The Surah · Al-Fath

Inna fatahna laka fathan mubina

We have given you a clear victory,

so that Allah may forgive you what preceded of your fault and what followed, and complete His favor upon you, and guide you on a straight path,

Wa yansuraka Allahu nasran 'aziza

and that Allah may support you with a mighty support.

Huwa alladhi anzala as-sakinata fi qulubi al-mu'minina liyazdadu imanan ma'a imanihim, wa lillahi junudu as-samawati wal-ard, wa kana Allahu 'aliman hakima

He is the One who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers so that they would increase in faith along with their faith. To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.

Liyudkhila al-mu'minina wal-mu'minati jannatin tajri min tahtiha al-anharu khalidina fiha wa yukaffira 'anhum sayyi'atihim, wa kana dhalika 'inda Allahi fawzan 'azima

So that He may admit the believing men and the believing women into gardens with rivers running beneath them, where they will remain, and remove their bad deeds from them. That, with Allah, is a great triumph.

Wa yu'adhdhiba al-munafiqina wal-munafiqati wal-mushrikina wal-mushrikati az-zannina billahi zanna as-saw', 'alayhim da'iratu as-saw', wa ghadiba Allahu 'alayhim wa la'anahum wa a'adda lahum jahannam, wa sa'at masira

And so that He may punish the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women, and the polytheist men and the polytheist women, who assume the worst about Allah. Upon them is the turn of evil. Allah is angry with them, and has cursed them, and prepared Hell for them. It is a wretched destination.

Wa lillahi junudu as-samawati wal-ard, wa kana Allahu 'azizan hakima

To Allah belong the forces of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Inna arsalnaka shahidan wa mubashshiran wa nadhira

We sent you as a witness, and a bearer of good news, and a warner,

Litu'minu billahi wa rasulihi wa tu'azziruhu wa tuwaqqiruhu wa tusabbihuhu bukratan wa asila

so that you may believe in Allah and His Messenger, and support him, and honor him, and glorify Him morning and evening.

Inna alladhina yubayi'unaka innama yubayi'una Allah, yadu Allahi fawqa aydihim, faman nakatha fa-innama yankuthu 'ala nafsih, wa man awfa bima 'ahada 'alayhu Allaha fasayu'tihi ajran 'azima

Those who pledge allegiance to you only pledge allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. Whoever breaks his pledge breaks it against himself, and whoever fulfills what he has covenanted with Allah, He will give him a great reward.

Sayaqulu laka al-mukhallafuna mina al-a'rabi shaghalatna amwaluna wa ahluna fastaghfir lana, yaquluna bi-alsinatihim ma laysa fi qulubihim, qul faman yamliku lakum mina Allahi shay'an in arada bikum darran aw arada bikum naf'a, bal kana Allahu bima ta'maluna khabira

Those bedouins who lagged behind will say to you: our properties and our families kept us busy, so ask forgiveness for us. They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say: who then controls anything for you against Allah, if He intends harm for you or intends benefit for you. Allah is aware of what you do.

Bal zanantum an lan yanqaliba ar-rasulu wal-mu'minuna ila ahlihim abadan wa zuyyina dhalika fi qulubikum wa zanantum zanna as-saw'i wa kuntum qawman bura

Rather, you assumed the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, and that was made pleasing in your hearts, and you assumed the worst, and you were a ruined people.

Wa man lam yu'min billahi wa rasulihi fa-inna a'tadna lil-kafirina sa'ira

Whoever does not believe in Allah and His Messenger, We have prepared a blaze for the deniers.

Wa lillahi mulku as-samawati wal-ard, yaghfiru liman yasha'u wa yu'adhdhibu man yasha', wa kana Allahu ghafuran rahima

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Sayaqulu al-mukhallafuna idha intalaqtum ila magha'nima lita'khudhuha dharuna nattabi'kum, yuriduna an yubaddilu kalama Allah, qul lan tattabi'una kadhalikum qala Allahu min qabl, fasayaquluna bal tahsudunana, bal kanu la yafqahuna illa qalila

When you set out toward spoils to take them, those who lagged behind will say: let us follow you. They want to change the words of Allah. Say: you will not follow us. That is what Allah said before. Then they will say: rather, you envy us. Rather, they understand little.

