The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Al-Buruj is twenty-two verses, chapter 85 — a Meccan surah and one of the most morally weighty in Juz Amma. Named for the buruj, the constellations sworn by in the opening verse.
Its central narrative is the story of the People of the Trench — Ashab al-Ukhdud — a tyrannical regime that dug trenches, kindled them with fire, and burned alive the believers who refused to renounce their faith. The surah uses that history to deliver a permanent message about persecution, faith under fire, and the divine assurance that the believers who suffer for their faith have the highest reward.
The historical context is the early Meccan period — Bilal on the burning sand, Sumayyah and Yasir tortured, the early community needing both warning and consolation. Al-Buruj delivers both. It warns the persecutors of the burning fire that awaits them, and consoles the persecuted with the great triumph that awaits them.
The surah closes with one of the most important verses in the Quran about the preservation of the revelation: bal huwa Qur-anun Majid, fi Lawhin Mahfuz. But it is a glorious Quran, in a Preserved Tablet.
The constellations sworn by. The Day promised. The witness and the witnessed. The trench dug, the fire kindled, the believers thrown in. The story is told as warning and consolation. The Quran closes with its own status: glorious, in a Preserved Tablet.
Verses 1–3 · The Three Oaths
By the sky containing the constellations. And by the promised Day. And by the witness and the witnessed.
Was-sama-i dhati al-buruj: the buruj are the great constellations or stations of the heavens — fortified positions in the sky. The oath is by the visible order of cosmic structure itself.
Wal-yawmi al-maw'ud: by the Day that has been promised. The promise is not contingent. The Day is fixed.
Wa shahidin wa mashhud: by the witness and the witnessed. Classical readings: Friday and the Day of Arafah; every prophet and his community; every believer and his deeds. The dual structure — witnessing and being witnessed — frames the entire surah.
Verses 4–9 · The People of the Trench
Cursed were the companions of the trench. The fire with its fuel. When they sat over it. And what they did against the believers, they witnessed. They resented them only because they believed in Allah, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy.
Qutila ashabu al-ukhdud: qutila is an idiomatic curse — may they be destroyed. Ukhdud is a long trench dug into the earth. The historical referent most often cited is the persecution of the Christians of Najran by Dhu Nuwas.
An-nari dhati al-waqud · idh hum 'alayha qu'ud: the fire with its fuel — they sat over it. They did not commit the act and flee. They sat. They watched. They organized the spectacle.
Wa hum 'ala ma yaf'aluna bil-mu-minina shuhud: and they witnessed what they were doing to the believers. The conscious witnessing by the persecutor of his own crime is part of what makes the crime monstrous. The same conscious witnessing will reappear in the accounting on the Day.
Wa ma naqamu minhum illa an yu-minu billahi al-'Azizi al-Hamid: they resented them only because they believed in Allah. The verse strips away every false justification. The crime had no cause other than the faith of the believers.
They sat over the fire. They watched themselves do it. They had no grievance against the believers except their belief in Allah, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy. The persecution had no other reason.
Verses 10–11 · The Reversal of Verdict
Those who persecuted the believing men and women and did not repent will have the punishment of Hell and the burning fire. Those who believed and did righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great triumph.
Fatanu al-mu-minina wal-mu-minat: fatanu is from a root meaning to put through trial by fire — and metaphorically, to persecute, to put under severe pressure to abandon faith. The verse names both the believing men and the believing women — moral concern extends fully to both.
Thumma lam yatubu: and they did not repent. The door of tawbah was open. They did not enter it. The verdict falls on the unrepentance.
Dhalika al-fawzu al-kabir: that is the great triumph. The reframe of victory and defeat is total. The world saw the persecuted as defeated. Allah names them as the triumphant.
The persecutors who did not repent: Hell and the burning fire. The believers who held their faith: the gardens and the great triumph. The world's accounting is overturned.
