guided to good speech. Not to victory or wealth. To what comes out of their mouths.
Verses 25 to 41
What Reaches Him
Verse 27 is the command that built the largest recurring gathering in human history. Announce to the people the pilgrimage. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant pass. One man announcing to an empty valley. Verse 28 names the purpose without spiritualizing it: so that they may witness benefits for themselves, manafi', a plain word that covers trade, meeting, and provision, alongside the remembrance. Verse 32 gives the standard for every rite in the religion. Whoever honors the symbols of Allah, that comes from the mindfulness of the hearts. The outward act is described as evidence of an inward condition rather than a substitute for it. Verse 37 is the verse that governs every act of worship a man will ever perform. Their meat will not reach Allah, nor their blood, but the mindfulness from you reaches Him. The animal is slaughtered, the meat is distributed, the poor are fed, and none of that is what ascends. What ascends is taqwa. Read that against any act a man performs where the visible output is the point. Verse 35 names the people this reaches, and the list is compact: hearts that tremble when Allah is mentioned, patience over what strikes them, the prayer established, and spending from what they were given. Verse 39 and verse 40 then record the first permission to fight, given to people who had been driven from their homes for one sentence: our Lord is Allah. And verse 40 states the reason the permission exists, which is not conquest. Were it not that Allah repels some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques would have been demolished. The protection named includes houses of worship that are not Muslim. Verse 41 then sets the test for anyone who is given power. If We establish them in the land, they establish the prayer, give the zakat, command what is right, and forbid what is wrong. That is the job description attached to the position, and it is stated before the position is granted.
Verses 42 to 66
It Is Not the Eyes That Go Blind
Verse 46 is the sentence to keep from this section. Have they not traveled the earth, so that they may have hearts to reason with, or ears to hear with? It is not the eyes that go blind, but the hearts in the chests that go blind. The verse locates blindness precisely and does not use the word as a loose metaphor. It names the organ. A man with working eyes standing in front of the evidence is described as blind in a specific place. Verse 45 gives what he is standing in front of: towns fallen in on their roofs, abandoned wells, and lofty palaces, in that order, the wells and the palaces sitting side by side because both are empty. Verse 47 answers the men demanding the punishment now with a correction of scale. A day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count. Verses 52 through 54 address something men have always tried against revelation. An attempt is made to cast something into what a prophet delivers, Allah abolishes what is cast, and then establishes His verses. Verse 53 and verse 54 give the function of the whole episode: it separates those with sickness and hardness in their hearts from those given knowledge, whose hearts submit humbly to it. The attempt to corrupt the message becomes the instrument that sorts the audience. Verse 60 gives a rule of proportion that is easy to miss. Whoever responds with the like of what he was harmed with, and is then wronged again, Allah will help him. The response is capped at the like of the injury, and the help is promised to the man who kept to that cap and was struck anyway. Verse 65 then names something no one notices. He holds the sky from falling on the earth. The ordinary state of things is described as an act being performed continuously.
Verses 67 to 78
The Fly, and the Striving Due to Him
Verse 73 gives the most deflating example in the Quran, and it opens by asking for attention. People, an example is presented, so listen to it. Those you call upon besides Allah could never create a fly, even if they gathered together for it. And then the second half, which is worse than the first. If the fly took something from them, they could not retrieve it from it. Not only can the assembled powers not produce the smallest creature, they cannot recover what that creature takes off them. Then the verdict on both parties. Weak is the seeker and the sought. Verse 74 states the underlying failure in one line. They have not measured Allah with the measure due to Him. Every idolatry, ancient or modern, is described as an error of measurement. Verse 77 gives four commands in sequence: bow, prostrate, worship your Lord, and do good. Three acts inside the prayer and one outside it, joined without a seam. Note that this surah carries a prostration in recitation at verse 18, and in the Shafi'i school a second one at verse 77, which is why Al-Hajj is described as the surah with two prostrations. Verse 78 closes with the largest instruction in the surah and immediately removes the fear that comes with it. Strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. Then, in the same verse: He has chosen you and has placed no hardship upon you in the religion. Haraj, constriction, being boxed in. The demand is total and the design is not oppressive, and both statements are made in one breath. Then the identity: the way of your father Ibrahim, He named you Muslims before. And then the closing four: establish the prayer, give the zakat, hold fast to Allah, and know who is holding the other end.
The Structure · At A Glance
Seventy-Eight Verses. Their Meat Will Not Reach Allah.
The surah diagnoses the man who worships from the rim, content when things go well and turned around the moment pressure arrives, and says he lost both worlds. It answers doubt about resurrection with a man's own biography, including the age at which he loses what he spent a life learning. It records the call to the pilgrimage announced to an empty valley, names honoring the symbols as evidence of the heart rather than a substitute for it, and states plainly that no meat and no blood ascends, only the mindfulness behind it. It gives the first permission to fight to people expelled for one sentence, attaches a job description to any power granted, locates blindness in the chest rather than the eyes, and closes on a striving that is owed and a religion built without constriction.