Qul lil-mukhallafina mina al-a'rabi satud'awna ila qawmin uli ba'sin shadidin tuqatilunahum aw yuslimun, fa in tuti'u yu'tikumu Allahu ajran hasana, wa in tatawallaw kama tawallaytum min qablu yu'adhdhibkum 'adhaban alima

Say to the bedouins who lagged behind: you will be called against a people of great might. You will fight them, or they will submit. If you obey, Allah will give you a good reward. If you turn away as you turned away before, He will punish you with a painful punishment.

Laysa 'ala al-a'ma harajun wa la 'ala al-a'raji harajun wa la 'ala al-maridi haraj, wa man yuti'i Allaha wa rasulahu yudkhilhu jannatin tajri min tahtiha al-anhar, wa man yatawalla yu'adhdhibhu 'adhaban alima

There is no blame on the blind, nor on the lame, nor on the ill. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him into gardens with rivers running beneath them. Whoever turns away, He will punish him with a painful punishment.

Laqad radiya Allahu 'ani al-mu'minina idh yubayi'unaka tahta ash-shajarati fa'alima ma fi qulubihim fa anzala as-sakinata 'alayhim wa athabahum fathan qariba

Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with a near victory,

and much spoil that they will take. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Wa'adakumu Allahu magha'nima kathiratan ta'khudhunaha fa'ajjala lakum hadhihi wa kaffa aydiya an-nasi 'ankum wa litakuna ayatan lil-mu'minina wa yahdiyakum siratan mustaqima

Allah has promised you much spoil that you will take, and He hastened this for you, and restrained the hands of people from you, so that it may be a sign for the believers, and so that He may guide you on a straight path.

Wa ukhra lam taqdiru 'alayha qad ahata Allahu biha, wa kana Allahu 'ala kulli shay'in qadira

And another that you were not able to take, Allah has encompassed it. And Allah is Capable of all things.

Had those who disbelieved fought you, they would have turned their backs, then found no protector and no helper.

Sunnata Allahi allati qad khalat min qabl, wa lan tajida lisunnati Allahi tabdila

That is the way of Allah which has passed before, and you will find no change in the way of Allah.

Wa huwa alladhi kaffa aydiyahum 'ankum wa aydiyakum 'anhum bibatni Makkata min ba'di an azfarakum 'alayhim, wa kana Allahu bima ta'maluna basira

He is the One who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Mecca, after He had given you victory over them. And Allah sees what you do.

Humu alladhina kafaru wa saddukum 'ani al-masjidi al-harami wal-hadya ma'kufan an yablugha mahillah, wa lawla rijalun mu'minuna wa nisa'un mu'minatun lam ta'lamuhum an tata'uhum fatusibakum minhum ma'arratun bighayri 'ilm, liyudkhila Allahu fi rahmatihi man yasha', law tazayyalu la'adhdhabna alladhina kafaru minhum 'adhaban alima

They are the ones who disbelieved and barred you from the Sacred Mosque, and kept the offering from reaching its place. Were it not for believing men and believing women you did not know, whom you might have trampled and so incurred guilt through them without knowledge, He would have permitted the fighting. That was so Allah may admit into His mercy whom He wills. Had they been separated, We would have punished those of them who disbelieved with a painful punishment.

Idh ja'ala alladhina kafaru fi qulubihimu al-hamiyyata hamiyyata al-jahiliyyati fa anzala Allahu sakinatahu 'ala rasulihi wa 'ala al-mu'minina wa alzamahum kalimata at-taqwa wa kanu ahaqqa biha wa ahlaha, wa kana Allahu bikulli shay'in 'alima

When those who disbelieved had put in their hearts the fervor, the fervor of ignorance, Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and bound them to the word of God-consciousness, and they were more deserving of it and worthy of it. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

Laqad sadaqa Allahu rasulahu ar-ru'ya bil-haqq, latadkhulunna al-masjida al-harama in sha'a Allahu aminina muhalliqina ru'usakum wa muqassirina la takhafun, fa'alima ma lam ta'lamu faja'ala min duni dhalika fathan qariba

Allah has fulfilled the vision of His Messenger in truth. You will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved or shortened, not fearing. He knew what you did not know, and made besides that a near victory.