Verses 12–16 · The Divine Attributes
Indeed, the grip of your Lord is severe. Indeed, He originates and brings back. And He is the Forgiving, the Affectionate. Owner of the Throne, the Glorious. Effecter of what He intends.
Inna batsha Rabbika la-shadid: batsh is the seizing grip — the grasp of overwhelming force. The verse is the warning to the persecutors. The grip will come, and it will be severe.
Innahu huwa yubdi-u wa yu'id: He originates and brings back. The originating power is also the resurrecting power. The One who began this can begin it again.
Wa huwa al-Ghafuru al-Wadud: the Forgiving, the Affectionate. Al-Wadud is not generic love — it is active, expressed, demonstrated affection. The verse pairs severity with affection without contradiction.
Dhu al-'Arshi al-Majid · Fa''alun lima yurid: Owner of the Glorious Throne. Effecter of what He intends. There is no gap between His intention and the realization of that intention. No power can prevent Him from doing what He intends.
Verses 17–20 · The Historical Examples
Has the story of the armies reached you? Of Pharaoh and Thamud? But those who disbelieve are in denial. And Allah encompasses them from behind.
Hal ataka hadithu al-junud · Fir'awna wa Thamud: Pharaoh — the paradigm of imperial denial. Thamud — the paradigm of communal denial. Both armies, both defeated, both delivered as warning.
Bal alladhina kafaru fi takdhib: the deniers persist in denial — even with the historical record in plain sight. The verse exposes the irrational continuity of disbelief.
Wallahu min wara-ihim Muhit: Allah encompasses them from behind. They cannot see what is closing on them. The encompassment is already in place.
Pharaoh and Thamud were warned. They denied. They were destroyed. The same arc is in motion for every persecutor of every era. They cannot see what is closing on them from behind.
Verses 21–22 · The Preserved Tablet
But it is a glorious Quran. In a Preserved Tablet.
Bal huwa Qur-anun Majid: the Quran delivered through the Prophet is not a human invention. It is majid — glorious, noble, of high station.
Fi Lawhin Mahfuz: in a Preserved Tablet — the divine archive where Allah's decreed knowledge is kept. The closing verse establishes the metaphysical status of the very surah being read.
The persecutors of every era should hear in this closing verse that the message they are trying to suppress is in a vault they cannot break into. The believers of every era should hear that the message they are willing to suffer for is rooted in something more permanent than any earthly persecution.
It is a glorious Quran, in a Preserved Tablet. The message you suffer for is not local. It is not recent. It is not human. It is the disclosed portion of what is eternally preserved.

Why This Surah Is For You
Al-Buruj is the surah of faith under fire. It says directly: persecution like this has happened before, the believers held the line, the persecutors faced the divine response, and the believers are named as the triumphant. Hold the line.
Use verse 8 — wa ma naqamu minhum illa an yu-minu billahi al-'Azizi al-Hamid — when the cost of belief comes due. The persecutors then and now have no real grievance other than the faith itself. Name the actual reason. Do not internalize false grievances.
Use verse 11 — dhalika al-fawzu al-kabir — as the reframe of cost. The world's accounting and the divine accounting are different. The cost in one is the gain in the other. Hold this as the true accounting.
Carry verses 21–22 as the answer to every era's attempt to suppress the message. It is preserved beyond every reach. The vault is sealed.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Twenty-Two Verses. Hold The Line.
Four verses per day spoken aloud — installed by day six. Pair Al-Buruj with At-Tariq (86) and Ash-Shams (91) — surahs of cosmic oath and moral resolve.
Carry verse 8 as the antidote to flinching. When the cost arrives, return to the verse. The real grievance is the faith itself. Name it.
Carry verse 11 as the true accounting. The world calls the persecuted defeated. Allah names them the triumphant. Adopt the divine assessment over the world's assessment.
Carry verses 21–22 as the answer to every attempt to suppress the message. It is in the Preserved Tablet. The persecutors fight against a vault they cannot break.
The trench was dug. The fire was kindled. The believers held the line. The Tablet is preserved. Hold the line.
