The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Al-Ghashiyah is twenty-six verses, chapter 88 — a Meccan surah and one of the most beloved in the Prophet's regular practice. He recited it in the Friday prayer and in the Eid prayers, frequently pairing it with Al-A'la (chapter 87). The two surahs together formed one of the standard recitations of the early Muslim community.
The surah is named for its opening verse: hal ataka hadithu al-ghashiyah. Has there come to you the report of the Overwhelming? Al-ghashiyah comes from the root gh-sh-y, meaning to cover, to envelop, to overwhelm completely. Al-ghashiyah is the Overwhelming Event — the Day of Judgment named by its character of covering everything in its scope. Nothing escapes it.
The structural design is exquisite. The surah opens with a rhetorical question, moves into the two destinations (humbled faces, pleased faces), turns to the natural world as evidence (the camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth), and closes with the Prophet's role and the affirmation that the return and the accounting belong to Allah. All of reality — past, future, and present — points to the same truth.
Has the Overwhelming reached you? Two faces, two destinations. The camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth — all signs. You are only a reminder. The return is to Us. The accounting is upon Us.
Verses 1–7 · The Faces of the Humbled
Faces humbled, working and exhausted, in a blazing fire, drinking from a boiling spring, eating from a thorn that does not nourish.
Hal ataka hadithu al-ghashiyah: the rhetorical opening. Not asking for information — alerting the listener. Sit up. Pay attention. The report is coming.
Wujuhun yawma-idhin khashi'ah · 'amilatun nasibah: faces humbled, working and exhausted. The labor is futile. They worked hard in the dunya for the wrong destination, and the labor continues in the akhirah without yield.
Tasla naran hamiyah · tusqa min 'aynin aniyah: burning in an intensely hot fire, drinking from a boiling spring. Heat from outside, heat from inside. The relief itself becomes part of the suffering.
Laysa lahum ta'amun illa min dari' · la yusminu wa la yughni min ju': no food except a bitter thorn that neither nourishes nor satisfies. The food causes the suffering of eating without the benefit of eating. Perpetual hunger satisfied with what does not satisfy.
Humbled faces. Working and exhausted. Burning fire. Boiling drink. Food that does not nourish. The first destination compressed into seven verses.
Verses 8–16 · The Faces of the Pleased
Faces at ease, satisfied with their striving, in the elevated garden, hearing no idle speech, with flowing spring, raised couches, cups ready, cushions in rows, carpets spread.
Wujuhun yawma-idhin na'imah · li-sa'yiha radiyah: faces at ease, pleased with their effort. The mirror of the previous passage. The same word for labor (sa'y), but here it landed. The effort was honored.
Fi jannatin 'aliyah · la tasma'u fiha laghiyah: in an elevated garden, hearing no idle speech. No laghw — no gossip, no slander, no pointless talk. The interior environment is as elevated as the exterior.
Fiha 'aynun jariyah: within it is a flowing spring. The mirror of verse 5: there the spring was boiling; here it flows freely. The same image, opposite condition.
Sururun marfu'ah · akwabun mawdu'ah · namariqu masfufah · zarabiyyu mabthuthah: raised couches, cups already set, cushions in rows, carpets spread. The hosting is anticipatory. Nothing is requested. Everything is already prepared. The dignity of arrival.
Faces at ease. Effort honored. Elevated garden. No idle speech. Flowing spring. Raised couches. Cups already set. Cushions in rows. Carpets spread. The second destination compressed into nine verses.
Verses 17–20 · The Four Signs
Look at the camel, how it is created. The sky, how it is raised. The mountains, how they are set up. The earth, how it is spread out.
Afala yanzuruna ila al-ibili kayfa khuliqat: do they not look at the camel, how it is created? The camel — a marvel of engineering. Survives without water for over a week. Stores water and energy in its hump. Feet adapted to shifting sand. Eyelashes protect from blowing sand. Eats thorns no other animal can digest. An animal designed precisely for the Arab environment. The Quran asks: did you ever consider how it came to be so perfectly suited to your environment?
Wa ila as-sama-i kayfa rufi'at: and at the sky, how it is raised? The sky positioned high above. By what mechanism? By whose hand?
Wa ila al-jibali kayfa nusibat: and at the mountains, how they are set up. Nusibat — fixed, planted, set firmly. The mountains as pegs that stabilize the earth.
Wa ila al-ardi kayfa sutihat: and at the earth, how it is spread out. The earth made livable, walkable, spread for human habitation.
Look at the camel. Look at the sky. Look at the mountains. Look at the earth. Every direction is a sign. The Creator of these is the Arranger of the Overwhelming. The two are not separate matters.
Verses 21–26 · The Prophet's Role and the Closing
So remind, you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller. Except for one who turns away and disbelieves — then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment. Indeed, to Us is their return. Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
Fadhakkir innama anta mudhakkir: so remind — you are only a reminder. The Prophet's role is delivery, not coercion. He is the mudhakkir, the one who reminds.
Lasta 'alayhim bi-musaytir: you are not over them a controller. Musaytir — one with authority to compel. The Prophet ﷺ is not given the power of compulsion. The verse releases him from the burden of forcing belief.
Illa man tawalla wa kafar: except for the one who turns away and disbelieves. The same two acts named in Al-Layl verse 16 — tawalla wa kafar. The full pattern of conscious rejection.
Fa-yu'adhdhibuhu Allahu al-'adhaba al-akbar: then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment. Al-'adhab al-akbar — distinguished from the lesser punishment of the dunya. Reserved for the one who turned away with full awareness.
Inna ilayna iyabahum · thumma inna 'alayna hisabahum: to Us is their return — upon Us is their account. The case is held in a divine court. The Prophet ﷺ does not need to chase, does not need to relitigate. The filing has been made. Trust the jurisdiction.
You are only a reminder. You are not the controller. The return is to Us. The accounting is upon Us. Deliver. Trust. The jurisdiction is clear.

Why This Surah Is For You
Al-Ghashiyah is the surah of two destinations clarified — and of the teacher released from the burden of forcing belief. The Prophet ﷺ recited it in Friday and Eid prayers because the community needed the reminder weekly: the Overwhelming is coming, the signs are around you, your role is to deliver.
Carry verses 2–7 as the warning. The labor that misfires lands in the same labor without yield. Make sure your effort is aimed at the right destination.
Carry verses 8–16 as the offer. The garden is elevated, hosted, anticipatory — every dignity already prepared for the one whose effort landed.
Use verses 17–20 as a regular discipline of attention. Look at the camel. Look at the sky. Look at the mountains. Look at the earth. The signs are around you. Train the eye to see them.
Carry verses 21–26 as the release. You are not the controller. Deliver and trust. The return is to Allah. The accounting is upon Allah. The case belongs to a higher court.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Twenty-Six Verses. Deliver and Trust.
Four verses per day spoken aloud — installed by week's end. Pair Al-Ghashiyah with Al-A'la (87), as the Prophet ﷺ did in his weekly recitations.
Carry verse 9 — li-sa'yiha radiyah — as the aim of effort. The goal is not just to strive, but to strive at what will please you on the Day. Audit the effort.
Use verses 17–20 as a walk-and-look practice. Each line is a direction to turn the eye. The signs are around you. Train the attention.
Carry verse 21 — innama anta mudhakkir — as the antidote to the burden of forcing belief. You are only a reminder. Deliver. Release.
Carry verses 25–26 as the closing line of every interaction. To Us is their return. Upon Us is their account. The jurisdiction is not yours.
The Overwhelming is coming. Two faces, two destinations. The signs are around you. You are the reminder, not the controller. The return is to Him. The accounting is upon Him.