Huwa alladhi arsala rasulahu bil-huda wa dini al-haqqi liyuzhirahu 'ala ad-dini kullih, wa kafa billahi shahida

He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religion. And Allah is sufficient as a witness.

Muhammadun rasulu Allah, walladhina ma'ahu ashidda'u 'ala al-kuffari ruhama'u baynahum, tarahum rukka'an sujjadan yabtaghuna fadlan mina Allahi wa ridwana, simahum fi wujuhihim min athari as-sujud, dhalika mathaluhum fi at-Tawrah, wa mathaluhum fi al-Injili kazar'in akhraja shat'ahu fa-azarahu fastaghlaza fastawa 'ala suqihi yu'jibu az-zurra'a liyaghiza bihimu al-kuffar, wa'ada Allahu alladhina amanu wa 'amilu as-salihati minhum maghfiratan wa ajran 'azima

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Those with him are firm against the deniers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and His approval. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is like a seed that sends out its shoot, then strengthens it, so it thickens and stands firm on its stalk, delighting the sowers, so that He may enrage the deniers through them. Allah has promised those of them who believed and did righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

Surah Al-Fath is twenty-nine verses, chapter 48, Madani. It was revealed on the return from Hudaybiyyah, where the Muslims had set out for pilgrimage, were turned back at the edge of Mecca, and signed a treaty whose terms read as concessions. Al-Bukhari records Umar's questions to the Prophet ﷺ on that day and his later statement about how much he gave in charity to make up for the way he had spoken.

The surah opens by calling that treaty a clear victory. Not the conquest that came later. The document signed at the moment the men around him believed they had lost. That is the whole argument of the chapter.

They came back without the pilgrimage and with terms that looked like defeat. The first verse calls it a clear victory.

Verses 1–7 · The Naming, and the Tranquility

We have given you a clear victory.

Inna fatahna laka fathan mubina: We have granted you a clear victory. The verb is completed. The naming arrives before any of the results that would later justify it, which is what makes the verse difficult and what makes it useful.

Liyaghfira laka Allahu ma taqaddama min dhanbika wa ma ta'akhkhar wa yutimma ni'matahu 'alayka wa yahdiyaka siratan mustaqima: the stated purposes are forgiveness, the completion of favor, guidance, and support. The victory is defined by what it produces in a man rather than by territory.

Huwa alladhi anzala as-sakinata fi qulubi al-mu'minina liyazdadu imanan ma'a imanihim: He sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers so that they would increase in faith along with their faith. Sakinah is a settling, a stillness that arrives from outside. It is described as the mechanism by which faith increased on the day everything looked wrong.

The passage separates the believers from the hypocrites and the polytheists by what happened inside them at the same event. Same treaty, same road home, different interiors.

The stillness was sent down, and faith increased. On the day it looked like a loss.

Verses 10 and 18 · The Pledge

Those who pledge allegiance to you only pledge allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands.

Inna alladhina yubayi'unaka innama yubayi'una Allah, yadu Allahi fawqa aydihim: the pledge given to the man is described as given to Allah, with His hand above theirs. The commitment is routed past the person receiving it.

Faman nakatha fa-innama yankuthu 'ala nafsih: whoever breaks it breaks it against himself. The consequence of breaking a pledge is described as self-directed.

Laqad radiya Allahu 'ani al-mu'minina idh yubayi'unaka tahta ash-shajarah: Allah was pleased with the believers when they pledged to you under the tree. This is the pledge Muslim records as bay'at ar-ridwan, given when a rumor arrived that Uthman had been killed, at the moment the negotiation looked like it had collapsed.

Fa'alima ma fi qulubihim fa anzala as-sakinata 'alayhim wa athabahum fathan qariba: He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with a near victory. The knowing comes first, then the stillness, then the reward.

They gave their hands to a man and the pledge went past him. He was pleased with them at the worst moment of the trip.

Verses 11–17 · The Ones Who Stayed Behind

Those who lagged behind will say: our properties and our families kept us busy.

Sayaqulu laka al-mukhallafuna mina al-a'rabi shaghalatna amwaluna wa ahluna: our wealth and our families occupied us. The excuse is quoted in advance, before they offer it, which is the sharpest possible way to answer it.

Yaquluna bi-alsinatihim ma laysa fi qulubihim: they say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Then the diagnosis. Bal zanantum an lan yanqaliba ar-rasulu wal-mu'minuna ila ahlihim abada. Rather, you assumed the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families.

They did not stay behind out of obligation. They stayed behind because they had run the odds and concluded the trip was fatal. The Quran names the calculation.

Sayaqulu al-mukhallafuna idha intalaqtum ila magha'nima lita'khudhuha dharuna nattabi'kum: when you set out toward spoils to take, those who stayed behind will say, let us follow you. The same men, once the risk is gone and the return is visible.

The passage then exempts the blind, the lame, and the ill by name, which is the Quran distinguishing between incapacity and calculation.

They stayed home when the odds looked bad and asked to come along once there was something to collect.

Verses 26–29 · Fervor Answered With Stillness

When those who disbelieved had put in their hearts the fervor of ignorance, Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers.

Idh ja'ala alladhina kafaru fi qulubihimu al-hamiyyata hamiyyata al-jahiliyyah: hamiyyah is heat, the flush of pride that makes a man refuse a reasonable term because of who is offering it. It is named as the disease of the other side at Hudaybiyyah, where they refused to let the words Messenger of Allah be written in the document.

Fa anzala Allahu sakinatahu 'ala rasulihi wa 'ala al-mu'minina wa alzamahum kalimata at-taqwa: He sent down His tranquility and bound them to the word of God-consciousness. Heat on one side, stillness on the other, at the same table.

Laqad sadaqa Allahu rasulahu ar-ru'ya bil-haqq, latadkhulunna al-masjida al-haram: Allah has fulfilled the vision in truth, you will surely enter the Sacred Mosque. The vision was true and the timing was not what anyone assumed. Fa'alima ma lam ta'lamu faja'ala min duni dhalika fathan qariba. He knew what you did not know, and made besides that a near victory.

Muhammadun rasulu Allah, walladhina ma'ahu ashidda'u 'ala al-kuffari ruhama'u baynahum: those with him are firm against the deniers, merciful among themselves. Two postures in one line, aimed in two directions, and the order matters.

Simahum fi wujuhihim min athari as-sujud: their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. The surah then gives the parable of a seed that sends out its shoot, strengthens, thickens, and stands on its stalk, delighting the sowers, to enrage the deniers through them.

Their heat, and His stillness, at the same table. And a seed that thickens until it stands on its own stalk.

Why This Surah Is For You

The first verse names a treaty a clear victory while the men who signed it were still upset about it. That is the discipline this surah teaches. The naming of an outcome does not wait for the results that would vindicate it, and the men who were sure they had lost were wrong about a thing they had witnessed personally.

Verse 26 puts hamiyyah, the heat of pride, on one side of a negotiating table and sakinah, tranquility sent down, on the other. Read it before any negotiation where a term offends you because of who is offering it. The refusal that feels like dignity is named in this verse as ignorance.

Verse 11 quotes an excuse before it was made. Our properties and our families kept us busy. It is the most respectable excuse available in any era, and the Quran answers it by naming what was actually underneath, which was a calculation about the odds.

Verse 29 gives the shape of a group that works. Firm outward, merciful inward, marked by what they do when nobody needs anything from them. Then the seed that thickens until it stands on its own stalk. That is a description of growth that becomes self supporting, and it is the closing image of the surah.

The Practice · Daily Integration

Twenty-Nine Verses. Sign the Treaty.

When an outcome looks like a loss, delay the verdict. Verse 1 named the result before the results arrived, and everyone present who judged early was wrong.

Check for hamiyyah before you refuse a term. Verse 26 names the heat that makes a man reject a reasonable clause because of who wrote it.

Watch which men appear when the risk has passed. Verse 15 describes them precisely and it is not a moral failing you need to argue about.

Read verse 29 as the standard for your own circle. Firm outward, merciful inward, and marked by the private practice rather than the public one.

They came home believing they had lost. The first verse of the surah called it a clear victory.
